I listen to this tune when I need to cry just as a pressure release. I'm a hard core Army vet but have much respect for a man so compassionate about animals as Henry Gross. And I harbor no doubt that the good dog Shannon is waiting patiently under that tree in Heaven waiting for Dad to come home.
I'm a 30 year Army Veteran myself, and this song has tugged at my emotions since 1976, it's the song that makes you pull over and grab a kleenex and say Yes something is wrong, I love Shannon 💘
I agree Thomas. it certainly is a pressure release. I have never owned a dog long enough to experience these emotions but I did raise a cat for 16.5 years and I know the feeling.
@@patrickflohe7427 I never stopped missing my two babies we had to put down. Both unbelievably great & intelligent females. Heaven would be a place where I could be with them again. One day we will be Al together…
Been there, 3 years ago for me now. I still cry when I think about him. Diesel, he was a good boy, and I pray to God above, that I will see him again when my time comes to go home.
My German Shepherd Liberty just died tonight, very untimely. We just were playing earlier, gave her a new ball, which meant the world to her. She was the only dog that would come up when I was lying on the floor and press her face against me, giving hugs and love. This song is for her tonight. May she be with God.
I recently lost my little flower (mini dox) of 18 years this week. She passed quietly in the night, leaving this planet in a circle of love. This song is the perfect tribute to a wonder dog and also eases pain through the tears.
My Golden Retriever's name was Shannon, got her as a puppy On Feb 14th 1980. I found her in a gas station dumpster and took her home to find her a good home. I spent the next 16 years "looking" for that home for her 😊. She crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 1996 and gave us 16 years of joy and love Thank you Henry for the song, it always reminds me of her and my heart melts thinking of her
It is awful when they go, isn't it? Animals were created first and were gifts to humans and I will always feel that because they give something to us that we can't explain and humans cannot fill that void in our hearts. In May 1996, I lost my only daughter. I tell myself to this day that I have been through worse and when an animal leaves me, I question why my heart breaks so. I think it is that they are the clay that keeps us together. And-the best friends have been found in dumpsters. Those that put them there though-they have no heart. They can just as well be left at a shelter. I'm telling everyone to Adopt-Don't Shop as I cannot bear the sad faces I see at the shelters and I cannot bear the pain when they have lost their spot and are donated to medical schools. That's not a good way for a loving pet to end their lives as much as students may learn something in med school-but there are other ways. It's cheaper to use discarded and unwanted animals.
Glenn MacDonald - YES, that is the real, the one and only HENRY GROSS!!! He uploads new videos and a live performance of this song on his channel. Check him out!
I have often said.....I wouldn't want to live in a world without art. I remember I met Dan Hill and we talked for a while and now I hear he uses my saying at parties. ....LOL Henry thanks for healing my loss and pain with your gift.
This is one of those songs that just tugs at your heart. If you're a dog owner, and have one of those companions that just gives unconditional love to you, and goes crazy happy when you walk through the door, you can't but cry when this song plays...the tears just start to roll. Like "thomasfox5764 below said..."I listen to this tune when I need to cry just as a pressure release." Like Tom, I hae a hard-core history, though not in the military, but as a Paramedic in a large Midwest city. This song helps decompress the nightmares I've lived through over the years. It's good therapy for guys/gals like us. Thank you Henery for recording this song. I'm sure it's helped a lot of people like me and Thomasfox. Peace.
These songs make me feel like I should be hearing my mom in the kitchen while I'm in my room listening to all these great songs sure do miss those days ❤😢
My dad had this on a mix CD when I was a kid. Every time I hear it I get super emotional. My mom's cat just passed away from a blood clot and all I could think of was playing this song to remember them. Truly an epic!
I've loved this song from the moment I heard it. And here in 2019 it moves me just like the first time. Thanks Henry for such timeless memories.........Big Duke.
This song makes you want to go grab your dog and give him a big hug.....take him for a ride in the truck. I've had a few yellow labs like the ones in the video...LOVED the water....tennis balls and water....
Somehow I thought when I grew up this song wouldn't make me feel so sad. If anything, now it's worse. Love to all the critters and the people who love them.
I thought the same thing. This song just puts my heart in my throat. I have to go hug my boys now. This song makes me wonder how I'm ever going to handle it when they go home, they are my little buddies. Damn, I think I'm going to cry again.
Amazing & outstanding lyrics. I've known the words since I learned them so many years ago, still know every line. Anyone who has loved / been loved by a special DOG or CAT knows these words. They just haunt you.
Skate Land USA every Friday for me and my childhood best friend. We skated to this song. Until she was killed in a tragic car accident. Thanks for posting. It makes for great memories!
In the end all we hear is noise and all we type are words. Talking to a deaf person really gives you a greater understanding about what sound is and how you experience it.
I don’t mind a “ noise “ song as you put it every once in awhile but totally agree with you . These make me relax and chill . What you said was well out and have a great day 🙌🏻🙏🍀❤️🍀
every time I hear this song I feel tears in my eyes. Have always had this, since I first heard it in the 70's. I was a teenager then. I am now 61 and it still brings tears. I feel this about my puppies that have got to doggy heaven.
sad but beutifully written & played song, pets are BETTER than most people, I think about my dog......., still cry 6 years later, I feel his spirit around me, I know I will be with him again.he lived to love me.

This song along with the absence of my Penny, my beautiful American Foxhound of 14 years & 21 days... Oh how it hurts, make me cry. Maybe one the most beautifully written and composed songs I have ever heard. Love this song. Sad song but life can be that way at times. Good 🎵 has so much to say. Memories are sometimes are all we have.

So damned sad. So amazingly sung. Gorgeous voice. We sang this in the car all of the time and I cried every time. I think of every pet I've lost. The words a re perfect. I'm crying right now. This song is perfect. Thank you. We had a cat, "Kitty" and I found her when I was 10 and she was full-grown, a beat-up, stray and she stayed with us for 22 years. When she finally died, she was deaf, toothless and limping, but she hung in there. I think because she knew we all loved her so much. Anytime one of us came back home our first question was, "Where's Kitty?" I swear because then, she had bonded with my Dad so much, she couldn't leave him. She spoke to every person who came into our house. She loved to play "hide & seek," she learned to bring me live animals to take care of, because she knew I loved to raise animals. She never hurt my mourning dove or my pigeon or mice, or the raccoon, she would sit with us at the kitchen table and poke us with her paw while staring straight ahead when she wanted a treat. We all pretended not to notice. We miss her to this day. My Dad drove up to the cottage to bury her alone, I think because he didn't want us to see him cry. Animals are so special.
+Getrealpeeps You are correct! :) it is the word: "HEARD!" Makes sense...because why would anyone that lost a dog to the outgoing tide, hope she's drifting-out to see... :p Here's the correct lyrics: HENRY GROSS "Shannon" Another day's at end Mama says she's tired again No one can even begin to tell her... I hardly know what to say But maybe it's better that wayIf papa were here I'm sure he'd tell her...Shannon, is gone I "heard" She's drifting out to sea She always loved to swim away Maybe she'll find an island with a shaded tree Just like the one in our backyard...(edit), etc.Regards,AL

I love the song I had a daughter that was 23 that passed away and her middle name was Shannon not a dog but I can relate and I cry every time I hear it but it's like I want to hear it to get it out makes me feel better
I was 12 years old when I first listened to the song and it was beautiful as a song but when I heard what the song was about I couldn't hold the tears and I cried my eyes out like a little girl .
Always brings me to tears. I remember listening to this as a young boy and how I grew to love it and just the childhood memories that go along with this breaks me down
The first thing i hope to see in heaven is all of my beloved pets who have passed. Loved them all. God bless all the people who try to love and take care of these babies. You will be rewarded some day.
This song came out around the time I lost my little tricolor collie Shannon. She was about a year old. Some kidney problem. I still think about her and can't believe the timing of when that song came out. Very cathartic. Makes me cry today
My adolescence --- OMG tears -- I never knew this song was about his puppy. I have always just loved thjis song and hearing it again at 61 is incredible but really emotional!!!
for my cloe who passed away at 18 month's. I love your song makes me cry but helps me remember the short special time we had. your wildfire reminds me of my grandpa showing me how to take care and ride. miss him. Thanks
At 67 this song hurts as much as...back then. Loss... all we can do is learn to live with it.
At 78, I let my best buddy, Bentley, go yesterday. It was time, but wow it hurts so much. Go run and play and chase down your red kong ball. Bye
We always find some way to live with it ,keep them in heart😊

Another day's at end
Mama says she's tired again
No one can even begin to tell her...
I hardly know what to say
But maybe it's better that wayIf papa were here I'm sure he'd tell her...Shannon, is gone I "heard"

Maybe she'll find an island with a shaded tree

I love the song I had a daughter that was 23 that passed away and her middle name was Shannon not a dog but I can relate and I cry every time I hear it but it's like I want to hear it to get it out makes me feel better
One of the most beautiful songs I ever heard
This is a classic love song.
what memories this song brings
Yes this makes me cry too!
I was 12 years old when I first listened to the song and it was beautiful as a song but when I heard what the song was about I couldn't hold the tears and I cried my eyes out like a little girl .
Always brings me to tears. I remember listening to this as a young boy and how I grew to love it and just the childhood memories that go along with this breaks me down
There is no beautiful song like this..I wish everyone would listen and understand..God bless

This is such a beautiful song, I have four cats and can’t bear the thought of losing them.
