Wow this is literally the only review for FromSoftware's (actual) weirdest game called Thousand Land. What an excellent video I am glad that I watched it all the way through.
I'm glad I watched the only review for From Softwares weirdest game called Thousand Land too
Edit: (actual)
@@keithmichael112 I'm inclined to agree friend. I too feel proud of my decision to start UA-cam's (actual) only review on FromSoftware's (actual) weirdest game called Thousand Land and watch it to completion.

So when you releasing a 26 book series on the lore of thousand lands. None of which is in the game or hinted at by ppl who actually worked on the game because the lore basically boils down to that Rick and Morty bit with random words in place of story telling.?
Yet another Fromsoftware game featuring Big trees that give life to the world and giants that wanna kill em
Aaagaaain
But seriously I am surprised there's as much of this game in their future ones
The APO are adorable and I want them to cameo in every game ever
Imagine the Apo in Sniper Elite or something.

It's time for the Thousand Land renaissance.
Finally, I was trying to find ANY audio commentary about this game for months. Tried downloading a [legal copy] and it didn't work. Thanks

Major kudos to MrRichard999 for doing the translation of this obscure title, making this video possible. :D
The guy is an absolute machine, cranking out completely unexpected translation/hacking work. He does seem to have stopped as of late though?
I enjoy souls-like games a lot, but I still somewhat miss the days when From Software made low budget games of all genres. I liked Enchanted Arms a lot, it was a really fun monster collecting game though its biggest fault is that the human protagonists would level up and become much stronger than the monsters.
I agree, I’ve always had a soft spot for smaller, experimental games like this.
Early palworld
Derasiné was also great as is not so old
Good lord, I want a new lost kingdoms game so bad. Imagine fast paced souls-like action but with card throwing monster management instead.
I want my Adventures of Cookie and Cream 2
Your delivery on the history of the original box's sales in Japan isnabsolutely exquisite, perfect comedic timing and delivery, you had me believing for a second thst time might not have been as catastrophic as it was alleged to be, and then dropped that it in fact WAS.
At least From seems to have really liked the hardware, seeing as how they made 4 games for the platform and only TWO for the GameCube.
OG Xbox was a treasure trove of weird and unusual games made by Japanese devs, shame it mostly went away from the 360 onward, yet another reason the OG 'box was so special.
Thanks for speading awareness of this games existence.
Now if you excuse me, I'll comb through the entire soundtrack trying to find out which tracks were made by Kota Hoshino and Tsukasa Saitoh, since I'm an avid Hoshino fan.
This is a gold mine you just unearthed!
I honestly laughed out loud when I saw that quip about Kota Hoshino like “ well, he’s put on some weird funny songs for cookie and cream so maybe his thousand land stuff will sound different too” and it’s mini Evergrace.
It's so in line with FS games at the time! Though, I also expected something along the lines of Jungle theme of Cookie and Cream but it was something...of an hybrid of his other tracks?
Knowing you Alayna, you probably looked through the soundtrack already!
Also the skit with Hoshino made me really happy for some reason, thank you for that, MadmanEpic!
@@TheBigHaloFreak I actually haven't looked through the soundtrack yet! just from one glance it's not fully on youtube? is this another audio uploading project?? (jk)
You're joking but there has to be one non-jp person out there whose living for Thousand Land.
I found a download link to the soundtrack in the desciption of "VGMemory Groove #13 : Thousand Land Xbox (BGM - techno 16)".
Also took a dip into the Soundtrack and it's literally just 10 tracks with 10 variations each. I love it 😭
Can’t wait for this year’s TGA newest announcement from FROMSOFT:
Thousand Land: Embers of Apo
Oh my god I can’t believe you did a video on Bloodborne 2!

It'll happen right after Bloodborne 2, I am sure of it.
you cooked too hard. now america burns in cosmic fire.
I’m not entirely sure this script was faithfully translated, lol
I dunno, the writing in the early AC games has a similar level of goofiness, checks out to me
Thank you for doing a public service by making a Thousand Land video when nobody else would o7
I must shield my eyes from this game until I play it myself, but great presentation of the game and its cutscenes from the little bit I've watched already. I also had no idea there was an English patch so thanks for making me aware of that... I thought it was going to be a pain to understand/play like SLV
Considering the late 1990's and early 2000's were when RTS games were at their most popular, it's unsurprising that we got a lot of experimental titles in the genre. Unfortunately, they could be hit or miss in quality, so I can't say I'm surprised that Thousand Land turned out to be a mixed bag. Still, it's cool to see some history for an older FromSoftware game that isn't part of a franchise or a precursor to Dark Souls.
I didn't realize ever grace was a fromsoft game, one of my favorites back in the day, with the interesting mechanic of "the harder you press the more damage you do" because the ps2 technically has analog face buttons, but that's the only game that uses that afaik
Every racing game plus metal gear. Im sure there's others, but those are the big examples.
The Bouncer is here yelling at you for not remembering that it uses this feature as well.
@@timhorton8085 apparently F1, flatout and GTA indeed did that.
star ocean also has a section that uses it?
and okami uses it to vary the thickness of the stroke.
there's quite a few more than I thought.
but it's the only game I saw that explicitly had that as an option.
@@satibel Ratchet and Clank 1, 2 and 3 used them for both the racing portions, for jumps (you could have higher or shorter jumps) and also would determine how fast you ascended or descended when swimming or when using the glider (which I think was specifically in R&C 2.)
God Hand, iirc
Thank you for this video. I am so glad I watched it even though youtube decided to freeze up at 0:19 and i had to stare at sharline evergrace for several minutes. I learned a lot about Thousand Land and the cute little characterization of the APO makes me a little more interested to play it one day. Thank you for sharing this!!!!!!!!!
Greetings Evergrace archivist
@@Cryveil I know you! i think sharline would get a stick and skewer an APO to eat for dinner

The xbox live component of this game is working and publicly supported on insignia.
If you want to play with someone, make sure you both have the same "version" that being translated vs not. Otherwise you may not be able to see each others games.
They should make a sequel to this game with better ai and references to other fromsoft games
Maybe as costumes for the Apo, I can totally imagine them looking adorable wearing Dark Souls armour
I would love a new form of this game! It's like if Chao Garden went to war~
I miss when devs put this much effort and personality into games. Everything felt so fresh and novel back then

lmao nice, got it. Video good, haven't finished yet but the game is... something. Everyone had to start somewhere before they struck gold I guess
FromSoft (despite my love for King’s Field and Armoured Core growing up) was a pretty 3rd tier dev for basically their entire existence. Miyazaki literally turned they entire company around, there’s a reason he got promoted from product owner to ceo
honestly I'm surprised it took as long as it did for someone to catch that
@@MadmanEpic same
I looked at it straight away when you mentioned how the other "players" have those little messages, wondered what you had, noticed code, but figured someone already got it.
Then around the part where you talk about music I decide to check comments if anyone announced getting it... And did not find anything.
Thus, tried it, and boom
Didnt finish the video yet but I just wanted to say that Im glad you picked this game up :)
First time I saw the game.
And I have a feeling that this video might blow up thanks to your impeccable timing and thr internet loves obscure games.

Thousand Land will probably never get a part 2 or even a remaster, but maybe its time for 'Apo Souls'
Cool! Yeah, the only English review I've ever seen of this game was from ThorHighHeels, but this is far more focused on it, his was about a bunch of Japan only Xbox games, so he didn't get in as deep as you.
Someone should phone Devolver Digital for this one since they brought back Metal Wolf Chaos
Man, it’s hard to believe Fromsoft used to be able to make more than one kind of game
Oh, thanks for reminding me this had a translation! I completely forgot.
2:05 Woah. Add some more synth choir and hammond organ and you got a new Ryota Kozuka battle theme.
"You have a glimmer of talent. Try harder". FromSoft telling players to Git Gud even before the soul's games
It was tripping me out just how much your delivery sounds like Scott The Woz at times
Ahh, now I see the origins of the lands between. So obvious now.
There’s two weird games by fromsoft on the OG Xbox, this and metal wolf chaos (which the remaster was published by devolver of all people!)
isnt Otogi also on the og xbox and 360?

The whole "make your board, then smash it against the enemy's board to create the playing field" reminds me of the Fort Condor minigame in the FF7 remake. Neat idea. There were a lot more "cute RTS" games in the 90s and early 00s, like Army Men, Gruntz, Planet Blupi, Fat Princess...I'm sure there must be more even from today, but it's a strange genre that somehow makes a lot of sense.
... Good sir, I want this more than the Elden Ring DLC now. How dare you uncover this interesting old RTS, thank you!
I didn't even know this got a release. I remember Edge magazine had a small preview back in the day, but it never got a review.
Videos like this make the internet worthwhile
Ah yes, another weird, obscure game with cartoony-ish visuals I can randomly mention in a conversation with my younger sister.
This really is the only review if From Software's (actual) weirdest game; titled Thousamd Land. I really Learned about From Software's (actual) Weirdest game; titles thousand lands.
Killin groove sounded like mama I’m in love with a criminal for a sec and it caught me off guard when it started 😭
Awesome work btw!!
3:44 **MegaMan Battle Network Intensified for a moment!** 👀🔊
This reminds me of Games like Populous where you control the terrain and use powers but your people only vaguely listen to you. And I love these customization options! Normally I don't care that much, but these look fun, especially the strawberry.
I am glad I've learned of the existence of APO. Thank you so much for this.
Oh yeah, the game they came with is kinda neat too.
Ah, man, I remember playing this all of the time with my siblings growing up!
I’m just kidding, I’ve never heard of this game in my life until now.
Somehow I didn't know this game existed. It's right up my alley, actually.
Pretty cool, ngl. I just got my 3d printer ready and gonna give it a test run, maybe I print an APO, they're neat and cute
i appreciate the review but i won't stand for the implication that evergrace's soundtrack is bad
we need TWO thousand land
I can't fucking believe they used that "Where my dawgs, where my dawgs at yo?" sample in the ending and credits themes.
The hands off feeling reminds me of some of those god games where your units do what they see fit
I remember seeing those creatures in another forgotten FromSoft game: Enchanted Arms.
Ah yes time to binge watch all of this guys stuff 😮💨
Is it strange that I can see the modern Fromsoft in this? It's like looking at a childhood photo of Fromsoft where you can hardly tell it's them
This look amazing. It's so weird, the auto battle real time strategy element is a lot like a game I am playing now, necrosmith, but this building your stage and fighting with other stages is awesome, I'm vaguely reminded of stratosphere, only that land mass is basically a ship. Seriously need more of this kind of thing. Creation vs creation, fitting for the armored core guys.
Fire video sad youtube is gonna hide it away
3:36 “Get on with it!”
Ok, but why did they call it thousand land when each side can only have 50 apos?
Are they stupid?
Cause there a thousand land
There’s 10 fights in each list of challengers, and 10 fights * 100 apos per fight = 1000? Maybe
There better be some Thousand Land™ easter eggs in Bludborn 2; Bigger and Bludier!™ or I'll catch a flight to japan and scream directly in Mumasuki's face
We gotta bring slating back
So, after learning about this, I kind of want a modern Thousand Land!
New Scott the Woz content!
this is like the first iteration of an Oxygen Not Included kind of game, but tower defence
FromSoft made their own Dungeon Keeper! This is exactly the same gameplay, mostly: units are movable but make their own decisions based on movement. Peon units will capture land squares. This is literally exactly the same...awesome
Majuular covered the King's Field and Shadow Tower games.
Nitro Rad covered the Echo Night series and Kuon.
IronPineapple covered King's Field 4 and Ninja Blade.
Lvljake covered Evergrace and Forever Kingdom.

Now we need someone to do in-depth reviews of the Otogi games and Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2.
Evergrace exists! Check out Lvljake’s two-video series on it. So good.

This game pre-dates Miyazaki joining Fromsoft by 4 years, also, during this period Fromsoft was only known for their mecha games, King's Field was already long forgotten.
