I’ve been to several Junior Brown shows and he’s always amazing. When he plays, he wants you to hear trains, sirens, trucks and the occasional disgruntled old girlfriend when he plays. He plays with passion and a love for entertaining. I’ll always recommend seeing him live if given a chance.

Same. Never heard of him and a fellow player said Junior was one of his favorite players. At that time, JB had just come out with My Wife Thinks You’re Dead, and had a few other tunes featuring his unique blistering riffs. I was hooked!

Junior calls it a "Guit-Steel" - his original yellow guitsteel (more or less a Tele and an 8 string Lap steel) wired to switch between the two. He usually sets it on a modified stand. Anywho - he is a living legend - an absolute killer. The bending trick... @ 3:18 or so.. if you look( again ) he's previously ghost bended nearly 2 whole steps- you can see the G and D string rock a little bit as be nurses those last few bendy notes

After all, he replaced Dickey when the Allmans fired him, and he found the role hard because Dickey was his hero, but he got to team up with Derek Trucks in front of 20,000 a night playing Allman Brothers with Zambi licks thrown in. Then he moved on to the classic Phil Lesh Quintet for a five year stint that included three years as the Dead's lead guitarist.

    • @gmwPaul
      @gmwPaul 3 роки тому +2

I don't know that he 100% intends to know every note in a show piece like this, but I do know for 100% fact that he *can* play note for note. His parents were classical musicians and he was classical guitar trained, and transferred that to Surf Guitar - which is strongly flamenco oriented. He can totally flaunt the rules so expertly because he knows how to play in total control - and chooses not to.

JB is awesome. The song Michael featured here is a cover version of Jimmy Martin - "Freeborn Man" from 1969 which is in itself well worth a listen. Junior's album "12 shades of Brown" is really great including studio version of "Freeborn Man" and a few tunes that sound more like Johnny Cash than Johnny Cash does. Every song on the album is killer and being English I don't normally relate to country but it's one of my favourite albums. I don't know how I'd not heard of him til about 6 months ago?

Love Junior, got to interview him when I was with NAMM in Nashville. That axe is his mind child he calls a Guitsteel, many songs he switches back and forth. He gets that bite because he leaves the steel finger picks on, as he needs ‘‘em for the lap steel, and no time to take those on and off, that steel on steel is what gives him that bite. He’s a Ernest Tubb singer that also loved Jimmy Hendrix. 🎉

Junior is the total package! He's a brilliant, exceptionally creative player, a terrific entertainer, and he has a very good voice. IF he had been a straight up rocker, he would be famous. But he has a tremendous reverence for old style country music, and yet he's mastered the are of playing Hendrix licks, etc. within a country context, or whatever genre of music he's putting in his blender in any given moment. Probably one reason why his videos feature comedy - as he's hard to market for any one particular genre.

Loved Junior Brown. I remember watching a live concert of his on tv as a little kid in the 90's. I believe we recorded it and would rewatch it on occasion.
Edit: Made this comment right before you said your friend played in Oklahoma. Lol That's where I'm from. Though I'm not close to OKC.

Saw Junior open for Lyle Lovett in Columbus OH in 1993! Had never heard of him but was so impressed with is playing and stage presence that I've been a fan ever since.
Vince Gil oncel introduced him during the CMA awards for his video of "My Wife Thinks You're Dead" as the only guy still playing "real" country music.

Junior Brown is a freak of nature! I saw him about 20 years ago in Kalamazoo Michigan. Holy shit , what a trip. He'd be playin' some Hank Williams thing one second and the next it was total Jimi Hendrix! That Gitsteel is a beast machine. Umm , yeah!
    ✌💀👽🎸🎵🎶
Oh yeah , that's his wife playing acoustic.

Junior is also an amazing straight-ahead player. There are some old accoustic videos of him playing "normal" floating around. Check out "That's Easy For You To Say" and "My Wife Thinks You're Dead."

JR Brown can do things with a guitar most people can only dream off. Love Highway Patrol and the girl on the sign in the field by the big Ol' highway.

Talk about being late to the party...I'm 64 and finally gave up my snobby attitude toward Country Music. So, just recently found Jr Brown, and I am amazed at his skill and showmanship.
Nice job on your presentation, reaction.

I love how this guy reacted to the ‘on the spot’ licks Junior laid down! I’ve seen Junior a couple of times (the last time was with Reverend Horton Heat- see my videos) and he is a consummate showman. ❤️

I love the songs where he switches back and forth to the steel guitar. Just realized this was all guitar, no steel. Awesomeness!
