  • The Department of Earth and Climate Science at IISER Pune hosted a meeting of groups and individuals involved in citizen science in and around the Pune district. The aim was to provide a platform for citizen scientists to network with each other and with scientists from academic institutions to help foster the growth and impact of citizen science initiatives in the Pune region.
Abstract: When Jeevitnadi started working on Urban rivers, we realized that there is huge amount of scientific information not available in public domain. The available information is too scientific with technical words, which again is not understood well by common people. eg - research on water hyacinth which is a major concern. Impacts of various pollutants on water bodies. River ecosystem ecological processes, characteristics & functions etc are not taught in schools or colleges even if they are part of EVS school curriculum. So we tried to find the root causes. After understanding the root causes we realized that we need to create aware citizen's groups who will in turn create a vigilant monitoring, understand various changes happening along the river and river bed, document & create data which could be useful for others working which is available in open source. Now we do a number of projects all under citizen Science groups at different locations.
