Right, I was watching anime and this was recommended lol. Next week we look at Modesto historic taco trucks and the never ending war on which is the best one
All the years I lived in Modesto I never looked up the history and also I have some of those bricks when that building had gotten torn down, and my brother is resting in Acacia cemetery ty for the history lesson 🙂
My mother is buried there and other family members I was born and raised in ModestoI'm a Modesto native which is kind of rare these days since most people commute here and come from out of town I was born and raised in this town
My grand dad lost his arm in a farming accident. Must be a terrifying experience. I love the episodes featuring cemeteries.....a lot of history and for the most part beautifully landscaped. Top notch video and I appreciate this excellent channel!!!
Thanks again for your nice compliment! My grandfather was picking fruit on one of those fruit ladders when it gave way and he came crashing to the ground and shattered his leg bone to where it was sticking out of his skin and bone marrow was outside of his pants. I cringe to think about what he went through.
I love how you really put the time and effort in giving us a history lesson. I wish more reporters were like you and just gave us the facts. I've been watching your old videos for awhile now and I can't get enough of our local history.
Thanks Jeff, I’ve lived in Modesto since I was three years old, I am now 58. I used to ride my bike with my buddies to the graveyard at night and I remember that headstone that stated” I told you I was sick”… LOL those facts about Mr. McHenry or should I say Brewster I had never heard before. Interesting… I was one of the fortunate few who used to cruise McHenry back in the day. Graduated from Downey high. Thanks again Jeff, you did a great job with the history lesson.
When it's finally something positive to come out to Modesto... Loved this video! Was in the recommended section and glad it was. I can't wait to watch more of your videos!!
Your videos are so well researched and presented, they are a pleasure to watch. You make the seemingly boring subject of history to some, very interesting viewing for all.
This was really awesome to watch. I was raised in Modesto and my grandpa is buried in this cemetery, in front of the little building in the background where the flag is. My mom was a professional seamstress and though I'm not sure how she met the woman that was living in that little building, she began sewing for her when I was a little girl. I'm thinking this was a caretaker. On one occasion the woman asked my mom is she would like to go in the room where they kept coffins, and try one out. I believe that was the last my mom sewed any clothes for her lol I think she was just a very friendly woman. There's a lot of history there. I really enjoy your videos!!
Jeff, You missed the grave of Joseph Sr and Assunta Gallo, parents of Ernest and Julio Gallo, they're buried in the Catholic section. Joe Sr shot and killed Assunta because he believed that she was involved with another man, interesting story..
My aunt, Elva Lucia Villafan sadly passed, and now rests in the Catholic section of the cemetery. She was a Catholic sister living based at the Stanislaus parish, any if you want to talk trash about Nuns, now's the time. 😞
Love your video! I was born and raised in Modesto and heard a lot of stories from my dad. One in particular was about a shooting that took place at a burger joint called "Burgess Drive-In". Identified as "Mel's" in the movie "American Graffiti".
I've lived in Calif. all of my life and never been to Modesto. Your videos make it look so interesting. I definitely have to visit. Thanks for another interesting and educational episode, Jeff!
You've never been up toward the center of your Golden State? Modesto is about 90 miles east of San Francisco and 90 miles southeast of Sacramento ... the center of it all! Actually you wouldn't find it all that interesting! LOL. But thanks, Steve, for the compliment once again! I appreciate you, of all popular UA-camrs, watching my videos!
Ive lived in Cali. You are so right! Jeff is more outgoing and I'm more introverted, a quiet observer. Thank you for sharing History Hunters with others, for watching and your support. Glad you are enjoying.
Very interesting video, thank you for doing one on the Modesto area. It's actually a quite haunted cemetery, as are Wood Colony, Burwood and Lakewood Cemeteries among some others in the 209 and the old hospital across the street from Acacia is too.
Wow that was just really a surprise it just popped up on my feed on UA-cam to hear about so much history out of Modesto going back to the 1800s I used to walk my dog there so often and I have seen all the graves that you spoke of now I got to go back and take along this video as I look at each one you spoke of thank you for digging into all the history of our cemetery here in Modesto! I’ve shared this with several people.
As a Modesto resident who grew up in Waterford I found this very enthralling and informative. Subscribing as I write this. Thank you Jeff for taking the time to do what you do. Bravo!
WOW! I have lived here my whole life with a lot of family buried in this cemetery yet, I never knew any of this. Thank you for sharing this! It was so interesting. Now I will have to take a stroll and see this for myself.
Pat Sinner Dickey me too I just subscribed! Thank you sir for taking the time to make these videos. Is the long very busy McHenry road named after the army deserter?
Hi Jeff. Another fine informative video. Please keep adding more well told stories.I believe I've just about completed your playlist. Subed last weekend. Great job!

Thanks again for another informative video! I am disabled and cannot get around much. With your videos,it's like I am there with you! I very much appreciate you and your fine work!
Since daily I work the central Valley From Sacramento to Madera and all points in between really interesting to know the many towns named after these early famous folks. My travels include the bay delta area and the gold country foothills but not often pass Yuba City or Sonora or Mariposa. So it seems you have many videos for us to enjoy learning a bit of local past history. Thank you both for that,
Absolutely LOVE your channel, so glad I found it! One of our favorite past times is going to ghost towns & old cemeteries. Thanks for the awesome videos! I'm in Nebraska, can you recommend any good places to visit here? Thank you so much..... : )
Welcome Diana! Glad you found us! It’s been a long time since I’ve been in Nebraska. I have not researched places there but any old cemeteries would be a place to start. Do you know about findagrave.com?
Again Jeff outstanding job on all the back stories and inner twining of People!! I know you have covered Wyatt Earps grave and it’s on my bucket list!! I deliver to the 2 Home Depot’s there in Colma from time to time but it’s always the middle of the night.. another 2 thumbs up!
Hi James. It's nice to see you enjoying so many of our videos. But I do have to correct you ... we have not been to Wyatt Earp's grave yet. It's our our list though.
Very interesting to hear local history. My grandfather was a tile and marble contractor in Motown in the late 1940's and my dad as well. Growing up there my family knew the local building contractors. A tidbit of history also is that many of the local older streets are not just named for status but for local contractors and their families, many of the sub contractors as well including my grandfather Coston Trent and the streets connect so the signs say Coston on one and Trent the other.
Good morning Jeff. This was a very informative and interesting video. Thank you so much for sharing this article about our local history. My wife's paternal grandparents are interned there. They migrated to Modesto during the Depression. Sad to say but, in the 40 years I've been here, I've never taken the opportunity to visit this old cemetery and visit my wife's grandparents graves. My wife and I are both disabled and have a hard time getting around. Are the paths/trails easy to navigate? Again, thank you so much for sharing this history. Stan
There are roads throughout the cemetery for easy walking but some of the old roads have been filled with graves. So yes you can see a lot of graves near the roads if you can't walk on the grassy areas and over concrete curbs! Thanks for watching!
Good thing you didn’t have a car crash into the brick wall while you were there. Cars come around that corner real fast and crash into that wall at the corner scenic cemetery taking out the sign and wall. I’ve lived in Modesto since 2000 and my husband was born and raised here but I never knew the history of Modesto. I loved the video you made. It was very interesting and informative.
I don't get it either. If you don't like a video or a channel, move on, right? Don't squash the work of somebody who labors over them for hours. Thanks for your support!

Jeff, this is Andrew Dillon. I found your channel randomly and I have to say, WOW. Your content is just great, your editing is superb, your presentation is stellar and your research is awesome. As i randomly stumbled on your channel, my first episode is your latest but I will be starting from the beginning. You have a very huell howser feel without his silly voice. I will be telling my parents about this and thanks again for great california historical content, I hope your channel blows up with subscriptions and likes.
Hey Andrew, glad you found me. I've been on for over three years now. The channel was at 700 subscribers in November and is now over 15,000 just seven months later so it's going well. Thanks for your compliments! Hope your life is going well. Your parents kind of drifted away and I miss them. Tell them hi for me!
Wow 700 to 15k is nothing to sneeze at in such a short time, I hope you get even bigger. The subject matter is super interesting and not well known even to Californians and deserves to be celebrated. Keep on producing great content I will be telling everyone I know.
Thank you for your continued interesting sharing of stories and facts found in cemeteries. I really enjoy it all. There was ‘another’ shoot-out at the O.K. Coral in Tombstone, Az. If you ever find yourself back out that way pop over to the court house and look into it. It’s a very interesting story. Keep up the good work.
I have been to Tombstone before (1997) but it was before I established this channel! Hope to get back there one day! Thanks for watching and leaving the nice comment!
Hey, Jeff! Glad I found this channel. Not sure if you remember me. I’m Brian McClimans and I used to work at the Manteca Bulletin. UA-cam recommended this video to me. Started watching and was like that guy looks familiar. Then, I saw your name at the end. Subscribed to the channel, because I enjoy watching stuff like this and general history videos overall.
Hi Brian. I guess it's been a long time, huh? Welcome aboard! Thanks for subscribing! I'm having fun doing this as a hobby. Who knows where it will lead? I was at 750 subscribers in November and now past 13,000. Always looking for new ideas ahead of time!
This is so very interesting, the history and events you uncover is fascinating, and I live in Ohio, many miles away. What you discovered on this video proves that we today aren't much different than those of yesteryear. Thanks Jeff, and keep on discovering.
It is very cool to learn about our people of the past. I recognized many names you mentioned, as the names of local towns, streets, monuments, buildings and schools. But the history of such, I was unaware. Thank you! I was raised in Atwater, only 30 miles south of Modesto. We had some rather interesting stories growing up, many to do with the Bloss family. We have a museum, The Bloss Home, and Bloss Hospital. You might be interested in researching their story and the reason they built the hospital. It is worthwhile. Blessings!
Thanks for all your hard work. Death is part of life. And is a part of history. Going to see the graves of people who Iived. There is a grave of a woman in Mounds Illinois that no one visit. Mary and I put flowers on her graves when we visit . I want her to know that someone cares. Keep up the great videos. They do make a difference .
Thank you for the video. I am the great granddaughter of Hiram D. Hughson and the great great granddaughter of Hiram and Luella Hughson. You provided accurate history of our family. God bless you.

Oh my gosh I was mesmerized by this I really love history and this is so cool I live locally now and it’s amazing how many stories that we’ve read about come from the central valley that everything comes from New York this is so neat I am honored that you do something like this thank you very very much
@@jbenziggy I will be looking forward to this and i have watched this several times and we were just discussing this in our car tonight lol thank you so much.
I was born and raised in Modesto although I have not lived there for many years now. As a long time historical researcher, I watched Jeff's videos with interest. I have numerous ancestors buried in both the Acacia, Citizens, and Pioneer Cemeteries. These include members of the Coffees, Mattesons, and Howell families. All three of these family groups were instrumental in the early days of Modesto. The Howells came to Modesto via a wagon train from Missouri in 1864. and are featured in an old publication "Stanislaus Steppingstones." Stockard Coffee also arrived via a wagon train. The Mattesons came out from Wisconsin via the Panama route at a similar time, All of these families had large farms and businesses in Modesto's early days. Their stories, while not sensational, also make for interesting reading.
When your hometown is recommended on UA-cam 😂 didn’t expect that.

They wanted to name the town after him but he "was too modest" so they named it Modesto. He was probably trying to avoid detection.

I appreciate that, Gennie! Any relation to Thomas? LOL
That was a real nice video thank you friend for the history
Very interesting and entertaining video. Thank you.
Thank you very much watching!
Very interesting video thank you for sharing
Thank you for your continued interesting sharing of stories and facts found in cemeteries. I really enjoy it all. There was ‘another’ shoot-out at the O.K. Coral in Tombstone, Az. If you ever find yourself back out that way pop over to the court house and look into it. It’s a very interesting story. Keep up the good work.
I have been to Tombstone before (1997) but it was before I established this channel! Hope to get back there one day! Thanks for watching and leaving the nice comment!
Great video! Stanislaus and Modesto's history is great.

Thank you for the interesting information about our past
This is so very interesting, the history and events you uncover is fascinating, and I live in Ohio, many miles away. What you discovered on this video proves that we today aren't much different than those of yesteryear. Thanks Jeff, and keep on discovering.
Thank you, Richard! I worry sometimes that a video I do far from a viewer may not interest that viewer. I am glad that you found this one interesting!
Isn't there a McHenry Avenue in Modesto? Or am I mistaken?
Yes there is a McHenry Avenue in Modesto! Thanks for watching! Merry Christmas!
Very informative about my hometown. Thank you!

Great video, well researched.
Awesome video! I learned a town about Modesto and the local area I've never known before. Super interesting!
Thank you very much!
Very fascinating! Subscribed!!😊
Welcome aboard! Thank you!
Blessings!
Blessings back to you! did you see my Livingston video?
@@jbenziggy No! I did not. What am I missing? I'm going to find it right now! I'm sure, things I have not known before. Haha I'll let you know ; )
Just subscribed, I’m on your third video and I’m hooked. Thank you for all this knowledge! By the way you look like Tim Daly😀
Ha ha. I just had to look him up. Didn’t know he was. I can see the resemblance. Thanks for joining our channel, Pat!
Cool history! Great video! God blessing on you
Making Self Quarantine an easy with these great videos, Thanks
Thanks for all your hard work. Death is part of life. And is a part of history. Going to see the graves of people who Iived. There is a grave of a woman in Mounds Illinois that no one visit. Mary and I put flowers on her graves when we visit . I want her to know that someone cares. Keep up the great videos. They do make a difference .
Never thought Modesto would ever be recommended to me. My dad lives in Patterson lol
Another great history lesson! Love looking at the old tombstones.
Again, thank you!
New subscriber here! I've lived in Modesto for over 25 years, and I had no idea McHenry was a fraud! Great video! Thanks so much for this!

Thank you for the video. I am the great granddaughter of Hiram D. Hughson and the great great granddaughter of Hiram and Luella Hughson. You provided accurate history of our family. God bless you.
I'm glad I got it right. Thanks! I worried about the family reacting to my mention of the lawsuit after your great-grandfather passed away. LOL
@@jbenziggy here is a message from my Mom Victoria Carlson
Hiram and Luella Hughson were my Great Grandparents. As a little girl Luella was still alive and I was fortunate to get to know her. The information you gave was correct. I have always wanted a copy of the mule team pulling the thresher. Where can I get a copy?
Good job dad! Love how passionate you are about your history!
Thank you sweet daughter! This video really took off!!!
A lot of history in those few acres
Thak you for bringing that to us
You are very right! More history than I can get to! Thanks for watching!
Oh my gosh I was mesmerized by this I really love history and this is so cool I live locally now and it’s amazing how many stories that we’ve read about come from the central valley that everything comes from New York this is so neat I am honored that you do something like this thank you very very much
Thanks, James. I am happy you eagerly watched this! I will have another Modesto cemetery video coming up in about two weeks.
@@jbenziggy I will be looking forward to this and i have watched this several times and we were just discussing this in our car tonight lol thank you so much.
cool video. My grandparents are buried there and i go visit sometimes. Always put a Santa Cruz sticker on my Grandpas grave.
Thank you for the lesson.
Thank you Nikki!
