He killed the mad scientist, he killed the plan, saved Julie from lonliness and turn she gave him peace and thanks. Just like many a noir detective story, even though you die, you win.

Miller's arc from where we met him to where we ended. Just perfect. This concludes the first book. Just imagine, that's 1 of 9 in the story as a whole. So yeah, you can safely assume we might not be done with the protomolecule. Finally, you know how much Miller changed over the course of his arc? There are others, some you've met, some you haven't, but they change, in ways that make sense. The kiss was not scripted - Florence and Thomas ad libbed it. Finally, yes, it's true. It ramps up from here in ways you are not ready for. It honestly gets better from here, but as for one single episode, yeah, that one was kind of special.... Still not even in my top 3 though. It makes me so happy to see people fall in love with this: it allows me to feel that all over again as if for the first time, so thank you!
About the kiss: I guess I got here first, so I'll give you the story about that. So, the kiss was not scripted. Florence Faivre (Julie) and Thomas Jane (Miller) improvised that, and the producers left it in after some discussion. In an episode of the Ty and That Guy podcast, Ty Franck (book co-author and producer on the show) says rather unambiguously that he hated it, but was (in, apparently, a fairly rare moment of disagreement) overruled by show runner Naren Shankar, who felt it was needed for closure or something. For his part, Ty said it implied that there was a romantic connection between the characters, and that was never the intention. Personally, I thought it seemed a bit out of place at the time, but I've since made my peace with it by conceding that the protomolecule was essentially manipulating them both at that point. Julie had seen visions of Miller before that, Miller had seen visions of Julie, and both of them seemed to know things about the other that they had no reason to know. For instance, when Miller tells Julie he was hired to find her and bring her home, she says "kidnap job," which is what he quipped when given the job way back in S1E1. Similarly, right before the kiss, Julie says to Miller, "you belong with me," which is what he tells Naomi Julie says to him in his visions of her. And then there's the bird, which seems to be a symbol of their connection across time and space. The bird is a sparrow, which in Greek mythology is a symbol of pure, spiritual love and connection (not lust or sexual connection), suggesting that there was some manner of destiny involved here, or at least that the protomolecule and whoever controls it wanted Julie and Miller to be, or believe they should be, together. In the end, the kiss wasn't depicted as passionate or romantic, really, it was more a symbol of connection, of relief, of finally at long last being where they "belonged." That's how I justify it, anyway. In the end, I think it works. But I can understand why Ty hated it, too.
yeah. always felt that show only fans were pushing that way too. I can more or less accept the kiss , but it would have been better without it. her holding him his head on her chest would have been better. To each their own i guess.
I figured while Miller was walking through the station the protomolecule was already starting to affect him, read him. And I took the moment to be basically the protomolecule weaving them together, linking them. Julie started to know him, he started to know her.
Absolutely disliked it. Already was 50+ seeming to be creepily obsessed with some hot 20 year old. The kiss just felt like old writer guy wish fulfillment, didn't make sense for the story to me as it felt like an out of place sexual thing instead of what it should have been which was just connection. I was glad to hear when Ty said that in the podcast.
@@wtimmins I figured the moment he took his helmet off and got infected, they were basically linked, so that justified it. I don't think the kiss was really needed, though.

As a guy in the military who is very probably past his prime, I fell in love with Miller's character when he was sitting in the train trying to remember if he ever was good at his job. I might be alone with this but I really like the kiss. For me it's not a romantic kiss but a kiss of comfort and death. An expression of closeness in a way.
For me The scene that got me was Avasarala’s phone call with her husband. How you’ve built your whole life with someone and how you face living the rest of your life without them. And Miller reminded me of the poem by Keats Ode to a Nightengale. Where the bird guides the seeker to his beloved. My favorite moment is when Miller fed Julie the nuke. I think that act of trust gave her a lot of energy, gave her strength to control Eros. I loved your reaction and it was honest and beautiful. I remember sitting in absolute silence at the end of the episode.
Arjun was such a highlighted moment in this episode. He expresses his love and admiration for Crisjen so beautifully and just as fierce as she deserves. It was unexpected. I didn't realize that's what Miller did with the nuke! That makes so much sense in hindsight!
I don't know how much of an in-universe 'screen watcher' you are, but Julie's username on space tinder was 'Delightengale' so it's entirely possible this was a deliberate allusion, especially given how often the bird shows up linking Miller and Julies' stories together.
Clinton Shorter's beautiful score is a major reason that this episode packed such an emotional wallop; he doesn't get nearly enough recognition for his contribution to the series.
I cried those same tears when I watched the first time. I also cried for Julie. When she said "what happened to me? I don't like it" it devastated me. Her body was used for science with no consent. At least she got to control her end, but she deserved so much better. I'm sad we didn't get to have her longer.
Especially because Miller was someone who never belonged anywhere. On Ceres he was corrupt cop, an earther loving welwala and the station joke. As Dawes put it: "A belter looking to find his way home". When he was inspired by Julie he finally found a direction in life, something to belong to. He was fighting the good fight alongside Holden. But after he killed Dresden and was shunned by his new friends he was lost once again. He belonged nowhere, nobody wanted him. He stayed behind with the nuke because that's what Julie would have done. But then he found her and with her he finally found what he was looking for. The Belter finally found his way home.
An explanation for the visions that I've heard from Ty (on the podcast IIRC) is that because Julie and Miller were both absorbed or assimilated (or whatever) by the protomolecule, they are linked together through all of time. Because the protomolecule breaks all the rules of physics and space time, the fact that they were "joined" in the future is enough for both of them to receive visions in the past. To what extent these visions are genuine manifestations of themselves or the manipulations of the protomolecule is up for debate. Probably a mix of both.
"They're going to stay with Eros even if it kills them" is probably one of my favorite lines in the series. It's a reflection of the sheer determination and heroism of the Roci crew🙂👍
I'm proud of you for sharing your tears. Some people are afraid to cry or to be seen crying. I don't understand that. If you are living a life without any tears, you are doing it wrong. So, thank you.
This must be one of the best sci-fi episodes ever. It is superbly made - the visual aspects, the music and also the dialogue! And Miller's storyline is perfectly wrapped up here. It is a fitting end for the character and quite poetic in a way. But what always gets me first in this episode is Chrisjen and Arjun. Their conversation is truly heartfelt and, well, it makes this dusty middle-aged historian cry. Well, back to the books - rewatching the series also made me read the books again. I guess The Expanse is addictive...
No matter how many times I see it, the crew toasting Miller with his bottle of Ganymede Gin always gets to me. Miller was invited and welcomed by Proto-Julie, it maintained a survivable environment. Were those hallucinations of Julie actually the Protomolecule communicating with him? Great reaction.
Yes it was the PM communicating with him. When they meet and Miller is infected, that moment rippled backwards in time. The authors specifically state this. Now that we’ve watched the entire show: ::SPOILERS:: PM sent signals backwards in time to ensure this moment happened (visions of Julie, birds, etc). Also, Julie’s dying vision of Miller that @@funnylilgalreacts mentions, wearing the hat, was a foreshadowing of future episodes where the hat makes an appearance 😉
The best thing I do on youtube is watching people falling in love with the Expanse.6 seasons of masterful story and visuals that ends beautifully and respectfully. You are in for greatness, so enjoy every second. Im reading (listening) to the books now and woooo you get so much more context to Miller's perspective during his arc and him on Eros...he has more layers than a rock tunnel
Home is such a great name for the episode. Julie is broken and just trying to get home. Earth - the home to most and ancestral home of all people is under threat. And then there's the conversation Anderson Dawes had with Miller in the bar: "Maybe you haven't lost everything yet. When you do.. you'll know your way home."
Well here we are! An emotional and amazing reaction to an absolutely amazing beautiful episode! Anderson Dawes told Miller he hadn't lost everything but when he had he would see what's important clearly and find his way "Home!" Miller told Naomi that he dreamed Julie would hold his hand and say " You belong with me. " The writing, directing, acting, music score, and special effects are amazingly impeccable! R.I.P. Miller! Chrisjen's scene with her husband was so moving! I see you were moved by the toast scene with the Rocinante crew.... that moment really gets me.... even now 😢 I don't think I can explain just how emotional and impactful this is!? But there are so many more wonderful and emotional moments ahead for you! I hope you enjoy the ride! I know we are here for you and will enjoy your journey! Screaming Firehawk!
"He never got to taste the rain" - There was this fleeting moment in episode 9 of season 1, just after Miller and the Roci crew left Julie's hotel, where (at around minute 19) Miller stands and just lets some drops of condensation water drop on his head. Silly me always assumed that was a reference to a similar scene in "Alien", but - no, your remark has just brought me to fully understand that little moment.
It was also an irony.. Miller on Ceres wore a hat.. when asked what was with the hat inside a closed station he said "keeps the rain away from me" as a joke.. then he loses the hat (left it on Ceres) and when stepping in the first ever different place in his life (Miller had never got out of Ceres) "rain" falls on him
I wonder how many viewers noticed the irony at 21:50. Remember when Drummer told Fred after he captured Earth’s missiles that he was the most powerful man in the belt, to which Fred replied to her, “Then go get me a cup of coffee.” Well, at 21:50 you see Drummer doing just that.
22:51 I knew... It happened to us all... I just want to give you the biggest hug. You feel things so strongly. Its refreshing to see pure emotion. You've become my favorite reactor! I hate waiting a week but its honestly the one video I look forward to every week, the most.
Re-watching this reaction... this show does strong female characters so well. Avasarala is amazing and that scene with her husband gets me every time!😢😂
Hahahaha, had no idea "you're killing me Smalls" was such a widespread exclamation. Glad you're liking it so much. My thoughts on what happened are colored by having seen ahead, so I'll just say: can't wait to see what you think going forward!
The most beautiful episode of television to ever Grace our vision - there are seasons and seasons to go still - I am so jealous of your journey forward into The Expanse
I like the look on the military scientist's face when he sees the captain of this OPA ship is the (in)famous James Holden. It's the look of a man who just realized who the protagonist is.
This series has to be the best sci fi ever made from the stand point of hard science coupled with fantastic story telling. That you can have this level of humanity in a show about such things has always floored me. I’m so glad you’re watching this.
Chrisjen and Arjun keep running into the light lag delay of signals going to and from the Moon. Here on Earth, we take instantaneous electronic communications for granted. However, once we get out into space we are going to have to learn to think differently, again.
I feel horrible honored to have been allowed to share this episode with you. I was in the same state as you my first view…which was technically a “read”… Miller was my fav from chapter one. And yeah…strap in Fellow Firehawk, here comes the juice !!! S3 is my fav.
Regarding Nukes: Typically, nukes of any size have enough shielding or keeping discrete amounts separated or other schemes to keep them from leaking excessive radioactive decay or going crtitical mass and explode prematurely as a "dirty bomb". Otherwise our military would be having support staff diying left and right just doing service inspections and maintenance on our current arsenel of missiles.
I am so glad you are reacting to this series... You get it, you appreciate it! This ep left me shook - and silent. But the series never stops. You are in for one hell of a ride!
Aw, girl... here we are... The music during Miller and Julie's meeting just accentuated the emotions going on in this scene. To me, Miller and Julie are like doomed star crossed lovers and since the PM can changes the laws of physics, their joining sent ripples back through time to plant Julie in Millers head and on Julie's deathbed, the image of Miller with the bird, IMO. By the time they get to the end, they mean more to each other than we could probably imagine. People found the kiss weird, but I thought it felt natural because of this. Very honest reaction, Angela. Thank you for giving us this. The smiles are for what is awaiting you and there's soooo much more to love about this series. Some of my favorite bits are with Holden thinking Miller wants to negotiate with a spaceship, the banter between Fred and Dummer, and just all of Miller and Julie. RIP Miller!
When this episode aired, a lot of people said it was the best episode of sci-fi they have ever seen. But then along came S2. Then came S3. As others have said, it only gets better and better.
This episode absolutely proves that this show deserves an Emmy Award. This is how you tell an EPIC saga. The acting is perfect, the production top notch. To come to love a character sooo much that started out as an average character is so well done. This episode exemplifies why it is now my all time favorite sci-fi TV series. Take a deep breath, wipe away those tears (but keep the tissues near by) book 1 is done. Do know, that the writers of the books, are very much involved in the writing of each episode. On to book 2. cheers.
10:01 Absolute chills when I first watched that massive nuclear launch from Earth accompanied by that eerie music and vocals. Something like that was never supposed to happen as nuclear weapons are meant as a deterrent (in this world toward Mars) only.
Gotta shout out Clinton Shorter for the string quartet we hear during Miller's time with Julie. That was such a monumental moment; the climax of both characters' arcs over a season and a half. And the music did such a great job amplifying the already intense emotions of their meeting. The score is always good, but in that scene it's on another level.
And that glee and excitement and that "let's goooo" it's why I love watching reactions of this show. And this is like the "prologue" of the entire story.... can't wait to see your mind go boom 😄
I'm glad you're liking it! And yes, as others have pointed out, this is where book 1 concludes. Next episode picks up with a short story that the authors released, which is then interspersed with the beginning of book 2. The ride has just begun. The best thing about the Expanse is that everything leads into and from everything else. So strap in, let the juice flow, and uh... don't forget anything. Lol.
Binging my way through this as I found these reactions just the other day. It's been the most enjoyable "rewatch" for me and seeing your reactions and emotions just goes to show that I feel justified in my own reactions even as I watch these for the 4th or 5th time. I can't wait to catch up and hopefully finish this series out as you do. I know you're already well into some later seasons, but this ending was just an impactful moment and I know the rest of the series is going to be well worth following your journey based on it.
Don't be shy about checking out the solar system. It's a key character in this story. For many this story is an introduction or reintroduction to the solar system. So you lose nothing and perhaps gain more significance as places are introduced. Keep to the astronomy stuff though... Even if you just peruse a coffee table book... I'm saying this because I think Demos and Eros are owed curated eulogies for you as characters in the story. Even though they remain in our sky.
Great job! Welcome to the point of no return. Lots of good questions left to answer, and perhaps new ones added. Venus is definitely a rocky planet with a surface, but it's atmosphere is definitely uninhabitable as we understand habitability. One of my favorite things about The Expanse is that often whatever your first impression of a character is, you often end up at the exact opposite feeling by the end of their arc.
Best episode of sci-fi ever as far as I'm concerned. Heart wrenching, action packed, beautiful. It has everything. So much amazing story in front of you, it's really only just starting, Book 1 is just laying the groundwork.
That scene with Miller and Julie got me emotional in both in the book and in the show. Miller's always been my favorite character, glad to see you come around on him ; ).
Avasarala's relationship with her husband is also beautiful in the books. It's kind of like John Adams and Abigail Adams - Avasarala is like John Adams: brilliant, abrasive, and hard to get along with. Arjun is like Abigail: congenial, the silent confidant, and the source of their partner's strength.
I sound like Fred Johnson. "I never thought I'd see the day" where she'd cry over Miller. But this is without doubt my favorite sci-fi show ever. There are so many parallels for me between this show and my favorite sci-fi game Mass Effect including our obsessive love for our crewmates. It's wonderful.
I always cry in this episode. Miller’s journey rips your heart out along the way. I didn’t love him at first but he creeps in there. It was a beautiful moment with him & Julie.

I cried those same tears when I watched the first time. I also cried for Julie. When she said "what happened to me? I don't like it" it devastated me. Her body was used for science with no consent. At least she got to control her end, but she deserved so much better. I'm sad we didn't get to have her longer.
One of my favorite episodes! It’s a crime that this show never won an emmy. Great reaction @funnylilgalreacts!
When Julie says "you belong with me" kills me every time 😭
Especially because Miller was someone who never belonged anywhere.
You know I just realized that it's also the protomolecule itself saying this about Miller. The stuff you see on a rewatch !😁👍
Did you notice Amos and Holden’s faces when Naomi was in full lecture mode? Like a couple of kids getting told off.
"They're going to stay with Eros even if it kills them" is probably one of my favorite lines in the series. It's a reflection of the sheer determination and heroism of the Roci crew🙂👍
It sums up our crew in a nutshell. I love them for that. The willingness to give up their lives for what needs to be done. Heroes.
The Nerdy Nightly reaction of s2e5 dropped today. After watching, had to come back and re-watch your reaction, two stellar reactions!
I need to go watch it! Thank you for watching mine!!!
@@funnylilgalreacts Absolutely! The best reactions!!
That scene at the end always gets me, one of my favorites from the whole show
The show has some heartfelt beautiful scenes, but that one was breathtaking. Everything about it was perfect.
@@funnylilgalreacts more coming, sooner than you might think
Dude watch your back!!! You got that damn protomolecule all over that wall!!!
I'm proud of you for sharing your tears. Some people are afraid to cry or to be seen crying. I don't understand that. If you are living a life without any tears, you are doing it wrong. So, thank you.
The more I re watch this episode the more it feels philosophical. Rest in peace Josephus Miller, such an awesome guy
Thank you for allowing us to share in your journey.
And here we go .... I still get emotional watching this episode
It. Keeps. Getting. Better. So strap in and hold on, this crazy ride ain't over yet!
"you're killin me Smalls". 🤣
It's amazing, every time I see that scene with Miller and Julie I get something in my eye. What're the odds?
I'm so glad you came to love him! He is my spirit guide.
He found acceptance in that crew. He found a peace and home with Julie. It was a beautiful send off.
Yes it was the PM communicating with him. When they meet and Miller is infected, that moment rippled backwards in time. The authors specifically state this. Now that we’ve watched the entire show:
::SPOILERS::
PM sent signals backwards in time to ensure this moment happened (visions of Julie, birds, etc).
I see you were moved by the toast scene with the Rocinante crew.... that moment really gets me.... even now 😢
I don't think I can explain just how emotional and impactful this is!? But there are so many more wonderful and emotional moments ahead for you! I hope you enjoy the ride! I know we are here for you and will enjoy your journey!
Screaming Firehawk!
You need more subscribers, sister. Your reactions are honest and human. I really love them.
That explosion in Jupiter would have decimated Earth. It's as big as Earth itself.
What explosion in Jupiter?
Thanks for letting me cry again. :D Beautiful episode.
~ You belong with me ~ T_T crying the whole time
This is the one I was waiting for
22:51 I knew...
"as long as none of them wear a stupid hat" 🤣💀🤣💀🤣💀🤣💀
"Consciousness run amok." Sounds like earth to be frank. Beautiful reaction to a beautiful story.
Welcome to the family girl. I cried all over again with you. One of the best shows Ever 💙
I've seen these scenes multiple times and I still get teary eyed every single time. That ending is just so beautiful. I'm glad you love the show.
A+ Sandlot reference. Ha!
"He never got to taste the rain..." Don't forget that you said that. ;)
Miller is the best space cowboy there has ever been, what a journey
I feel horrible honored to have been allowed to share this episode with you. I was in the same state as you my first view…which was technically a “read”…
Miller was my fav from chapter one.
And yeah…strap in Fellow Firehawk, here comes the juice !!! S3 is my fav.
Season 3 is the best, especially episodes 6 and 7.
They do a good job softening you up with the Avasarala and Arjun, then they gut punch you with Miller and Julie. Excited for what's to come :)
This is one of those episodes that makes you just need to lay down after watching. There will be a few more in the show.
I cry evertiem.
Love that you love the Expanse. It is a great series, highly underrated.
Miller was the scrappy stray dog who wandered in with scruffy hair and a tendency to snap at you and yet... he became *our* stray.
7:05 nukular warhead, nice touch
On to book 2. cheers.
Wow!! You got quite emotional with this one.
And so we ended up on Venus. Remember though the Protomolecule is still out there and is becoming.
Can't stop the work!!
*raises glass to miller*
here's to the man who saved earth!
Oh boy, been waiting for this..❤
Don't be shy about checking out the solar system.
Emotional overload 101 I cried like a baby watching this... A 50 year old baby.
Great reaction!
Characters in this show have the best character arks in TV, ever.
Awesome episode, and you are in for such a ride season 2
Oh my GOD, the HAT, *THE HAT*…
seriously, though, beautiful, beautiful reaction, Angela. Worthy of the show, and particularly this episode.🙂
We laughed and cried, what more could you ask for.
OK, I'm convinced. This is seriously good stuff.
I always cry in this episode. Miller’s journey rips your heart out along the way. I didn’t love him at first but he creeps in there. It was a beautiful moment with him & Julie.
I love your reactions. My favorite moment had to be "Your killing me Smalls!" My favorite quote ever that I use all the time. Thank you.
Every time you said something to the tune of "guys am I going to start caring about Miller?", I have been waiting for you to get to this. You are spot on, THIS SHOW IS AMAZING, and am looking forward to seeing how amazed you will be
This show-its stories and characters and visuals-is beautiful in a way few things have been beautiful to me.
