Incredible song. Incredible times. If UA-cam, Apple Music, and other social media platforms existed back then, this song, this group and many many others like them would have got the wide recognition that they deserve. Today, the platforms exist but the talent doesn’t. So sad. Thanks for posting.
Replay. No worm here; no worm; no worm. Replay. Replay. What? Eh? My mind has a mind of its own … replay… My foot’s not tapping, your’s is. Full strum air guitar 4x. Did that sculpture move? Sure it did. ❤😂❤😂❤
Such a beautiful song. I saw this band twice in the eighties. The first time was at Perkins Palace on September 9, 1982. The headliner was Gang Of Four. The opening act was REM. From humble beginnings do the great bands rise. Second time was a year later at the Greek Theater on August 10, 1983. They were the opening act for Sparks. Translator were touring in support of the album with this song on it. To hear this song performed live was such a moving experience. I am able to pinpoint the dates because I have a ticket stub collection that numbers just over 1350 concerts I have seen since 1974.
These gents opened for David Bowie on 1983's Serious Moonlight Tour - at least the show I saw at Oakland Stadium's Day On The Green on September 17, 1983 - my very first concert, ever. The other act was The Tubes - just can't recall who went on first. Interesting note: twenty-two years later (2005), I would get to perform the Star Spangled Banner at a sold-out Raiders-Cowboys football game there, standing pretty much on the same turf location where I'd stood as the 17 year-old kid!
Man, thanks for sharing this obscure little jewel. I'd never seen the video. This is one of those all-time classics I could never get enough of but which never seemed to get the recognition or airplay it obviously deserves. Great melody line, even better lyrics, I can listen to this all day & all night & never get tired of it. Thanks for sharing Brother! Peace
In Detroit in the early 80's , DJ Doug Podell had a show called The Beat where he played current music videos. He threw this in there and made me aware. Bought the album. Still have it. The whole record is awesome.
Anyone know if they ever got any MTV airplay? I first remembered them on local college radio. What a great voice; such intelligent lyrics; well-crafted songs that really rock. They had it all, really did - I'm guessing except record sales? Such a pity. They should have been big stars. But the music holds up, can still be tremendously enjoyed. That's saying something!
must have been 1981....., i actually got to go backstage at the I-Beam in SF after the show. what a dorky 21year old i was...backstage!....all i could think of to say was "thank you for your music" LOL
It got some MTV play, not as much as "Everywhere that I'm Not" but they played it..Loved these guys..Both albums I have had a lot of good songs on them. They had two different lead vocalists ala "The Cars".
Keep the great music coming from the first cord to the last it takes me right back to good place in time and for that I sincerely appreciate it and thank you
I heard this on World Café, and I thought, "Holy crap, these people really have the eighties totally down! Who is this? Translator? I remember the name but I don't remember the music...I can't tell you how happy I am to hear this.
One of my faves from the 80's too (along with Roxy Music's More Than This. Too bad this great LA band never had the chance they surely deserved. Well, thanks to UA-cam they're back! (They need a hot new band somewhere to cover this and bring it back.)
Compared to "You're Everywhere that I'm Not" this song got hardly any airplay so I don't remember it. But I like the end of the vid where his girl drives up to the men of the cloth and shows them his pic and, as the liars they are, they shake their head with a "nope". And this was when I was Christian!!
Only released as a single commercially in the Netherlands. US copies were limited to promotional 12-inch singles. Strange that they made a video without benefit of a 45 RPM single in 1983.
Did they release subsequent albums after 1983? Are they all alive and doing well now in 2015? Lessor known 1980s artists have a mystique to me in that I wonder where they are now and what kind of things happened in their lives (both good and bad) since they had these great songs out.
Please stop by - I manage this page, am regular contact with the band & constantly seeking memorabilia & fan participation for the page. Thanks! facebook.com/TranslatorFriends/
oh I should say yes about albums. Big Green Lawn was released in 2012. Omnivore put out a compilation of unreleased demos in 2015 & all band members still play together when possible as well as in other projects seperately. Thanks for asking!
You might be interested to hear they are regrouping at the end of April for some very rare shows. If you're in Calif., they are playing in San Francisco the 26th & LA the 28th & 29th. Cheers!
@dukeofsnatch the upside about vevo is you get high quality videos direct from the music label. Most of my old 80's video tapes are disintegrating and the recordings weren't very good in the first place.
Really killer power pop song. Video must have been done by whom ever did so many of the 80’s MTV videos Way better than their “Everywhere that I’m not” video Even though I love that song
Greetings dampen damp! Translator is alive & well & have a compilation of rare tracks being released 3/31/15 by Omnivore Recordings. they are playing live shows in May 2015. for information re: Translator, please follow them on Twitter @TranslatorFans or on Facebook at Friends & Fans of Translator

Also, that brilliantly menacing rhythm guitar seems to have been adapted from "Let Her Dance" by the Bobby Fuller Four, which was covered by Phil Seymore and Marshal Crenshaw in the '80s.
well sellout maybe, but it is a business. there's loads of illegal/copyrighted stuff on youtube haha be glad no one shut down this site cause of that....
So, Steve B. is driving all over (presumably) northern California looking for Dana Plato? Couldn't he do a little better and look for Justine Bateman? :-D
One of the most "beautiful" new wave songs ever composed !!!
Beautiful 40 years later !!!!!!!!!!!
This is the first song I ever requested on a radio station. I recall being so excited when they actually played it.
Lucky ducky

"'I'm a restless shadow on a street of stone." Yep, great lyric.

I always loved this song.........actually opened up for them in a pizza joint in Sebastopol, Ca. about 3 lifetimes ago.............
Best song of the 80s in my opinion.
😆 🤣 😂 😹
Sure.
It's good but nowhere near that good

WOW !!! You have had a God given gifted life to experience this much music from the Heavens !!!
Outstanding!
Added, for how fallen this country has become, I want to go back to these "precious" times :(:(:(
OMG I so remember this song . . . it's a song that made you feel glad that you were young and alive and living in L.A.!
Perfect 80s guitar pop. The band deserved a way better fate, as did other under-rated 415 bands like Romeo Void and Red Rockers

Special and unique song! I love this song. One of my favorites during the 80s. They didn't get the recognition that they deserved, so true.
My 1980's jam. I never get tired of hearing this song.
I could watch and enjoy this every day. The joy of music and eighties videos. Thanks Translator.

During my morning run this gem shuffled in. I forget how amazing this song is. I miss the 80s and tunes like this.
One of my go-to pick-me-up numbers
I remember my first time driving through central California and seeing a landscape that looked just like the one he was driving through.
Brilliant song. Brilliant band. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
Have their first 3 albums, on vinyl!!! Always loved Unalone & Come With Me. Saw them many times in the 80s in SF once a free show in Golden Gate Park
I remember hearing this as a kid on KQAK FM 99 in SF. I still have this record '
Same here but in Detroit.
The road scenes were filmed in eastern Alameda County CA. I've ridden these roads more than a few times
Translator kicks ass! They need to do a show in San Diego!
They need to do a show here in Oahu...!

yes, received MTV airplay for at least 3 or 4 songs. the music definitely holds up to this day!
@@patriciarodriguez6028 I didn't get cable. I saw Translator on Night Music (including live) and California Music Channel.
This song did. Everywhere that I'm Not, No Time Like Now, Another American Night and Come with Me definitely did.
Straight up new wave the whole feel &spirit of this masterpiece.

Leslie, that's so cool. And, you're welcome! I hope we thanked you at the time!
I beam still around? Lived in Albany, never got around to going to the I-beam, this was mid eighties
Wow. It has been over 3 decades since I've heard this song. Thanks for posting.
This was one of my fave songs when I was first getting into college radio and alternative music in the early 80's. Still love it.
Random mixes brought me here...I don't remember them from the time. Sound is VERY reminiscent of The Lucy Show from a similar time though
Just looked them up because of your comment. They are good thanks 😊 like 'new message'
It got some MTV play, not as much as "Everywhere that I'm Not" but they played it..Loved these guys..Both albums I have had a lot of good songs on them. They had two different lead vocalists ala "The Cars".

originated out of LA in the late 70s but I believe they claim San Francisco as the home of Translator since that is where they truly became successful
Very good
Great song & Video, saw this when mtv actually showed music vids
thank you for this great band & song, we owe you one !!!
Great one.
This is wonderful!
Great timeless song
What great band and they sure made some great songs. Hard to believe, but I miss the 80's in some ways
Well Gravity was a big hit in the Philippines in the 80's.
Wonderful song!!! I LOVE THIS BAND1
First time seeing video had their tape on heavy rotation
Good times

This was a band that I heard of but went un-noticed by me in the 80s, too bad. It's awesome!
Great stuff! I wish I could find "Bedtime for Ronald" by the B-sides (1980)
fabulon groupe , comme on en fait hélas plus !
Some of the vocal melodies remind me of Oingo Boingo.

They deserved better. Bummer.

Also, that brilliantly menacing rhythm guitar seems to have been adapted from "Let Her Dance" by the Bobby Fuller Four, which was covered by Phil Seymore and Marshal Crenshaw in the '80s.
I'm pretty sure Translator was first but San Francisco had a very tight music scene back then. I think it's safe to say everyone influenced everyone
