Even though I am Malaysian, the Thaipusam make me feel like in India country, I don't know how the tamil indian in India celebrate Thaipusam, but Malaysia Indian definitely bring the culture back to here
Thaipusam is a "Hindu celebration among the Tamils across the globe to commemorate the victory of Lord Muruga over a demon using a divine spear." It's not the name of the place. She meant well but couldn't explain better possibly due to language barrier. Singapore, Sri Lanka, India are among some of the other countries which celebrate Thaipusam.
I think I kind of figured that out later, but I’m glad you clarified for me! Thanks a bunch! I wish I could communicate with everyone 😢. Either way, that was an amazing experience!
Thaipusam actually refers to the month and star that occurs on the day of the celebration. Tamil calendar uses sun, solar planets and 27 stars movements as reference. Thai is the name of the month. Pusam is the name of the star that coincide on this day. It's the day when Parvati, lord Murugan's mother bestowed him with a spear that can kill Surapadman, a demon.
The priest chanted mantras for your wellbeing & your wife's. The fruit has been blessed ritually. The pot contains cow's milk which is offered to Lord Muruga for making their vows. Shaving heads is also an offering made for their wellbeing/for fulfilling their vows 😊

I would say that you were so lucky to witness the deity Lord Murugan so near at the main temple in the cave. You were so blessed too to witness the arrival of the Silver Chariot that travelled more than 19 hours into Batu Caves. Upon the arrival of the chariot, a huge flag with a rooster symbol on it will be raised at the tall flag pole near to the entrance marking the official beginning of the religious festival. I remember you were asking about the number of steps and the height of the Lord Murugan statue right? Here's the answer. The staircase has 272 steps and the statue is 42.7 meters tall. Hope you had a great time here in our nation and at our temple.

Congrats Brad, you managed the monkeys brilliantly on your first attempt😂. They are naughty guys indeed. Thaipoosam - You can see a weapon on Lord Murugan hand in statue. It"s called VEL. the day Murugar got VEL was celebrated as Thaipoosam. He got that VEL from his mother(Parvathi) to win war against Asuras(Demon). In INDIA / TAMIL NADU we celebrate this festival every year because Murugar is god of Tamil. Hi Brad, your coverage on Malaysia is awesome.. Thank you.. I was in Minnesota for 12 years and I loved America.. When I travel solo I actually move around quickly, record all day, and it’s a lot of work. She doesn’t like that. So next time I’m in Malaysia I’ll likely be alone, especially because I plan to come back and jump all over the country!
Hi Bro., Batu caves have beautiful shrines and you have visited in the right festival time. I think that the monkeys must have seen the fruits which you were carrying. Excellent 🎥 filming and done a great job. By the way the people there speak Tamil which is a native language of Tamil Nadu in India and in Jaffna in Sri Lanka. There are lot of Tamil speaking people in Malaysia and it is one of the official languages in Malasia.👌👍
The devotees walk along the chariot with bare foot. They started 9pm on the day before and reached Batu Cave near 6pm. Almost a 19 hours journey.👍 Happy Thaipusam to everyone. 🎉🎉
Hi, Brad. I think the vendor at the jewellery shop is from India, not Malaysian Indian. Because Batu Caves is a touristic place & for the vendor to not understand basic English is IMPOSSIBLE. Malaysians basically can speak 3 languages; own language + English + Malay.
Ya I figured but I never want to assume. I think the “where are you from” was the wrong question to ask. But how can I ask without being too intrusive? “What are you?” Haha jk that’s not cool. I’m impressed that everyone knows so many languages.

Hi happen to bump into your video (your first video i've watched btw :) ) thank you for visiting Malaysia and witnessing our festival. Along your video, i notice you got few questions unanswered... so here you go, Thaipusam (Thai : 10th month in indian calender, "Pusam : one of the star in indian astrology) is celebrated as the day Lord Murugan (god of Tamil) got his divine Vel (spear) from his mom Parvati and victory of killing the demon with Vel (also reflects as the sharpness of knowledge and discipline) against a demon surapadman. It is believed that by taking Kavadi (large structure carried by devotees) or paal kudam (milk pot) humans would wash out their sins also for some if their prayers are heard they vow to do so as well. It had multiple believes depending on individuals . Those big structures or building you see before you climb the stairs are also temple of various god and goddess. The sculpture of goddess in black saree (indian traditional attire) with trident is goddess Durga (incarnation of goddess parvati). Regarding the ticket you bought, its to do archanai (mini pooja) and they will give you the offering and there is no entrance fee. Its also optional to give them money not compulsory. The devotees with bald head applied santhanam (sandal wood powder) to cool off their newly bald head . They actually offered Mudi kanikai (cut off their hair) as offering to got similar to paal kudam and kavadi. The deepam (Ghee oil lamp) is lit as an offering to any god or goddess as well and it is not made of wax, the lamp is made of soil and the oil is Ghee oil. The powder that they applied on your forehead is called Thiruneer. You can google about it to know more significant things im just briefly explaining what i could. And one more thing Join your palm and bow your head a little thats how you pray or greet the god and then you can put on thiruneer or santhanam (sandal wood powder) or kumkum (red vermillion powder) or all 3. The drum like instruments is called melam and also Urumi (one of the indian culture instrument). Purpose of the chariot is we are welcoming Lord Murugan who travelled from his mom's (Parvati) temple. The kavadi dance symbolize as celebrating the Lord, those songs is devotional songs. If you stayed the whole day or night of thaipusam you can see whole lot of different designs of kavadis. Hope it helps. Good day to you and stay safe.
Amazing! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer all these questions! It really helps me understand and appreciate everything I saw! This is a 💯 top comment for sure! Thank you so much 🙏🥰
You did a great job producing this video brother. One foolish mistake you did was carrying a partially transparent bag with fruits promptly displayed for the monkeys to grab. Should have listened to the guy you met at the starting of the stairs, and given the fruits to the monkeys for a trouble free climb up to the top. Sometimes our common sense betrays us. Very valuable lesson though. Keep discovering, "Malaysia, Truly Asia".
Hi Brad, hope you manage to see where they poking their touge with spear...or their cheek. Some hang the hook behind their back. The step was 272steps, right up to top.
Haha I forget the name but kinda close to city center. I stayed in Ceylonz tower and google mapped places nearby with pics of clean cuts lol. I wish I knew the name! Regardless…. Thanks 😎🙏
The pot on the head is called “paal kavadi” or “theertha kavadi” . Paal kavadi is milk . Theertha kavadi is sanctified water . I am Malaysian , just started to learn about Hinduism

He got that VEL from his mother(Parvathi) to win war against Asuras(Demon). In INDIA / TAMIL NADU we celebrate this festival every year because Murugar is god of Tamil. ( Tamil is one of the oldest living language in the world )
Ahhhh, I wasn’t sure if I heard “vel” correctly before. Thank you that helps me understand so much better 🙏🥰
It's another Hindu deity
Just like ayappa
Keep up the good work you're doing really well. Big things come to those who keep trying and you're doing that. 💯👍

I love the way you respect others culture and tradition. Glad that I came across this video full of positivity today. Wish you lots of success and happiness in life bro. Love from 🇲🇾🫡
Thank you very much! I definitely always want to learn as much as possible. But I know every culture has their own traditions and behaviors. So sometimes I worry I may be doing something disrespectful without knowing. If there is a language barrier, I find that watching people’s facial expressions is a universal teller. Thanks for the positive wishes!!! 🙏🥰😁

Thank you so much for the beautiful documentary Brad. Next year you should visit Ipoh, 2⅐ hours journey from Kuala Lumpur for Thaipusam celebration. You'll able to observe more of the rituals very closely and good explanation indeed
That sounds awesome! I’ve heard a lot of people say to celebrate in Penang too, do you have a preference?
Finally your latest video uploaded..
Hehe I’ve been anxious to get the next one up 🥰thanks for watching!!
Thanks brad..appreciating our culture ❤❤❤
Your culture is amazing! Honestly, this is why I travel! So many beautiful things to learn
Amazing video thanks ❤
Thank you very much!! This was so fun!🤩
Hi Brad, your coverage on Malaysia is awesome.. Thank you.. I was in Minnesota for 12 years and I loved America.. Honestly you need to get a local who can speak english well to explain the country , culture and everything here buddy. I see that you are having a tough time to communicate .. yet you have done a great job mate!
Ya communication has been tough, but I’m glad I still made it through. Thanks a lot for the support!
This is Amazing 😮
Glad you liked it! It was awesome being there! Where are you commenting from?
Hey Brad glad to see you have a lot respect to differect cultures and religion. I am actually Malaysian but I live in LA since the ageof 3 I usually visit back to Malaysia with my Fam, but its been a while since I have been back. I intend to visit Malaysia in June for our Summer break. Thank you for sharing this amazing video makes me feel happy to hear my Lanuguage and your communications with them is great. I hope you enjoyed the food there.Take care safe travels!!!!
Amazing! So happy to share my experience! Interacting with Malaysian people has been such a positive thing for me and I’m loving your country! I hope you have a safe and wonderful trip in June! Who knows, maybe I’ll be back there during that time !
OMG!!! Brad I am so happy when I saw your reply..I have to give you props for being able to undertsnad the accent...its takes a bitc but I think overall Malaysian Indian(Tamil) usually do speak English and not shy even if niot that fluent, as long as they cn help one find their way around.
Thats going to be awesome!!! if you would be there as I have so much Family still there and I will be traveling with my Son for the first time to Malaysia that would be a great experience. My Family and I would love to show you and your Family around. Take Care shoot me a msg when you will be in Malaysia next.
@@ranisidhu8007thank you ! It takes a bit for sure, but I think since I go from country to country often, I’m getting better at interpreting different accents faster! (I think)
Wow that’s super exciting!thank you so much for the offer! I have a wife (of 6 months) but when I do UA-cam travel, she prefers to stay home. We do our own vacations in a more relaxing way. When I travel solo I actually move around quickly, record all day, and it’s a lot of work. She doesn’t like that. So next time I’m in Malaysia I’ll likely be alone, especially because I plan to come back and jump all over the country!
Well Vlogged brother, your respectful and kind acts in the temple can inspire people around the world to explore various cultures.
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun doing this one. This is the definition of why I love travel so much!
Very nice video, Thankyou.
Glad you enjoyed it!! ❤️
I’m so lucky to be there during that time! I didn’t know about thaipusam until I got there! I see gotcha! Thanks!🙏
Thank you for this beautiful video really appreciate
Super happy to hear it! No problem! Thanks for the nice comment!! 🥰🙏
Bro. Your scene with the monkey is very thrilling like a horror movie. haha
Hahahahaa I was legit scared!!! Like I was being attacked, surrounded by people who couldn’t do anything to help me! lol glad I made it up safely! 🙉

Your video on Thaipusam was really cool and thanks for promoting our country and culture. Only the monkeys entry were quite disturbing. Me too experienced the same whenever I visit Batu Caves. The monkeys are after the fruits in the prashasam that you are caring.either give to the monkeys or put inside your backpack whenever you visit Batu Caves next.I normally will do that. You are just cool. Thanks
Thanks for the awesome comment! I will for sure be more prepared for the monkeys next time!! Using a backpack will be helpful, especially since I like to buy things and have otherwise needed to carry stuff.
Thanks bro!! Good Thaipusam

Great job, we are visiting Kuala Lumpur end March 2024, can you wear shoes going up and into the caves, are you going anywhere else? We are also visiting Penang and Langkawi any general tips or places to visit, are you still in Malaysia

Thank you for the amazing video Brad! I’m not sure if you managed to see the silver chariot however if you are coming again, I should bring you along with the whole process of thaipusam with detailed explanation 🙌
That would be amazing! No I didn’t see the silver chariot. I actually wasn’t sure if the first one was it or not.
@@WhereisBrad what you saw is a glimpse of kavadi, which is an offering to lord murugan - it could be a form of being thankful or it can be also a form of carrying kavadi(burden) and laying it upon lord murugan to take care of the rest. Where else that chariot is another deal you can watch a short documentary of it here ua-cam.com/video/6eVIEPmofTw/v-deo.htmlsi=29mmHF2-8JU9ns6T

Thank you very much! Happy Thaipusam to you too! 🥰🙏
Thank you so much 🙏🥰
@@WhereisBrad glad it helped. 😊
You are blessed ❤
Thank you very much!!! 🥰
At this moment I was just around the corner waiting for the chariot to come 🥰
Cool!!! So we were very close! Then! Maybe you’re in the video!
Haha yep I totally agree! That would’ve helped a lot. Next time 😂. Well do thanks for the nice comment! 🥰🙏
Hi Brad, hope you manage to see where they poking their touge with spear...or their cheek. Some hang the hook behind their back. The step was 272steps, right up to top.
I did!!! Looks so gnarly! I wish I went to talk to one of them who did that! So intense!
Where and when did you get your hair cut? Nice
Haha I forget the name but kinda close to city center. I stayed in Ceylonz tower and google mapped places nearby with pics of clean cuts lol. I wish I knew the name!
Regardless…. Thanks 😎🙏
@@WhereisBrad Ah I see...but it looks good on you...are you still in KL? When are going back to the States?
The pot on the head is called “paal kavadi” or “theertha kavadi” .
Paal kavadi is milk .
Theertha kavadi is sanctified water .
I am Malaysian , just started to learn about Hinduism
I see! Thank you 🙏!

Your mistake was carrying the shopping bag as you walked up the stairs. The monkeys will come to check if you have food in the bag. I used to go there to climb the stairs as a cardio workout….always made sure I was empty handed and the monkeys never bothered me.
Yep, you’re so right! I’m glad I know for next time. Hopefully this can help others who have never been. Those guys are ferocious!
Hi bro welcome to Malaysia..nice video bro.. again come to Malaysia .one things you pay $5 is not pay for entrance fee..pay for-carry the milk and pray with God and take Preshatham the (plastic bag)
