Perfect timing we’re also heading to the UK for a month in 2 weeks time. We live in Australia (my husband is Australian) and I’m English, I haven’t seen my family for almost 3 years 🥰
I worked at a dry cleaner and to waterproof items, we hung the item outside and sprayed a heavy coat of Scotchguard all over, especially the shoulders, back and arms.
Hi. Have a wonderful trip. I live in England and your wardrobe is fantastic. We have been having hot days here as well. Bring something to cover those! x Was thinking shorts ?
I've just been away for a week. I needed more tops than this for cleanliness if nothing else. In my experience 2 bottoms and 4 tops for the first week, then add a bottom and 1-2 tops second week. After that you only need to add if the weather is likely to change a lot, assuming you can wash your clothes.number of toppers depends on the weather. At least 2 footware in case one gets very wet or breaks and to give your feet a change and footwear chance to air.
I must say that I am DIGGING the Open Wardrobe app 🥰 -- and I did NOT expect to. I got it out of curiosity, but it turned out to be TOO fun. Now that I learn that I can follow YOU, I can't imagine being happier with it! I travel to the UK often (at least once a year, twice if I can afford it) and almost always for at least a month. I don't often talk of being proud of something, but I have to say for myself that I have my packing game down to an art form. Two little, personal travel tips I like sharing: #1 I completely agree with the take on the hat, and one of my favorite travel finds is a packable, straw hat. You just roll it up, and it's adorable. --AND of all places, I found it at Walmart about 10 years ago for $10.😲 I have seen similar ones there since, still for about the same price. #2 This is kinda funny, but another favorite thing to do when I travel (because I have a serious shopping addiction) is to pack as many things as I can that are items I'm about to get rid of. Then throughout the trip, I dispose of them, leaving room to bring home new purchases. I do this with ALL of my undergarments as well as some other items like t-shirts, pajamas, etc. It means little or no time spent laundering. At the end of an evening, it actually feels kinda good tossing something in the trash and not having to give it a thought.😆 --and make room for new, good stuff.🎉
I was thinking the same. Kinda disappointed. Also, how about giving us the sizes of the item you purchased. It helps for reference when ordering. TY for helping us. You do a great job. Enjoy the fam!
England- How lovely, Im sure you will save space for a piece or two while shopping in that edgy chic mecca! ; ) Its fun to seek for unique treasures that you will only find while traveling to replace a commercial item in your wardrobe. Have a wonderful trip!
Also wanted to add that I’ve been loving the open wardrobe app! It helps me to resist always mindlessly shopping for more- I’ll open the app and find inspiration there! Also, it definitely shows me that I have more than enough already 😊
Welcome to England 🙂. Have a lovely time. The weather here at the moment is really mixed. Sunny with cool winds , almost in single figures temperature wise some days, other days really pleasant. But depending on where you are long shorts and an umbrella are recommended. X
Thank you Zena! Yea the day we arrived it was gorgeous! But now seems to be back to chilly and windy. Ah well, it's to be expected this time of year. Still love being here!
Since I have most of my family in Europe, I also go away for 4-6 weeks every year (usually in the autumn) so these packing tips are very helpful! And the best thing about staying with family is that if you want to take any weekend trips, you can just use the carry on. Have a wonderful time!
I love this video and your channel. I wear mostly dresses and skirts. Could you do a dress-oriented capsule wardrobe in a video some time? It’s not always clear how your five steps would work when I don’t wear pants :)
I wear dresses and skirts all the time. I don't even own a pair of pants/trousers (other than a pair of leggings). I consider my wardrobe more of a personal uniform, rather than a capsule. I don't really do the mix and matching. 🌺✈️ Heidi
Best travel capsule video ever Emily, thanks ☺️ I envy your super stylish pared down, immaculate wardrobe. Go on, tell me do you secretly bring old sweats and trainers for when you want to clean the house, go for a run or a walk in the inevitably muddy park? 😉 You don’t want those Comme des Garçons getting damaged 😱
Good hints. Nice to see a little splash of colour! My only suggestion is to take a pashmina or a warmer scarf. Those little ones are minimalist but they will not keep you warm on the plane or if the weather is cool and damp. A black or neutral coloured warmer scarf 🧣 is a lifesaver! Nothing worse than being too cold. The UK will be pleasant but not perhaps warm! Have a good visit!
Wot, no outfit montage?!! Great capsule. You'll be hanging out with your family and still looking more chic than 95% of the rest of the UK!! Also can we place bets on you going home with some oversized cream tailored trousers. Probably from H&M. Can't move for them ATM, in London at least 😁
Hi, I am watching from the UK - it’s true it can be wet, but in May it can also be warm and sunny! I think I’d be tempted to swop the fur lined rubber boots for sandals x
Yea I knew it could go either way. I purchased a cheap pair of black slide sandals when I got there that I'll leave at my In law's for whenever I visit. So I'm sorted now :-)
Just finishing a two week holiday in France and used your method to sort out what to bring. Almost got it exactly right…my black everlane crew was a life saver…great for layering. And the blazer was a game changer for me…so glad I brought one. Should not have brought dresses…too chilly at night. Debated bringing a trench….glad overall that I skipped it…would not have gotten the use from it with the weather we’ve had. So….when I followed your lead…I packed the right stuff. Thanks for all the hints.
Thank you for this. I'm preparing for a one week trip to NYC in November, where I will be receiving an award and also covering stories at the United Nations , my first time to do so. I need to look professional, but then again, I generally livein jeans. This has given me a good template to prep for the trip, and a month in which to do it. I even took notes! Many thanks, Emily. I'm 74 and you're letting me still stay hip.
Only allowed to have 1 wheelie to go in overhead flight cabins for a month long trip through France I learned so much about smart packing and outfit creating. Sample size cosmetics, old lingerie that could be tossed instead of washed. NO clunky tell tale touristy running shoes. Instead, sandals and ballet flats. No Jean's, but cotton tops and cotton skirts, a simple watch a gold stud earrings. All perfect for the hot French summer with no AC.
💙💙💙 fab capsule…if you have chance go to Cirencester, lovely town with lots of fab independents for clothes, accessories and shoes…you would need to buy another suitcase for your return ! Enjoy your trip to England 💙💙💙
I'm so glad you get to visit family. It's so important to stay in touch, especially for little ones. I assume this means you'll be off for a month too, but I selfishly have been dying for you to get to summer! I'm in SoCal and need some tips. It will be here before you know it!
Brand-new subscriber here ...thanks for this video content, which is so helpful for day to day dressing and packing more efficiently! Enjoy your travels! 😊🧳✈️💺❤️
Yay for travelllllll! The best advice I ever got about traveling was to put multiple tags in the luggage * inside the pockets * in case it’s lost because outside tags rip off. I never lost one bag, they were delivered a day later. I wonder how much packing changes as we age? Shoes weigh a lot I learned 😂 I now only bring 1 plain ankle boot. If it’s summer I only bring one light shoe, with winter, I wear the boot, so easy. Also I bring one small change of clothes in my carryon, and makeup is in carryon. I reduce my makeup to mostly dry items, a coverup, powder blush, mascara. When I check in, if rooms don’t have a blow dryer, I request one.
I’m here in Cheltenham , in the middle of a seven week trip! I did pretty well with my packing, left a little room for shopping.😁 Have a wonderful time! I’ll say hi if I spot you out and about.
My Husband and I did two nights in Cheltenham last week while the grandparents watched our son. We love staying there for the hotels, shops and restaurants and then being able to just pop out to the Cotswolds. Lucky you for living there!
That's so helpful big thanks! Would love to hear about your purse/bag choice(s) too, see jewelry pieces and toiletries & makeup etc. things. I think we all have some absolute must-have items to feel like ourselves & some things we cannot downsize too much so would love to hear about those things too. For example for me it is earrings (have to pack minimum 1 pair for every 1-2 days or just too many pairs in general) and faux wedding ring so I feel that I have something suitable for every occasion and for every mood when I travel somewhere.
Such a good video! Open Wardrobe was so helpful to me when we travelled by car for our spring break trip. My carry on suitcase was only half full! (More room for my toiletries, haha!) Curious: do you have a capsule wardrobe for your son? I found when our daughter was younger we needed to bring so many clothes for her because she got things dirty in half a day's wear (laundry wasn't always an option)!! Planning a capsule wardrobe for a child might be an interesting (and challenging?) video for another day! Have a great, wonderful, refreshing, reconnecting time in Engand! May it be all you hope it to be! Many blessings upon you and your family!
Yes, when I shop for my sons clothes I shop with a capsule wardrobe mindset. So pretty much most of his clothes all work together. So it's pretty easy to pack for him. Yes, one of these days I'll maybe do one for children.
Love Love Love this video! Your style sensibility aligns with mine perfectly. Stripes, solids in monochromatic grays, black, navy, olive are my all time favorites. Definitely got some ideas from this video, as I usually do when I watch your channel. Have a fabulous time in the Cotswolds - one of our all-time favorite places to visit.
Leaving soon for 10 weeks in SE Asia, where it will be hard to be edgy chic with temps in the 80s and humidity at about 75%. Plus, I'm traveling with just a carryon. Did it before for 4 months but having trouble this time, maybe because the first two weeks will be an adventurous tour and the last 2 months I'll be on my own needing more resorty wear.
It's easier and more fun to pack for colder/cooler temperatures. Texas heat in the 90's to 105 in summer without looking like a Ho on the Beach circa 1999 (like I could get away with in my early 30's 😢) makes packing so challenging.
My husband is also English, but I'm the one who moved, so I haven't seen my family since December 2019 thanks to the rona. If all goes well I am hopefully going back for two weeks in August. I actually downloaded Open Wardrobe awhile back based on one of your previous videos and have already started to plan my vacation wardrobe on it.
Love these ideas! Thank you. Curious as to why you have the tan/camel colored items in your wardrobe? The color isn’t flattering on you like everything else is. Have you considered a blue-based red or wine color instead?
(Melanie here) Question: What do you do with your trench coat? Do you pack it? (And then does it need to be steamed?) or do you wear it on the plane and fold it up? I am going to England in June and traveling with a trench coat for the first time.
So fabulous! Thank you EW✨The layering black blazer is so key for summer. I’m a 36D bra and medium size- would you get your SS double breasted blazer or the Nili Lotan Diane? Or Everlane ‘80’s? Can’t decide which will be better for bigger chest. Thoughts pls! 🙏🙏🙏✨💓
The SS blazer is definitely tighter fitting in the chest so you'd have to go up a size or two. The Everlane 80's blazer has plenty of breathing room. Haven't tried the NL Diane but if you have the budget go NL...amazing fit and quality.
What will you be wearing as outerwear if you go trampled in the countryside on a grey/misty day? I always find that my trench coat (like yours) can get muddy...
PS I downloaded open wardrobe about a month ago, I had so much fun giving my wardrobe their own fashion show. Lol amusing. However seeing my wardrobe in that format convinced me I really am a teenage boy. Hehe
Can we get some real talk about caring for a capsule wardrobe? I love cashmere sweaters and blazers as much as the next person but I worry about having to launder them frequently.
I definitely didn't delete you. May have been technically glitch or sometimes I've accidentally unsubscribed from channels when trying to hit another button.

“I do not like to travel with baggage. Pun intended.” 😅 Same. I just love your channel and your style.
Thank you so much :-)
I worked at a dry cleaner and to waterproof items, we hung the item outside and sprayed a heavy coat of Scotchguard all over, especially the shoulders, back and arms.
Enjoy England in spring!
This is brilliant! Your reasoning makes so much sense, thank you 🌸🌸🌸
Hi. Have a wonderful trip. I live in England and your wardrobe is fantastic. We have been having hot days here as well. Bring something to cover those! x Was thinking shorts ?
I second this…it’s been quite warm….no promises though haha
I love packing for trips! Traveling is a forced capsule wardrobe. I never thought of packing one pair of bottoms per week. I'll have to try that.
Yea, it's just my little rule of thumb that works. Let me know if it works for you!
I've just been away for a week. I needed more tops than this for cleanliness if nothing else. In my experience 2 bottoms and 4 tops for the first week, then add a bottom and 1-2 tops second week. I live in Dorset UK 🇬🇧 we are set for a little heat wave soon so maybe pop some linen trousers in there just in case 😉 love your videos!
Love your capsule! Although through the whole time I was expecting a montage of the final outfits!
I was thinking the same. Kinda disappointed.

Excited to see what you pick up in England.
Whenever I travel (whenever that was...) I hand wash items along the way or use Fabreze to spray the outside stains.
Wow! Good for you!
Thank you for simplifying the capsule wardrobe planning. Love this
Very good video. Thank you
You're welcome!!!!
Excellent ideas and the clothes look so chic. The new app sounds like fun too.
Thank you! Yes try the app, it is fun!

Love it and u. Keep up great work. Have a safe trip.
Thanks so much!
Are you saying that all 3 of you are fitting into those two bags? That’s nuts! I thought I was good, but this is a whole other level! Safe travels❤️🇨🇦
Yep, all 3! We were able to do it but definitely had to very minimal for each of us.
The other two are in the small bag! 😂
Yay!! Glad to hear you made it back!! Have fun with family!💜

Could u do a lookbook on these pieces
What would you pack for sleepwear? Pajamas, slippers, robe...how many PJs? I would be tempted to take 3-4 pairs like you did with bottoms...
So many great tips, Emily! Love this!!
I travel to see my family in Australia I live in Spain ..I always take too much ..this video is very very useful...thanks.
So glad it is!
I use another app but just downloaded this one and will give it a try. No travel for me but do mini capsules to keep things interesting
Then you'll love it!
It's been warmer than usual, my daughter in Nottingham says
Yea first day was gorgeous. Now gone a bit chilly

Where did you get the boat neck white and black long sleeved tee shirt you are wearing at the opening. Thanks
Everlane crew neck long sleeve. They don't have it anymore :-(
No harness belt?
Do you dry clean or wash and maybe iron your blouses, slacks and jeans?
ty
very helpful
Glad it helped
(Melanie here) Question: What do you do with your trench coat? Do you pack it? (And then does it need to be steamed?) or do you wear it on the plane and fold it up? I am going to England in June and traveling with a trench coat for the first time.
I wear it on the plane. I'll speak more on that as well in next weeks video. :-)

I'll wear the trench, it's a very washable one.
Have you used packing cubes? I’ve thought of buying some but I’m still on the fence.
No matter how hard I try, my clothes never fit in the suit case and I can't find what I need without making a mess.
I’d add one more pair of leggings for lounging. Safe travels my dear.
Great video. How about for your son? (large & small suitcase?) My husband does a great job by himself...better than me...🤷♀️🤷♀️😊
Fab ideas, where in England are you off to? Have fun!
Thank you! The midlands, near the Cotswolds.
The app looks good, but I always want to understand the profit mechanism before submitting to anything "free" 😉
They get their profit from the businesses that will have their clothes featured on the app.
Don't forget your _inf sized suitcase when you go! 🙃
PS I downloaded open wardrobe about a month ago, I had so much fun giving my wardrobe their own fashion show. Lol amusing. However seeing my wardrobe in that format convinced me I really am a teenage boy. Hehe
Haha it is interesting seeing your own wardrobe in that format :-)
I found the app too time consuming. I am a planner. I’ve used a rolling rack. It folds and when I finished it goes under the bed.
Can we get some real talk about caring for a capsule wardrobe? I love cashmere sweaters and blazers as much as the next person but I worry about having to launder them frequently.
🖤
