I work a McDonald’s in Winston Salem and yes a lot of people order the unsweetened tea. Even the half gallon of unsweetened tea. The most popular way is to cut sweet tea with unsweetened tea. I don’t get it but it’s definitely a thing
Appalachian mountains, Outer Banks, Charlotte, Research Triangle! This state has it all! The colleges here are phenomenal too! Proud to call it my home!
I lived in "exile" in GA for 30 years. Never once did I ever say I was "From" Georgia. I am "From" NC. I'd explain that NC has the best beaches and the best mountains. I don't know what you call that chunk in the middle, but its pretty darn good, too.
You can’t mention NC Donuts without talking about Brit’s Donuts on the Carolina beach boardwalk. One year it was ranked 2nd beat individual donut shop in America
I grew up going to Carolina Beach every year at the end of July first of Aug . Britt's was a staple on my vacation . I remember not having to wait or wait long before the got so dang famous . Sitting on their bar stool chocolate milk and two doughnuts please
As a native North Carolinian, I can vouch for everything in this video. Thanks for making our state look so attractive, Mark! And if you haven't already, you've got to try NC-grown muscadine and scuppernong grapes-they taste 100 times better than any grape grown in CA!
As a at least a 7th generation North Carolinian, I can say LIES! Muscadine wine is trash! I hate it! But if you must drink it, Hinnant vineyard makes the best.
Amazing shakes, great char grilled burgers and they have a size of tea called “huge.” Don’t expect to actually drink the shakes; they are more like a blizzard or McFlurry...but better. Banana pudding is my favorite flavor; it has real banana and nilla wafers blended in.
North Carolina is a very diverse state. The mountains to the west are gorgeous. The coast is beautiful. Research triangle has a lot of museums and culture. It's a really nice state.
I live in South Carolina, which, like North Carolina, is pretty diverse with regards to landscape, but, nowhere near as big. I like the Blue Ridge Mountains, in North Carolina. I would stay away from the coast, it's just because I prefer mountains. The area around Cherokee is nice, although I don't really care too much for Cherokee itself, too touristy, my friend's family is from there, and he doesn't like it either. You have big cities too, like Charlotte. If you want, you could live in South Carolina and work in North Carolina, that might actually be a little bit cheaper, if you're moving because of a job. I will tell you though, that in North Carolina, actually in South Carolina too, come to think of it, the Piedmont is growing very quick. I technically live at the very Southern edge of the Piedmont, but not the part that's growing really quick. So you need to take the stuff into consideration, like I said I love the mountains, but unless you're in one of those touristy areas, don't expect it to be a cakewalk to get groceries. Take in a pow wow while you're there, Pembroke has some good ones, from what I hear. It's almost 3:30 in the morning, that's the best advice I'm going to give.
If you're still in the state, hit up a Cookout! Its fast food like bojangles. They have delicious cookout style food that is cheap but good quality. Their BLT is 1.50 and will rock your world. They use crushed ice instead of cubed, and they have soooo many flavors of shakes that are too thick to drink through a straw. You've gotta check it out! I reccomend the cookout style hotdog, cheddar style burger, and cajun chicken sandwich. Kiddos would love the quesadillas 👌 i love cookout can u tell lmfao😂
Calabash style fish!!!! Named after the coastal town of Calabash, NC, you will find this style of fish/shellfish throughout the state. Lightly breaded with their special recipe then deep fried. Popcorn shrimp calabash style is to die for.
North Carolina barbecue is actually divided in two halves. Both are pretty unique, but the eastern part of the state definitely has the more vinegar based sauce. They barbecue shown in this video looked more western to me. Both styles are really good but that vinegar base in the east is to die for.
Thing to add to all of this is that of you see a food related festival, go there and try it, you won’t regret it. The seafood fest is a big one and a festival is usually happening at some point. So try and find those, local volunteers and people are nice as well.
There are many wonderful places to dine in the Raleigh area from sit down restaurants like Brewery Bhavana to doughnuts at Rise. Durham and Chapel Hill to the West also have great places. You will find amazing Indian food around the Research Triangle/Morrisville (Little India) area and pretty much any ethnic food you want all around the urban areas. North Carolina has a number of different regions and even accents from the coast to the mountains. There were a lot of immigrants from different areas that settled together; English, Scots, Germans, etc. There is a lot of German influence in the northwest parts. Scots can be found around Laurinburg, but there are pockets of them in the west. There is a lot of soul food and country cookin' around too so don't forget that. Barbeque is available most places, but many people (like myself) make their own. I prefer the eastern style, but won't turn down anything else. In tourist areas like Asheville, Wilmington, or Boone, you will find good food as you will in the major urban areas like Raleigh and Charlotte. In the more rural areas, you will find a lot of country food that you would find in other states. The craft beer movement in North Carolina is amazing. Asheville has a lot, but there are small breweries and brewpubs everywhere that are worth a visit. Y'all come on down.
should be what outsiders like to eat in N.C-N.C. residents 1-BBQ (eastern) 2-collards 3-Steaks on the grill (ribeye) 4-Fried Chicken 5-Fried Bologna --damn I am getting hungry--
I lived in eastern N.C. for three years (Thanks Uncle Sam!) and there’s exactly one restaurant I miss. Smithfield’s chicken lives in my dreams. I’m going to take a trip back at some point just for the chicken.
Man I love their food. They are the best in NC. It's just too bad they're aren't any chains on the west. I live on the west now. But grew up on the east. So I know where a whole lot of good places are & most of them are almost never mentioned or featured in any videos.
If you're at a NC local BBQ place, don't overlook the Carolina-style hamburgers. These are prepared with mustard, chili, onions, and cole slaw (preferably the red BBQ slaw) and take burgers to a whole different level.
Definitely visit CookOut! It's a chain restaurant that started in NC and has expanded along the east coast. They are famous for their "CookOut Trays" and over 40+ milkshake flavors. Plus they offer Cheerwine (which Mark talked about) and Sundrop, which are by far the two most popular soft drinks in the state. You won't be disappointed!!
Yes, we love our sweet tea!😁 You will find hot boil peanuts not only for sale on the side of the road but in gas stations too!!😉 I'm from coastal Wilmington, NC and y'all are welcome here anytime💛💙
Tammie Renee yesssssss Tell him! With some moist cornbread( even better with honey butter). The sides are endless though. Black eyed peas, potato salad, homemade BAKED Mac and cheese, deviled eggs, Hopin John, Succotash, fried okra, hell even mustard greens! Chicken and Dumplings are fire too! Soooo many good eats. Casey’s in Wilmington has a good amount on their buffet. But the absolute best is homemade food from the original locals. Some restaurants are amazing but not all are created equal. I’m the biggest foodie ever and a NC native. And I appreciated this video. Please continue to come back and dive into the yummy deliciousness Mark! Also, if you like hot sauce, there’s a hot sauce store in Wilmington and Brits Donuts on Carolina Beach. And yes the seafood dishes really ARE endless. Ok, I think I’m done for now lol
The best donuts in Nc is "Bakers Dozen" ! Oh my Gawd, they bake them fresh each day and they are not too sweet they are just right...to die for. Coming to Raleigh, gotta try them!
Spooky timing there - this video popped up in my Inbox when I woke up to set off for the drive to Asheville today! Definitely checking out the beer, BBQ and donuts, as well as Biltmore.
Also try Sundrop..it is a lemon lime drink found primarily in the Piedmont. Now..we do have the best BBQ on the planet. But we have two types. One is a thicker molasses and tomato based that you find all over. But the best kind, which is the vinegar based, is found mainly again in the Piedmont (middle) of the state. And the best BBQ comes from Lexington..about an hour outside of Charlotte. They serve their BBQ with red slaw which is not mayo based and to die for. And each October they have the Lexington BBQ festival. Also try a pimento cheese sandwich. I'm from the south and not a fan but lots of people enjoy it. And we are becoming well known for our wine. We have wineries all over the state and most of our wine is made from scuppernong grapes.
Definitely Bojangles! Had them last night...omg their biscuits and seasoned fries and supreme tenders Oh My!!!! Soo good! Mooresville, NC is fill of great eateries!! La patisserie is to DIE for!!! Famous Toastery, BOMB! So many other places I cant name them all.
If you're ever in a part of the state that has a Biscuitville, definitely have a quick breakfast there! They handmake fresh biscuits all day, in full view of customers.
When your in St pauls NC visit tarpackers, best place to go to as well as fuller's in Fayetteville, pembroke, and lumberton (original location might still be closed from hurricane damage)
So for the bbq there are two styles in NC: Lexington and eastern. Eastern style is vinegar and pepper based with no tomato used in the sauce. Eastern style also uses the whole Hog. Lexington style uses tomato, vinegar and red pepper flakes in its base.
Seafood is an underrated part of North Carolina cuisine in general: coastal seafood is obviously pervasive, but you'll be just as satisfied going to one of the southern Piedmont's ubiquitous "fish camps", seafood restaurants that have been 'country-fied' so to speak. Generous portions of fish, calabash shrimp, deviled crab, all great. When you're in the High Country (northwestern part of the state), two things: homemade apple cider and cheese curds from the Ashe County cheese store. You'll thank me later.
Ashevillian here. The best BBQ place in Asheville, in my opinion is Moes Barbeque. They got all the good stuff, pulled pork, ribs, and even a swordfish sandwich thats real good. Order anything off the menu and you'll be happy. And of course they've got all the local beers on tap.
You did a great job on the video, but you only scratched the surface! So much more to discover in North Carolina... But you still did an awesome video! I only wish you had time to read these awesome comments by the great people who have just watched this video! Sweet Tea, Barbeque, and Muscadine grapes! COOKOUT! How could you miss that one! Eating at the COOKOUT is like going back in time for some good ole North Carolina hamburgers and hotdogs. The kind you can't find anymore...
If ever in the Washington, NC area.... DEFINITELY check out Bill's Hot Dogs on Gladden Street. Amazing! I've lived in North Carolina my whole life and had never heard of it..... until my husband introduced me to them a couple years ago. I am not a big hot dog fan, but I could eat these everyday!
One place to visit that's nice is Hickory. I recommend eating at the Olde Hickory Tap Room. Some of the best food I've ever had anywhere as well as my favorite beer of all time, the Ruby Lager. I couldn't recommend these things enough really. If you go then you won't regret it.
Used to live in NC, and what I miss the most is the barbeque at General McArthur's near Laurinburg. Amazing stuff! And they also have lots of fried cornbread and fatback on the buffet. Sigh. Now I'm homesick. 😢
My personal recommendations... OBX: check out Kill Devil Grill in Kill Devil Hills. Fried Green Tomatoes: Storie Street Grill in Blowing Rock. Pizza: Buffalo Cove Mercantile Company and Cafe in Lenoir. Best pizza I've ever had, and this is coming from a native New Yorker. Seafood: Stick to the coastal regions. Living in the Appalachian foothills, I've found that good fish is hard to find this far inland. As for the sweet tea, be cautious. Many places make it way too sweet, so asking for half sweet half unsweet is usually the way to go.
You forgot the most important food item in North Carolina... The shrimp burger❤️❤️❤️. There's also a place in south port that has a killer pimento cheese dog 🥰
I have literally got into fights with people about NC bbq we have the best hands down😋and duck donuts are the best.....proud North Carolina girl here born and raised love my state❤😊love the people
We have two different styles of NC BBQ; Eastern BBQ (Vinegar based sauce) and Lexington BBQ (Tomato based sauce). Both are pork and both are really good! Try both!
Kentucky Fried Chicken, Libby Hill Seafood, and Mayflower are some more good ones here in Greensboro. ;) Stamey's Barbecue, also great! I like the sliced pork better. Vinegar slaw here.
My mother is from Washington NC and she allwas made use cheese biscuits with real sharp sharp cheader cheese.and a scoop of cool appiebutter 2 dip your Biscuits in
Best BBQ in NC. Log Cabin, Albemarle NC. Also, hands down, best hot dogs and hamburgers. You can wet them down with the BBQ sauce and its heaven. You can also buy the Sauce and red slaw. Ummm, already hungry.
Most NC thing he said "they have the unsweet tea but I don't know why, no one drinks it"
facts.
@Beachcomber
I don't drink tea at all
I work a McDonald’s in Winston Salem and yes a lot of people order the unsweetened tea. Even the half gallon of unsweetened tea. The most popular way is to cut sweet tea with unsweetened tea. I don’t get it but it’s definitely a thing
That’s the truth, In our restaurant we refill the sweet tea every 40-60 minutes unlike the unsweet which we refill every 3-4 hours.
Hmm I figured the most NC thing said I just bought a house and I’m from New York. Or, I just moved here from California.
Some like myself have diabetes and can not have sugar so we can not have regular tea.
We have to get unsweet tea and use artificial sweeteners.
Seems like most of the people watching this are from NC

Exactly!
Opening weekend of 2019 saw about a 2 hour wait....and a line all the way down the boardwalk. The donuts at Britt's are worth it.

Yes! Lexington style (chopped) is the best! In Charlotte they seem to have more of the pulled.
Western style is known for its tomato based ("sweet") sauce. Lexington is supposedly where the split begins geographically.
The Eastern style is king. Stay away from Lexington. Good video.
Morgan W Eastern where bc in the center of Raleigh we do “Smithfield’s” or we could make our own!

Please y’all, go to Smithfield’s Chicken & BBQ!!!! It’s a must place to go for good bbq fooood omgggg
Imani Brooks yes!!!!
Love Britts Doughnuts at Carolina Beach and Melvin's Hamburgers in Elizabeth Town
Used to live in NC, and what I miss the most is the barbeque at General McArthur's near Laurinburg. Amazing stuff! And they also have lots of fried cornbread and fatback on the buffet. Sigh. Now I'm homesick. 😢
I would like to visit America
You've got to go to Carolina Beach and try Britt's Donuts served hot. To me the best. They're light and airy and oh so sweet.
I realized Banana pudding was an nc thing when I was trying to explain it to my friend from Colorado

Kentucky Fried Chicken, Libby Hill Seafood, and Mayflower are some more good ones here in Greensboro. ;) Stamey's Barbecue, also great! I like the sliced pork better. Vinegar slaw here.

Best BBQ in NC. Log Cabin, Albemarle NC. Also, hands down, best hot dogs and hamburgers. You can wet them down with the BBQ sauce and its heaven. You can also buy the Sauce and red slaw. Ummm, already hungry.
Duck donuts are the bomb. Try the maple bacon donut. These are a cake donut.
You forgot the Hunters Livermush it's the best thing ever.
As a native North Carolinan I can confirm ALL of this is true
