It's odd, 3:27 he acknowledges that it was likely a test of Rory's dedication, but then at 9:05 he seems to forget that the Doctor didn't mean what was said. Maybe it was silly/hawty in the context of Rory still functioning while the other Autons had already shut down, already showing he was worthy, changing his interpretation of the line?

The first half is beyond even CinemaSins level of inattentiveness and mistaken conjecture ironically used to knock the plot: Rory and crew remained unfrozen because they were repeatedly said to be "at centre of the explosion..the last light to go out", not because of "the power of memory ", and the Doctor was testing Rory if he was truly human, not whether he was "truly dedicated to her", as for asking for "just one line" explaining the Autons longevity, it was thoroughly explained, and then some, in the dialogue Harry even refers to!

Watching your reviews just depresses me. You clearly have such bias for the Russell era it's actually sad. You gave Journey's End a glowing review despite the fact that it's embarrassing, and yet this finale gets a 4/10? I'm done with these videos

  • @Timelord6661
    @Timelord6661 3 роки тому +8

I kinda feel like aspects of this review are in bad faith and kinda biased to an RTD era fans perspective. Feels like you're kinda trying to miss the point of the episode in some places.
I feel like you've taken story choices and writing approach and decided it was something bad e.g. your point about Rory is a little redundant and reaching, I don't feel like the audiences hands needed to be held about Rory's long life span given we know that an auton is just an animated object given life by an alien presence the plastic degrades argument is more than enough of a reason to justify its lack of direct explanation.
It doesn't hand hold the audience which to my mind is more of a strength to the story than a weakness. You've taken the intended meaning of the winding up Rory scene as a "maybe" despite missing the point that the Doctor outright told Rory earlier that because he's a real construct from Amy's life he like her could break his conditioning and that's why he wasn't turning to stone, that's why the Doctor was trying to get under his skin even saying "Welcome back Rory Williams" afterwards, he was trying to break his conditioning to prevent that change to stone.
I honestly don't understand what a benefit adding a direct explanation would have? It was pretty clear to me.
Comparing it to the Last of the Timelord's ending is also unfair, that was objectively bad wishy washy sci fi writing, the ending to the Big Bang is more akin to a classic Star Trek resolution where it is a little outlandish in it's stretching of sci fi concepts but works as an analogy by comparing it to something simple and scientific, rebooting the universe while fantastical does still have a form of internal logic (like restoring a back up on a PC).
While you don't actually understand the internal logic of how a satellite network only designed to submit subliminal messages managed to physically deage a character and make them fly, these are not the same things and I feel its a little disingenuous to make that comparison.
I don't agree with your assessment of lack of open ended explanations, I think it shows signs of a long term plan while I agree it doesn't bode well in later stories I feel like that shouldn't really bleed into and isn't even really relevant to the direct criticisms here, there were loose ends in RTD's run, they just weren't emphasised as strongly, that's a style choice and it's fine to disagree with it but that disagreement in of itself is a biased criticism.
I do agree with your Pandorica Opens review and I guess it's a product of me not really seeing the RTD in the rose tinted glasses a lot of the fans who also grew up with it see it as.

In this respect I would also compare it to WEAT/TDF - where the logic behind the lifts is pretty much "whatever the writers need for the plot point to work" and therefore massively inconsistent throughout the episodes, but it's easy enough to ignore when you are actually watching it.

No astral navigation, so advancements in naval technology and exploration would have been slower and more unreliable, which would have knock on effects for most of the colonial powers of the 15th century, like the over expansion of the British, French and Spanish Empires into America. And that’s it! Series 5 in the bag. It’s been a rocky ride and it definitely doesn’t live up to the hype. For the longest time I wondered why I lost interest in the show at this stage in its progression. Now, after a good hard look at it over the past seven months I think it’s fair to say that the trajectory of “Just wait and find out in a later season” isn’t the model that made the show so successful between 2005-2010. I genuinely don’t think I will ever watch this series ever again. As mentioned in a certain review of Orphan 55, I will be reviewing other things in the next month or two just to detox and reclaim my sanity. If Series 13 suddenly drops I will no doubt make videos on it for the views (that’s right you bloody sell out) but I think I will pick up Series 6 again at a later date unless I manage to land a sponsor for them.

In fact - River’s quick summary about all this is going to wrap up “we all end up back where we belong with no memory of this” sums up my problem with the entire Moffat era. He sacrifices the character development and relationships from the Davies era for endless mind-blowing plot twists and impossible situations that all get wrapped up with an unsatisfying deus ex machina. Hey ho, at least he had big ideas even if they didn’t amount to much, unlike Chibnall...

I've never understood the line; "I think I'll skip the rest of the rewind." Because does that mean all incarnations of The Doctor would never have existed? That leaves to the question to how there's still an Earth left for Amy and Rory to have a wedding on. It's so confusing for me.
Furthermore about that River Vs a Dalek; The Dalek says Mercy which in Peter Capaldi's incarnation said The Daleks shouldn't know the word Mercy and yet here we are hearing a Dalek say Mercy before that plothole appears in Series 9.
Lastly, the Doctor's line about Amy not being important was to test Rory. Stone or not, The Doctor needed to make sure he was still more Human than Auton. Hence why he shouts; "Welcome back, Rory Williams." After Rory gives the Doctor a massive clobber in the face.

This was the beginning of me really not enjoying Doctor Who as much as I wanted to. Great cast, but Steven Moffat seems to have 17 different ideas that he wants to shove into every episode and by hook or crook he would get them in there. This went on to the next season, where he just kept piling ideas on top of ideas. Including the moment where we had a melting baby. Because, I guess, we needed a melting baby in Doctor Who. I didn't fully mentally get back back into Doctor Who (although I did watch it) all that "River is Evil" / "Hitler is on Doctor Who" / etc. etc. episodes were over and we got back to one-off episodes.

The complete absence of Mels - purportedly Amy's best friend - at the wedding was odd. Almost as if Moffat hadn't come up with her yet whilst writing this ep. It would have been cool for River to have passed her briefly, given an odd little frown, and then moved on...

I thought it was a very underwhelming season finale too. You're absolutely right about cancelling death being a poor writing decision. Characters dying have to matter otherwise any sense of danger and jeopardy is gone.
It's hard to really believe any of the events happen in universe, because in a way they don't. They happened in some different universe that never existed. You might as well have just had Amy wake up and say "it was all a dream".
Best things in this season aren't the long motifs (crack in time, the silence, pandorica) but the characters and the relationships. At least the finale had conclusions for them
