SHOTA! YAMAMOTO! KURODA! DICE-K! The tradition of Japanese-born pitchers that wear number 18 in MLB!
- During the 1960s, the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball started giving out No. 18 to the ace of the pitching staff.
This influenced many Japanese-born pitchers to wear the number in MLB, including rookies Shota Imanaga and Yoshinobu Yamamoto!

Hisashi Iwakuma is the most underrated
he rlly only had two great years and an unexpected no-hitter, he was a good no.2 for a short period tho
@@LordBurgeryea but for how under the radar he had been with a peanut contract, he is def one of the most underrated. Your two great years BS doesn’t have to do with anything
@@Narodov1 brother im a big iwakuma fan he got me into japanese baseball which i now am obsessed with. im just being real. we remember him better than he was. just look at his bball reference page. he has only two years where his WAR isnt slightly above avg for an MLB SP. those years being his final year where he was rlly meh cause he was out of gas and only started 6 games. and the other being his 2013 season where he looked like a cy young finalist. he was definitely good, but lets not call him underrated is what in arguing. he was paid exactly what he was worth avging about 8mil a year with only two years out of arbitration
Unsung hero of Japan's triumph during 2009 wbc!
Kuroda
Kuroda’s body of work was super impressive, especially at that age.
True. His consistency was something else
Hideo Nomo paved the way for them. It's great to see their splendid performances on the mound all at once, and now I can't wait to see Rouki Sasaki play over there.
He can come and take the number 18 in Boston
Correct. Nomo'a two no-no's showed everyone that Japanese pitchers can be world class.
I love Kuroda
Kenta is my favorite Dodger pitcher. Bro was a menace when they had him come out the bullpen
The number 18 became an ace number in Japan because of Tadashi Wakabayashi, Viktor Stalhin and Jiro Noguchi.
They are all Before World War II legends player.
Originally in Japan, number 18 is a number that has a meaning about a good trick or skill.
Where was Viktor Stalhin from?
@@La8-l8rfrom wikipedia he’s from Russia but defected to Japan at 9. won 303
@@hamahamana Wow I supposed that but It's really surprising known a Russian Baseball player
@@baseball_introduction Yes, actually 十八番 (18番) is a word derived from Kabuki, but it may be one of the reasons why we Japanese people think 18 is a special number, such as the number of the Aces
Wow! All of them have had the same jersey number 18!
18 is considered ace number in Japan!
Ohtani would’ve been 18 but it was already taken. 8 means luck and wealth in most East Asian languages 18 is like a guarantee of luck and wealth 😂
@@charleneo1934 No, in Japan, 8 is not a lucky number. 7 is the number used in "lucky seven".
It is obvous that you are not Japanese.
Also, the reason why Ohtani chose 17 when he joined Angeles was that his original desire was 27, but it was Trout's jersey number, therefore he chose 17 by deducting 10 from 27 to 17.
@@user-yq9xj2nd4eshe’s not Japanese so it’s natural she doesn’t know it.
Dice-K was the best and most underappreciated Japanese pitcher to wear 18. If it wasn’t for him throwing a ridiculous amount of pitches in the Koshien tournament his arm would have held up. 🎲 K ❤️!
Kuroda's performance with the big team Dodgers and Yankees was as good as his performance in Japan, which is still amazing.
kuroda❤❤
Kei Igawa「Don't forget meeeee...」
No, forget him.
18 has been my favorite number since I was a kid, happy to see people doing my number justice lol
Kuroda and Nomo are my favorites!
In Japanese Highschool, 1 is the ace number.
But in the pros, 18 is!
The first Japanese-born pitchers that wears number 18 in MLB is Takashi Kashiwada (NYM), 1997. I wanna watch Kashiwada pitches!
Thanks for referring to Japanese! Much appreciated.
Imanaga said he chose 18 for Ben Zobrist, after looking at Cubs history and also chose to honor him with wearing his number.

Kuroda is the best
Thank you for making this
It’s so horned
Love MLB!!!
Yamamoto is the best of them all. If he can adjust to MLB hitting he could do this for a long time. Simple delivery and only 25. If he can avoid injury he could be the first HOF Japanese pitcher.
Imanaga didn't need to adjust.
@@resmarted 😎
@@resmarted of course he did. If you think he didn't adjust your not very smart or have no confidence in MLB teams couching. He just did it before his first start. Yamamoto didn't do it fast, or at least he miscalculated in his first start. Also Imanaga is old (30) so he's very unlikely to have a HOF career. He also has considerably less talent and that's why his contract reflects that. Also take it easy because he has serious FLY BALL issues that might show your confidence in him lose interest in posting comments and hide in the corner in a month or 2.
Yeah yamamoto has real skill. Can't wait to see what he does in the league. Imanaga looked good against the rockies too. What an exciting time for baseball fans.
@@markk2745 Imanaga pitched 6 shutout innings in his debut. Maybe Yamamoto should adjust before the game next time.
It's a Japanese massage and threat of what's coming to every team when you're facing mid or top Japanese pitchers
Those Japanese pitchers are gold! There are no better players out of Asia than the Japanese.
I love their work ethic, how they’re so cool under pressure, precise play and I loooove their names!
Japanese names: Yamamoto, Kuroda. Imanaga, Matsuzaka, Sasaki… it’s like poetry. 😂
As a Yokohama fan, I am glad that Imanaga is pitching well!
Where is Uehara?
He wore 19
Darvish, Yamamoto, Imanaga, Senga, Kikuchi, Maeda, Matsui, and probably Fujinami and Uwasawa.... Japanese pitchers will dominate the MLB this season!🇯🇵⚾️👏
Fujinami is cheeks
Shintaro Fujinami has problems finding the strike zone consistently (walks too many batters). There's a reason he's starting this year in the minor leagues.
Senga rehabilitation now
Senga from Hawks, Matsui from Eagles, Kikuchi from Lions, Fujinami from Tigers, Yamamoto from Buffalos, Maeda from Carp, Imanaga from BayStars, Darvish (Ohotani) and Uwasawa from Fighters. May come back soon Senga.
Nomo needs to be mentioned. Only pitcher still till this day, obtained a no hitter at coors field.

Same here. Huge fan myself.
Started following him and collecting his cards around 2009-10. Lots of BBM, TTG and Calbee. All back to his rookie year of 2002.
His performance in the 2009 WBC was amazing.
I really wish he would’ve made to the MLB when he was younger.
JAPAN🇯🇵🗾
Hideo Nomo is No. 1.
When former Dodgers pitcher Nomo decided to play in the MLB, most of the Japanese baseball officials and media criticized him. Without his challenge, Tanaka, Kuroda, and Ichiro would not have played in the United States. MLB should be grateful to Nomo.
Uehara🎉
Koji Uehara wore 19 for every team he's pitched for in the MLB (Orioles, Rangers, Red Sox, and Cubs)
@@PackBrewBadgeWI4 I know he wore 19, but is there a backstory behind it?
often wear a number close to 18, such as 19 or 17, if someone on the same team already wears 18.
it does not imply less powerful or second best, just respect for the man who wore it first.
Where df is kei igawa
Let"s go Rendon!!!!!!!
Hisashi Iwakuma was the most consistent pitcher in MLB.
Let's go japanese super star!!!!!!
If you're a manager, give your Japanese players the number 18 to make them feel good.
a swing and a miss
You forgot to include Hideo Nomo, Masahiro Tanaka, Koji Uehara, Kyuji Fujikawa and even Darvish 😅
Imanaga had a great career in Japan, but he did not have an exceptional record, taking mvp and winning awards across the board.Yoshinobu Yamamoto, on the other hand, had an overwhelming performance and won all the awards.I think what I see when I look at players like them is that players who played well in npb do not necessarily play well in mlb and vice versa, it's just a matter of whether mlb baseball suits their style of play or not.
YOSHI❗YOSHI❗YOSHI❗🦖
Nobu Yamamoto?

Yu Darvish...
They literally have Japanese car-ish quality
And the best Japanese pitcher in mlb right now not wearing number 18, Kodai Senga 👻🍴
The guy has a deadly ghost fork that hitters have problems hitting
Not Japanese, but you cant forget chien ming wang. He is essentially forgotten amongst asian players and he was an incredible pitcher.
No one forgot him. He's a legend in his home country. This video is about Japanese players who wore #18. Chien Ming Wang is not Japanese and didn't wear #18.
@@Shyny_Yordy that's why I literally stated it from the beginning lol. Wang is not talked about in America. I'm giving credit to asian players, you triggered weirdo.
Your post is off topic
So does number 18 mean anything in Japan or did they just start giving number 18 to the ace randomly?
Until the World Series includes the Japanese, the winner cannot claim to be the best team in the World. In the WBC, Japan proved that they are the best.
