I love Scythe! We have all the expansions, we are right now starting last episode of Fenris.. so great timing for this video 😂 Scythe is amazing and so diverse, gives so much possibilities of changing the game completely, never ending replayability. And so beautiful! And rules are so easy to remember, I don't have to go back to the rulebook during the game, actually I don't go back at all, it is so clear. We have played as 2 players until now, can't wait to try 4 players. And will try 2p + Automa. And modular board awaits its turn. I have never got so much into the game before - we are playing it for 5 weeks straight. Thank you Jamey for this experience!!
Well, I do like Scythe, and I have found Root, Orleans, Architects of the West Kingdom and Terra Mystica to be quite fun as well, so Jamey’s on to something here.
Scythe is at the top of my list of favorites because of the satisfying accomplishments throughout the game with those BRA, and the tension of maintaining control of hexes and resources, and it’s high replay ability because of its asymmetry. Love this game. Thanks so much for bringing this into our lives.
Scythe is terrific & I also really enjoy Architects, Tapestry & Kemet! I own Near and Far as well as Rurik, but haven't played them yet. I really want to try Dune Imperium, but I'm not allowing myself to buy more games until I get some of my other recent acquisitions played first 😉
I think that you have accomplished something unique with Scythe. You brought a whole world and era into life. Seriously. When i play the game i have a full feeling of the theme. Amazing job!👍
All of these games are either on my Favorite Board Games list or are on top games to play. Great video! I've been wanting to play Scythe since it first came out and final got a chance to play it for the first time this year, instant Top #5 game.
Thank you for this list. The first time I went to my FLGS, the very first game I saw on a table was Scythe and my jaw hit the floor. It was then I realized how awesome board games coule be.
Great list! I think that is the most games I've played from one of your lists (8), and love them all. Really great job formatting the picks to 10 different aspects of the game!
"Terra Mystica was a great inspiration for Scythe" - I haven't played Terra Mystica or Scythe, but Gaiai Project is my favourite game so that's a massive reason for me to look closer at Scythe.
Scythe is in my top 5 games of all time. I absolutely love the depth and additions to this game. I've extremely excited to hear what games you think I might like based on my love of Scythe.
I’ve been into the hobby less than 2 years and haven’t yet tried a Stonemeier game. (But that will soon change as I preordered Red Rising!) I’ve only played light and medium-weight games so far. The asymmetry in Scythe looks intriguing.
Stonemaier Games makes some of the best games both in terms of gameplay and component quality. I can't recommend their games enough to friends and family. If you end up loving Red Rising definitely check out it's inspiration, Fantasy Realms which is fantastic. Fantasy Realms is a lighter game, that plays in about 10-20 minutes, so it's a great option to introduce to your non-gaming friends and family.
i really enjoy scythe. great game that i always enjoy playing. thanx for bringing it to the world. i also enjoy your videos very much. they have a really natural feel to them that i really like.
Two things I love about Scythe that aren’t mentioned: 1) Individually, the mechanics of Scythe are easy to understand. There are several wheels in motion which combine to make a great game. You get to choose which of these wheels to interact with to gain your victory. In this sense, that’s the reason I enjoy Dinosaur Island, as that feels similar, you choose which way you want to achieve victory, do you go for specific goal cards, do you try to build the most exciting dinosaurs, do you build roller coasters? The choice is yours 2) Win or lose, after playing Scythe, I feel as if I have created a story. This is the same way I feel after playing Core Worlds. In Core Worlds, you can look at what planets you’ve conquered, the units under your command and the heroes you’ve recruited, all by looking at your final deck. While Scythe is my favorite game, I do love all of your games, and anxiously await Red Rising to arrive!
Scythe is right behind Magic: The Gathering for my favorite game of all-time. Scythe and Viticulture are two games that will always have me interested in every new Stonemaier release.
I think Scythe has one more feature wich appeals to me greatly, namely near compleat information on the state of the game. I don't mean a total score of each player during the game, thoug it's also trackable, but you alwas know how many stars each of your opponents gained, how many combat cards do they have, what is their military power etc. This allows for formulating a long term strategy, not mearly react to the current state of the game.
Hi Jamey...Really like Scythe and bought my copy in Essen in 2017...and man what a game it is.... Even got it on app too😁 The elements described in your video plays a huge part for for me deciding what games I/we buy for our collection... Eclipse is nice but the random element of dice is just a bit too much... But we really enjoyed the workings of Kemet and the cards way of doing battle and resolving conflict. You are spot-on about asymmetry and replayability of games and that is what we LOVE about Scythe... Engine building and like the one in Scythe always plays a nice part in feeling that you have accomplished something in the game even if you haven't won in the end...and THAT to me/us is a huge part of us loving to play Scythe. Some of the games that you mentioned in your review served us with some good inspiration as we set out the create our own game that encompasses some of these great concepts that that you have mentioned in your video... And tells us that we are on the right path ito of the elements we tried to include in our game.... Thx so much sharing this video and hearing your thoughts on this topic... This was a real blessing today😁

Another good video, Jamey - I look forward to these each Sunday. I've still to play a Stonemaier game and am intrigued by recent Red Rising videos/reviews (game looks beautiful too ! - well done). I suggest you mention your preferred choice for each pair first (triplets and more welcome as well).
I think Inis is certainly a contender for your #7 slot (combat). Don’t get me wrong, Inis is far more combat-heavy than Scythe, but the two games have similar philosophies of war. There’s the idea that anyone could have an ace up their sleeve, the “little guy” is not always at a clear disadvantage, all players involved in combat are burning through resources (therefore, you have to be more selective about picking fights) - and most importantly, you don’t need to fight at all to win the whole game! In fact, the peaceful players in both games tend to sneak past the finish line. Unfortunately for Inis, Scythe came out in the same year. 2016 was a phenomenal year in board game history, and Inis just got buried under all the craziness.
Well I unfortunately didn't get a lot of use out of this since I own 9 of the 10 and the other one I have played and HAAAAAAAATE it (Terra Mystica) haha. Pretty sure I rated it a 4. (Scythe is a 10 for me btw). But you know sometimes games that people feel are similar to a game you love still won't work for you. It happens. Still great list. I agree with all but number 1 haha
Great list Jamey. Don’t worry about blanking on it that rule. We all do things like that.... Also, I gotta try Clank, I keep hearing wonderful things. Also, dune imperium is on my list to try, how’d you feel about the components, I’ve heard mixed thoughts from some people.

My Little Scythe is a lot of fun...even if you're not a little one anymore. :P My kids are reaching the age when they are getting ready to move out and they still enjoy it.
Prior to watching your video, I decided that Scythe is characterized by 3 core elements: 1) it's an engine-builder, 2) it has a map, 3) it has asymmetric factions. (I think the map is especially important to Scythe's magic formula, as there a many engine builders out there with the world abstracted. In Scythe, it's concrete, and its integral to your engine building.) So brainstorming games with those 3 characteristics: 1. Terraforming Mars (although the map here is used differently, more as bonuses than conflict or engine building) 2. Marco Polo II (although engine building is minor in this game but the cities do offer new ways to generate resources) 3. Yokohama (although the asymmetric powers are acquired during the game, not granted at the beginning, and are minor) 4. Terra Mystica (the most obvious selection) 5. Crusaders: Thy Will Be Done (have you played this? You should try it!) 6. Risk: Europe (a very Euro Risk, not just literally!) 7. Tapestry 8. Clans of Caledonia As an Honorable Mention I'd list Concordia and Navegador. Neither has asymmetric powers (very weakly in Concordia, I suppose, as you might buy a card no one else has at some point), but both do the Scythe map-engine building integration so strongly.
Now halfway through your video I would add the theme as a 4th core element. Shows my bias as a gamer to think mechanisms first. Scythe's art and theme though were both definitely part of why I love the game so much. Of all the games I put on my list, Terraforming Mars is the clear winner for carrying through a theme embedded into the game and also being really interesting. Most of the other games on my list are pretty by the book "obtain economic dominance somewhere in Eurasia."
I love Gaia Project but I guess I'm one of the few people who prefers Terra Mystica just a tad more. Reason is the cutthroat nature of TM which makes it more tight and intense.
