Tyronn Lue Great Defense on Allen Iverson - 2001 Finals Game 1

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 19 сер 2024
  • One of the most overlooked defensive performances in Finals history. Iverson killed the Lakers through 3 quarters, then Lue comes in and holds Iverson to 3 points in the 4th quarter. In the end, Iverson comes through in the clutch during OT to pull off the win, and he hands the Lakers their only loss of the 2001 Playoffs. And of course, it culminates in the famous step-over on Lue.

    everyone remembers the stepover- but Lue overall did an amazing job on iverson that series. as an iverson fan back int heday- i remember hating lue for being so damn tenacious, like delly was on curry- he just wouldn't accept the other guy was better- which is the attitude u need to be a great defender.

      +Rip Bg Lue has to be good enough to funnel Iverson to the double. He also got five steals. And in any case, you double the star of a team. But he's clearly hounding him better than any of the other players

    man you always hear about Tyronn Lue getting stepped over, but i never knew he was actually playing such brilliant defense on AI and totally locking him down. people should really watch this video before mocking lue for the step-over, the man was absolutely balling. +Nobody Touches Jordan props for uploading such a great video.

    • @josezepeda3146
      @josezepeda3146 8 років тому +10

      How did he lock him down iverson scored 40 how tell me how how sway how

    • @kirbykao7138
      @kirbykao7138 8 років тому +35

      Of course it would seem silly to suggest that anyone was "locked down" had he scored 48 points. However, if you watch the video more carefully, you will realize that Tyronn Lue had not been guarding Allen Iverson the entire game. He only entered the game with about 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, prior to which Iverson had already scored a staggering 38 points(30 in the 1st half and 8 in the first 7 minutes of the 3rd). Before Iverson went pure legendary and scored 7 straight points at the end of overtime, Lue had limited lverson to 3 points from shooting 1-8, while blocking one of Iverson's shots. Even if you do count in those 7 points, Iverson's stats with and without Lue on him show a significant difference. Iverson scored 38 on 15-31 shooting in the 29 minutes without Lue, and scored 10 on 3-10 shooting in the 23 minutes with Lue guarding him. While his FG% didn't suffer greatly, the discrepancy in Iverson's FGAs show how Lue's tenacious defense was affecting Iverson. Not only was he harassing Iverson into passing or taking hard shots, but his off-ball defense also prevented Iverson from even getting the ball in numerous plays, thus reducing his FGAs.
      If you examine Lue's defensive efforts through the above mentioned perspective, rather than simply citing Iverson's 48 points, you should agree that Lue did an amazing job on slowing down one of the best scorers the league has ever seen, and if you exclude those two epic minutes from Iverson at the end of OT, you might even concede that, for a brief 20 minutes, Lue had indeed "locked down" the great Allen Iverson.
      Perhaps I have exaggerated by saying Iverson was "locked down" in one of his most iconic games and one of the greatest finals individual performances ever. I was merely trying to stress how indignant I felt for Lue for having his career largely defined by the step-over, when he in fact was playing world-class defense on one of the deadliest scorers in that particular game. But I must apologize if my use of words have in any way offended Iverson's legacy. Thank you Jose for picking out my mistake!

    The only way to contain Iverson in his prime was denying him the ball or do your best trying it. TBH Lue's defense becomes effective when AI get tired after 3 quarters with Kobe on him. That's happen when you're helpless and none of your teammates can be called a scorer. We all see that in this year Finals where LBJ feels the same situation.

      I'm a lifelong Sixers fan. Look up the scorers they tried to pair him with sometime before you talk this nonsense just because you're an Iverson stan. Heard it for ten years.
      I'll give you three. Stackhouse, Jimmy Jackson, and Derrick Coleman. Three of the best scorers of their generation at one time or another. You're clueless.
      And if you don't know what a talented scorer McKie was, then don't talk. If you don't know how impressive it is for a player to average 12ppg off the bench playing with a ballhog while being completely unselfish and playing solid defense then don't talk. Stop slandering other players who gave up their own stats just to make your boy look better.

      Grim Reaper One does not win defensive player of the year because of their blocked shots alone. Shaq would have won it if that was the case ... being that he averaged more blocked shots than Mutumbo. In 2 years, Lebron will be passed his prime, and the same age as Mutumbo was in 2000. Does that make Lebron trash? He can't defend Steph Curry now, does that make him trash? LA was a force in 2000, but Philly still won more games. I don't understand why people try to make it seem like Iverson had no help.

      Probably would’ve been a better Finals if they had a young athletic Iguodala. Unfortunately he wasn’t in the league yet at that time. Also felt they should’ve kept Larry Hughes. Those 2 guys would’ve gave the Sixers better scoring without losing any sleep on defense. Cause they both can defend.

  • @jbdaggett8392
    @jbdaggett8392 8 років тому +12

    If you watch how Lue Ds AI up, you'll see the clear difference in officiating then and current. He uses a lot of hand-checking and holding off the ball (which AI did comment on). It was only a matter of time, however, before AI would find a way to break through in a clutch with 7 straight points. Lue's defensive intensity would've got him 3 to 4 fouls in today's game, so he would've had to back off. From there, AI would've cracked 50 to 60 points.

    For all Lue did, this was the only Game from March on where the Lakers did not end the game with Derek Fisher, and it was the only game they lost during that entire period. Derek Fisher ended up destroying the Sixers by the end of this series, and in all honesty Phil Jackson kind of did Philadelphia a favor by shying away from Fisher in this game. I'm no Laker fan, but had Fisher had his regular game that night, the 2001 Lakers would have been the only perfect team in NBA history.

      @TheFastStacker19 8 років тому +2

      That was prime Mutombo. In 2001, he was first team all defense, the defensive player of the year, an all star, and second team all NBA. Not to mention this Sixer team has the 6th man of the year in Aaron McKie and Coach of the Year Larry Brown.

    • @SwishScopeOfficial
      @SwishScopeOfficial 8 років тому +5

      That was not prime Mutombo, though it was still a good Mutombo. He only won DPOY because he was the best rim protector on the best defensive team, but they already were the best defensive team before they even traded for him when Theo Ratliff got injured. Prime Mutombo was the one that terrorized the Sonics. Aaron McKie winning 6th man was simply a by-product of A.I's play, when A.I wasn't on the floor with him, he wasn't standing out at all, the numbers showed. Larry Brown winning the CPOY award was legit though, A.I bought into his plan and it did wonders.
      That 2001 team had no specialists whatsoever on offense besides A.I. On defense they were superb though. At the time 3 and D players weren't even a thing, but if they were, I could imagine how much better things would've turned out. More realistically, I know this is a lot to ask for, but having an elite two way big would've been HUGE for the Sixers, I wish they had drafted KG instead of Stackhouse in 95, they'd still be bad enough to get A.I since Stackhouse's rookie year was much better than KG's. Just goes to show how hard it is to build around a player like A.I though.

    unfortunately as a sixers fan the reality was, neutralize Allen Iverson, neutralize the Sixers offense, the rest of our offense was weak compared to the lakers and their players and bench presence. I watched the game 1 defense when Lue came in on iverson and how they shut him down late in the 3rd quarter and 4th. And A.I. came in the clutch in overtime and got it back. But the rest of the series they continued to shut A.I. down with Lue and the Sixers offense was no match for the Lakers.
