Miss comedy like this,...freedom of expression and written and acted with a real warmth and realism .that's sadly lacking in the bland talent less offerings we get on our boxes today.....miss those wonderful days
We had a West Indian family living next door to us when I was growing up. They religiously watched Alf for the fun of laughing at him and throwing their own abuse at the TV. A lovely family who took this show for what it was - comedy!
Alf Garnett was raising social issues back in the day, the difference being they done it with humour rather than the gloom and doom of today's miserable lot
I was 17 when this was first show, remember this one. Sickness and in Health was the revival of the show Till death us do part (which I grew up with), and interestingly enough it was supposed to have been called Till death again or something like that can't remember now, but long suffering wife who was played by Dandy Nichols was suffering reallly badly with arthritis as she was in her eighties by then (hense why she's seen in the wheelchair later) so they decided to make it part of the show, which is why it ended up being called In sickness and in health. :D Sadly Nichols died in 86...
Dandy Nichols was very unwell during this series, she was almost 20 years old than Warren & she read her lines off cards that's why she keeps looking around..
Hate to say this, but that was how she played the character in Till Death.. she didn't have any issues with remembering her lines. Her memory was pin sharp until the end as Warren Mitchell once said on Des O'conner when asked about her after her death..

Back in the day when everyone laughed at the humour and didn't take things seriously, Love thy Neighbour was another classic example.
The NF took it seriously and forced other to also.
Sense of humour at its best
