The main point is that Lili died by suicide in Venice, Italy, on July 26, 1928 and that Stanley Kubrick was born that exact same day in New York. And that Red cloak is played by Leon Vitali, that had the same birthday : he was born on July 26, 1948. This is part of the study made by French writer Philippe de Vulpillières.

Mesmerising. There's something about these Kubrick-heavy videos that distills the essence of his films down, right down, to just sights and sounds. All the stuff that complicates his films, or distracts from what he's trying to do, like the Stephen King plot points or the narrative conceits, all of that is excised - and you're left with this gliding, swooping, sinister, incredibly elegant sequence.

Spielberg has said many times that he wouldn't have had Roy go on the Mothership and leave his wife and family if he would have made Close Encounters later in life. I've always wanted a sequel where Roy is brought back to Earth and he tries to reconnect with his family. A film could work now with Dreyfuss trying to figure out the crazy and ridiculous world that we live in now. I could see him begging the aliens to get him off this crazy planet and back into the cold and emptiness of space.

This bothers you, huh. I honestly think your imagination on CE3K is pretty cool in some sense. I heard a statement the other day, written by Nicole Kidman for the people at the Venice International Film Festival this year: "The collision of Life and Art is heartbreaking." I don't know, this popped up when I went through your writings. This problem in my view is timeless and repeated through Spielberg's (and Kubrick's) work on and on and on.

Also, apologies if I freaked you out with the collaboration suggestion I posted on a previous video. You didn't answer(you might not have seen it tbf) but I thought it was worth a try. I've been looking for someone with an eye for beautiful visuals and for the kind of elegant free-association of imagery I love so much, for whom I could compose music, and then release it online. You have taste in films too. I have a vague memory of a conversation in a comment thread of yours a while back, where I was quite pretentious and garrulous, and rambled on and on about the creative process, and you attempted to explain how you come up with your videos. And a few months later I thought 'he/she/they were interesting, and their videos are stunning, so let me at least reach out.'. Anyway, there's your explanation for the sudden, out-of-the-blue comment I left on another video. It must've seemed a bit...I don't know. I don't think these things through that much before I do them, I just do them. Cheers, I do genuinely think these videos should have many times more views. They're gorgeous. And, frustratingly for me, the music's always perfectly chosen. So it's not like I can make the argument that 'well, your videos look good, but damn the music is _rubbish_ and you need someone else's songs playing over them.'. The music is always spot-on. Still, I think it could be very interesting to collab if you ever feel like it. Have a nice day, and I'll stop typing now, and will probably delete this reply later so it's not on show for everyone in embarrassing fashion.

@stepha5926 right, the old "they are actors after all." Many ppl forget that. Keitel is acting in this very interview. BUT. Many directors say that it's more about casting than acting. Get somebody who already has the look and the persona you're going for for the character. Say action and they can be themselves in front of the camera, you never have to direct. Of course Kubrick was much much much to nth degree more detailed than this, but it's true to a point with any production. Kubrick needed somebody who was a little dead inside. Doing that many takes weeds out the ones who have life in their eyes, or kills it. I think that's kind of what he was going for in a way.

So much to say. What movie was the opening from and the last shot. That's the only 1 I can't place. I'm pretty sure the black and white is Fellini. Loved that u got Close Encounters in. Saw it when I was 11 and it was my favorite movie well into my mid to late 20s. I thought maybe you'd use my favorite scene. It's small but completely encapsulated how I felt then but didn't know it and unfortunately feel now even more. There's a scene I think after he's built his mud sculpture but before he rips off the tip to reveal Devils Tower. His family has left and he is looking out the window at his neighbors living their normal everyday lives cutting the grass and being normal. As a kid that hit me hard. It was like other people look at normal banal life and don't understand. That was and is me most of the time. Thanks for sharing your answer to why u took so much time off. I didn't expect an answer that detailed. Thank u. I've had my troubles too. I'm disabled with pretty horrible neuropathy. I can still walk but from the waist down it feels like I have heavy weights holding me down. If you've ever worn ski boots or very heavy boots that's what my feet feel like. I had a tumor wrapped around my upper spin in that was removed in 2016. I started feeling the symptoms in late 2015 but it took 5 months later to figure out what was wrong with me. By that time I could barely walk and was falling down alot. The tumor was benign but when I saw the scans it looked like I had a damn Alien ready to explode outta my back. I had complications in recovery. A fall led to being put on a blood thinner that I was allergic to and a ruptured ulcer that required doctors slicing me open and then a bowl tear surgery. After being laid out for 5 or so weeks heavily medicated I came out basically paralyzed. It took me over 13 months in rehab to be able to leave. Because of the peripheral neuropathy I am constantly in pain with constant constipation and pain in my lower extremities and my upper back where I had the initial surgery. I can walk although it feels like I'm on stilts. So I can go to the store and get around my ground level apartment. Stairs are always shaky at best. At the same time I was going through my ordeal my girlfriend of 25 years was going through lung cancer. We were actually in the same hospital together. She initially recovers buy within a few months the cancer was back and early Jan 2017 she passed. I lost my girl, home and job. Within a few years an Aunt, Mom and Uncle who I grew very close to during my recovery. He would pick my up in rehab and every 3 or so weeks go the movies and get something to eat. This was when I could get around with a walker. I rarely use a cane and joke that I look a whole lot better than I feel. I have a sister but she lives a state away and she's 13 years older and we were never close. My girlfriend had a daughter from her 1st marriage and she has a husband and little boy. Although we're not blood he calls me Pop and he's my grandson truly. I see them every month or so. I would love to play with him but I can't anymore. The pain is just too great. Movies have always been important to me and most of my references to life and how I feel I connect to movies. I see 4 or so movies a month. Some months like now maybe up to 8. Horror is just exceptional. Oddity was really goof and Longlegs is my favorite movie of 2024. I've seen it twice and will probably see at least 2 maybe 2 more times. UA-cam is where I spend most of my time now and it's just rabbit holes galore with all the time I've got. Your channel is one I'm so happy I found. Thanks again and sorry for droning on. Bit of a therapy session for me. Thanks, Jeff

For what it's worth, I saw some (very simplified) similarities between your problems to walk around and my 'learning to walk again' recovery process, although that's some time ago. It also showed me that their are real people behind the accounts. Also, I feel I cannot reply in a proper way, because I'm on vacation, but I had to reply to this. And yes, I think movies, as you say, have a certain quality, that give you the possibility to relate to it in a most personal way. Again, thank you for the share. Most appreciated.

Only to respond to what movie was the opening from and the last shot. You mean the first used shot? That's from Eraserhead. The last shot is Blue Velvet. Btw, what you said about "therapy" stuck with me. It says a lot. Thanks.

Thanks for getting in touch. It's funny but yesterday I was gonna inquire as to when u were going to put something new up. I've really missed your vids. I've tried actual therapy several times but they've never worked. I never get to what's wrong and typically just have a conversation about movies really. The last time I tried after my life and body fell apart I didn't like the therapist. She came off like a snooty bitch to me. I was and still am perplexed at how events I actually see are described in the news as the literal opposite. The joke is Trump broke it all in someway it's his greatest accomplishment. He revealed the Left are authoritarian fascists the Right are Rino do nothing get alongs and the media gaslights us on everything either lying or just hiding stories. It's gotten me to the point where even historians are gaslighting and lying on current historical events. So if there can't be widespread agreement on the Trump near assassination and that he was shot when u have Wray the FBI head who under testimony state that he didn't know if Trump was shot how is any historical event to be trusted that it was presented truthfully. I love history but now I kinda refer to it as historical fiction. If I didn't literally experience it how the hell do I know it happened. Sorry for the tangent. I've read and have watched several interviews saying therapy isn't very helpful but just keeps people bemoaning their lives and not living it. It's the true problem with every generation after GenX imo. Also, therapy is great for the industry in that you're never well enough to stop. In these articles and vids. doctors say that the old adage of just get over it or the sports axiom.of rub some dirt on it and get back in the game is far better that rehashing your Mommy issues or playground bully problems. Again, sorry for the free flow of shite. Guess u can see hoe this is kinda my therapy. One question I hope you'll answer for me about this vid. Who is the little girl in the thumbnail and what movie is it from. The vid has her early in the vid walking thru a church. That's what I was questioning. Where is that from. Thanks again for letting me lie down on your couch and please upload something soon. I miss your work. Take care,Jeff

@@jeffreysmith694 Thanks once again for your writings, it always has a nice cadence and blended very much to the point. I see what you mean, as far as I can see. About the girl in the video. That's from the musicvideo "Hey Boy Hey Girl" from "The Chemical Brothers". About new activities, I rather never speak about that (not that you asked but anyways) , like in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" , they say something like: never talk about it, cause it brings bad luck. All the best.

Great use of Close Encounters and Carey Guffey who Stanley wanted for the part of Danny in The Shining but his parents wouldn't let him do it because it was a horror movie.

@@somethingaboutthemovies5116 Never thought I'd give u some Kubrick knowledge that u didn't know already. That u connected Close Encounters and used Carey Guffey was just kismet I guess. In hindsight I'm so glad Kubrick used Danny Lloyd instead. He worked so well because he was an unknown. If Carey were used instead all u would think about would be Close Encounters and it would have taken the audience out of the movie imo.

@@jeffreysmith694 I don't think I know that much about Kubrick. I'm attracted to his makings. And then the trouble starts. Btw, where could I find the source about the relationship between Guffey and The Shining, as you said. This thing completely escaped me.

I@@somethingaboutthemovies5116 More than likely I saw a UA-cam clip on it. I just googled Cary Guffey and The Shining and got several articles on it so it's not something new. He was the 1st choice of Kubrick but his parents found the source material too questionable so Kubrick than had a country wide search for Danny Torrance. One of the articles was interesting. It had the recommendations that King had for the movie and how he was so upset with who Kubrick wanted to cast. King had Wendy as a blonde cheerleader type and u couldn't get any more polar opposite than that with Duvall. Nicholson was the 1st choice for Jack but Robin Williams and even Harrison Ford were Kubrick's picks. King had a suggestion of Jon Voight for Jack and that would have been an interesting choice imo. One of my favorite bits of trivia for The Shining is the way Kubrick used the VW Bug to put King in his place. In the book the car is red but in the movie it was a pale yellow. When Scatman is driving through the blizzard he can be viewed passing an accident in the snow. It was a semi truck jackknifed and overturned crushing a red VW Bug underneath it. It was a subtle not so subtle message to King to just stfu. Yes, Stephen u wrote the book but this is the movie and it's Kubrick's vision and not yours. I always have loved that and I lmao whenever I get to that part in the movie. It took me a while to completely warm to your site. At first I was hit or miss with it. Either I got what u were doing or was just confused. I has to learn to just groove with it and enjoy it for what it was. I have to say I'm probably 50/50 with understanding your intent but I'm never bored and visually they are all quite interesting. I gotta stop 💋 your ass so much. I tend to do it at the conclusion of most of my replies to u. As always looking forward to whatever comes out of that head of yours dealing with the Master.

@@jeffreysmith694 Thanks for your answer again. I just looked it up regarding Cary Guffey and The Shining and it is indeed on Wikipedia, which I think is a reliable source, so thanks again for sharing this connection. It's interesting because CE3K appears to be a Kubrick favorite. I never heard Kubrick himself say it. By the way, it's strange that you mentioned Wendy on the day she died. I read a short article yesterday about her and in particular The Shining was mentioned a lot and (of course) the way Kubrick dealt with her. It did something to me. And then I really start thinking about what priorities you have when you make a film. Would I go that far if I were to direct a film? No. Do you happen to have any thoughts on that?
