Stanley Kubrick's 13th - EYES WIDE SHUT - Analysis (part 1)

  • Eyes Wide Shut is Stanley Kubrick’s 13th film, which makes EWS the cinematic equivalent of the number 13.
    One can approach the number 13 in various ways. One of the ways is to approach the number 13 as being part of a (certain) sequence.
    So, here it's about the relationship between the number 13 and the other numbers.
    The relationship between the numbers sounds like music.
    A video published by "DegenerateTimes" (on november 20th, 2011) also argues that Eyes Wide Shut is about the "number 13". See text in description space of this video: • Eyes Wide Shut = NEURO...

What a beautiful beautiful video. The thing with the notes in the song just amazes me. Well, it all amazes me. EDIT: it's curious also how Alice in Wonderland (which this film clearly references, with the looking glass, etc) is all about Alice and "The Queen of Hearts".

    I mean, wow. You're definitely on to something with the idea of the heart correlating with the sequence of numbers. Even the progressions in the score align perfectly with the actions of the Harford family. One thing i do find particularly interesting though is that William Harford is a doctor. And there's a scene where he checks the heart of one of his female patients fairly early on through the film. That scene is interwoven with scenes showing Alice spending time with Helena. I wonder if there's any pattern like relevance there. I'll have to go back and watch the movie again for myself. Anyway, great finds!

    • @somethingaboutthemovies5116
      @somethingaboutthemovies5116  7 років тому +3

      Ha thanks! I see, that parellel montage is really interesting concerning the score indeed. I remember a documentary (or something) where someone said that Kubrick wanted every musical note used in Paths of Glory to be justified cinematically. So, yeah EWS takes this to another level, I guess. The movie feels like it could evaporate any moment, it's so subtlely connected to the music. Absolutely, William Harford being a doctor is really interesting and makes sense; especially that scene you mentioned, where he checks the heart, while Alice and Helena are at home. It's interesting that Helena always is at home (home is where the heart is) except in the final scene.

    Ok i c u looked in every frame searching for 12 13 14 and any number that happens to b present u want to find, but u only validate the numbers when u find them but why ignore the rest of numbers all over the place... For u the number of steps r only important when they r a number u want to find the rest of steps characters take that r not in numbers u want to find become uninportant... What about thr number of leaves on tye tree st the ofice? Or thr number of paintings in tje wall? The number of words in the sentences they speak? I am sure if i look hard enough for a number that relates to me im bound to find them in enough places to convince anyone kubrick was hiving me a secret code... Kubrick is above all a visual director who didnt make a movie hoping people who watvhed it ignore whats being shown and count steps and letters and musical notes instead. What u prove is that in randomness one can find any code if only pay atention to what helps his thesis and ignore those that do not. Patterns form by nature since our brains r wired to underdtand shapes we hope to find ignoring those that offer no help... U wasted time looking for what suits u and not approach it objectibly and make a fool of those who think your labor has any meaning beuond what u so simplistically reduced the meaning of this film in such a simple sentence i could get from a fortune coockie Kubrick was more complex than u simplify him by ignoring the real important and complex themes that deserve more credit than simplify every thing to meaning a word a single thought and whatever could have any real meaning u take it away by dismissing what u cant have access to since u r reading things that might have meaning with things that do not and u take it so far to negate chance and coincidence that u loose any credibility by just becoming a caricature of understanding what requires not to understand at all. U over do it enough to become a joke.

      Agreed. So called number theorists and the preoccupied mathematical human strategists that today's world spews out of it's various institutions are often so desperate to find critical meaning in their virtually autistic perspective of the world, as not realize how purely subjective their overtly convenient observations are.
      Their preconceived ideas only require the confirming bias of cherry picked arithmetic to find their favorite flavors (tropes/trends/assumptions/clues) without interrogation of any other surrounding flavors that fall outside of their preferred filter. They possibly have too little self awareness to realize they are so willful in their cherry picking, but I see very little intellectual sincerity in these types.

      Great angle. Man... I don't know. During my vacation I read a great essay by Paul Valéry, which could be appropriate for now. Last line: "I try never to forget that every man is the measure of things."

    • @87rtlandry
      @87rtlandry 5 років тому +1

      Something About The Movies So do you believe that man is truly the center of all things? Based on the fact that humanity is aware of nature? Say, if not for humanity, then what purpose is there to the universe? Awareness appears to be paramount. Have you read any Nietzsche or Jung? On consciousness and the self? I have read Jung, but not Nietszche, he seems too complicated for me. 😂

    • @somethingaboutthemovies5116
      @somethingaboutthemovies5116  5 років тому +2

      Ahh that made me think man.. I thought that Valéry's last line was echoing idealism, in the Kantian/Schopenhauerian sense. Which implies that man cannot know anything outside the mind (I'm sure there's a better definition). In that way, I believe, man is the measure of things. Interesting you've read Jung... I haven't really read anything of both Jung and Nietzsche to be honest, though I am a bit familiar with some of their basic concepts. Have watched the documentary "Carl Jung - Matter of Heart (1983)", and I was thrilled by it. It really invites you to read his books. I've read Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation" quite recently. I was very glad I read it. In general, I felt very much in tune with this way of approaching reality and also art. Consciousness, awareness and self is something truly basic and is often overlooked or taken for granted. Basically, when it's overlooked it results in materialism; when it's not overlooked it results in idealism. That point also is made clear in "Will and Representation". You know, in genereal, you could have a lot of interesting theories, but do they really get you outside of yourself? I guess we're searching for some kind of mind-escape. Therefore, I think movies are so interesting. Man... I'm not sharp enough right now. I love your questions and I feel privileged to talk with people like you.

      @@onedoorfilms I laughed, but you're a bit of a Nimrod, Nimrod ;) You can't expect to pick up enough about something as seemingly unlikely, and intricately encrypted (if true) as this, from a video this short, and make a determination either way. Effort & persistence brings results and all that.
      Speaking more generally, once you've been at this long enough, you start to build a bigger & bigger database of knowledge about specific codes, common types, methods, locations of codes, key information & types of coded information, alternate meanings of certain words, phrases, symbols, numbers, colours and so on. For example almost right off the bat the 12/13 part of 12/13/14 stands out to me as something meaningful or potentially meaningful, here, easier if I explain with a few bullet points:
      • 12 disciples & jesus
      • 12 months in 1 year
      • 12 star signs in 1 year (or 12 signs & the sun)
      • 12 tribes of Israel (12 tribes + 1 country)
      • 12 sons of Jacob
      • 12 knights of the round table
      • 12 numbers on a clock face
      • 12 olympians in ancient greece
      • 12 labours of hercules
      i.e. 12+1 or 12/13, depending on how you classify it.
      As far as 14 goes, I've got a tab on my Codes spreadsheet for double-barrelled Gs or GGs or GG77 codes (e.g. Gary Gygax, Germaine Greer, Golden Gate, Gary Glitter, Greta Garbo, Garden of Gethsemene, Grunch of Giants, Guardians of the Galaxy, Great Gatsby, Good Game, Get Good, Golden Globes, & on and on). So what? Well G is the 7th letter of the alphabet, ergo GG = 77 = 14. So that's a reference to 14, again right off the bat. Doesn't necerssarily mean much, just demonstrating the difference between a totally uninformed yet certain (contrary) opinion (yours) vs a relatively well informed & somewhat certain (pro) opinion (mine). Here I'll chuck in another tidbit for ya for free: in the _GormenGhast_ series of novels, by Mervyn Peake, the main protagonist is Titus Groan, the 77th Earl of Groan... *_GASP!_* Well, not really...just trying to show you how to build evidence, the boring, methodical way...not saying it's anything, but how would you know either way if you were *_totally uninformed yet certain to the contrary?_*
      Anyway that's two breadcrumbs and the m.o. to dig them up & compare them, fill your boots & start informing your a$$ if you want, might see you down a rabbit hole one day if you do, or not; either way, peace my friend ;)
      PS: Seriously once more, I've got a funny feeling there's another, darker meaning to the word _heart,_ I shoulda looked into it by now but haven't. Discovering the hidden meaning of _"tears"_ was enough to put me off decoding any more of that family of codewords (I've got a few more) - there's some sickos out there :( *_Tears_* www.kabbalah.info/eng/content/view/frame/86730?/eng/content/view/full/86730&main

    stanley kubrick
    bridges the gap between 12 and 14
    with EYES WIDE SHUT.
    His thirteenth film.
    His twelfth? twelveth? twelvefth? film with only letters in the title,
    and his first film with 12 letters in the title.
    does this spoil the movie?
    I havent seen it.

    It seems that the music (probably not the choice of pieces themselves, but at least their placing against the pictures) was taken care of AFTER Kubrick's death: that would ruin most of your claims on that video I'm afraid - unless his team would have carried on with his initial intentions assuming he gave clear instructions on what he wanted (something rather unlikely, considering the fact - described below along with the music anecdote - that key scenes were removed from the final cut (source: illum1nat1i.wordpress.com/2013/04/29/the-missing-cut-scene-from-eyes-wide-shut/)
