I spent a year from 2006-2007 in Japan as an exchange student in Nara and wet to an all girls school in Osaka. I say these 12 things are true! And I have never seen someone walk and eat. Never.
I loved it when George said: "Please be kind to me" and Chris said: "Sorry George that is not how the UK works". I love Chris' sense of humor ... or maybe that was just brutal honesty 😆
definitely got to be a Chris Englund out there somewhere, you got Robert Englund, who played Freddie Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series after all.
I feel like the important thing to note is that Chris has experienced the stark contrast of life in the UK vs living in Japan. People in Japan reacting might disagree, but life in Japan may be all they’ve ever known. In comparison to life in the UK there might very well be a much greater emphasis on not blowing your nose in public or eating while walking that Chris noticed.
Yeah I came here to say this if it wasn't already said. A perfect example is like when they start saying how plenty of people walk while eating, there's a special term for it, and there's like half a dozen places in the country where people sometimes do it without being judged and young people even drink Starbucks while walking. To someone outside of Japan, that perspective is already culture-shock on its own. This guy just demonstrated the textbook definition of the exception that PROVES THE RULE. Like I appreciate when Japanese UA-camrs can step out of their own shoes and say things like "oh is that even more acceptable in other places in other places in the world?" rather than the closed-minded view that within their worldview there's already some walking while eating going on in Japan, so this Englishman doesn't know anything.
As a Brit, I'm more embarrassed when I CAN'T blow my nose in public. Someone actually had a pop at me for it once. I think we find the incessant sniffles more rude and inconsiderate than the actual act of blowing the nose once or twice. Doesn't that piss Japanese people off?
I was also thinking people might be more “harsh” towards a foreign person than a native Japanese person who “breaks the rules” . You’re already under a lot of scrutiny and if you do the “wrong thing” then someone who’s already like 👀 might easily get more annoyed.
It's really easy to miss things about your own culture/language just because it's so natural to you you don't notice it and you may not have compared it to something else before. I used to have a roommate who didn't really speak English, but absolutely insisted to me that in English, our questions ended in a falling tone if there was a 'w' question word in there. I said no way, questions have a rising tone in the end. She made me listen to myself ask me a few questions before I realized she was right😅
Damn man, every video I see by you I just appreciate more and more. Your humour, creativity, self deprecating humour, wit, and overall really well written and produces content..thank you. Already watched it. Very well done and educational, but I can understand how it gets fewer views because YT is often a break from reality where you just want to be entertained.
To late been there already as well as anyone with a brain I bet who it not stupid enough to be drawn away by thumbnails with flagrantly fake expressions of shock and red circles and more red circles or red arrows
I watched the Fukushima video when it was published and not just because I subscribe to the channel. I am genuinely interested in content of this type and I actively seek it out on UA-cam.

He should do a video about 12 things not to do in the UK, directed towards Japanese viewers. In English though, so they get a good taste of the general British attitude to foreign languages. :P

Agree, maybe it doesn't reflect in the views, but mostly spending time on youtube (even vids of chris) leave me with a sense of "shit I could've done something more productive in this time", unless the vids show in-depth stuff or informative things. Like the Fukushima ep, so yeah, make more like those please :)
I think your inside Fukoshima video was amazing. You approached the subject with care and respect, and the way you talked to survivors was so genuine and personable. As much as I am enjoying the current journey across Japan, I still think your Fukoshima video was the best.
I'm sure the only reason that Chris's Fukushima documentary didn't get as many views as other videos is that most people use UA-cam for light entertainment. The people in the comments who watched it all seem to have been very moved by it. Chris's regular content is always entertaining. That documentary is something special, though, that will stay with you for a long time.
Totally agree I loved that video. It definitely gave me some ideas on where to go when we can travel again. We planned to do a few months travelling Japan. Then the Pandemic happend. Although just makes us more excited to go back there now.
OMG that Japanese "mmmm" when they don't approve but they're trying to figure out how to spin it politely LOL. Brings back memories of my time in Japan. And Chris's face while mocking George saying "mmm" killed me, bahahahahaha!!!! And for real... if you have to have a set place to eat and drink while walking in Japan, then, really, you can't eat and drink while walking in Japan lol.
I’ve watch the original, I’ve watched Mrs Eats and George’s reaction, and now I’ve watched his reaction to their reaction of his reacting video. My work here is done.
"Don't bother reacting to a video unless you have an original thought, or point, or perspective" This is exactly why I'm not a fan of most reaction videos or channels. There are a handful of great videos that give helpful insight / information that's not discussed in the original video, but most end up going "haha that's funny" or "no that's wrong" but they never bother explaining why or adding anything. This doesn't only apply to Japanese react videos but a lot of general reaction videos. I remember seeing one reaction video on my recommended feed where the two people reacting didn't say anything except "wow that's crazy" once while chuckling maybe 2-3 times, then ended with "thanks for watching our reaction". I'm glad it was a short reaction video because it was a waste of time. That aside, great video as always Chris!
I also feel it's a bit lazy to just take someone else's video they probably spent weeks on just to react without any real input. As Chris stated if you're going to piggyback on someone else's idea at least put a spin on it to make it worthwile...or just make your own video.
With music video reactions you can really get away with it if you have the charisma, the only guy I watch often misses big details, but he’s energetic, makes good jokes and always has a positive attitude no matter the genre.
@@deet917 I get exactly what you say. I Should make an own UA-cam Channel called, React to Abroad in Japan and react rewatching all videos without adding anything useful.
Don't feel bad Chris, every Japanese UA-camr is contractually obligated to react to Filthy Frank and Uncle Roger, plus one additional creator of their choice. It's an honor that they picked you!
True, I even tried to recommend them to watch Calebcity videos. Most of them don't even finish the "People who think they can speak Japanese just because they watch anime" series.
Been following you on UA-cam for few years, love your originality and humor. I do really think your editing and videography skills have gone up a lot over the years to almost a professional level. Keep up the good work 💪 big fan!
100% think the Japanese perspective on what not to do in Japan is skewed because it's their country. They don't get looked at like they just crapped in the street if they cross at a red or eat while walking, etc. But foreigners occasionally do because we already stand out and so us not following the standards of politeness sticks out too. Whereas a Japanese not following them just looks like someone not overly concerned with the rules, a foreigner not following them is evidence that we are ignorant or impolite by those who want to judge others. Not all Japanese are so eager to judge foreigners of course, but there are scolds in every society.
I thought the same thing--I bet a local has very different experiences than a foreigner, and probably can get away with more without attracting negative attention. And personally, if I want to know what how I should behave as a foreigner in Japan, I'd probably rather hear from a foreigner in Japan.
@@Omar_Al_Seddik I live in Japan... sure, often foreigners get a pass because Japanese are generally tolerant and understand cultural differences. But that is not always the case, and like I said, since Japanese can immediately see you're foreign, some who are less forgiving of faux paus WILL be *more inclined* to judge you. That's why it's important to know what the general expectation is. You can still disregard it as some Japanese occasionally do, but you should do so knowing that you are likely to attract more attention for it and shouldn't expect not to be judged for it. I've gotten the look before and even comments (usually by older Japanese) and the further out of Tokyo you are, the more likely you are to get looks or comments - whether it's because you're not covered up enough or you're being loud on a train.
Every one has their own experience. Full disclosure, I’m Asian American and blended in physically. When I broke those rules, I’m embarrassed about it but Japanese strangers wouldn’t even care once they know I’m a foreigner. It’s not like there is an ethical or righteousness police to arrest you if you break the rules. My obvious foreign friends who were non-Asians would get the stares and reaction but it never became a scene. I asked my Japanese friends and locals about this and they said foreigners are making it a bigger deal than it needs to be. That’s why more Japanese are making “Reaction” video to tell Chris it’s not a big deal.
I was literally stopped by multiple vendors at Asakusa from walking off eating my cone ice cream and taiyakis. Was asked to finish eating at the stall itself and dispose of all packaging at the bin provided.

I don't mind reaction videos; really have no issue with them, but the UA-cam algorithm pushes them waaaaay too much. I see them plastered all over my home page. UA-cam sees I watched a thing so it assumes I'm interested in seeing someone's reaction to that same thing. It's basically the modern day of version of reply girls, minus the cleavage on the thumbnail. I'm all for reaction videos as I do get a kick out of watching people react to my own videos, but the UA-cam higher ups do need to limit the amount of exposure they get. Push content that has effort put into it! Don't reward people for just sticking a camera in front of their face and reacting to someone else's hard work.
omg you were the first person I ever subscribed to, I remember begging my dad to help me set up a gmail account so I could subscribe after your Harry Potter review
That's true overall. Watch a couple of videos on any subject, and suddenly the algorithm hits you with a wall of all of the same type of videos. Really annoying.
For what it's worth, I watched the original video first, and it is actually the video that introduced me to this channel. That I was introduced to Mrs. Eats through her reaction vid just means I credit yours for getting me into the wonderful world of Japan-based UA-cam. I don't usually watch reaction vids TBH, though this is one case where I was actually interested to know what actual Japanese people think. It seems most of them were respectful, in any case.
I'm watching George Japan reacting to Chris England reacting to George Japan reacting to Chris England's 12 Things Not To Do In Japan. When will this madness end?
@@Ludifant I'm currently watching Charles Korea reacting to Snoep Animatie's annoyance at Chris Thornett's comment under Chris England's video predicting George Japan's reaction to Chris England's reaction to George Japan's reaction to Chris England's reaction to George Japan's reaction to Chris England's video, titled "12 Things Not To Do In Japan." So I guess never.
Hey, I really want to be honest, MrsEats actually did good by you. Her channel is part of the reason I got introduced to your channel. And I have loved your channel. I literally binged your videos recently, including ones I had already watched!
I think the fact that every Japanese UA-camr has a different reaction is just proof that Japan is not some totally homogenous unit with ironclad cultural rules of conduct. Even in Japan, everyone's a little different. (I think Chris' list was solid as a general rule of thumb though.)
@Sir Kyushu I'd assume other people assume that japan is very collectivist and the people there never really stand out. Like china but with less cardboard skyscrapers.
yeah, it's like the person above said, many put a thumbnail that makes it look like they're reacting to something awful (not like it's bad, UA-camrs need that clickbait)
One thing I've come to realized when watch many of this Japanese people react is they don't know how other countries do this "DO Not" things. They always assume that all of this "not to do" are done in the same manner Japanese people do. For example Blow your nose - JP react: It's fine if you blow quietly, What Chris mean: People literally blow the nose off in the west. Walk and eat - JP react: There are places that people don't mind it, What Chris mean: People walk and eat all over the countries in the UK.
How I feel about reaction videos is if someone has something valuable to add to the video. Like more information or a perspective that is different, I think they're perfectly fine because that's transformative. I don't like reactors who just sit there and laugh and add nothing. I sit there and laugh at videos, I don't need to see someone else to do exactly what I did but the only difference is they are recording themselves. We all know the types. So I prefer watching experts in a field reacting to a video. Like historians reacting to history, doctors reacting to medical videos etc because they have insights that expand on the points in the video or call out what is wrong and praise what is correct. If someone has absolutely nothing to add to the video, that's not a reaction in my eyes, that's just trying to make easy money off someone else's hard work. Just my opinion of course.
I actually enjoy just watching people laugh to a video because I’m bad at expressing emotions and it feels weirdly liberating seeing someone express the emotions that I’m feeling. But I also understand that from a creator’s perspective these reactors are making easy cash by using a video they worked hard on.
I upload in 720p, I think, or I messed up the settings and its lower, oho well you can still see something, who needs 4k anyway, everybody watches UA-cam on a damn phone anyway...
...I actually was in awe of your reportage on Fukushima. Beyond the beautiful filming and editing and the respectful storytelling, it conveyed how much you truly love the Japanese people. And you managed all that without any of the typical TV production means. The video has definitely showcased your talent as a documentarist. I'll be happy to see more of that (even on the BBC...). Take care!
I think the issue really is that when it comes to on demand media, if faced with a choice between a documentary on a disaster that is likely filled with sad, if uplifting, stories or a video that is going to be goofy and cheerful... most people will probably prefer the 5 minute "x to (not)do in y" since it's short and digestible and fun over the documentary about one of the biggest nuclear disasters in the world. Why depress yourself with such a thing when you could get a quick and cheap laugh out of a British man unwittingly offend people around him with cheerful Brazilian music.
To be honest, I did find you're channel by watching Japanese people react to your "What Not To Do In Japan" video. I'm honestly grateful to them, because without them, I wouldn't have given your videos a chance and ended up subscribing. :) Also, after bingeing most of your videos, I now find it hilarious that Ryotaro was one of the reactors.
There was a retweet by Neil Gaiman this week: "I love and enjoy good critical writing, but I do like to remind them every now and then that, while we can do our job without them, they can't do theirs without us."
In the quote "their job" = making reaction videos and "our job" = making the videos they are reacting too. Reaction videos are a kind of critical writing.
Definitely went to go watch the Fukushima video after this one finished. I, for one, appreciate your production values and the fact that your videos are never click-baity wastes of bandwidth.

What’s funny about this is that George was actually incorrect by telling his audience that you were incorrect about the stuff you said on your video. Perhaps it’s because he’s a native and doesn’t pay attention to those sort of things, but while I was stationed with the Airforce in Japan, I actually encountered all of those things, I got thrown out of a restaurant because I was not native, I was constantly cursed out and told to stop walking and go sit in a bench or a fight of stairs and not eat while walking, and George saying this isn’t true, is a complete lie lol!!! He got tons of replies stating the same thing I just said on his video. In my case it took me about 7 months to be able to read and speak Japanese, and that’s when I realized what I was doing was against their cultural upbringing, so I changed my ways and lived a super dope 2 years over there, and currently am waiting to finish my inactive contract with the Airforce to relocate back to Japan since I loved every second of living there.
One time I requested and hugged a Japanese person who is an idol to me. I was not the only one there who hugged him, but this memory still makes me feel ashamed and keeps me awake at night, even after several years it happened. I just decided that I am better left never ever hugging any humans in my entire life.
I don't think this is an issue, if they have an idol status in foreign countries they are also aware of their habbits, and she they might be uncomfortable but you asked they very much had a chance to deny you. Like george said if they come to us they are also trying to fit in.
Japanese UA-camrs who speak English have probably lived in English speaking countries, so they are used to seeing foreigners doing what Japanese don’t. And actually, most of young people don’t care anything about the manners. The average age of the population in Japan is roughly 50, so if you want to know what typical Japanese think not to do in Japan, you need to ask old people because they love manners and rules. But they speak English little.
Truth. Japanese people in their twenties care absolutely zero for their traditional rules, or even most of their traditional culture. In a few decades Japan will be a very different society.
Chris, i owe George Japan for introducing me to you. You genuinely crack me up! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed binging your vids and having a good laugh. I do agree that George at least was thoughtful in his reaction to your video compared to some others. Plus, he got quite the kick out of that old woman animatedly chastising your friend for not taking off his shoes at the bathhouse, which was pretty funny. XD
I personally love all of your documentaries about Japan. It's an incredible amount of work and I'm sure a lot of people appreciate it (even if the UA-cam algorhithm doesn't). Also, knowing how weird the algorhithm is anyway, maybe they will blow up in views in a couple years. Who knows, maybe the overlords of YT will finally show mercy
It's not surprising to me that easy to digest content does better than hard-hitting sad content. It's not reflective of the quality or importance of Chris' work. For example, it wouldn't matter how good it was, I would never watch a documentary about whaling and dolphin hunting in Japan, it would be too sad for me to handle.
maybe when the next nuclear disaster hits somewhere on earth, the youtube gods will grant him a place in the random suggestions. I mean, that can't take too long right? (I live within 35km of 2 different nuclear plants halp)
Alright. I gotta say it. The swearing is fucking brilliant. I did not expect this channel to have ANY profanity. To the point I just commented on the Orginal video not using any curse words because I thought this was a clean channel but nope! The effortless, casual swearing is amazing and I love it. No censors, No stopping yourself or apologizing just pure English swearing and I love it. Cheers from Canada eh!
I like how not even Japanese ppl agree with each other on what he’s right about... so how the fuck are we as foreigners supposed to know what to do now 😭
This was really good as it shows just how heavily the social norms change depending on which parts of Japan you are in. Really helps to show how different some of the Japanese areas and their culture is.
This video made me laugh so many times. And I love how for a “simple reaction video” you still had to put so much work into it, like the cameo from George or the reacting to a fraud in Japan parts. Just a really good video over all even though it’s all a bit of a joke and also addresses how you feel about react videos.
Megan - yes it 's all a bit of a tongue in cheek joking, but at another level it does address the level of nitpicking about the exclusive "right" way to do things in Japan, which can be draining ...

Hi Tanaka-kun!
Well stated... 👍👍👍🌋
And No VOLCANO stuck in my head still, thanks Chris..
100% agreed. it's a shame he may be inclined not to produce videos like that as often due to the views, but it was such an insightful watch.
I learned a lot after watching that video. There aren't many documentaries that mentions Fukushima as Chris did.

My work here is done.
"Don't bother reacting to a video unless you have an original thought, or point, or perspective"
This is exactly why I'm not a fan of most reaction videos or channels.
That aside, great video as always Chris!
i didnt read the whole thing but amen
You might want to check out Blind Wave. They do the most thought commentary in the reactions of all channels I've watched.
Is always priceless when they watch content made by Georgie.
True, I even tried to recommend them to watch Calebcity videos. Most of them don't even finish the "People who think they can speak Japanese just because they watch anime" series.

Me at start: "I hope George Japan doesn't take these jokes the wrong way."
*George cameos in video*
Me: "Oh, alright then cool!"
Not all Japanese are so eager to judge foreigners of course, but there are scolds in every society.
yeah cant take foreigner opinion
if you cant take other complain, how do you improve your company, your self, country
I thought the same thing--I bet a local has very different experiences than a foreigner, and probably can get away with more without attracting negative attention. And personally, if I want to know what how I should behave as a foreigner in Japan, I'd probably rather hear from a foreigner in Japan.
It actually works the other way around... Foreigners in Japan often receive the "foreigner pass" whenever they do something stupid or unrespectful.
"George is humble he's barely in the frame of his own video" had me chocking on tea 😂 It's okay Chris, they're riding on the tail of your success.

I think the fact that every Japanese UA-camr has a different reaction is just proof that Japan is not some totally homogenous unit with ironclad cultural rules of conduct. Even in Japan, everyone's a little different. (I think Chris' list was solid as a general rule of thumb though.)
At the point that they’re doing UA-cam those people are already outside of the “Japanese norm”
6dm Good point haha
@Sir Kyushu I think you're assuming this is an ethnic thing? And not just meaning homogenous in a more general way?
@Sir Kyushu I'd assume other people assume that japan is very collectivist and the people there never really stand out. Like china but with less cardboard skyscrapers.
@@cooldud7071 if you actually look into China though and its people, they’re not really homogenous
I actually watched a few of these and they seemed to mostly agree with Chris.
Yes but a lot of them had a title that suggested they wouldn't. Or at least the one I saw and got recommended.🤔
yeah, it's like the person above said, many put a thumbnail that makes it look like they're reacting to something awful (not like it's bad, UA-camrs need that clickbait)
One thing I've come to realized when watch many of this Japanese people react is they don't know how other countries do this "DO Not" things. They always assume that all of this "not to do" are done in the same manner Japanese people do.
For example
Blow your nose - JP react: It's fine if you blow quietly, What Chris mean: People literally blow the nose off in the west.
Walk and eat - JP react: There are places that people don't mind it, What Chris mean: People walk and eat all over the countries in the UK.
Then you are part of the problem..

Take care!
So agreed, it was brilliant and powerful.
I came here to say the same. Cheers.

Starting as a British guy kind of helped on that front, didn't it?
"A Fraud in Japan" has had me crackin' up all afternoon.
I just commented the same before I saw this...he saved the best till last 😂
HAHAHA “To be honest your video looks better in 480p!” OMG I almost pissed myself that was hysterical!
English Little? You mean Chris England?
@@firefly618 that's kind of sad
@@justsomeguy4099 Why? Cultures change. Japan is no different. Japan isn’t anything like it was in the 1700, 1800, etc etc.
@@Rokaize if you cant see why on your own then I there is no way I could explain it to you
Chris, i owe George Japan for introducing me to you. XD
Your name XD
I agree he's a fabulous guy
I personally love all of your documentaries about Japan. It's an incredible amount of work and I'm sure a lot of people appreciate it (even if the UA-cam algorhithm doesn't). Also, knowing how weird the algorhithm is anyway, maybe they will blow up in views in a couple years. Who knows, maybe the overlords of YT will finally show mercy
I really loved the Fukushima one, it was so well made and documentary-like.
His documentary style videos are easily netflix level of quality.
maybe when the next nuclear disaster hits somewhere on earth, the youtube gods will grant him a place in the random suggestions. I mean, that can't take too long right? (I live within 35km of 2 different nuclear plants halp)
Blue Agreed. But I don’t think the UA-cam algorithm is hurting him TOO much. (2 million subs) 😆
That frenchman was a delight! Maybe consider having him on the podcast? I'm sure him and Pete would get along swimmingly
Haha most ppl won't even get it
😂 bravo 👏
I like how not even Japanese ppl agree with each other on what he’s right about... so how the fuck are we as foreigners supposed to know what to do now 😭
Haha, definitely seems to be a bit of divide between areas and maybe ages/generations. I guess the most polite option is always the safest one.
Just be polite and go about your day. I go every year with my boyfriend to visit his friends and family, and there isn't much to it. Don't stress
Just be polite and cool, Wei Wuxian
better be safe than sorry and listen to Chris :P
just be polite, and don't bother other people. if there's a "cultural" rule that we break, probably japanese can just understand that we're foreign
they didn't roast him so he roasted himself
As a good British person should do. LOL
I thought for a second that "The Real Frenchman" guy was actually just Chris with a blonde wig doing a goofy accent... come to think of it, I'm actually still not completely convinced it isn't...
It’s not Chris, it’s Pete Donaldson! Still hilarious either way 😆
Too skinny to be Chris lol
Honestly I thought that was Joey until I remember he's an Australian
@@DinosourousRexx Pete Donaldson isn't even a "Real French Man" is he? Lol, I feel like I've heard that name before but I'm not particularly good at remembering people I haven't met IRL.
@@alrightalright4585 Haha I understand. And no he’s not, he’s an English radio DJ who does the Abroad in Japan podcast with Chris and has been in a few of his UA-cam videos as well 😆
'a fraud in japan: destoryed with words and logic' made me cackle
love your attitude and humour. Quality and style will win, so keep going, please
