  • Do you want to know the truth about my first year in Germany?
    The struggles and the adventures?
People say a lot of things about “first years” and “first experiences”. Some have it easier than others and some go through hell and back again to make things work. For me, it was a little different.

I can't help asking myself how you understand the difference between expats and immigrants.
For myself, when I was working in Hamburg, expats were CEOs, and upper-middle management types, who came with their families to stay for 2-3 years, or four at most, e.g. from Norway or France.

or in other words: image movies are not reality. I would wish Baden-Württemberg people would be more often so open minded and amusing like in this video, often they are the opposite of that.

@@mattesrocket That is what I thought as well - until I started really thinking about the friends I made the last 60 years in Ba-Wü.
One local (actually still owning a Turkish passport) I met the other day on the street after he had managed to arrange Islam-courses at the Gymnasium his sons visit (he is a member or the Elternbeirat) worked with me ten years ago. We started talking about the twenty years we worked together and he mentioned his visits to the Arab countries. He only spoke English there and made them think he did not understand any Arab (Actually he is fluent in it since his childhood in Germany). He raised his children trilingual, they started with Turkish (his wife) and Arabian (him) and added German in Kindergarten (he is fluent without any accent).
Combinations like this are rather common these days. At the last kindergarten party there suddenly existed a table with everybody speaking Russian. One person had said a sentence to his spouse in Russian and suddenly several families (well, just the parents to be precise) switched to the language they had grown up with. They only then norticed that others had been growing up the same way. And I learned something new about the friends of my daughter, that I always had assumed to be locals.
Actually these days we have quite a mix of people here in Baden-Württemberg and often you can not tell where they are from. Most of them integrate perfectly as far as behavior and language is concerned.
Last week there was trouble with the Strassenbahn in our village/Dorf and the communication through the loudspeaker was hard to understand. So I decided to be polite and repeat it in English to some Asian guests (travelling with suitcase). Then the girl (about 20-25) admonished me (in German!) that I should talk German with them.
That was the moment I decided that in the future in Germany I would only address people in English and then continue in German until asked to do different.

@@jmolofsson Well, an expat is an immigrant that does not know yet, he is going to stay.
Seriously though, the difference is the status. An immigrant is actively trying to get a German passport and live here indefinitely. After the last changes of European laws that automatically includes all people from European countries or Switzerland.

This was very interesting, Jenna, thanks for sharing. I am so glad you had that dreamy start, and got to fall in love with Germany before the Alltag and bureaucracy got hold of you, as well as the personal difficulties. Also, my first jobs in Germany were in Freiburg and Düsseldorf- I literally travelled on the train between them Friday Düsseldorf, Saturday Freiburg!
You are a lovely person, sending a virtual hug 🤗

Interesting video and there's a lot I can relate to. I first moved to Germany in the early 2000s to teach English on a two-year contract. I was quite lucky that my employer sorted a lot of things out for me and provided accommodation. This meant that I didn't have to go through the rigamarole of finding a flat, furnishing it, etc. I was also in a bit of an expat/English-speaking bubble, so it did come as a slight shock to the system when I moved to D'dorf and had to step outside that. Overall, though, it's one of the best moves I've made. I daresay your husband could have got a good job in England as a dentist. For me, though, the UK cost of living has just become too high. I've found that Germany offers a lot more in terms of prospects and quality of life. Kudos to you for going down the self-employment route, though, as that can be very difficult and expensive.

    Hello Jenna
You are one of the sweetest person i have ever seen, i absolutely love your channel and appreciate your meaning, because you really into the things that you like to talk about with a lot of research. And even if i don't agree with everything i have so much respect of your work.
Interesting to hear about this very specific topic of your experience and life with different culture, different language, far away of your home and so much to learn.
Freiburg is wonderful, a very nice place, but they need to build new houses as well as lot of other places in Germany.
I wish you a nice weekend, maybe with some snow ❄️

Hey Jenna, interesting, I didn't know about your Freiburg experience. I spent my first 15 years Germany in the Düsseldorf area. You missed the time when steel was still being produced in the Ruhr valley and the air quality was really bad. When I left they were just starting construction on the Rheinpromenade in Düsseldorf and it has become a much nicer place to live now. For the last 25 years I have been living in the Karlsruhe area and have family living in Freiburg and in Berlin. To be honest, I do prefer this part of Germany, but I think that most areas of Germany have their own particular attractions. For expats wanting to come to Germany, I would suggest looking for a smaller, self-governed munipality near a larger city to start out in. The bureaucracies there generally are not as overwelmed as in the larger cities and they tend to be very helpful to expats.

One thing my mom always said to me was “don’t be scared, because nothing ever needs to be permanent.” It really helped ease my mind when I took the big leap… simply knowing if I didn’t like it in germany, I’d go back home to Canada and get a new job. I always thought of the “worst case scenario’s” which helped me move forward 🥰

if those were little snippets from videos from way back when you came here, then i'm actually a little envious - eight years and you haven't changed a bit. 👍 and for saying you did everything wrong in your first year and you had to grow up fast afterwards: it would seem that somehow "you've got the curve" 😁 and made up for it pretty well 👏👏.
so, if you were trying to put yourself up as being a bad example - i'm sorry to say, but you failed miserabely (especially at the end of the video...)😁💛💛

Well , aren't you glad you did not give up your sweetheart but more important, you did not move to LITTLE BRITAIN - FORMERLY KNOWN AS 'THE EMPIRE OF GREAT BRITAIN ' 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
My first year in the states was tough, evenso my english was already good enough because in my German hockey team we always had canadian players ( 2 foreigners the league allowed each Team here back then ).
So I had years of practicing my school english 😱 ). But making friends was despite americans being friendly , they are very, very on surface ( sehr oberflächlich ), so it took a year about to make serious friends. Stop blabbering Franco 🙄
Anywho, bet many many people are glad you stayed 👍🙋‍♂️
