I was 20 years old when this came out. I still love the song, but at 72 I look at the song differently.

Neil explains the old man is the manager of the farm he bought in California. Another Neil Young song that will break your heart is "Man Needs a Maid" - listen to the studio version first. It is based on a relationship he was in with an actress who dumped him.
