You know I'm loving all these Central Valley/Foothills' pieces! Hearing the history of the area I love and grew up in is very comforting to me. Keep them coming!! LOL
Enjoyed watching. We own what was originally the Milton store. The area has a lot of history. I was told the 1st stage black bart robbed (and the last) was the Milton stage. I like to imagine that he stopped by the store....
Me and my friend parked at the Milton Cemetery to do a 20 mile e-bike ride around Salt Springs Reservoir. When we got back we explored the cemetery. When I got home I searched the Milton Cemetery on the internet and I came across this video of yours. I’m am fascinated by history and have been following your You Tube channel ever since. Thank you so much for posting these.
I’m glad you throw in a lot of the railroad history. My grandpa on mom’s side was a railroad engineer for Southern Pacific from about 1920-1960. He worked up and down California I believe and through the Bay Area. Even thru my hometown of Fremont. Said it was all orchards back then, our house was built in an old walnut orchard in 1957, moved there in 1977. If you know where Irvington Memorial Cemetery is, that’s a block from where I grew up in Irvington, CA
Another great narration and production of this show by you, Jeff and Sarah. I really enjoy your History Hunters shows and look forward in watching old and new content of your shows. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for this video. I am a descendent of Abraham Wise Rhodes. In 2004, my brothers and I took my grandfather Charles Beam Rhodes out to Milton and he us told when he was a little boy he used to help the "men" turn the locomotive around. I have a photo of my grandfather sittting with many other childen on the steps to the Milton School House. I even have his small black board writing tablet. Great memories. Thank you.
What an incredible legacy that you come from! Thanks for sharing! I’d love to see a copy of the photo of the schoolhouse if you are able to scan and send it! I’m at j.benziger@sbcglobal.net
All my life I've lived in homes near either hwy 99 or I5, or both (Mid-town Sac). Central Valley, California. Always within two hours of both the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Nevada foothills. These videos display such a wealth of knowledge of this area.
Recently subscribed, after watching your Back to The Future pt.3 location vlog in nearby Tuolumne Co.. Have lived near Murphys, for close to 40 years. Leaving the railroad @ Milton, those on the way to the Big Trees often stayed @ the Historic Murphys Hotel, where I worked for a few years... Known originally as the Sperry & Perry Hotel..... Charles Boles, Bowles.... Checked in there as Charles Bolton, and has a door named after him.... Yep , "Black Bart". Looking forward to new episodes here in Calaveras County
I remember when the school house still stood and the bell was still in its little bell tower. Just a note, when the Masonic Lodge burnt, all kind of historical photos and papers were lost. I picked up some square nails from the rubble. An arsonist burned it, I believe. Enjoy your videos, they are pretty accurate with the history.
Another great episode. I would love to see the findings of any research you do to determine if the Donner burried in the cemetery is connected to the Donner party.

A Masonic brother of mine introduced your channel to me, and I love it: great work. To answer one of your questions that I did not see answered by someone else, Keystone Masonic Lodge no.161 (while it may have been used as an Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hall, it was a registered Masonic lodge with the Grand Lodge of California) burned to the ground on January 23, 2016, likely due to arson. In the Modesto Masons Facebook page photos, there are a few pictures of what the lodge looked like inside. I was fortunate to attend two Masonic meetings there before it returned to the dust. I hope this helps.
THANK YOU !! You helped me and my family find an ancestor, Lucinda Blagg !! she is my 3rd times great aunt. Another great video Jeff! I really enjoy the videos about the wild west characters, like Black Bart. Bart spent sometime way up here in Siskiyou county- robbing stage coach. The drone video gives a great perspective of the surrounding area, keep up the great work!

Lived in rancho calaveras for over 30 years prior to that lived up in pine grove. Sad to see the old masonic hall gone. Miss the area very much I just miss california. Enjoy your videos.
Jeff, I visit this cemetery in the small town of El Dorado near Placerville often, love it. It’s very historical home of many pioneers. Many of the stones date back to gold rush days. It’s not the Placerville cemetery, but it’s actually called El Dorado Cemetery. It’s right next to an active church too. I’m usually the only one there, God, I need to go back, it’s been over a year now. 20 mins away from me..
Bravo ! Jeff, thank you , thank you for finally getting the time to get the video of Milton. I read in a Calaveras history publication that at one time Milton had the highest population in the county due to the railroad from Peters, CA coming. Hard to realize that based on what is left standing. I bet it was a real bustling community with the railroad and freight wagons etc.
@@jbenziggy Keep them coming Jeff. I am a big fan of your channel and refer many to it. BTW you referred to the old Masonic Lodge as Odd Fellows a couple of times. That lodge was known as a "Moonlight Lodge" as it only held meetings during a full moon. That way people could travel to it with some light at night.
There is so much of that pristine landscape still left here in California! But with the nearest store at least a half-hour away, I don't know if I could live that far out! Thanks, John, for watching!

Just found your channel, and subscribed. Hopefully someday you can come to surprise valley, in modoc county, California. Its rich with old west buildings and history. I think it may be right up your alley! Me n my husband have really enjoyed watching your videos, we've been watching all morning. ❤
Very cool. The picture with the mountains in the background was spot on. I must have driven by the Milton turnoff sign a hundred times back in the day, I rememberer it, but never knew there was so much history so close...
Another wonderful video You two. The funny thing is that I live in a town in Georgia called Milton. It's a shame to see all that history lost. As always thank you guys for taking us on the adventure.
Thank you very much! I suppose we think our area is somehow different from the rest of the world but glad to know there's places that look like ours! Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember driving through Milton years and seeing the little old school house. It was still standing but of course in terrible shape I believe in the 90's
Definitely would be nice to snap back in time and see how things looked back in 1871! I bet there was a lot of sawing and hammering going on. Now about all you can hear are horses munching on grass and the beep-beep-beep of bulldozers at the nearby landfill. Thanks for watching!
That was not an Oddfellows Hall in Milton. It was a Masonic Lodge (Milton Masonic Keystone Lodge No. 161). The building was built in 1871 in Copperopolis as a saloon and was used later as a town hall. It was purchased by the Masonic Lodge in 1881 and moved from Copperopolis to Milton. That is why the cemetery is called the Milton Masonic Cemetery. You will find Masonic cemeteries in many of the Sierra Nevada mining towns. I love watching your videos. I lived in Stanislaus County for a good portion of my life, drove through Hickman on my way to work in Livingston and drove through Milton many times when going from Oakdale to Nevada.
Lived in San Andreas for about 6 months in 1988,89. Lots of history in that area- much of it lost. Milton is an interesting place that many people in the valley no nothing about- thanks for making this so persons interested in local history can see some of it.
Donner, Reed and Breen all in the same cemetery? Doubt if it's a coincidence. Thanks for the videos. I'm too old and arthritic to get around anymore like you two do, but "back in the day" I was an Historical Archaeologist and Historian and used to go document many such old abandoned places in the American West. Now, I enjoy your videos.
david wrobleski thank you for your very nice compliments. Sorry you can’t get around like you once did. We will keep producing videos that you will enjoy though!!!
Upon seeing this video again. The Reed headstone right away brought to mind the Donner Expedition. I agree with you David this is not a coincidence there must be some connection. I wish some historian would look into this matter responsibly and accurately.
Saw Ferndale video, and saw copperopolis, lived in Ferndale and delivered blasting agent to gold mine in copperopolis, mine was in early 80's so more mines were there later, thanks 😊
I remember when the IOOF building burned to the ground a few years ago, so sad. I really enjoy your videos,I live nearby and visit a lot of the places you post about.
I'm not from that county. However, when I'm cruising hwy 4 with a LOCAL, I've heard something about Milton more that twice. Occult in MILTON. Devil Worishpers and the like. Has anyone heard this. No other clues.
Hey, i was looking up bio's on Merle and found your video , i wanted to thank you for that video and now im going to watch the rest of your stuff 😂😎🇺🇸 thanks again ✌
I am with Sarah and her love of animals. Amazing pet cemeteries she may enjoy if ever in the area. History related, The War Dog Memorial in Michigan. Human interest, Angel's Rest at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab Utah. The sanctuary itself is worth a visit. While in Kanab several western movie sites, John Ford loved filming in "Little Hollywood".
You should contact the owners of ORVIS ranch, there is a Little House On The Prairie site on their property. Also had a movie w/Burt Reynolds and a big rig, did a scene out there...
@@jbenziggy I use to ride that ranch with my ex husband and doctor the Orivis cattle..Once while he was out w/o me, he ran across a small engine plane wreck, and found fingers on the ground, true story...
@@jbenziggy Little House site is still there but all of the structures are gone. Two episodes of Little House (Pilot - 1974) and another about 10 years later in the ranch house, which has since burned down. I was actually in the pilot which was also filmed at Old Oak Ranch near Sonora and in Stockton. Big Country (Gregory Peck etal.), Sam Whiskey (Burt Reynolds), SHOUT! (John Travolta) and Coast to Coast (Robert Blake & Dyan Cannon). Plus lots of commercials. As for plane crash after Thanksgiving, that was on the Horseshoe Ranch. A fighter jet did crash on the Snow Ranch in the 60's. The main draws are the petroglyphs in the cave and the grinding rocks along Hood Creek.
I just found your channel, the modesto video. Milton is cool, Ive done a bit of metal detecting on a few of the ranches up there. You mentioned little house on the prairie....they were rumored to have shot a few scenes in the schoolhouse thats near salt spring reservoir, right near where you just were. If you follow milton road toward jenny lind you can see the evidence of the doodlebug dredging along the road. lots of cool stuff up there.
@@jbenziggy the school house is in salt springs Valley. If you go up to Salt Springs Reservoir in calaveras county you'll see it on the far side of the reservoir . It's in good condition.
Like the videos man. All the places I used to go. The memories come flooding back. Some good some not so good. But hell, I was young then and we were a pretty rough crowd. Work hard play hard. Friday and Saturday nights running between the Black Bart Inn and Goonies Saloon or staying in Mt. Ranch at the Blunder Inn. I sometimes wonder how I'm still alive. Wonder if Jim and Linda Felky still run the Blunder. Ever going to Moke Hill?
I really am glad that you (unknowingly) answered a question of mine! When I saw the headline, I went to Google Earth to find out where Milton was, since this California boy had never heard of the town (I wonder why?). When looking at the "God's Eye" view of G.E., I saw the unmistakable traces of a small terminal yard. When I went to Street View, I kept seeing this large, two story white building (back wall could've used some paint), but there was no trace of it on Earth. All three streets: building; overhead: weed choked lot! Kinda figured possibly a fire, thanks for confirming.
Love all the videos. Really into local History myself. Have you checked out Orvis cattle Ranch aka Snow Ranch not to far from here. A lot of history and some movies were filmed there. It's on hwy 4?
Justin Brigdale I sent them a letter to ask permission to go on the ranch but they didn’t answer me. Maybe I’ll try again. I went to school with Bridget Orvis.
@@jbenziggy That would be neat. Years ago I worked for schwan's and I use to deliver there. She use to tell me about some of the history and the movies filmed there. I hope you get the ok one of these days. Such a massive property and so much cool info.
Jeff, love the channel, just heard one thing that caught my ear, the duel you mentioned, actually happened in Lathrop, not over in the Bay area. August 14, 1889.
@@FYIfuckutube2011 Go search for and watch my Stockton cemetery video and I visit the grave of Terry and I talk about the killing that took place in Lathrop. He was killed by a bodyguard of the supreme court justice that he was attacking.
You might be interested to know that David and Mary Board are interred in the Milton Cemetery as well as several of their children. They had lived in this area since about 1854. Board's Crossing, a campground along the Stanislaus RIver is named for them. The crossing is where the Board's took their cattle across the river to feed in the summer season. There is an old cabin there that two of the Board's sons built. You can walk down to the river and you will find a monument erected in the memory of Mary and David Board. You mentioned The Little House on the Prairie. The school house used in the TV series still stands at Salt Springs Valley. Mary Board was on the school board for this school. We have enjoyed your videos. They have been very interesting.
Board's Crossing is located near Dorington, CA. Take highway 4 east to Dorington. At Dorington you will see signs for Board's Crossing. You will turn south and drive down to Board's Crossing Bridge on the Stanislaus River. The monument is down a dirt road and then it requires a short hike to actually see the monument. Salt Springs Valley is in Calaveras County. The Board family lived and ranched here near Bear Mountain. www.calaverashistory.org/salt-spring-valley Are you asking if the school house is on private property? The school house is probably on private property.
Very glad to read your post. I am a Milton resident. My cousin bought the old Prose property on rock creek road 1965. Raised cattle and worked for the telephone company. Settled in the foothills for some peace and quiet after serving in combat in the Korean war

What fun!! I'd love to do what you guys do! So beautiful and respectful.
Thank you! We work full-time with other jobs so this is what we do in our free time!
@@jbenziggy Wow! That is awesome. Maybe I can talk my hubby into it! Love what y'all do!!
I remember when the IOOF building burned to the ground a few years ago, so sad. I really enjoy your videos,I live nearby and visit a lot of the places you post about.
Thank you! We love knowing that we have a growing audience who appreciates the effort we make!
It was a Masonic Lodge, not Odd Fellows. However both organizations often shared the same meeting place.
I'm not from that county. However, when I'm cruising hwy 4 with a LOCAL, I've heard something about Milton more that twice.
Occult in MILTON. Devil Worishpers and the like.
Has anyone heard this.
No other clues.
@@unsilentabe1955 No, nothing like that there. You should consider the source of your the information pi heard please.
Forgive me for saying. But you both make THE BEST videos. I wish you could post daily because I so look forward to them
Thank you! As we grow we should be able to post more! Love your comment, sir!
Hey, i was looking up bio's on Merle and found your video , i wanted to thank you for that video and now im going to watch the rest of your stuff 😂😎🇺🇸 thanks again ✌
Always wondered about Milton as I rode back and forth to work from Columbia to Rough and Ready is. Stockton on Hwy 4 via Copperupolis circa 1999.
We have! It’s on our list! Thanks for the idea.
You should bring back that opening graphic, super cool !
enjoyed that..thank y'all
I just found your channel, the modesto video.
Love to know where that old schoolhouse is! Thank you for watching and we hope that you will subscribe!
@@jbenziggy the school house is in salt springs Valley. If you go up to Salt Springs Reservoir in calaveras county you'll see it on the far side of the reservoir . It's in good condition.
Another very interesting show
Glad you enjoyed it!!
We might get up there some day. I have a growing list! Just wish we had more time!
Been through Calaveras county many times but didn’t know Milton! Where did the people go for the Big Trees? 7:35 crazy ha. And gotta love Harold wow.
Great history presentation. You deffinatly do your homework. Keep up the good work. I'm a new subscribers.
Welcome, Dennis! Glad to have you! I appreciate your compliments. We have lots more in store!
Jeff, love the channel, just heard one thing that caught my ear, the duel you mentioned, actually happened in Lathrop, not over in the Bay area. August 14, 1889.
Billy Bob thanks. You’re not right on that. The Broderick-Terry duel was near Lake Merced in SF. There were two duels.
@@jbenziggy if I remember correctly , off the top of my head, Terry was killed by a bodyguard in Lathrop
@@FYIfuckutube2011 Go search for and watch my Stockton cemetery video and I visit the grave of Terry and I talk about the killing that took place in Lathrop. He was killed by a bodyguard of the supreme court justice that he was attacking.
@@jbenziggy yes, I have watched that, how I remembered about it... thanks
Great video, we just subscribed. My wife’s brother lives in Oakdale, Ca, about 20 miles from Milton.
Brian Nave that’s wonderful! I graduated from Oakdale High School back in the 1970s!
@@jbenziggy my brother graduated oakdale high school in 2009
Cool video on history, !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Jeff love your channel....I was thinking...Uh-Oh!!! maybe show people on a map where you are at?
Wow what a view 😮
Coalinga is a very interesting town. If you ever get up that way check it out.
What kinds of things would you want us to check out there?
Awesome!....
LOL I was thinking when you were looking at the piles of scrap wood and metal about American Pickers and then you said it. :)
Great minds must think alike! LOL
@@jbenziggy Absolutely!!! Thank you for the compliment too. :)
Judy Board thanks! Just read your message. What river are you referring to? And where is Salt Springs located? Is it on private property?
@@jbenziggy I believe that the Towers might own or know who owns the school .
@@spice1960 The Hatler family owns the school house and they let it fall down after many requests from people who wanted to fix it up.

Jeff, Don't marry Sarah!
Sarah is sweet, tries to stay engaged.
I used to live there in milton. My mom is buried there, dale ramsey. That land that's behind the cemetery and them horses belongs to the perry's great people.

Liking the video 20 seconds in. Will change that like if needed......... doubt it.. 😂
I hope you found some of it interesting. I was jazzed to find a connection to Black Bart!
History Hunters, I did Jeff. The old west history with Black Bart and the Donner names.... all cool stuff!!
There is lots of Cornish folks that settle in the Grass Valley area as well.
The Carnduff one is made of cast zinc. There are a few of them in Oklahoma and they held up really well. Also, were there not Reeds with the Donner Party and could the ones with earlier dates be cenotaphs?
My older half sister found our great grandfather's grave 15 miles from her grandmother's house in Indiana where her mom was raised. My Texan dad met her Floridian mom and they might have been from families that went to church together.
I read that was once destroyed by Toronto. You should kept driving down hunter rd lots more history. Also valley springs if you drive out to Paloma the Gwen mine and middle bar. That would take you into Jackson.
Very interesting, thank you!
At my rural school , they called that room the “Cloak Room” .
