- I found possibly the most valuable rock of my life so far. I shouldn't really call it a rock. "Gemstone" is more appropriate, and I almost never use that word. If you'd like to visit Hogg Mine, here's their website for more information: hoggmine.com

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Congratulations on that huge chunk of gemstone! What a delight to hear the astonishment of your hosts. The cabs are really nice, thank you for showing those. The frost you filmed at the beginning was really unusual. What a place!
That was a really fun day. Listening to Aidyn and Courtney's reaction was so much fun to listen to. Much more fun if you were the one who had just found that rock, I imagine.
Couldn’t happen to a better rock man! Congratulations! We would love to see a slice but we understand! Thanks Ann for taking Rob there!,
Maybe someday.
I think I enjoyed this trip as much as he did 😊
@@TN-Ann We did have fun, didn't we?
Rob, you are officially the rock whisperer, even outside of Michigan.
Nah, I just go out a lot. You're bound to find something if you put enough time in. When I go to Lake Superior with Sam, he almost always out does me.
First time watching your channel. Been talking for years about making it down to Hogg’s Mine with my son, this video finally convinced me to take that ride. Awesome video. Awesome channel.
That's great! I got started in this hobby through my son. He always liked polished rocks in gift shops, so we bought him a tumbler for Christmas. I was hooked pretty much immediately. It's a great family activity.
Seeing that huge smile on your face was just so sweet - like a kid at Christmas! ♥️ Congrats, Rob!
That's what I felt like.
Rob & Ann, yall in my state. I have never been to Hog Mine, but you've changed my mind about going. Hope to this spring. I have been wanting to go to Michigan and look at your beautiful rock beaches for Petoskey and Pudding stones. Thanks for all the videos. I enjoy them very much.
I'd recommend it. Obviously, not everyone gets as lucky as I did, but there's rose quarts to be found too.
Rob we have hoar frost here in Northern Arkansas, it looks like flowers and can even form on standing twigs and plants low to the ground, when it happens just under the surface it will lift the soil and when you walk or drive on it it will collapse
I was on a beach that week and the beach sand and pebbles had all been raised up. You couldn't even tell in some places until you stepped on it and sunk a few inches.
@@MichiganRocks I have literally seen people drive on hoar frost and get halfway down there drive and fall through and get stuck, that's just crazy cool.
Awesome congrats.
@@wintuwarrior5266 Wow!
Wow, great job! When they mined during WWII, they only wanted the large crystals to refine for metal. The grate they used was 6” x 6” square, and the tailings were everything that fell through that! I suggest you put it back in water for a few days to nullify that acid. The clear rose Quartz will star!
I was there for a $200 Machine Dig and my 32’ RV got stuck! Chris pulled it out backwards with his truck! Glad you had such good luck!
I soaked it for a day in baking soda water after soaking it in acid. I think it's pretty clean now.
I forgot about the star thing with the rose quartz. I have to read up on how to cut it properly. Thanks for the reminder.
Oh my goodness.! There is so much to see out in the world. !! I have never thought about rose quartz being a bolder. So excited about your aquamarine. Thank you for taking me along on your adventures. I loved the finished products🎉
Not just a boulder, but bedrock. Bigger than a boulder!
That was an amazing place
Awesome!!! God's creation is beautiful.
Rose Quartz only comes in big form
Michigan showing 'em how it's done. Good stuff.
Or just showing them how lucky I am.
The rock of a lifetime! Congratulations, Rob. Pink rocks=my fave, rose quartz. Thanks for braving the frigid temp. 🥶
No, I refuse to think of this as a rock of a lifetime because that would mean everything from now on would be worse. I still have time to find an even better one, and I plan to do so!
For all that you do for the Rocking community, that is a justified reward. What a cool piece of aquamarine! You deserve it. How ironic that you had such unseasonably cold weather in Georgia but I'll bet that piece of rock warned you right up. 😁 Congrats!
I really was a lot warmer after finding that. The day was warming up, but a shot of adrenaline helped too.
JACKPOT!! 😄 That big piece is the best I’ve seen you hound since I’ve been on your site. Nice job. The pink quartz is so pretty and your cabs are beautiful.
The four pound agate I found a couple summers ago was pretty awesome too. Not a great agate, but a big one.
Not surprised YOU found this beautiful aquamarine : you have the eyes of a lover to spot the loveliest rocks 😍
It's my birthstone, but I doubt that had anything to do with it. Just good luck this time.
Amazing rock Rob! It’s about time the Universe gives back for all the good you do in this rockhound world!
Nah, the universe has been giving me plenty. They don't have to be worth a lot to be rewarding for me to find.
@@MichiganRocks You’re right and your words so modest and true! You’re the best!
Rob, you're downright giddy! What a find!
I was a little giddy. It's fun to find something like that. If I didn't get giddy once in awhile with this hobby, it would probably be the wrong hobby for me.
WOW, Rob! What a great treasure! Congratulations! You were so happy, with a huge smile the entire time!
I think it would be cool to polish that one flat face. Doing so would allow you to keep the integrity of the specimen, while highlighting the beautiful color and clarity of the beryl crystals.
If I do a face polish, that's the side I'm leaning toward since I won't have to remove as much material.
Someday, some way...I'll get my gypsy feet back to adventure mode. So happy for you.
Great find rob! Well done.
I had no idea this place even existed and I am so close. How fun to care something you found.
You'll have to go check it out!
Amazing adventure! Nice trophy for your rock room, too❤ Thanks for sharing Rob!❤
Ohmigosh, Rob, this was so much fun to watch! I loved your excitement - it sounded familiar. :) Good job, Rob!
It was fun to experience too! I'm becoming quite the traveler lately!
I've just watched this.
Omg that would be so much fun.
Beautiful stones, and well done on finding that big beauty
It was a ton of fun!
So glad that you found such a great specimen!
Awesome place. That was quite a jackpot!!👍👍
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: This is amazing!!
Wow! How amazing!! Thanks for sharing 😊😊😊
I agree Bones. Im cold just watching the video.
Wow, great job Rob, that’s a lovely specimen piece and some beautiful smalls. Nice
Thanks for sharing your rock hunting adventures!
You're welcome, Cathy!
So very cool, hope to see it down the road
I wish you did one slab off the big guy, both to have a flat surface to rest it on, and to polish to see inside. I don’t blame you for not touching it…I’m just a curious person. Nice hunt. Thank you.
Ann suggested the same thing-take one slab off the bottom to give it a base to set on. It sets pretty well without doing that so for now I'm holding off. This rock wouldn't fit in my ten inch saw anyhow, although I know a guy who has a 24" saw who would probably cut it for me.
That looks like fun! Central Ohio is getting snow! My daffodils are up about three inches. I would lick that rock! Holy bologna!
You have daffodils in Ohio?!? We are a long way from daffodils, although it has been a ridiculously warm winter. It was only in the low twenties today though, and we finally got a little snow yesterday. I was able to go cross country skiing today.
@@MichiganRocks so far my Daffodils, Hyacinths, my Forsythia is putting out shoots, and I don't want to say for sure, but one other plant looks like one of my Tulips! It's been ridiculously mild. I'm afraid of this snow from today. About 3 inches worth. The most I have ahad this winter is about an inch and it wasn't around long. I've never been skiing. Do you go to a place or have a place you go to on your own?
@@saralynn518 I used to downhill ski, but now I cross country ski. There is a really nice trail near me that is groomed by volunteers.
Wow, what a lucky find, can`t wait to see what you will do with it. oh, I loved those pendants. Congratulation!!
I'm curious what I'll do with it too. Right now, I'm just going to think about it for awhile.
Congratulations!! It’s a beautiful piece ❤
That's a hogger.
The Hogg Mine is a gem of a place in Georgia.
Very well said. I like puns.
What a wonderful adventure! Amazing finds! I will be watching for those tumbled stones!
I threw the rose quartz in the tumbler on Friday.
Beautiful find, Congratulations.
That was an amazing fine, Congrats!!! I live about 25 miles from there and will be visiting this year, thanks for sharing
Yep, that's a no-brainer if you live that close. Fun day.
Wow Rob I didn't know for sure if you had your wife with you or not. That really cool you brought her with you so have fun both of you dig side by side.
No, Ann is not my wife, she was my rock hunting guide for the week. Nancy is willing to do some rock hunting with me, but all day, every day for a week is too much for her. I asked her several times to come along, but she opted to stay home.
That's the feeling we all look for when rockhounding! Congrats, and thanks for sharing!!
I love that feeling!
Wow! Congratulations, Rob! Awesome find
Thanks, Kris!
Congrats Robert!!!
At 17:20, the best rose was actually behind you on the slope around the pit where there is always gem quartz. Nice straited pieces. And cool biggin'. Keep it as a specimen as it probably does not have a clear center.
We didn't dig around that hillside much. There are quite a few places to explore there, so there was no way to get to all of them. I'm just thrilled to have found that huge aquamarine.
Wow, wonderful find Rob!
Congratulations on your great find!
Oh wow! That’s a great day of rock hounding!
Thank you for the great video! Congratulations on the great find!
Thanks, Melinda!
Very fun, Rob! Congrats on finding that lunker!
Thanks Jim!
Beautiful find. I can't wait to see the little stones after you tumble.
I have a lot on my tumbling list, so you might be waiting for awhile.
Nice cold trip to the mine with Ann SP. Your videos are fun no matter what the conditions are. I love the pendants. Thanks for sharing.
My videos are probably all the same conditions on your couch! I warmed up after finding that monster.
Nice find !
I apreciate your work so much.
You may be retired but you still teach.
I have learned so much about tumbling from your videos, thanks man!
It's not so much that I retired as switched jobs. This UA-cam thing takes up pretty much all of my time. I'm not sure if I can call it a job if I'm having so much fun though.
Congrats on your amazing find!! It's always fun to get out in other places rockhounding!!
I haven't traveled out of Michigan rockhounding that much except within the past year. I have really enjoyed different sorts of hunts.
Incredible find, Rob! Congratulations!
Thanks, Patty!
Amazing find!
What a great find!
Congrats, Rob!!
Congrats on your finds
Great find, and lots of friendly people. Fun video, thanks. But I'm looking forward to summer treks along Great Lakes' beaches.
I was just wading in Lake Huron (in waders of course) last week.
Congrats!
Sick find, congrats!
wow impressive find, thank you for sharing :D
One of my top ten videos from Rob.
That's good to hear!
Wow, that is all so awesome. Beautiful colors. I love rose quartz, but sadly I have a hard time trying to tumble it. Haven't quite got the knack of it yet. Congratulations on that huge find. It's spectacular.
I have tumbled stuff like amethyst with pretty good success.
Warmer up here in TC than there!!! Wow! Thanks for this video.
I think it was colder in Alpena when I was down there in mid January, but it was warmer before I left and after I came home.
congrats, Rob. Amazing aquamarine. Been to Hogg mine, and we only found Beryl up to thumb size. Did well on the rose quartz, happily.
That's all I was hoping to find. Needless to say, I was very happy with finding something a bit bigger than my thumb.
@@MichiganRocks heck yeah, you did great! In our defense, it was 100° in the shade when we went, and digging wasn't really feasible. We mostly surface collected and a found a few small (but facetable) pieces.
@@debivort If it's not the cold, it's the heat I guess. I'll take my day there over yours. I was dressed pretty warm, so I was only cold in the morning.
Wow awesome Rocks you have there 😎😮! Beautiful finde Rob greetings to you 👋
Hallo!
Super neat!
I just finished watching all of this video. I loved the ending when the young man waves bye. What a fun day you must of had. BTW great find.
Aidyn was great. I've been in contact with him since that trip. I sent him a box of goodies from Michigan as a thank you for guiding us to the good stuff. He's really into rocks. We saw him earlier that week at Patty Quarry collecting Summerville agate, and he posted pictures of some really cool smokey quartz crystals recently on Facebook.
Congratulations, you deserve the win!
I'm not sure I deserve it, but I'll take the win.
Cool beans Rob.
Nice find, Rob! That's a really neat rock.
I sure think so.
I sooooo hope you decide to slice a small part off to expose the beauty inside!!! What an amazing treasure you found!!
If I do, I'll post a video about it for sure.
Incredible find! I want to make it to Hogg Mine, one of these days!
I found it well worth going!
Nice find Rob.
Congratulations
I was begging ‘oh please slab just that knob’! But I get it 🥺 Nature is so beautiful and I’m sure you’ll figure out the perfect thing for it ❤️✌️🇺🇸
I just have to age it for a bit. I'll probably do something with it eventually.
Great find, Rob! I love exploring and poking around pegmatites because they are so unique; no two are the same. I'll be visiting a few in June when I'm in New Hampshire.
I had to grit my teeth a little though at Courtney's explanation of the pegmatite and beryl (aquamarine and beryl are the SAME mineral!) 🙄
Also, some of what you're calling quartz with the white lines "might" be feldspar (very common mineral in a pegmatite) with what are called exsolution lamellae. Easy way to check is their hardness is different; feldspar is softer than quartz.
I filled a twelve pound tumbler with some of this and opened it tonight. It was very fractured, so I didn't know what to expect. The tumbler starts 3/4 full and was barely 1/2 full when I opened it. Lots of little pieces that crumbled off the bigger stuff, and the more solid stuff was very worn down for only a week of tumbling.
My 11 year old son's birthstone is aquamarine. I bought a rock about 1/4 the size of the big one you found. It's kinda the shape of a football. I cleaned it real good and put it in a vibratory tumbler with polish for about 10 days. I didn't want the shape to change so I didn't put in a rotary. It turned out aqua blue and shiny. He loves it.
It's my birthstone too. It's the first piece I have ever had.
Congratulations on your find! That's amazing rock. Love specimens. Cool mine. Those stripped rocks are neat. Seems like red soil has a lot of cool crystals and minerals. Kinds like Arkansas soil.
Yeah, the whole week was red clay, I think and we found quite a few different crystals and minerals.
Congrats on your find😃
Thanks!
OMG ~ Beginner's Luck!! Don't cut it! Please leave it all washed up as a Prize specimen.. Love thiw video. Love the ones who work there moaning over your find! Thanks for taking us along!!
I can't promise I won't ever do anything to it, but for now it's staying the way it is.
My two favourite gems, aquamarine is my birthstone and rose quartz is my absolute favourite for its calming beauty, lots of specimens dotted around my home in the U.K. That was a great hunt Rob, so different from pudding stones et al.
Way different than how I usually hunt or what I usually find. I love Michigan, but it's been fun getting to see some places farther from home lately.
Rob luck! Nice find!
Non fractured rose quartz from hog mine is known to star. Haven't heard mention of that on the video.
Ann mentioned that on our drive there. I guess I never mentioned it. There's some complicated way to cut it in order to show the star, but I haven't tried that yet. I don't think it all has stars though.
Hi Rob, great find, u are lucky !
Very lucky. I still can't believe it.
Wow! How cool is that 🙌
Pretty darn cool.
I love watching your videos. You find great stuff. Its sleeting here in western Kentucky and cold So I can't look for rocks right now lol.
We have snow here now, but I was out wading in Lake Huron last week. I was wearing waders of course.
@@MichiganRocks I have been out looking also even though it is cold just couldn't look yesterday and today we are thawing out lol. Hope you find a lot of good rocks to show us.
I don't know how you guys do it - I'm cold when its 18 degrees Celsius. 🥶
I was cold that morning, but I warmed up after finding that prize rock.
Way to go Rob! Talk about beginners luck!
I know! Beginner's luck is fine with me.
Amazing.
If you ever visit Southern California, you should plan a visit to the Oceanview Mine in Pala, Indian reservation, northern San Diego Co. Great History with the mine. With your luck, who knows?
What might I find there?
I found Rain water is a beautiful soak for mineral reveal.
"The water is hard here". lol. You mean it is frozen Mike lol. I literally laughed out loud for real when you said that.
We have hard water in Michigan a lot too. We can even walk on water.
@@MichiganRocks ok now I am just very confused. I thought you just meant frozen water. But I have never heard off this walking on water because it's hard? Would love to be educated tho
@@kimberlyhemminger3822 I was talking about frozen water. Lakes freeze here and people actually drive their trucks out on them. By "walking on water" I just meant walking on frozen lakes.
@@MichiganRocks I know I feel dumb lol. I gotta now tho.
Congratulations on that incredible boulder of aquamarine! Well done and I'm jealous. Not really, it beautiful.
I'm still really excited about that one.
You should be right at home with 18 degree weather Rob. Ha Ha. The needle frost frost was really unique. I wonder what phenomenon causes that. Down here in Indiana we occasionally get what they call Hoarfrost when all the trees and weeds are covered with a fuzzy frost on an extremely cold morning.
Congratulations on that monumental aquamarine find that’s wonderful. It’s about time you got a reward for all your efforts. I think I would have a blast at that place. Super video !!! 1:44
It hasn't been that cold in Michigan this winter! I was pretty cold in the morning but I warmed up after finding that monster aquamarine.
I don't know if it's called hoarfrost, but we get frost that covers the trees here sometimes too. A couple weeks ago, my drive to church was absolutely amazing. There was thick, white frost on all the trees. When the sun hit it the right way, it just shone.
Nice I went to Hogg mine a few months ago. It’s only 2 hours away for me. Probably going back soon. Nice finds. 👍
I'd be going once in awhile if it was closer to me. Fun place.
@@MichiganRocks yeah I want to go back I got some super nice aquamarine and a bunch of juicy rose quartz as well. I’m definitely going back. 👍
@@Algoldprospecting Good luck!
Wow outstanding find. I would contour polish at least two sides of that beautiful specimen.
I might do that eventually. I just need to think about it for awhile. Plus that's an outside job.
Looks like you are in Hogg Heaven Rob! You may need to go back to Michigan to get warm.
I was literally in Hogg heaven! That place was a ton of fun.
If and when you come back down you have got to go to Graves Mountain. One of the best rockhounding sites in the world!
That was on our list, but I talked to the caretaker and he said he didn't want videos of it on the internet. I decided not to point out that there were already quite a few.
