I'm glad you did a video on this performance. Using the machine head to detune is SO cool musically AND technically. Doing this, bending out past the nut, and using his finger to pry instead of a whammy bar makes him incredibly fun to watch. He's a true showman. Thanks for highlighting his talent!
C.S. Lee also mentioned "My Wife Thinks You're Dead". I never saw either one, but this side-splitting comedian is underrated in that field, too. We just saw his guitar work, which speaks for itself, and he is also a top-notch singer.

Sadly, I'm not surprised at all. Austin is full of super talented musicians who are not paid. You might be surprised to learn that the Vaughn family has almost as much money as W and probably more than (lying) Trump, and if anybody is better than Stevie, or even his brother Jimmy (sure as hell not Jimi) he gets smothered.
I saw him in concert once purely by luck. It was in 2000 and while visiting Austin I happened upon an advertisement indicating that he was playing in a park that day. My wife and I decided to go. It was a fantastic concert!
Junior is a monster on the guit steel and his ease and demeanor on his shows makes them a treasure to see. Another great send up from you, Fil. Watching you watch and admire the performers, shows through on your delivery. You've an excellent channel !
Early 90s. Every Sunday night at the Continental Club on South Congress in Austin. I was there listening to Junior in spite of the fact I had German class at 8am Monday morning. I never learned much German, btw.
I’ve loved junior for over 20 years, seen him over 6 times. But, I have to say all shows were great; except one. I saw him about 11 years ago in Arlington Texas, and he was not feeling it. Yelled t soneone in the audience and ended the show early. I hated seeing it, but he is human and I would be first in line to see him again
Fil, I saw Junior Brown three years ago in Evanston Illinois and I went for a musical ride for two hours, what a performer! He has amazing technique and he can burn on either slide or regular guitar. I saw his special guitar up close and wow! What an extraordinary piece of craftsmanship. Thank you for this analysis.
I’ve come to Jr kind of late, but he’s rapidly becoming one of my favorite guitar players. He is all over that guitar bending, sliding, popping, slapping. He’s quite the player and always surprising. In the middle of a country tune he may break into a rock or reggae riff, whatever. Very original and very innovate. Love his style
I put Junior among my top 39 favorite guitarists. A group that includes guys like Al Dimeola, Zappa, SRV, Segovia, Slash, Santana, Angus Young, Jeff Beck, and Alex Lifeson.
One thing I was surprised the first time I saw Junior Brown live - he was LOUD too. Not used to such clean and loud guitar. He's an amazing player, I think he was using Fender Twins, which are 85 watts. His techniques are a lot more than just shown here. Thanks for putting this one up.
I saw Junior play a free show at a casino, and he had a heavy quilt draped over the front of his amplifier, which was actually placed in front of him near the edge of the stage. I'm not sure if he was protecting the audience from excessive volume or preventing the sound from carrying a hundred and fifty yards out over the casino floor. Anyway, he would have been hearing the sound coming off the back side of the speaker cone!
Excellent commentary. Junior and his wife are now doing shows, just the 2 of them on UA-cam. It's so entertaining watching Junior make every tune exciting. His unique voice deserves mention as well. THX Pegasus !
I've seen Junior Brown in concert a couple of times and he blows me away. One of the things I like to do is watch Tanya Brown, his wife, strum like hell on that dreadnought acoustic.
A moment of love for his amazing wife Tanya Rae Brown. She is a machine on rhythm acoustic, the pinnacle of a neglected art form. She is the rock of the band, without a doubt.
@@wingsofpegasus They are incredibly underrated singers as well. They do duets with them singing the third and 5th notes of the chord between them so your brain provide the root note of the chord and it sounds like they are singing full chords, not intervals. I have run over several their duets many times, and i eventually worked out the magic trick they are playing on us, so brilliantly. Love 'em.
So much fun to watch. Haven't seen Junior Brown in ages. He's in his own lane, cool playing, and his songs are usually very quirky. Thanks for showing this.
See Junior in a bar or small venue- he takes no prisoners. Seriously amazing player live. My favorite moment was the encore where he is total rock n' roll mode, crowd is going nuts, you can't hear yourself think. He comes back on stage with the guit-steel over his head like a trophy and does a Mick Jagger impression in a British accent " People....behave". It was awesome. On the original version of Sugarfoot Rag he goes in and out of Hendrix- "Wind Cries Mary" and a riff from Band of Gypsies. Really cool.
I'm going to see him for the first time in Tomball Tx for the first time. I'm super excited for the show! I picked this one because it is a small venue! I know he will deliver! Musicians like this are one in a million in my opinion.
Hey, thanks for doing Jr. Brown. I suggested a few other clips of his a few weeks ago that featured more of his country stuff but this surf medley is great too. He also plays blues like a monster too, channeling Albert King and other greats. He writes hilarious songs too that he sings with a laconic Ernest Tubb- style baritone. Thanks again for your videos.
Wings of Pegasus Fil thanks so much for all these vids. David Grissom from Austin , Texas has a very unique approach- blues, country, rock all fused together giving him a recognisable sound. Check him out. A great player!
I’ve seen him live 3-4 times once he had Buddy Miles drumming . He’s the real deal his singing his playing his stage presence, he’s doing the surf medley, walk don’t run , sometimes he throws in secret agent man , he’s also used Java by Al Hirt as an intro . He does it all .
@@mr.carter9004 that’s cool I’ve seen Jr a few times , he puts on a great show ,also in the early 90s me and s friend played an open Mike there . Time flys be well my friend
I stumbled upon Junior Brown years ago and became an instant fan. Besides being a top-shelf guitarist, he was a terrific songwriter. Check out “My wife thinks you’re dead.” Hilarious and skillful.
Junior Brown, a tremendous & unique talent! Hard to believe you chose a video of him playing guitar only! His skill on the steel is amazing, particularly his style & in how he so smoothly transitions from one to the other.
Fil!!! My favorite UA-camr! Here I am across the pond Stateside turning a friend onto Junior and here you lay in wait; gotta Love it. It's cool how you keep popping up with my favorite acts; I hope all is well in Jolly England brother! ✌️

I think Junior is one of the most underrated, and unrecognized guitarists in the world. First heard him years ago on NPR doing the instrumental, "Peelin' Taters", been hooked ever since.

Finally! Junior is probably the most underrated guitar god there is. SRV considered him the best in Austin.

Agree!!!
When you listen to Junior, you can hear his influence on SRV.
I saw Junior Brown play at a small, 200 capacity club, it was the most amazing show. Also, the loudest show I've ever heard.
