Back to uni dorms after 10 years of nothing but healthy home cooking. Came across this channel whilst looking for supermarket ready meals reviews 😃 and absolutely enjoyed these mini series so decided to binge watch them all. Also enjoying Basil so much. Reminds me of my cat whom I had to leave at my mom’s for one whole year.
There is a "Grade B" maple syrup, though. It's not just marketing. Or at least, that used to be true. Somewhat recently Grade B got renamed to "Grade A, Dark and Robust". There was a "Grade C", too. But that got rebranded as "Grade A, Very Dark and Strong. Because gods forbid anything not be "Grade A".
Maple syrup is serious business, apparently. I remember a few years ago they cracked a maple syrup heist in Canada, where thieves took the barrels of syrup, drained them into new containers, refilled the barrels with water, and returned the barrels to storage. They ended up stealing what amounted to around $20 million in syrup. It might still be the biggest theft in Canadian history.
So do you think you'll be going Aldi more often after this week on (or did you use to go anyway?), I think pretty highly of Aldi, sure there's some crap but there's also some true gems there!
watched day 2, 3 and 4 now and I am super jealous of the amazing stuff you have at ALDI over there... german ALDI selection is different and I'd love to have some of the products!
Top Tip, Spray Basil's new bed / hangout with cat nip , he'll soon move in to it. He just doesn't like the smell at the moment (my vet told me this and it does work).
Poundland now do frozen and chilled food ... try week on their food! For me Aldi is my usual shopping place (they do sell veg by the way!! 🤣) so it's just a supermarket- you might need to be creative with pound land.
I have a feeling that watching Mike try to make American pancakes from scratch could be a very entertaining video. It's not hard, but there's a learning curve on "when to flip"
Disagree about the bacon. Grill it till the fat melts and it gets crispy, but not overdone (George foreman type grill does an excellent job) But it’s a matter of personal taste isn’t it? Your breakfast looks somewhat like a canadian breakfast, although I think they prefer herby farmhouse sausage with their pancakes. Plus definitely buy pure Canadian maple syrup. It makes the breakfast!
I've never got on with the idea of maple syrup on bacon. Much like how all caramel is now salted... Anyway, Mike slagging off British pancakes makes me want some. And I'm 9 months pregnant so I might just have to make some tonight...
Aldi's is just Walmart with competent employees and without 'the people of Walmart' If you really want a challenge try a week on a rundown downtown Walmart. Forget about the food the challenge would be to come out alive and without Hepatitis.
Try the Curried Chicken Balls - its a frozen food from Alid near Chicken nuggets and stuff. I never go to Aldi but went once about a month ago and I bought them and they were really nice, crispy outside and juice chicken with a mild curry flavour. I ate them with McDonalds sweet curry sauce.
cmon basil make the effort son looks like a lovely cat den you could get the boys round to check out your crib thise kebabs looked bloody lovely sod it im off to aldi 😂😂😂😂
By looking at all the different supermarkets, fast food drive thrus, and the zoo Mike goes to - it's only a matter of time before someone triangulates his position and shares the address, so we can all camp out on his lawn and build golden idols of Basil in worship.
Ham hocks are the end of the pig's legs just before the foot. Not really that much meat on them, but they're great for adding a nice pork flavor to things when slow cooked. They're pretty common to add to black-eyed peas here in the U.S. south, for example.
Yeah there are many varieties of bacon, back, middle and streaky are the main ones which come to mind, but Americans seem to think that only streaky bacon exists.
I assume someone has mentioned this already but that middle aisle is frequently called (by store employees and customers alike) the "Aisle of Shame", abbreviated "AoS"
Mike - hey, Basil, we've got you a brand new expensive habitat for you to enjoy from the Aldi central aisle. Basil- no, what you've got me is a felt chimenea. Have you turned into a Nazi overnight thanks to shopping at Aldi?
Yeah we have that to, we call it streaky bacon and it is one of several varieties of bacon as well as back bacon which is probably what Mike was using.
JN D well people like it and obviously want to know his opinion, if you have a problem with it click off and watch something else instead of being an arse here 👍
Hilarious that they have the most useless device in the world dedicated specifically to making soup of all things and they don't eat soup. And when they do it's usually out of a package anyway.
Why is it that when you go to Aldi with the missus, while you go to get food & drink which is why you went, she’s pis@ed off to the middle Isle to raid the special buys buying crap you don’t need! 🙄🤷♂️
OK, sit down children we are going to learn about grades of maple syrup... Are you sitting comfortably.. Good. There are according to my Canadian friend 3 grades of the stuff, grade A is harvested early in the season, is light in colour and sweet and not very dense, very similar to corn syrup. Grade B is medium brown/gold in colour, slightly thicker in texture than A and slightly more flavoursome, also not quite as sweet. Grade C is very dark, very dense and full bodied. Grade C is the healthiest of the 3 for you as it contains more minerals and isn't as sugary. The rumour is that the syrup that gets exported to the US is not as good quality as the exports to the rest of the world as they tend to add corn syrup to it for profit margins... This may not be true, I am only relaying what my Canadian friend told me.
I've been a subscriber for years and enjoy your content, but I have to finally ask: You do know your video quality is absolutely horrid right? Way over-compressed, digitized, artifacts, dull, soft. Do you see that? I've had cheap burner prepaid smartphones that shoot better video than this out of the box - so I doubt it's your camera. Must be your import/transcode settings or something.
@@jamesdryan In 2020 you really have to try to make video look this bad. I'm really curious as to what he's doing to make it look so awful. Even a cheap smartphone ran through any modern video editor - even "free" versions like iMovie on the default settings would look much better than this. To make video look this bad, I think I'd have to take the output of the editor and run it through mpegstreamclip and target like a ~50MB file size or something. It's just bad.
It doesn't really surprise me that the brits don't like crispy bacon, most everything they eat is mushy and soft. Beans, mushy peas, 49857563 puddings, curry, yorkshires, all nursing home textures lmaoooo.
When you were “ppssttting” at Basil my cat looked up 😁
Mike: we're going to get rid of the box!
Basil: I'm going to end you, Michael.

@@doryna_sira As a Canadian I can tell you we take our Maple Syrup *_VERY_* seriously...
As a Canadian, I smiled when I saw you had real maple syrup :)
Basil resisting the cat cave on stilts is the energy we all need 😂😂
Great Aldi week! Good food for you and good info for us.
"Basil! Basil! We're gonna get rid of the box :'(" *wakes up briefly from permasleep, goes back to sleep*
Why isn't Basil ruining your shot in the mornings now? That box has changed him.
So do you think you'll be going Aldi more often after this week on (or did you use to go anyway?), I think pretty highly of Aldi, sure there's some crap but there's also some true gems there!
I could actually watch these kindof videos of yours all day 😂 xx
what does my usa aldi not have all this good stuff.
You neglected to empower breakfast by spreading butter on the pancakes.

I agree. Basil is tne real star of this channel. X

American bacon, good job it wasn't Canadian ham....already providing the cheese!! Eat,eat,eat,eat,eat...Mmm!!
I began this week interested in what foods will be like, now I just need to know if basil likes his bed!!
Ham haugh is basically trotter/leg.
The cheap Aldi Coke when its stone cold from the fridge is actually pretty good. Warm its vile.
Bacon pancakes, makin' bacon pancakes,
Take some bacon and I'll put it in a pancake,
Bacon pancakes, that's what it's gonna make,
Bacon pancaaake!
Love your profile pic

There is such as thing as too much bread. I thought the giant Lebanese flat bread was a good deal, by day 4 I wanted to frisbee it out the window
Anyone else dissapointed with mike's syrup pouring abilities
We got our cats a cute pineapple igloo hidey hole from the middle aisle. It was just too adorable not to.
Do they use it?
@@nathansmith6914 they do, apparently they are less particular than Basil 😂
So far, the only crossover item with US Aldi, beside fresh chicken, is the maple syrup and frozen pancakes, but here the package has 24.
Of course it does. Ha ha ha. That's way too much!
@@CookieTowerDefence 4 individual packs. Use them as you need them. Nothing wrong with that.

Hi Mike. Would it be possible for you to tell us how much the items cost ? That would be great !
Where's the moaning I signed up for? I feel robbed! ;)
I’m guessing you gonna start shopping at ALDI
What's a HALAPEENO though?
Chez Basil....Will he like it? Will he appreciate it? NO...I want my box.😿
Yeah typical cat lol
really enjoyed viral so im excited to hear you're working on another novel!

How do Americans have their bacon ?
Aldi's is just Walmart with competent employees and without 'the people of Walmart'

He did a week on ASDA. I think that's as close to Walmart there is in UK?
@@MatsJPB ASDA is owned by Walmart but the stores are very different, having been to both.
@@MatsJPB I know, but nothing beats the horrors of 'the people of walmart'
No Wal-Mart in the UK. Poundland do chilled and frozen food now... could try a week on that!
He could do a week on heron foods or the local one stop.
all cats need around 10 different bed so they can ignore than and sleep in cardboard boxes or the floor .... basil needs more beds XD
Mike: "Get in there, it's cozy as hell"
Basil: "Hell is not supposed to be cozy, not going there"

I mean, it's what bacon should look like because.. Well, it's bacon! Americans can say whatever they like, but they're wrong!
@bigevilworldwide1 are you American? If so, see above.. 🤣
@bigevilworldwide1 streaky bacon is what Americans call bacon. They call this kind of bacon, ham.
