- You hear and read so many recommendations for white screens in light controlled rooms. Depending on your situation, they still might be the best solution for you. For many, there still might be a case for a grey screen in a room - Silver Ticket Screens has the perfect solution. I do think they could do some work on their website and explanations on their products.

Thank you for sharing your experience. This is exactly what I have been looking. People talking about it on the Internet but few people actually have first hand experience with both screen materials. I just ordered a ST grey, an upgrade from my Joann's blackout cloth DIY screen that I have used for years. My room is 90% light controlled the white DIY screen hasn't been a problem, not great but watchable during the day. I don't watch during the day anyway, only the kids and they never notice anything. As you pointed out in your video, I also notice the black bars turning grey during bright scene and have been wondering how the new grey screen would perform in that situation. You have now answered my question and I can't wait to check it out myself when I receive it in a few days. Cheers!

@@lacrossewackerit works well. I don’t have experience with a high-end screen so I can’t compare. But I found it easy to install and the colors were neutral to my eyes. The pictures look quite good even with good amount of ambient light (i.e. early evening with windows open). Overall I’m very happy with it.
Black bars on any projector will never be black. You can use a $30,000 Sony projector you’ll still never get pure black. Oled produces pure Black by turning the pixels completely off, if the screen wasn’t black on an old panel and they turn the light off you would get whatever color the screen actually is. The only way to achieve 100% black is to have NO light. So even with a gray screen the darkest it could possibly be is the color of the screen this case is a dark gray which is much better than a white screen. A lot of people get confused and think the projector or any display produces black as well as other colors. black is not technically a color it’s the absence of all light. ALR screens do “help” do use your projector with some ambient light. The truth is the best lighting for any projector is zero light from all outside sources, Next the theater room should be painted as close to black if not black as possible. Go to any commercial theater, they have dark floors dark walls and a very dark ceiling. The only external light in a commercial theater is the “exit” sign & maybe some dim floor lights do u don’t trip getting a snack. Ideally you want a Dark floor, dark ceiling, dark walls, and 100% Control over all external and internal light (and if you have a wife that’s not an easy thing to do).

Everyone online says go with the white screen, but when I look at the video comparisons, I always feel like the blacks appear gray. I have a discontinued Epson Home Cinema 3000 and have been considering a gray screen with higher gain since I want to maintain more brights. I literally UA-camd "grey projector screen high gain", and this video popped up. Helped me make a decision after an ungodly amount of deliberation. Thanks again.

Thank you! This is a great video and told me exactly what I need to know. I have a Sony 4K projector and want to move to a 2.35:1 125 inch grey screen. I have a 110 inch white 16:9 Silver ticket now. My issue is the the Sony isn't the brightest projector and I'm a bit concerned about a dark image. Based on what I see in your room it shouldn't be a problem. I watch primarily in a completely darkened room. Thanks again I appreciate the video.

Howdy, did you ever take the plunge and get yourself a grey screen? I too have a completely darkened room. I'm just curious if these Grey screens can still be as beneficial for dropping the 'black floor' in a completely dedicated theater room, not just those with ambient lighting to control.
I have a silver-ticket Grey screen. I went the grey route because my projector is a panasonic vw430 4300 lumens super bright. So I knew the grey screen could handle the colors. Looks awesome love it.
Is your projector in a dedicated theater room, or do you have in a shared room with ambient lighting? I'm looking to put this in a dedicated room, but curious about whether the contrast boost will be as beneficial in a (near) bat cave, over my existing DIY white cloth screen.
@@lacrossewacker Its in my Man cave in the basement the light is controlled very well. I have a smart set up. I switch all my can lights to hue bulbs were I can control the lighting from my phone. I recently upgrading my projector to the 4k epson 4010. If your in a dark room I think you'll be fine with the white screen. Most newer projector black levels are really great. But it if the projector is older i would consider going grey. The new epson blew my Panasonic out the water lol.

I have had a 92 inch Silver Ticket white screen for 7 years. It's been great. Today I just ordered a 100 inch gray. 100 is just about the max I can get out of my projector at 8.5 feet away (same distance as the couch). My room is light controlled but we usually have a dim light on.

you just helped me make up my mind buying my first screen. I have the epson 5050ub sitting in bod and debating whether to open it or return it and get the LG hu810p .
I am in non-light controlled room , it's dark at night but the ceiling is white and small amount of light from the window, so I think grey is the way to go.

I currently have the white 110" Silver Ticket screen and an Epson 3700 projector. The colors are fantastic, better than a lot of direct-view TV's I've watched. It's really tempting to try the grey screen to see if the contrast/black level gets even better. I mainly watch animation, which these projectors are great for. Even in Eco mode, the colors really pop.

Your inputs has help me with my decision about choosing between white screen or grey screen. I've decided I'm going with grey screen STR-169100-G. Thank you for this video! My projector is a cheap one by yababa or something I can't remember but it does has 1080p 60hz as native so it is good picture in my opinion because I have the projector centered on the wall so I would not need to make adjustments like zooming or stretching the picture as I understand it takes away the picture quality, right now my theater looks great even on a white wall with no projector screen but I got a feeling the grey screen is going to surprise me for sure, got my fingers cross! lol Again, thanks for this video, it helps a lot.

I can back up everything you've said in my experience. I think there's always a compromise somewhere and at a point it is about taste. I prioritize contrast myself and grey is the way to go. All projectors look great when they are bright, but it's in darkness where the men separate from the boys, as they say. I'm toying with getting a secondary pull down of a high gain screen for 3D viewing. That'd be a new experiment.
Thanks for the comment. I’m testing a high gain screen now. 1.4 white. So far it’s super bright and I have to turn the lamp settings down, it’s a very good looking picture though.
I did the very same thing..I had a Da-Lite pull down 2.4 gain that got damaged when I tried to clean it. Extremely unfortunate, as they don't make this amazing screen anymore. But yes, a pull down high gain screen is a great idea for those time when you need a double gain punch!
There really isn't a lot of material regarding grey, high contrast grey, and grey "Silver" screens that i could find, my only recommendation is the darker your screen the higher Lumen output projector you require. Also, regarding the washout from opening the doors in the back there are 2 issues, one is silver screens are better with light coming from angles not straight on (ambient light not projector) the projector needs to reflect towards the audience, and once again the brighter your projector the less washout you will have.
I was about to pull the trigger On a grey screen , but i see they sell a sample kit of all the materials. Just ordered it. That way i can see EXACTLY what im dealing with between grey and darker:)

Thanks for the review. Have a silver ticket 2.35:1 screen white matte and its great but was always curious about the Grey. May switch out to Grey just to improve the blacks when light gets reflected back to the screen in bright scenes.

Did you ever get around to trying out a Grey screen, or are you still working the White Matte?
I am about to go from 16:9 high contrast 104" to a 2.35:1 128" screen. I was thinking of the white screen since I can control the light in my room. I am still not sure if I can go white or with a ALR screen since I get a lot of reflections from the screen.
If you already see a lot of reflections; I’d try a ALR.

Thanks for the detailed video. You nailed it. I have home cinema 2150 with 2500 lumens and have a room with about 10% light during day time and dark at night. I have lite colored walls but iam going to paint them to medium gray. Do u think the 2500 lumens enough with the gray screen or should I consider white? I will need ur help to decide. Thx in advance.

I have the LG hu810p laser projector and have tried several projector screen samples. Many of the samples have a slightly eggshell shine to them and it causes light speckle from the laser light source.
What do you recommend?
Something that is true matte or even slightly negative gain without spending a thousand or so?

Great question, so I’ve read a few things about laser projectors working better with lower gain screens, so you don’t have hot spots. With that being said, I’d think a matte screen with 1.0 gain would work well. But I have no way to test this theory. Give Silver Ticket Screen a call, and they have screen options not listed on their website. You’ll stay in the $500 to $800 price range.

Hi, and thanks for the comments! First, I'd consider contacting ST as they can send you samples to test with your projector. In my opinion, based on that projector, I'd consider their High Contrast Silver. It will give you some of the benefits of the grey material while stepping up your brightness. With that being said, I would call them, they are very responsive. Based on my conversation with them via email, they said most people go with their matte white screens.
Thanks for the comparison. Some good nuggets in there. I do need to ask how far is your projector mounted from your screen? I ask because I currently have 125 inch screen and an Epson 5020 15 feet away. The picture looks great but of course if you zoom in the saturation in color and detail only get better the smaller the image becomes. I’m considering upgrading to 142 acoustically, transparent silver ticket option. Currently waiting on samples to help further that choice. But wanted to ask how far away your projector is from your screen? Because I have noticed zoom in my lens all the way out accommodate 142 inches but the image to grade a bit. Thanks for the kind words. A smaller picture w zoom will always look better due to focused light in a small space. You may need to look for a screen with a lower gain.
Thank you for posting this video! I ordered a white screen, but haven’t opened it and I am thinking of returning it and getting the high contrast screen? This screen is a little bit darker than the gray; do you think that will produce an even more vibrant image with contrast?
It depends. Projector placement will have a lot to do with that, too.
Any sparkles due to the material? Also what about off axis viewing?
Also you say it is not as bright? I thought this was a 1.5 gain
This is the grey 1.0 gain screen. No sparkles since this isn’t a silver screen. They also make a High contrast silver that’s 1.5 gain, it’s known to have some sparkles but I haven’t seen one in person.
There is no resolution lost at any angle. Off Axis viewing isn’t a problem, uniformity seems constant regardless of seating position.
Fantastic video! It’s been so hard to find a proper review to make a firm decision. Your video made my decision to go ST Gray much easier. Before I pull the trigger, I just bought an Epson LS300 UST 3600 lumens in a fully light controlled room. Would you say the gray screen would work with a little light on, being that the UST is very bright? TIA!
Thanks so much. Regarding the lights, keep them off the whole time for the best results. Although we do turn ours down sometimes, the best results are when the lights are off. I hope this helps.
@@bigisland3169 fantastic actually! I’d highly recommend it. However, I had to return the ls300 and get a 5050ub because the throw was off with the ust. Screen size would’ve maxed at 95” and I wanted 120” or more.

It looks like it's matte grey, which Silver Ticket describes on their website as being "almost white."

In my opinion, the white screen is going to allow color pop, which is what most people see on their TV’s. Therefore it's probably a better fit, even in a completely dark room.

Great video man! I am having trouble getting my black levels good. I know I have an old epson 8350 but I don't want to upgrade yet cause I don't have many hours on bulb. So I was thinking of getting a grey screen but I use pull down screen and they don't make a grey pull down screen so I'm pretty much out of luck

Hey! So there is a little wash out with grey, but it’s not enough for it to matter with Epson projectors. I honestly think most people would go with white because they are used to watching on modern TVs.

Masking + white screen = win. But masking is a lost art. You either DIY or pay out the nose.
How about viewing angle on the grey screen?
Hi i have a gt1080e on a white pvc 120 inch screen but I am sitting 2
5 metres away. It quite hurts my eyes and I am not always impressed with the picture would it be better to go for a grey screen? Also my ceiling is white and room is light so i notice when the projector is on the whole room is lit up.
I think painting the walls and ceiling a dark flat color would make all the difference.

I see other people's biggest impression/benefit seems to come with the increase in contrast where there is ambient light, but I'm looking to increase contrast with my Epson LS12000 in a dedicated (dark!) home theater. Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to A & B these sorts of things when we're talking about ~130" screens!
@@lacrossewacker I just upgraded to an Epson LS11000, so near the ball park you're playing in lol. I went from a white Silver Ticket to the gray one at the same time. The contrast is perceivably better with the gray screen but my god Almighty there are some horizontal "lines" that appear dimmer that are driving me insane. I mean, in still shots you can't even see it but in crazy bright white scenes, and especially during vertical panning, it sticks out like a huge thumb in the middle righthand half of the screen. I don't know if it is a defect or what, but I did find a few other mentions of this phenomenon under all of the Amazon reviews. I just ordered an Elite Screens Cinegray 3D to try out as a replacement at this point which will hopefully be defect-free. Maybe I'm just too picky haha?
I'm wondering which screen to choose, I have a dark room, lights are fully controlled and I have epson 6050UB, I'm looking to have 113.5"/115" diagonal at 2:35:1 aspect ratio, I don't know what gain I should go with 2,500 lumens, which one of these is suitable
1. STR - 235115 SILVER 1.4 GAIN.
2. STR - 235115 1.1 GAIN
3. STR - 235115 GREY 1.0 GAIN
4. STR - 235115 HIGH CONTRAST 0.95
That's a good question, and I think 4 would be a great choice.

Just picked up the Epson 4010. Do you think I should go with the white or the gray screen. I'm going to be in a dark room with no light.
I’d go with the white screen since you will be in a light-controlled environment with the Epson 4010.

Yes, but, I don't think the model projector you asked about is from their UB line or have the higher lumen rating, so a white screen should allow you to have a much brighter image which most consumers prefer.

anybody know how the grey screen will work with a Anker Cosmos Nebula 4k with 1500 ANSI lumens? I bought the projector when I didn;t know too much about projectors and am now realizing that it isn't the brightest projector. I have nothing to comapare it to though. Most of the time it seems bright enough for me. The only issues are that the blacks always seem washed out and watching any kind of show that takes place in darkness is a struggle.
I bought the capsule at 300 lumens🤣 Really wish I had returned it during the grace period.
Try the high contrast one they have. It is way better, I've had both.

What color walls/ceiling did you have?
I have the Sony 695es. I had a cinegrey 3d screen but saw some hot-spotting along with it being too reflective on very dark scenes. Went with the white silver ticket and while the colors looked great, the contrast was really poor due to my white ceiling.
I just got an ibeam x9000 which is 4000 lumens. I am back and forward between white and silver. I will have it in my game room that has one window that will either have a black out curtain or blinds. not sure which to choose....🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Based on your lumens, go with the white screen.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you sure they didn't just send a white screen by mistake? Is it definitely one of thier grey models?
It’s their grey screen. In comparison with the white screen vs. grey one, I tried to make the point about how similar the screens are, and it took something like printer paper being placed close to each to see the difference.
My gray screen is more of a gunmetal and I haven't noticed any difference maybe slightly but not much different than the white screen I started with
What brand screen do you use? Any recommendations?
I'm using 120 inch deluxe screens that I bought off of Amazon for 300 and I think it's amazing I don't even use a TV anymore LOL an ambient light hasn't been a huge problem

I don’t have a screen yet but I do have a Hisense ust and I’ve gotten a few compliments from people saying it looks great and I need to hurry up and get a screen 😅
LCD projecter 8000 lumens what is the best material for this type of lumens
That’s super bright, if truly 8000 lumens. I’d consider a .7 gain screen.

Good view on the Grey screen. I am looking at a Viewsonic X100-4K+ which is an LED based projector due to the throw ratio and my wife seeing the rainbow effect. My concern is the projector only has 2900 lumens (1200 Ansi Lumens). What is your advice? Would a 1.2 Gain grey screen give a brirht enough picture?
If you can control lighting, go with a 1.2 white screen. The majority of viewers will prefer this to a grey screen.
I have lg hu80ka and my room is completely dark and my ceiling is white and my walls are orange so which screen should I get ? Please help.... and yes great video bro keep it going ❤️
Take a look at the high contrast silver, but note most projectors are factory calibrated for white screens, so you’d want make sure the gain is not going to cause any issues. Silver ticket has patches of their screen material they will send you. I am not as familiar with LG.

I haven’t tested elite screens products, it’s possible the gain on your screen is different than Silver Ticket screens. Also, you should recalibrate your projector when you install a new screen. Are your settings the same? What’s the Elite Screens gain?
Home Theater Hobby sir gain is 1.0 and I tried so many picture settings but the picture looks really dull and when I tried on my white ceiling it was very clear I’m confused now and can u check the projector lg hu80ka
@@noumanjamshaidali4078 I took a look at your projector model in hopes of helping you. Before we get into that, I'd like to point out that you are using a screen I've never seen in person; not the one I recommended. Since screen manufacturers' technology varies, you should consider those variables when reading the next few comments. The LG HU80KA has the following ANSI Lumens ratings: Vivid 865 max; Standard 851 max; Cinema 515 max; Sports 864 maz; Game 839 max; and TechExpert 510 max. This means your projector brightness is lower than competitors' projectors, say, 1200 lumens like other brands. I'm not sure if that's because it's a laser projector or not. I don't know much about those models. The next thing coming to mind is the brightness output can be reduced by 04% with your projector. The cause is the mirror light; however, it's specs show a brightness uniformity at 87%, which is good. Lastly, any grey screen can reduce brightness because it's not pushing light back toward the viewer as a white matte screen does. Based on what you are saying, the low lumens might be your concern. Not knowing your projector's internal settings, I don't know what manual adjustment may be needed. You might need a manual adjustment outside a mode change like vivid, standard, or other. I haven't looked at any Elite Screen reviews on youtube, so I don't know what adjustments others have made in your situation. I hope this helps.
