    In my long, long sewing history I have never made trousers. Not only am I plus sized, but I am also slightly under 5 feet tall. Watching you shook my intimidation tree down to its last leaf. Also Gemma, your tenacity gained you a new subscriber. Watching and waiting for your next video from Texas, USA

    They turned out fantastic. They look great on you. I found that the level lines and the center grainline on the patterns helped me identify the needed tweaks for good fit. So essentially combining handmadephd’s blog information with the top down center out method has changed the entire pants fitting game for me. Wearing well fitting pants on my plus sized body makes me feel like I’m walking on air. I’m serious.

As much peace as we can find with our bodies, in challenging moments, those nit-picking voices can sneak back in. I'm thrilled that this was such a big win for you in the end. I've just started sewing, and not sure when I'll tackle pants. I'm just tip-toeing into clothing right now. Excellent video! I've spent all day working on my Jessa Trousers TATB pattern and I am surprised at how well this technique works. I sorted my waistband and my front piece, but found I still needed more fabric in the back as I was struggling to stick it to the CB velcro areas I was using. My arm hurts now from all the twisting. I've now cut out a new back piece with 4 inches extra fabric at the top and will try again. Thank you for this video, I've saved it to my TDCO playlist.

    Brilliant! 20:53--My immediate thought was that the leg half is hiked up about 2" too high. As soon as you pinned it, the waistband made a 2" v-shaped dip down at the center. Until then, the waistband looked perfectly fitted. In the back-same thought. But then, you lowered the back, and the bum immediately looked right. It was a delight to watch your process. Your finished pants were a smashing success in fit, drape, design. I'm going to do this--very excited. Brava!

  • @LS-vq2or

    Seeing your process and how it turnt out made me incredibly happy and I don't even know you!! You're so right about how destructive it is "diagnosing problems" to your body to fit a garment on you, and this method truly is a game changer and I haven't even tried it myself I just know that when I do it will be a way nicer experience than any bajillion toiles sewing aventures I've had so far. I hate that people commented those types of things when you asked for tips, and I'm truly hoping this method can slowly become the norm rather than people staring at your body trying to find it issues to fix and giving unsolicited comments about your body in the mean time. I do fear that I'll have a hard time pinning stuff to my body too though when I do give it a go. I have chronic pain in my arms and POTS like symptoms and this sounds super painful and exhausting to do. I think I would have just lied down and tried pinning it this way as I sometimes do when trying to tie wrap tops on me or something. Don't know if it would work for everyone tho, just an idea for next time! I love love love the pants you made they look so gorgeous and well fitted. Thank you for documenting your process it was really interesting!

    • @velvetycleopatra
      @velvetycleopatra  Рік тому +3

      Thank you so much for your kind words! I didn't even think of laying down to pin the sides. I will definitely try that next time. You could maybe sew velcro strips down the side seams 🤔 I would still rather struggle with pinning on myself than make endless toiles and try to guess which adjustments I need. X

    • @LS-vq2or
      @LS-vq2or Рік тому +1

      @@velvetycleopatra You’re welcome 😊 the velcro idea is such an interesting one too!! There are so many times I thought if everything had velcro life would be easier but velcro not being the most resistant thing it’s never ideal but for this method it might be a good way to make it accessible for both disabled people and plus size people. I like it! But it would be tricky to make it not stick to the places you don’t want it since it’s not something you can shape like you do with pins mmh much to think about haha.

    I have never heard of this fitting method before. It looks like a complete game changer! Lol I've been sewing for over 12 years and still haven't attempted trousers on myself! I may have to finally give it a go.

    You have a great sense of humour and I loved this video. Don’t worry - I have just found out that I have a high back and fowrard shoulders and blah blah so we all have our fitting issues. I just made a pair of pants and they look like jodhpurs (sticking 😂out hips so we all have our issues, Loved your process of thinking and persistence,

    Oh my word! Your trousers are amazing!!! I have just fitted my waistband using the TDCO method for the first time and I was watching The Crooked Hem videos to see the next step. When I saw your video pop up on the sidebar I knew I had to watch it. (I always admire your makes on Minerva - you really rock that vintage look and you always look stunning!) I got so excited seeing you totally nail the fit of your trousers - I might have let out a whoop! 😁
    Right, I'd better get on with preparing my pattern. Oh, and I just wanted to say you were so brave to tackle these trousers as your very first trousers! Now that I've seen yours, I think I might have to give this pattern a go too 😄

    This was amazing.Your so truthful,matter of fact yet sensitive. Your trousers look beautiful and so professional .I've always bought trousers and then adjusted them to fit me.Once they feel right I then take a pattern from them and use this as a sloper to guide how to adjust other trouser patterns. However,I am going to try the top down centre out method as your trousers look so good.

    thank you so much for showing this! It was driving me crazy when people were just talking about it. I need it written down or shown.. or my little brain tunes out! This helped me so so much to see how it works. I so far haven't started with my own but I think what I will learn from you is that I will try put velcro/button on the waistband so Í can open and close it and then I can close the side seam (I am plus sized too) without wearing it and then put it on and see

    I thoroughly enjoyed this. I have made myself a few pairs of trousers and they are always too big, but I have a fear of making them too small and add a bit. I have just finished making pietra pants. I really took my time, made sure that I didn't just add anything and they are still too big. Currently pulling them apart to try and fix. But I have been watching the crooked hem and her series on tdco. I have watched it through twice. So you have given me more confidence to try. So thank you.

    The first trousers I ever made were tdco and it was relatively easy, though like you, I can’t always reach all my seams. I used a pencil to sketch out the side seams which was helpful. J Stern has added using Velcro, once you get a good fitting waist band you can reuse for other pants where you don’t need pins! I have a thick waist and narrower hips, full belly, flat bum haha it’s an issue but I agree that this method takes the blame game out of pattern fitting! Great job figuring it out, I was sideline rooting for dropping the crotch a little!

    I absolutely loved this video. Not just because I tried Top Down Centre Out for the first time yesterday, but because you took me on a journey that reflected my own questions and frustrations when I tried the method myself. Your pants are absolutely perfect, and way better than anything you could buy to give you the same style. I have been sewing for many years, and this method is by far the most sensible when it comes to pants making. Thanks so much for your video, it was entertaining, inspiring and original. You are a gem.
