I think a lot if these "on the way out trends" are fueled by designers who made a lot of money having people take down walls (for instance) and now want to make a lot of money having people put them back up.
One of my most difficult tasks is to decide what features to include and how elaborate. My process is always a twisted curvy path of back and forth on options. Usually (being the operative word) I get it kinda ok ;)
Re white kitchens, easy, bring color into it via decorations and tile backsplash, problem solved. Re open concept kitchens, don’t be lazy, keep your kitchen clean, problem solved. Re matte black hardware, not my taste but it’s easily changeable so no big deal, do what you like. Re wall cabinets, if you have the ability to have windows there instead, definitely go for it but most houses aren’t built that way, so enjoy your upper wall cabinets storage. (Wish I had the windows). Forget the shelves unless it’s a rarely used kitchen. Re faux finishes, if it looks good and can be sanitary (not loving painted countertops). Re herringbone, just personal preference, agree with not making the colors too bold. Re Carrera Marble, another perfect marble product for those who don’t use their kitchen, aka, don’t cook with tomato sauce, I worry about staining. Re appliances over the range, for those that only have that space available, it’s a must, but if there is another location available, use it. Re contemporary aesthetic, agree, since you are contemporaneous designing your kitchen, you’ll always be correct. Re farmhouse style, I believe it’s tied to the political value of bring back the past, keeping women barefoot and pregnant with no innovation allowed. Re tile backsplash, this is your opportunity to bring style into your kitchen so choose carefully. Tiles are easy to clean. If you can afford slab, go for it. Re ultra modern design, there will always be those who prefer a streamline look, let them have it, it’s their kitchen! Note that the new Samsung Bespoke line is ultra modern and selling well. I use the one column Bespoke refrigerator in my pantry as an overflow.
I don't know how the average person can do without wall cabinets. Wall shelves can be attractive if styled correctly, but again, most people, the average person, needs cabinetry for storage. Otherwise shelves can looked cluttered and become something else to clean and dust.
Every list of every “what’s going out of style for this year” since I started following the design world (around 2008) has included the all white kitchen. Every year they keep saying it and every year they have to keep saying it because the white kitchen never goes out of style. It’s classic. Certain iterations of all white kitchens go out of style, like maybe distressed antique white cabinets with scrolling milk work, that feels a little 2005. But a fresh white kitchen will always be in style.
So true! I built my house in 1996 and the model had an amazing all white kitchen. I didn’t get it because it was a substantial upgrade and I was squeezing my tiny wallet into the neighborhood as it was. 28yrs and a whole home remodel later,I don’t regret not doing a all white for our home but I still like all white kitchens. Maybe next remodel in 15-20yrs.
The all white kitchen will feel more and more dated as the decade wears on, I think, because it feels so impersonal now, esp of super modern or minimal styles, but more warm elements can always be added: wood cutting boards, copper pots, etc. because it’s no longer trending, doesn’t mean it’s no longer classy. Trends are mathematical-- to say it’s going to go out of style is different from going out, as far as kitchen designers reporting on the new trends are. And one of the things people are tired of and are no longer asking for en masse is a sterile, streamlined, all white kitchen. Will white kitchens still be beautiful, done well? Of course!
The thing I hate about “trends” is their one ultimate goal of getting you to part with your money by making you feel guilty about not “being in style” year after year.

I I think the lesson here is avoid “hot trends” for kitchens. Do what’s functional, do what’s lasted the test of time, do what you want, and do quality. Some of these are ridiculous…the hardware keeps changing like every year. The upper cabinets “being out” is a luxury that most people cannot afford, spare, or manage. People need the storage, it is a losing battle to keep those open shelves dust free and pretty. My kitchen is pretty tiny..,I can’t imagine getting rid of my uppers unless I sacrificed my whole living room to be a massive island
I like to decorate according to the architecture of the home and whether the rooms face North, South, East or West, and the amount of light in my rooms. I never run with the trends.
The microwave over the range can be dangerous, completely inaccessible to anyone with mobility issues and wheelchair use and/or children potentially falling on a possibly hot range. A glass cooktop could break if a dish falls on it.
1. White Kitchens - classic, will never go out. Every year they say it’s going out and every year it’s still here going strong. 2. Open concept - here to stay. Functional. 3. Matte Black Hardware - can read farmhouse, which is definitely out. Can be done in a way that feels fresh, depends on the other elements in the kitchen. I prefer other finishes 4. Wall Cabinets - to be replaced by open shelving?!? Nope. A wall without upper cabinets I can get behind. Open shelving is dated. Very specific, curated, open shelving you can get away with. I’d rather put my kitchen clutter behind closed (beautiful cabinet) doors 5. Faux finishes - “not 3, faux finishes” 😂. Faux finishes are never “in” style. It’s what we do when the real thing doesn’t fit the budget. Do your best in your own budget. 6. Herringbone - I like herringbone. I hope it sticks around a while longer 7. Carrera marble - maybe I’d say marbles with warmer tone veins rather than carrera’s cooler tone veins are more “in.” I’m still behind quartz or quartzite 8. Appliances over the range - will never go out in small kitchens. Also, GE Cafe over the range microwave is 😍 9. Contemporary style - still in. It is a broad design style with many different iterations. Different iterations go in and out but not contemporary overall 10. Farmhouse - out, overdone 11. Backsplash tile - stone slabs as backsplash are more “on trend.” But not everyone has the budget for that and there are plenty of backdplash tile choices that are “on trend” too (zellige handmade tile for example). Tile backsplash will never go away 12. Ultra-modern is a broad design style. See contemporary style. My impression is that this article was written by someone who doesn’t know that much about design but wanted to say a few buzzy things hoping for clicks.
I agree with most of what you said, but for me white is so boring and everyone has it. I do like off white colours with darker countertops. That's the only thing we differ on. Thank for taking the time to bring these points out. ✌
Hi 👋 Point 2 - Open concept. With rising energy costs I think spaces will reduce (ceiling height as well) in order to keep those costs down. An alternative I have seen a couple of architecturally designed homes is where they have used sliding glass doors within the open concept for this reason.
Where I live, white kitchens are still the go to, especially if you are planning to sell. Besides, I still love a white kitchen and that is what matters to me. At this point in my life (early 60s), I really don't care whether something is "dated" or not. I'm going with what is functional for me as well as what makes me happy.
I'm 70, and trendy doesn't matter to me at all. My daughter, an interior designer, designed me an all white kitchen. I love it, not because it was on trend at the time, but because it was so gorgeous. I can put colour into it at any time with tablecloths, cushions (I have room for 2 comfy chairs), flowers, dishes etc. My kitchen is huge, with tons of natural light, so I don't need white to make the room bright. I just love the white, period. And, I'm looking for an rv to place on my son's farm for when I visit. Although I don't like the yellow in oak, I do like some of the models with dark wood. I find it looks upscale. I've seen new rv's with all grey/white, and it just doesn't feel homey to me. And rv's don't have tons of natural light...but still prefer the dark wood. It's just me. That being said, I got a bunch of used white cabinets from a freind that I'm putting into my accessory apartment. I might paint those, to be determined. Maybe very light grey or sand? Or I could redo them white, as they'll need some touchup to cover some of the wear and tear from use and from the transport to my home. I'll have to McIver these cabinets to fit into my existing space, so this You Tube channel will be invaluable to me. I will have to put together one corner unit from straight units.
From what I heard, white is the color to go when you get older, because you see everything better with aging eyes. I believe white will never go out of style, whatever the designers tell us.
As a legally blind woman who cooks daily, I need an all-white or very, very light kitchen for the contrast it provides against everything else. I want an IKEA kitchen so badly! I am unable to get down to bottom cabinets which have doors instead of drawers. Those should be eliminated forever. I bring in color with my kitchen towels. I don’t like open concept because upholstered furniture soaks up food odors. If I could, I’d gut my kitchen and start over using my own needs to guide design. Function before form!

You bring forward a point I never thought about before... "open concept is bad because upholstered furniture soaks up food odors". I was juggling about my total open concept (on my house plan) or 'closing' my kitchen with a couple folding glass doors (that would give me the extra possibility of having stained glass on the transoms windows I will install on top of them - oooohhhh I'm excited). So be it. Folding doors will separate the kitchen and the dining room. Thank you.
I like the open kitchen going into my eating area, (I don't have a formal dining room) but not into my living area. I don't like the idea of guests coming in and seeing my kitchen right away. I like my kitchen to be something someone has to go on a treasure hunt to find. lol

I have to tell you I love your no nonsense and practical take on "trends", your witty commentary and sense of humor when it comes to people with unlimited budgets opinions on what kitchens should look like at any given time. I don't hear these "experts" talking about personal needs, budget or functionality. Subscribed!
That's what I am thinking. Who has the money to keep up these styles and on top of that they try to make people feel bad because they may have last year's trends.
I love white kitchens with wood floors and butcher block counters and lots of pops of color in the other decor items. I also like a separate kitchen and dining room. I love old homes (mine is over 100 years old) and open concept only works with large cased doorways between living room and dining room, not kitchen and dining room.
Having no wall cabinets only works if you have the space, and if you have no kids. You need those high hiding spots where your little raccoons can't reach so easily.
If you are a person more concerned with looking up to date and do not actually cook, they work. I cook everything from scratch, including things like making mayo. I need a working kitchen not a show case.
It's okay for me to have an open kitchen to the eating area but when it opens to the living room, ugh! Looks like an open barn. I like rooms to be more separate. I do me, you do you and everyone is happy😊.
Its personal taste i know but for me, solid backsplash seems to lack character. Grout lines add interest and dimension. As for cleaning, ive never come across that being a problem if the grout is properly sealed or is one of the high tech acrylic or epoxy grouts.
The two I feel strongly about are the first two. White kitchens are fantastic blank templates. You can play with wall color more as well as backsplash and hardware. Basically, you can choose something else to focus on. Open concepts are great for new builds. I don’t see it going away based on cost effectiveness for new homes. Less walls less time and resources.
I'm going with a white/light gray granite backsplash with some darker gray flow bands (_schlieren,_ our German structural geologist friends would call them, with some small but vibrant red garnet crystals in the matrix. contrasting with dark gray "blue pearl" countertops. A half-billion years in the future, geophysicists of whatever intelligent species has succeeded our successors as the dominant life form on this planet will wonder what sequence of orogenic upheavals brought the Norwegian anorthosite (blue pearl) into contact with the Brazilian ashen white granite. Am I crazy to be trolling our descendents that way? I think not. Let them have the headaches I had as a young geology student back when continents were static before the world was round.
They are great for people who have normal size kitchens and not giant magazine kitchens. In my last home putting the microwave over the stove doubled my working counter space.
As far as open kitchens go, I think it’s fine to have an open kitchen to a dining area. I do not, however, like the kitchen open to a living space. I custom built a home in 2007, and even then, was remorseful of designing it with an open kitchen to the living space. The noise and clatter from the kitchen spilling into a room meant for relaxing or many who are watching something on tv, is just a big turn off. I own a significantly smaller home now, and like that the kitchen is separated from the living space. It is open to a small dining/fireplace addition, and that looks nice.
I thought herringbone just came in 😆 Don't people know you can't switch out tile like an old T-Shirt. I think its the color/tile more than the pattern. Certain colors (white) will always be timeless.
I’m a retired interior designer and “love my all-white kitchen! You can pretty well put any color in it as accent and it will look great. Also, I can see so much better.
I grew up in the country so for me farmhouse I love. It feels more welcoming and cozy. I don't want my house to feel like a cold business office, it's not cozy. I've seen more people like the large subway tile in straight rows now. I don't like it, I think it looks awful. I like the smaller tile offset.
1. Our kitchen cabinets will be soft white shaker with butcher block counters. Backsplash is subway tile in soft mint green glass. Hardwood floors throughout. 2. I am claustrophobic…there’s no way I’m spending my day in a closed room. Also, grandchildren without supervision? Legos in my kitchen? Not a chance… 3. The only thing with black finish is that hard water leaves huge white stains on it. I like the look of it way better than gold. We did the oil rubbed bronze in our old house. I like either. 4. Hands off my cabinets! 5. I would love to do soapstone or a recycled glass countertop but it’s too costly…butcher block is what we be using since we can make it from wood milled on our farm. 6. I’m thinking about subway tile in mint green glass (remember white cabinets) but a smooth flat surface behind the stove. What is scary is those massive art backsplash pieces from Etsy. 7. Marble is so heavy. It stains like crazy. My daughter had it in her apartment and hated it. I would like something cold like marble in one small area for rolling pastry dough. 8. OTR…can’t reach it, can’t clean it, hate it. Wall microwaves should be 3” below your shoulder top. I’m 4’11” so that means the microwave should be around 3’8” or 8” above the stove…so no. 9. I’m old enough to have lived through all of these. Ultra modern does not feel homey and warm. I want it to look (and be) clean but warm. Dark cabinets and cabinets are also incredibly hard to keep clean because you can’t see all of the dirt. Farmhouse style works well for me as I live in an old farmhouse…but those stupid word art things have to go. If I could afford it, I would do farmhouse with an AGA or Elmira stove. 10. Tile is affordable…slab stone is not. What I do hate is contrasting grout or wide grout lines. Another alternative would be a poured resin. 11. Yuck…reminds me of a alien spaceship or a hospital (if it’s white). However, that could all be warmed up with some plants.
If herringbone only lasted a year or two, IMHO it is not so obsequious that it will “date” a kitchen. Dating happens when one looks at your kitchen your materials choices indicate when it was built or remodeled.
All white kitchens may not be “trendy” right now. But saying white kitchens are going out of style is like saying black cars are going out of style. Not a chance.
People realized during the pandemic that cooking in your living room is hot, smelly and loud. That’s why they are putting up walls again. Open kitchens are fine if you live alone or rarely cook. But nobody cares how their kitchen photographs for instagram when they have everyone trying to work, do online school and relax in one big room with a sink and exhaust fan going.
Open shelving while beautiful is such a PIA to keep things clean from the greasy kitchen dust that invariably happens near the stove... regardless of how good your range hood is :P I would keep uppers because i always need more storage and maybe some open shelving far away from the stove area.... IMHO i don't worry about trends .... i just choose finishes that make me happy and i end up with a gothic modern farmhouse mix.... black, white, skulls etc etc LOL
Yes, open shelving for storage is enormously unsanitary. People do it to save the cost of upper cabinetry, and then try to excuse that by claiming it's on point design wise A small shelf somewhere in your kitchen for display/styling only is okay, but a whole kitchen full of open wall shelves is not. As for resale, I would never buy a house where open shelves substitute for cabinets with a door. As a kitchen designer, I 100% discourage clients from using open shelves for storage.
Looking to get very light wood cabinets rather than white. Something like a white oak. You get the light coloring that a white gives and the warmth of wood.
I have a small kitchen and I decided to do my kitchen "restaurant style." For me that meant white cabinets, gray countertop, white subway backsplash, and all brushed/stainless hardware. I have a restaurant style faucet (the kind with the spring that you can pull away and clean your entire sink), and the countertop is granite with a marble-ish look. I decided not to go with quartz because it's not as heat resistant as natural stone. White cabinets have been popular since at least the 50s, and except for the natural ebb and flow of whatever is trending, have always come back into style, albeit with some things different (such as no painted steel cabinets like there were in the 50s), but white is classic and will always be a part of the kitchen decorating dynamic imo. I never buy into "trends" for the reasons many commenters gave. It seems to be a money grab to encourage people to stay on trend. I don't give two hoots (UA-cam safe) with what's "on trend." I do what I like and my small kitchen is very attractive. Of course, the Ruby red BlueStar range with the stainless backsplash and the huge vent overhead might have a little to do with the attractiveness! I have stainless, white, or red decorative accents, and that makes me happy. Because I can change the accent at any time. Most of my small appliances are either white or stainless. So there you go. I'm not a trend follower and never have been. I never liked the idea of open shelving in the kitchen because a busy kitchen is going to throw all kinds of grease, attract dust, etc. All of those things on the open shelving would have to be washed on a fairly regular basis. I've never understood the hate against farmhouse style. I think it's kind of cool, but then again that's me.
I agree 110% regarding open shelving … especially if its used to store supposedly clean plates, cups, glasses etc. i shudder when i go into someones home and they offer me a drink in a cup or glass thats been sitting in on an open shelf. If its a shelf occupied by a plant or something non food related, i do like that look.
I guess this stuff is going out of style among rich people in LA, who are definitely a very narrow demographic! I think having no wall cabinets is only a good option for people with big kitchens with room for an island with storage or for two or even three walls of base cabinets, or for extreme minimalists with little to store. I have a fairly narrow, enclosed kitchen with no room for an island, so I need my upper cabinets!
Oh, the good news is my kitchen cabinets arrived this week and are being installed as we speak! So pretty. Porcelain countertop fabricator MAY be over next week for templating.
Hi Mark, renovated my kitchen 7 or 8 yrs ago. No wall cabinets on 2 sides, high built-in cabinets on one side with built-in oven, microwave, fridge. Though cook and bake a lot, I don’t miss the wall cabinets. Love prepping and cooking without those things in front of my face. I’m also short (5’2”) so I benefit greatly on storing my things in the drawers.
One thing I don't like about the open kitchen is my guests will go in my kitchen and start washing dishes. I want my guests to not even think about dishes and just have a good time, but so many of my friends also like to bring a dish and sometimes like to put the finishing touches in my kitchen. They like to share in the cooking process...so the open kitchen is better for that. I need upper cabinets regardless of trends. I like a timeless design and I think white is always nice, but I prefer an accent color with white. TFS
I grew up with a closed kitchen and hated it. My current home is open concept and I love it! Maybe columns or partial walls are okay, but I will never personally want a closed kitchen again. If I were ever to build my dream house, it would definitely have a butler's pantry. And I don't leave dirty dishes lying around. Matte black hardware is timeless! This person is nuts! Open shelves are going out of style for good reason. Stuff gets dirty on open shelving. Marble is too hard to maintain although it is beautiful. I disagree with this one. Excuse me, but subway tile is classic and timeless.

The above the range microwave is for those of us who have absolutely no other place to put a huge appliance in our kitchens. Oh how nice it would be to have a kitchen large enough to not need to have the microwave above the range.
Herringbone has become victim of the tacky chevron fabric and paint rage of the past few decades. It was always a beautiful expression of a classic tile pattern. Now it's chevron-ish. That green, black, and white stove back wall is a chevron/herringbone crime.
Kitchens need to be divided into two classes. Kitchens people will cook in, and kitchens that are just for looks. When you see a really pretty kitchen, the owners usually say, "Oh, we don't cook." I talked to a contractor once who was angry about customers who wanted a perfectly fine, up-to-date kitchen demolished and replaced just because they were bored. If they would start cooking, they wouldn't be bored anymore.
13:00 I ordered enough oil-rubbed bronze handles for my kitchen project when I bought my copper under-mount sink and oil-rubbed bronze faucet set. Simple rectangular pulls with rounded ends and no finials will give the right contrast with the white slab-front cabinets and dark blue horizontal countertop surfaces and black porcelain cooktop.
Trade off to no wall cabinets that I like the best is to have a few shallow pantry cabinets and leave the rest of the walls open. The pantry cabinets more than make up for the loss of wall cabinets and I think looks a lot sleeker. I think it works best when you have a rather large island to make up for the loss of the counter space that you get from using tall cabinets.
My daughter is building a house and she wanted double ovens.. meaning the microwave has to go over the stove. I have had it for years and it’s ok , but in my next house I don’t want it there. My mom had it but could t use it after she had shoulder surgery so she had to get a countertop one just for her. The rest of us used the one over the stove.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I recently saw some UA-cam videos on freestanding kitchen where some cabinets are on legs and some on wheels. I think these ideas are very interesting and like them, being some one who loves to move furniture around once in a long while. Please share what you think of freestanding kitchen.
I know in South Africa they are quite popular (and probably other parts of the world), but in NA a completely freestanding kitchen could be possible, just not the norm. I certainly like freestanding elements and I love the look of legs on cabinets. Maybe a mixture of both is a good fit for many homeowners who want the flexibility.
The mid-century better homes had a formal front livingroom, a formal diningroom, a back family room, and a spacious eat-in kitchen. Much better for unannounced visitors. The lesser mid-century homes (like mine) has a partition wall between the livingroom and combination kitchen/dining area. I can still open my door wide to the occassional neighbor that comes knocking, without feeling caught in an untidy kitchen. My partition wall blocks the view of the functional part of the kitchen (sink, fridge, sto ve) from the seating arrangement in the livingroom. I wouldn't give up my partition wall for an open concept fleeting trend. I know better. Open concept is a gimmicky cheap build, promoted as trendy. Ugh.
When we got married in 1976, we could only afford used furniture, and some of that furniture (now antique) is still in our home. I love the softness of it. I hate the kitchens you show because every one of them has super-sharp, cheap machined edges on EVERYTHING. (Well maybe not the appliances. ) You can veneer it, you can use marble, you can built an island, but it all says "factory." When I had new cabinets made for my 1913 kitchen, I told the cabinet shop to take 1/16 inch of the edges of the cabinets doors and frames. It makes a difference.
I like oil rubbed bronze for cabinet hardware, not for faucets, etc. I also like bright brass hardware. But I’d still opt for stainless or nickel for a faucet.
1) white kitchen-classic, but not for me. I enjoy the warmth of wood or even some of the colored cabinets. I do like the white kitchens that offer textures in tile and cabinets. 2) open floor plan-currently have one, enjoyed it initially, would now prefer to have more separation. 3) matte black hardware. It has its place in design. I like it. My hubby doesn't. We don't have it, lol. 4)wall cabinets-I do like the idea of having more windows and would remove upper cabinets to achieve this, as long as I have storage, but I don't like open shelving. (I don't like dusting, hah) 5)faux finishes- I have no skills and would never attempt it. Done well, it can look lovely for a fraction of the cost. Pre-made faux materials are excellent for cost savings. 6)herringbone back splash-nice way to add texture and interest, especially with simple tile. 7)Carrera marble- classic, but I prefer more color and would probably not choose it for myself. 8)appliances over range. I have a microwave hood. If I could, I would have a free standing microwave on a shelf. We've been through a couple of them either because the microwave broke or the electric panel that controlled the light shorted out and would cost as much as a new appliance. Great space saver, if you need it. 9)contemporary-styles come and go. I like it. (actually I like parts of many different styles, so I'd say I was eclectic) 10)farmhouse- I also like this style. 11)tile back splash- sorry they are here to stay. It offers so many options for simple & plain to crazy patterned. I love color and pattern so I'd go crazy if my hubby let me! (he won't, oh well, 😄) 12) ultra modern-cool and interesting but I would never go in this direction. *My style is eclectic and colorful, but I can totally appreciate other peoples design choices. Life should be enjoyed. Decorate in a way that makes you happy.💕
All-white kitchens, no matter how nice the materials, always makes me feel like I'm in a vacant apartment. You know the place: 40 year old cabinetry that's been painted so many times the doors stick to the cabinet and the only break from the visual sea of white noise is the boob light on the ceiling. I can't get that feeling to go away when I'm in an all-white kitchen. I get the "it looks clean," but it's never felt clean in a lived-in way to me.
2:00 Not that I want all white, but white cabinets with contrasting countertops is a good compromise, and gives a fine backdrop for pops of color such as Edsel fire-engine red toaster or apple-green stand mixer or a stainless OTR above a black porcelain cooktop.
It makes sense to stop doing things because it's been done for the last five years and then go back to doing things that we've done for the last 50 years…
I like white or off white kitchens. I like kitchens with light wooden cabinets. As another commenter said, look at your home and consider your personal taste, then choose accordingly. I massively prefer open plan kitchen, dining, living. I’ll never go back to separate kitchens. I would never have a whole lot of open shelves. They are a massive pain to keep clean and the vast majority do not have staff. And why waste that valuable space. As for vignettes… 🙄 And I’m tall. Wall cabinets are far better for me. I have a question. What happened to glass splash backs? They were great!
While I learn a ton from your videos, you could literally cut their time in half if you can get to your point faster and not be so wordy. I am still a fan though but I bet if you make them shorter you'll have more listeners! 💜

Lol. Renovating is expensive! We just had our condo completely renovated in 2022 and have an all white kitchen. We add colour ourselves! No way I care about Forbes saying it’s out! We have open concept (it’s a CONDO!) and surprise, surprise…we have matte black hardware! We also have quartz (in a Carerra marble look)because it was more realistic for us than marble! We have an over-the range microwave. I never use it but it is the best solution. We are so out!
Getting rid of wall cabinets. 1. In a smaller or medium kitchen you usually need the storage. As for shelves, they collect dust and i neither have the desire or time to make it always straight and neat. Im way to anal for that. I read that article and thought this is some hotsy NY designer most likely who has a maid and a chef. Re the pic with windows on both sides. I love those windows. If i had to pick between uppers or windows , i would eat off paper plates and do take out if i had to . I love windowssss in a kitchen.
Electrician had all my electric off all day and night yesterday (switch over to the new box). No power, no modem, no wi-fi, no microwave... Fortunately, I like to read and have plenty of battery-powered camping lights! Sad to have missed this one though.
herringbone has many crevices to clean, so personally, I would opt out...Something with fewer crevices to clean is more functional and has less maintainance
It’s all subjective, so luckily we still have complete control over the look of our own kitchens. I agree with many of the dated trends. But two of the vanishing trends pushed in the Forbes article that you reference are nonsense: 1. Closed upper cabinets are not going away. Why? Because the open cabinets alternative are massive dust collectors, inefficient (very small depth), reduce significantly the amount of storage available, and expose stuff most people don’t want to have displayed (you know, like cans of food, all the cups and glasses, . . . . I could go on. 2. Faux finishes are not going away. Why? Because quartz, which offers an almost infinite look, are hands down better for countertops because unlike marble or granite: they’re not porous so don’t need to be treated until you die, they are almost impervious to stains, and the finishes can match what you want, not what the earth gave up.

the all white kitchen is timeless , what is not timeless is very shiny surfaces in my opinion . so a white kitchen will be more soft looking with mat surfaces, mat tiles and combined with wood is always nice
All white can look very institutional. But it's so easy to add a bit of personalization, color, and character to it. A few small seasonal wreaths hung on some of the cabinet doors that can be changed as often as one wants, or a vase of fresh cut flowers is always welcome. Vinyl stickers can be used to add cabinet door accents but removed or changed as the owner wishes. Decor for July 4th could be red/white/blue swags hung on the cabinet doors and a short vase filled with small American flags. My personal opinion of tile in the kitchen is, "Never Again!". I love tile, But not as much as I hate grout. When I get around to remodeling my kitchen and dining area, the flooring will be the highest grade of sheet vinyl I can possibly afford, It's one solid waterproof surface with no crack or crevice to leak or for dirt to embed into. There will be a floor drain just under the toe kick in the sink/dishwasher area. Even major spills can be more easily dealt with followed by a "dry mop", and an overflowing dishwasher or sink will no longer be a threat to adjoining rooms. The article was aimed at the "discerning client" whose financial means are far greater than mine. But no one seems to be talking about stainless steel counter tops anymore. Certainly not within my reach, but if I could........
It’s seems like a lot of these ideas really inhibit the function of the kitchen. If the design slows down the functioning of the kitchen, it just doesn’t make sense for people who actually USE their kitchen. If it’s just a fashion statement and goes unused most of the time, that’s an entirely different goal. For example, open shelving is super practical and is found in basically every commercial kitchen. From my point of view, we should move from highly functional kitchens (the commercial sort found in restaurants) and adapt those ideas to residential kitchens.
9:21 "...when you can take down a wall..." You're right, it's another trade-off. My 83-square-foot galley would lose the wall with my cooking appliances, fridge, wall cabinets, and OTR.
I think backsplash tiles are fine as long as they're controlled. Generally, I think brick patterns, simple subway patterns, and some of new stylized mosaics of mixed porcelain/marble with metals like brass are fine. Simple is the key as long as it's reflective of restrained current trends. I wouldn't give up on it. I prefer fully-covered backslash walls to the older 4-inch backslash board thst ran along the back wall. I think covering them is here to stay. The solid marble/quartz slabs that match countertops are very desirable. I dislike having the drywall behind the counter exposed to food splatters. I recall watching an old Doris Day movie, "It Happened to Jane," decades ago. They showed the kitchen in her Maine fishing town house and she had solid, painted wood on the back wall over her countertop. I decided then that I wanted to cover my back wall, too. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to it yet, but my mind hasn't changed thst that wall should be covered. I move slower than the lobsters! 🤣
The Carrera marble island with the slope would be greatly enjoyed in my family. I have no, zero doubt that the kids ( and probably dogs) would joyfully race down that slope, slipping and sliding all the way.
A white kitchen will never go out of style people who actually use kitchens like the fact that you can see dirt right away. You know it’s clean. It’s not for everyone but for those that want it it’s timeless. While taking out top cabinets sounds cool, it is storage that hides clutter, again might be nice looking for those that don’t cook but ppl that cook have ugly stuff that needs a home.
Thanks for the great channel! I'm joining the party late, but I really want to comment on that large herringbone that bothers you and you don't know why. Here are my reasons...it's the combination with the surrounding tile. There are small grey horizontal tiles. There are smaller vertical high-contrast white tiles. Then there are huge herringbone tiles. And if this wasn't enough confusion, it is a combination of white, black, and two shades of grey. Just TOO much! If they did the horizontal sections in the same large grey as the herringbone and maybe even the vertical border in small grey tiles, it should be better. Or if they could do the whole thing in grey with just the size change. But I think best for herringbone would be to do it all in the large multi-color pattern, with the narrow white border. I'm not a fan of brick of any kind in the first place, but this is a fun exercise in using pattern and color. Thanks for the opportunity.
My favorite kitchen would be totally separate from the house with Soapstone counter tops and lots of wall cabinets and a huge pantry, with an area for the family to eat. The main house would have a area for guests to eat and a butler's pantry.
Polished chrome, satin nickel are the go-to handles for white but since white kitchens going out of the trend..... Well maybe it's the white cabinets with black handles and vinyl checkerboard black and white flooring
I do think herringbone is trendy. I did this in a white kitchen with black hardware....oops...haha, and now 3 years later to me it sort of does look like the end of the road. Herringbone floors got super popular and that I do love but IMO leave it on the floor. great video! thanks!

I’m still having black accesories, but in my bathroom. For the kitchen I will have no handles. I also am doing in my kitchen big tiles instead of small tiles simply because of ease of clean…I just prefer to have less grout in my kitchen…I think having big tiles will make for a faster cleaning. I’m doing my kitchen in modern style…I don’t care, but with matte finishes (not glossy). Let’s see how it will go…hopefully not too many finger prints all the time. I’m doing fake wood for the counters because wood is just so sensitive…
white kitchens are like white walls...a totally safe colour that will never go out of style, and reflects the most light which is good for mood. You cannot say the same for any other colour or wood tone. Open kitchens are like open shelves...you have to keep them super clean to keep the living room looking serene...kitchens are for work...living rooms are for relaxing. Matt black is going out because it is overused and is faux wrought iron. Rubbed bronze or wrought iron, natural metal is timeless because it is real not faux.

I ultimately might very well ignore my blind corner ( cabinet) .Hmmm, I found a bundt pan, an electric skillet, a few baking pans, pushed them further into the corner, no seriously, I took the flashlight into the dark hole and it deserves a burial. Maybe a blanket. I actually put the stuff from the fridge & freezer in a crisper drawer for 24 hrs in that cubby, until the new fridge was delivered. Saved $300.00 on gaining space. Buh byebye bundt pan.
Our current kitchen is an 8'x10' gally with an attached dining that is 11'x12'. That's just to small for our family of 7. We are constantly bumping into eachother. We are currently looking at a 4500sq ft hall that has a 13'x29' kitchen. Looking to see if it's in our budget to make it a house. Can't wait to have space where we aren't constantly in someone's way.

Trends come and go like a revolving door, go with what you love, you’re the one that has to live with it.
I think a lot if these "on the way out trends" are fueled by designers who made a lot of money having people take down walls (for instance) and now want to make a lot of money having people put them back up.
I think you're on to something.
One of my most difficult tasks is to decide what features to include and how elaborate. My process is always a twisted curvy path of back and forth on options. Usually (being the operative word) I get it kinda ok ;)

Re white kitchens, easy, bring color into it via decorations and tile backsplash, problem solved. Re open concept kitchens, don’t be lazy, keep your kitchen clean, problem solved. Re matte black hardware, not my taste but it’s easily changeable so no big deal, do what you like. Re wall cabinets, if you have the ability to have windows there instead, definitely go for it but most houses aren’t built that way, so enjoy your upper wall cabinets storage. (Wish I had the windows). Forget the shelves unless it’s a rarely used kitchen. Re faux finishes, if it looks good and can be sanitary (not loving painted countertops). Re herringbone, just personal preference, agree with not making the colors too bold. Re Carrera Marble, another perfect marble product for those who don’t use their kitchen, aka, don’t cook with tomato sauce, I worry about staining. Re appliances over the range, for those that only have that space available, it’s a must, but if there is another location available, use it. Re contemporary aesthetic, agree, since you are contemporaneous designing your kitchen, you’ll always be correct. Re farmhouse style, I believe it’s tied to the political value of bring back the past, keeping women barefoot and pregnant with no innovation allowed. Re tile backsplash, this is your opportunity to bring style into your kitchen so choose carefully. Tiles are easy to clean. If you can afford slab, go for it. Re ultra modern design, there will always be those who prefer a streamline look, let them have it, it’s their kitchen! Note that the new Samsung Bespoke line is ultra modern and selling well. I use the one column Bespoke refrigerator in my pantry as an overflow.
I don't know how the average person can do without wall cabinets. Wall shelves can be attractive if styled correctly, but again, most people, the average person, needs cabinetry for storage. Otherwise shelves can looked cluttered and become something else to clean and dust.
Every list of every “what’s going out of style for this year” since I started following the design world (around 2008) has included the all white kitchen. Every year they keep saying it and every year they have to keep saying it because the white kitchen never goes out of style. It’s classic. Certain iterations of all white kitchens go out of style, like maybe distressed antique white cabinets with scrolling milk work, that feels a little 2005. But a fresh white kitchen will always be in style.
So true! I built my house in 1996 and the model had an amazing all white kitchen. I didn’t get it because it was a substantial upgrade and I was squeezing my tiny wallet into the neighborhood as it was. 28yrs and a whole home remodel later,I don’t regret not doing a all white for our home but I still like all white kitchens. Maybe next remodel in 15-20yrs.
The all white kitchen will feel more and more dated as the decade wears on, I think, because it feels so impersonal now, esp of super modern or minimal styles, but more warm elements can always be added: wood cutting boards, copper pots, etc.
because it’s no longer trending, doesn’t mean it’s no longer classy. Trends are mathematical-- to say it’s going to go out of style is different from going out, as far as kitchen designers reporting on the new trends are. And one of the things people are tired of and are no longer asking for en masse is a sterile, streamlined, all white kitchen. Will white kitchens still be beautiful, done well? Of course!
The thing I hate about “trends” is their one ultimate goal of getting you to part with your money by making you feel guilty about not “being in style” year after year.

I I think the lesson here is avoid “hot trends” for kitchens. Do what’s functional, do what’s lasted the test of time, do what you want, and do quality. Some of these are ridiculous…the hardware keeps changing like every year. The upper cabinets “being out” is a luxury that most people cannot afford, spare, or manage. People need the storage, it is a losing battle to keep those open shelves dust free and pretty. My kitchen is pretty tiny..,I can’t imagine getting rid of my uppers unless I sacrificed my whole living room to be a massive island
But a missive island in your living room does sound pretty awesome. lol
I like to decorate according to the architecture of the home and whether the rooms face North, South, East or West, and the amount of light in my rooms. I never run with the trends.

The microwave over the range can be dangerous, completely inaccessible to anyone with mobility issues and wheelchair use and/or children potentially falling on a possibly hot range. A glass cooktop could break if a dish falls on it.
1. White Kitchens - classic, will never go out. Every year they say it’s going out and every year it’s still here going strong.
2. Open concept - here to stay. Functional.
3. Matte Black Hardware - can read farmhouse, which is definitely out. Can be done in a way that feels fresh, depends on the other elements in the kitchen. I prefer other finishes
4. Wall Cabinets - to be replaced by open shelving?!? Nope. A wall without upper cabinets I can get behind. Open shelving is dated. Very specific, curated, open shelving you can get away with. I’d rather put my kitchen clutter behind closed (beautiful cabinet) doors
5. Faux finishes - “not 3, faux finishes” 😂. Faux finishes are never “in” style. It’s what we do when the real thing doesn’t fit the budget. Do your best in your own budget.
6. Herringbone - I like herringbone. I hope it sticks around a while longer
7. Carrera marble - maybe I’d say marbles with warmer tone veins rather than carrera’s cooler tone veins are more “in.” I’m still behind quartz or quartzite
8. Appliances over the range - will never go out in small kitchens. Also, GE Cafe over the range microwave is 😍
9. Contemporary style - still in. It is a broad design style with many different iterations. Different iterations go in and out but not contemporary overall
10. Farmhouse - out, overdone
11. Backsplash tile - stone slabs as backsplash are more “on trend.” But not everyone has the budget for that and there are plenty of backdplash tile choices that are “on trend” too (zellige handmade tile for example). Tile backsplash will never go away
12. Ultra-modern is a broad design style. See contemporary style.

50 years ago no one wanted an all white kitchen. They are definitely looking sterile and dated.
Hi 👋 Point 2 - Open concept. With rising energy costs I think spaces will reduce (ceiling height as well) in order to keep those costs down. An alternative I have seen a couple of architecturally designed homes is where they have used sliding glass doors within the open concept for this reason.

Where I live, white kitchens are still the go to, especially if you are planning to sell. Besides, I still love a white kitchen and that is what matters to me. At this point in my life (early 60s), I really don't care whether something is "dated" or not. I'm going with what is functional for me as well as what makes me happy.
I'm 70, and trendy doesn't matter to me at all. My daughter, an interior designer, designed me an all white kitchen. I love it, not because it was on trend at the time, but because it was so gorgeous. I can put colour into it at any time with tablecloths, cushions (I have room for 2 comfy chairs), flowers, dishes etc. My kitchen is huge, with tons of natural light, so I don't need white to make the room bright. I just love the white, period.
And, I'm looking for an rv to place on my son's farm for when I visit. Although I don't like the yellow in oak, I do like some of the models with dark wood. I find it looks upscale. I've seen new rv's with all grey/white, and it just doesn't feel homey to me. And rv's don't have tons of natural light...but still prefer the dark wood.
It's just me.
That being said, I got a bunch of used white cabinets from a freind that I'm putting into my accessory apartment. I might paint those, to be determined. Maybe very light grey or sand? Or I could redo them white, as they'll need some touchup to cover some of the wear and tear from use and from the transport to my home. I'll have to McIver these cabinets to fit into my existing space, so this You Tube channel will be invaluable to me. I will have to put together one corner unit from straight units.

As a legally blind woman who cooks daily, I need an all-white or very, very light kitchen for the contrast it provides against everything else. I want an IKEA kitchen so badly! I am unable to get down to bottom cabinets which have doors instead of drawers. Those should be eliminated forever. I bring in color with my kitchen towels. I don’t like open concept because upholstered furniture soaks up food odors. If I could, I’d gut my kitchen and start over using my own needs to guide design. Function before form!

You bring forward a point I never thought about before... "open concept is bad because upholstered furniture soaks up food odors". I was juggling about my total open concept (on my house plan) or 'closing' my kitchen with a couple folding glass doors (that would give me the extra possibility of having stained glass on the transoms windows I will install on top of them - oooohhhh I'm excited).
So be it. Folding doors will separate the kitchen and the dining room.

I like the open kitchen going into my eating area, (I don't have a formal dining room) but not into my living area. I don't like the idea of guests coming in and seeing my kitchen right away. I like my kitchen to be something someone has to go on a treasure hunt to find. lol

I have to tell you I love your no nonsense and practical take on "trends", your witty commentary and sense of humor when it comes to people with unlimited budgets opinions on what kitchens should look like at any given time. That's what I am thinking. Who has the money to keep up these styles and on top of that they try to make people feel bad because they may have last year's trends.
I love white kitchens with wood floors and butcher block counters and lots of pops of color in the other decor items. I also like a separate kitchen and dining room. I love old homes (mine is over 100 years old) and open concept only works with large cased doorways between living room and dining room, not kitchen and dining room.
Having no wall cabinets only works if you have the space, and if you have no kids. You need those high hiding spots where your little raccoons can't reach so easily.
Yeah. My problem is my kids are all tall enough to find my treats now. lol

It's okay for me to have an open kitchen to the eating area but when it opens to the living room, ugh! Looks like an open barn. I like rooms to be more separate. I do me, you do you and everyone is happy😊.

done correctly herringbone is beautiful and herringbone is a classic pattern. however personally I like the solid piece for ease of cleaning.
Its personal taste i know but for me, solid backsplash seems to lack character. Grout lines add interest and dimension. As for cleaning, ive never come across that being a problem if the grout is properly sealed or is one of the high tech acrylic or epoxy grouts.
The two I feel strongly about are the first two. White kitchens are fantastic blank templates. You can play with wall color more as well as backsplash and hardware. Basically, you can choose something else to focus on. Open concepts are great for new builds. I don’t see it going away based on cost effectiveness for new homes. Less walls less time and resources.
I'm going with a white/light gray granite backsplash with some darker gray flow bands (_schlieren,_ our German structural geologist friends would call them, with some small but vibrant red garnet crystals in the matrix. contrasting with dark gray "blue pearl" countertops.
A half-billion years in the future, geophysicists of whatever intelligent species has succeeded our successors as the dominant life form on this planet will wonder what sequence of orogenic upheavals brought the Norwegian anorthosite (blue pearl) into contact with the Brazilian ashen white granite.

As far as open kitchens go, I think it’s fine to have an open kitchen to a dining area. I do not, however, like the kitchen open to a living space. I custom built a home in 2007, and even then, was remorseful of designing it with an open kitchen to the living space. The noise and clatter from the kitchen spilling into a room meant for relaxing or many who are watching something on tv, is just a big turn off. I own a significantly smaller home now, and like that the kitchen is separated from the living space. It is open to a small dining/fireplace addition, and that looks nice.
I thought herringbone just came in 😆 Don't people know you can't switch out tile like an old T-Shirt. I think its the color/tile more than the pattern. Certain colors (white) will always be timeless.
I’m a retired interior designer and “love my all-white kitchen! You can pretty well put any color in it as accent and it will look great. Also, I can see so much better.

I grew up in the country so for me farmhouse I love. It feels more welcoming and cozy. I don't want my house to feel like a cold business office, it's not cozy. I've seen more people like the large subway tile in straight rows now. I don't like it, I think it looks awful. I like the smaller tile offset.
1. Our kitchen cabinets will be soft white shaker with butcher block counters. Backsplash is subway tile in soft mint green glass. Hardwood floors throughout.
2. I am claustrophobic…there’s no way I’m spending my day in a closed room. Also, grandchildren without supervision? Legos in my kitchen? Not a chance…
3. The only thing with black finish is that hard water leaves huge white stains on it. I like the look of it way better than gold. We did the oil rubbed bronze in our old house. I like either.

5. I would love to do soapstone or a recycled glass countertop but it’s too costly…butcher block is what we be using since we can make it from wood milled on our farm.
6. I’m thinking about subway tile in mint green glass (remember white cabinets) but a smooth flat surface behind the stove. What is scary is those massive art backsplash pieces from Etsy.
7. Marble is so heavy. It stains like crazy. My daughter had it in her apartment and hated it. I would like something cold like marble in one small area for rolling pastry dough.
8. OTR…can’t reach it, can’t clean it, hate it. Wall microwaves should be 3” below your shoulder top. I’m 4’11” so that means the microwave should be around 3’8” or 8” above the stove…so no.
9. I’m old enough to have lived through all of these. Ultra modern does not feel homey and warm. I want it to look (and be) clean but warm. Dark cabinets and cabinets are also incredibly hard to keep clean because you can’t see all of the dirt. Farmhouse style works well for me as I live in an old farmhouse…but those stupid word art things have to go. If I could afford it, I would do farmhouse with an AGA or Elmira stove.
10. Tile is affordable…slab stone is not. What I do hate is contrasting grout or wide grout lines. Another alternative would be a poured resin.
11. Yuck…reminds me of a alien spaceship or a hospital (if it’s white). However, that could all be warmed up with some plants.
If herringbone only lasted a year or two, IMHO it is not so obsequious that it will “date” a kitchen. Dating happens when one looks at your kitchen your materials choices indicate when it was built or remodeled.
All white kitchens may not be “trendy” right now. But saying white kitchens are going out of style is like saying black cars are going out of style. Not a chance.
People realized during the pandemic that cooking in your living room is hot, smelly and loud. That’s why they are putting up walls again. Open kitchens are fine if you live alone or rarely cook. But nobody cares how their kitchen photographs for instagram when they have everyone trying to work, do online school and relax in one big room with a sink and exhaust fan going.

Open shelving while beautiful is such a PIA to keep things clean from the greasy kitchen dust that invariably happens near the stove... regardless of how good your range hood is :P I would keep uppers because i always need more storage and maybe some open shelving far away from the stove area.... IMHO i don't worry about trends .... i just choose finishes that make me happy and i end up with a gothic modern farmhouse mix.... black, white, skulls etc etc LOL
Yes, open shelving for storage is enormously unsanitary. People do it to save the cost of upper cabinetry, and then try to excuse that by claiming it's on point design wise A small shelf somewhere in your kitchen for display/styling only is okay, but a whole kitchen full of open wall shelves is not. As for resale, I would never buy a house where open shelves substitute for cabinets with a door. As a kitchen designer, I 100% discourage clients from using open shelves for storage.
Looking to get very light wood cabinets rather than white. Something like a white oak. You get the light coloring that a white gives and the warmth of wood.
I have a small kitchen and I decided to do my kitchen "restaurant style." For me that meant white cabinets, gray countertop, white subway backsplash, and all brushed/stainless hardware. I have a restaurant style faucet (the kind with the spring that you can pull away and clean your entire sink), and the countertop is granite with a marble-ish look. I decided not to go with quartz because it's not as heat resistant as natural stone. White cabinets have been popular since at least the 50s, and except for the natural ebb and flow of whatever is trending, have always come back into style, albeit with some things different (such as no painted steel cabinets like there were in the 50s), but white is classic and will always be a part of the kitchen decorating dynamic imo.
I never buy into "trends" for the reasons many commenters gave. It seems to be a money grab to encourage people to stay on trend. I don't give two hoots (UA-cam safe) with what's "on trend." I do what I like and my small kitchen is very attractive. Of course, the Ruby red BlueStar range with the stainless backsplash and the huge vent overhead might have a little to do with the attractiveness!
I have stainless, white, or red decorative accents, and that makes me happy. Because I can change the accent at any time. Most of my small appliances are either white or stainless. So there you go. I'm not a trend follower and never have been.
I never liked the idea of open shelving in the kitchen because a busy kitchen is going to throw all kinds of grease, attract dust, etc. All of those things on the open shelving would have to be washed on a fairly regular basis.
I've never understood the hate against farmhouse style. I think it's kind of cool, but then again that's me.
I agree 110% regarding open shelving … especially if its used to store supposedly clean plates, cups, glasses etc. i shudder when i go into someones home and they offer me a drink in a cup or glass thats been sitting in on an open shelf. If its a shelf occupied by a plant or something non food related, i do like that look.

I guess this stuff is going out of style among rich people in LA, who are definitely a very narrow demographic! I think having no wall cabinets is only a good option for people with big kitchens with room for an island with storage or for two or even three walls of base cabinets, or for extreme minimalists with little to store. I have a fairly narrow, enclosed kitchen with no room for an island, so I need my upper cabinets!
I agree and I don't like open shelves because it looks like clutter. I would have wall cabinets even with a large kitchen.
Oh, the good news is my kitchen cabinets arrived this week and are being installed as we speak! So pretty. Porcelain countertop fabricator MAY be over next week for templating.
It’s not the whole kitchen that needs to be whíte, just the cabinets, it’s a timeless look and easy to update around the cabinets.
Hi Mark, renovated my kitchen 7 or 8 yrs ago. No wall cabinets on 2 sides, high built-in cabinets on one side with built-in oven, microwave, fridge. Though cook and bake a lot, I don’t miss the wall cabinets. Love prepping and cooking without those things in front of my face. I’m also short (5’2”) so I benefit greatly on storing my things in the drawers.
One thing I don't like about the open kitchen is my guests will go in my kitchen and start washing dishes. I want my guests to not even think about dishes and just have a good time, but so many of my friends also like to bring a dish and sometimes like to put the finishing touches in my kitchen. They like to share in the cooking process...so the open kitchen is better for that. I need upper cabinets regardless of trends. I like a timeless design and I think white is always nice, but I prefer an accent color with white. TFS
Open cabinets seem unsanitary, especially if you have animals.. Not to mention the dust. You crack me up! 😂
I grew up with a closed kitchen and hated it. My current home is open concept and I love it! Maybe columns or partial walls are okay, but I will never personally want a closed kitchen again. If I were ever to build my dream house, it would definitely have a butler's pantry. And I don't leave dirty dishes lying around. Matte black hardware is timeless! This person is nuts! Open shelves are going out of style for good reason. Stuff gets dirty on open shelving. Marble is too hard to maintain although it is beautiful. I disagree with this one. Excuse me, but subway tile is classic and timeless.

All white kitchen can look cold or boring. however mixed with Gold and a little wood can be life alternating for it
The above the range microwave is for those of us who have absolutely no other place to put a huge appliance in our kitchens. Oh how nice it would be to have a kitchen large enough to not need to have the microwave above the range.
Herringbone has become victim of the tacky chevron fabric and paint rage of the past few decades. It was always a beautiful expression of a classic tile pattern. Now it's chevron-ish. That green, black, and white stove back wall is a chevron/herringbone crime.
Kitchens need to be divided into two classes. Kitchens people will cook in, and kitchens that are just for looks. When you see a really pretty kitchen, the owners usually say, "Oh, we don't cook." I talked to a contractor once who was angry about customers who wanted a perfectly fine, up-to-date kitchen demolished and replaced just because they were bored. If they would start cooking, they wouldn't be bored anymore.
13:00 I ordered enough oil-rubbed bronze handles for my kitchen project when I bought my copper under-mount sink and oil-rubbed bronze faucet set. Simple rectangular pulls with rounded ends and no finials will give the right contrast with the white slab-front cabinets and dark blue horizontal countertop surfaces and black porcelain cooktop.
Trade off to no wall cabinets that I like the best is to have a few shallow pantry cabinets and leave the rest of the walls open. The pantry cabinets more than make up for the loss of wall
cabinets and I think looks a lot sleeker. I think it works best when you have a rather large island to make up for the loss of the counter space that you get from using tall cabinets.
My daughter is building a house and she wanted double ovens.. meaning the microwave has to go over the stove. I have had it for years and it’s ok , but in my next house I don’t want it there. My mom had it but could t use it after she had shoulder surgery so she had to get a countertop one just for her. The rest of us used the one over the stove.
I’ve noticed the young parents want open kitchens to keep an eye on kiddos, but when all grow up they want to get away and have privacy.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I recently saw some UA-cam videos on freestanding kitchen where some cabinets are on legs and some on wheels. I think these ideas are very interesting and like them, being some one who loves to move furniture around once in a long while. Please share what you think of freestanding kitchen.
I know in South Africa they are quite popular (and probably other parts of the world), but in NA a completely freestanding kitchen could be possible, just not the norm. I certainly like freestanding elements and I love the look of legs on cabinets. Maybe a mixture of both is a good fit for many homeowners who want the flexibility.
The mid-century better homes had a formal front livingroom, a formal diningroom, a back family room, and a spacious eat-in kitchen. Much better for unannounced visitors.
The lesser mid-century homes (like mine) has a partition wall between the livingroom and combination kitchen/dining area.
I can still open my door wide to the occassional neighbor that comes knocking, without feeling caught in an untidy kitchen. My partition wall blocks the view of the functional part of the kitchen (sink, fridge, sto ve) from the seating arrangement in the livingroom. I wouldn't give up my partition wall for an open concept fleeting trend. I know better.
Open concept is a gimmicky cheap build, promoted as trendy. Ugh.
When we got married in 1976, we could only afford used furniture, and some of that furniture (now antique) is still in our home. I love the softness of it. I hate the kitchens you show because every one of them has super-sharp, cheap machined edges on EVERYTHING.
(Well maybe not the appliances. ) You can veneer it, you can use marble, you can built an island, but it all says "factory." When I had new cabinets made for my 1913 kitchen, I told the cabinet shop to take 1/16 inch of the edges of the cabinets doors and frames. It makes a difference.
I like oil rubbed bronze for cabinet hardware, not for faucets, etc. I also like bright brass hardware. But I’d still opt for stainless or nickel for a faucet.
I'm using an oil-rubbed bronze faucet because ti will go better with the hammered copper double-bowl sink under the dark color granite countertop.
1) white kitchen-classic, but not for me. I enjoy the warmth of wood or even some of the colored cabinets. I do like the white kitchens that offer textures in tile and cabinets.
2) open floor plan-currently have one, enjoyed it initially, would now prefer to have more separation.
3) matte black hardware. It has its place in design. I like it. My hubby doesn't. We don't have it, lol.
4)wall cabinets-I do like the idea of having more windows and would remove upper cabinets to achieve this, as long as I have storage, but I don't like open shelving. (I don't like dusting, hah)
5)faux finishes- I have no skills and would never attempt it. Done well, it can look lovely for a fraction of the cost. Pre-made faux materials are excellent for cost savings.
6)herringbone back splash-nice way to add texture and interest, especially with simple tile.
7)Carrera marble- classic, but I prefer more color and would probably not choose it for myself.
8)appliances over range. I have a microwave hood. If I could, I would have a free standing microwave on a shelf. We've been through a couple of them either because the microwave broke or the electric panel that controlled the light shorted out and would cost as much as a new appliance. Great space saver, if you need it.
9)contemporary-styles come and go. I like it. (actually I like parts of many different styles, so I'd say I was eclectic)
10)farmhouse- I also like this style.
11)tile back splash- sorry they are here to stay. It offers so many options for simple & plain to crazy patterned. I love color and pattern so I'd go crazy if my hubby let me! (he won't, oh well, 😄)
12) ultra modern-cool and interesting but I would never go in this direction.
*My style is eclectic and colorful, but I can totally appreciate other peoples design choices.
Life should be enjoyed. Decorate in a way that makes you happy.💕

All-white kitchens, no matter how nice the materials, always makes me feel like I'm in a vacant apartment. You know the place: 40 year old cabinetry that's been painted so many times the doors stick to the cabinet and the only break from the visual sea of white noise is the boob light on the ceiling. I can't get that feeling to go away when I'm in an all-white kitchen. I get the "it looks clean," but it's never felt clean in a lived-in way to me.
2:00 Not that I want all white, but white cabinets with contrasting countertops is a good compromise, and gives a fine backdrop for pops of color such as Edsel fire-engine red toaster or apple-green stand mixer or a stainless OTR above a black porcelain cooktop.

I like white or off white kitchens. I like kitchens with light wooden cabinets. As another commenter said, look at your home and consider your personal taste, then choose accordingly. I massively prefer open plan kitchen, dining, living. I’ll never go back to separate kitchens.
I would never have a whole lot of open shelves. They are a massive pain to keep clean and the vast majority do not have staff. And why waste that valuable space. As for vignettes… 🙄 And I’m tall. Wall cabinets are far better for me.

Designing my new kitchen now and am having a very large window installed so no upper cabinets there but will have them on the other two walls.

Lol. Renovating is expensive! We just had our condo completely renovated in 2022 and have an all white kitchen. We add colour ourselves! No way I care about Forbes saying it’s out! We have open concept (it’s a CONDO!) and surprise, surprise…we have matte black hardware! We also have quartz (in a Carerra marble look)because it was more realistic for us than marble! We have an over-the range microwave. I never use it but it is the best solution. We are so out!

Getting rid of wall cabinets.
1. In a smaller or medium kitchen you usually need the storage. As for shelves, they collect dust and i neither have the desire or time to make it always straight and neat. Im way to anal for that. I read that article and thought this is some hotsy NY designer most likely who has a maid and a chef. Re the pic with windows on both sides. I love those windows. If i had to pick between uppers or windows , i would eat off paper plates and do take out if i had to . I love windowssss in a kitchen.
Microwave might be ugly,but it great when you have no counter space.
Electrician had all my electric off all day and night yesterday (switch over to the new box). No power, no modem, no wi-fi, no microwave... Fortunately, I like to read and have plenty of battery-powered camping lights! Sad to have missed this one though.
herringbone has many crevices to clean, so personally, I would opt out...Something with fewer crevices to clean is more functional and has less maintainance

It’s all subjective, so luckily we still have complete control over the look of our own kitchens. I agree with many of the dated trends. But two of the vanishing trends pushed in the Forbes article that you reference are nonsense:
1. Closed upper cabinets are not going away. Why? Because the open cabinets alternative are massive dust collectors, inefficient (very small depth), reduce significantly the amount of storage available, and expose stuff most people don’t want to have displayed (you know, like cans of food, all the cups and glasses, . . . . I could go on.
2. Faux finishes are not going away. Why? Because quartz, which offers an almost infinite look, are hands down better for countertops because unlike marble or granite: they’re not porous so don’t need to be treated until you die, they are almost impervious to stains, and the finishes can match what you want, not what the earth gave up.

I hate ultra modern/contemporary kitchens with too many windows. I love comfortable, easy to work in kitchens with a homey feel.
the all white kitchen is timeless , what is not timeless is very shiny surfaces in my opinion . so a white kitchen will be more soft looking with mat surfaces, mat tiles and combined with wood is always nice
Yeah. That does sounds very nice. Ultra shiny is getting old.
All white can look very institutional. But it's so easy to add a bit of personalization, color, and character to it. A few small seasonal wreaths hung on some of the cabinet doors that can be changed as often as one wants, or a vase of fresh cut flowers is always welcome. Vinyl stickers can be used to add cabinet door accents but removed or changed as the owner wishes. Decor for July 4th could be red/white/blue swags hung on the cabinet doors and a short vase filled with small American flags.
My personal opinion of tile in the kitchen is, "Never Again!". I love tile, But not as much as I hate grout. When I get around to remodeling my kitchen and dining area, the flooring will be the highest grade of sheet vinyl I can possibly afford, It's one solid waterproof surface with no crack or crevice to leak or for dirt to embed into. There will be a floor drain just under the toe kick in the sink/dishwasher area. Even major spills can be more easily dealt with followed by a "dry mop", and an overflowing dishwasher or sink will no longer be a threat to adjoining rooms.
The article was aimed at the "discerning client" whose financial means are far greater than mine. But no one seems to be talking about stainless steel counter tops anymore. Certainly not within my reach, but if I could........
It’s seems like a lot of these ideas really inhibit the function of the kitchen. If the design slows down the functioning of the kitchen, it just doesn’t make sense for people who actually USE their kitchen. If it’s just a fashion statement and goes unused most of the time, that’s an entirely different goal.
For example, open shelving is super practical and is found in basically every commercial kitchen. From my point of view, we should move from highly functional kitchens (the commercial sort found in restaurants) and adapt those ideas to residential kitchens.
I think there might be a reason why people in the design world aren't necessarily looking to Forbes for creative direction.

You're right, it's another trade-off. My 83-square-foot galley would lose the wall with my cooking appliances, fridge, wall cabinets, and OTR.
I think backsplash tiles are fine as long as they're controlled. Generally, I think brick patterns, simple subway patterns, and some of new stylized mosaics of mixed porcelain/marble with metals like brass are fine. Simple is the key as long as it's reflective of restrained current trends. I wouldn't give up on it. I prefer fully-covered backslash walls to the older 4-inch backslash board thst ran along the back wall. I think covering them is here to stay. The solid marble/quartz slabs that match countertops are very desirable. I dislike having the drywall behind the counter exposed to food splatters.
I recall watching an old Doris Day movie, "It Happened to Jane," decades ago. They showed the kitchen in her Maine fishing town house and she had solid, painted wood on the back wall over her countertop. I decided then that I wanted to cover my back wall, too. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to it yet, but my mind hasn't changed thst that wall should be covered. I move slower than the lobsters! 🤣
I just finished my backsplash. 3x6 subway and I lined them up, so no brick pattern, looks really good.
The Carrera marble island with the slope would be greatly enjoyed in my family. I have no, zero doubt that the kids ( and probably dogs) would joyfully race down that slope, slipping and sliding all the way.
Open shelving is great if you eat out every meal and have a maid to dust.
A white kitchen will never go out of style people who actually use kitchens like the fact that you can see dirt right away. You know it’s clean. It’s not for everyone but for those that want it it’s timeless. While taking out top cabinets sounds cool, it is storage that hides clutter, again might be nice looking for those that don’t cook but ppl that cook have ugly stuff that needs a home.
Can’t add wall cabinets later if you have open plan and all those windows on the outside walls! 😂
Thanks for the great channel! I'm joining the party late, but I really want to comment on that large herringbone that bothers you and you don't know why. Here are my reasons...it's the combination with the surrounding tile. There are small grey horizontal tiles. There are smaller vertical high-contrast white tiles. Then there are huge herringbone tiles. And if this wasn't enough confusion, it is a combination of white, black, and two shades of grey. Just TOO much! If they did the horizontal sections in the same large grey as the herringbone and maybe even the vertical border in small grey tiles, it should be better. Or if they could do the whole thing in grey with just the size change. But I think best for herringbone would be to do it all in the large multi-color pattern, with the narrow white border. I'm not a fan of brick of any kind in the first place, but this is a fun exercise in using pattern and color. Thanks for the opportunity.

My favorite kitchen would be totally separate from the house with Soapstone counter tops and lots of wall cabinets and a huge pantry, with an area for the family to eat. The main house would have a area for guests to eat and a butler's pantry.

I’m still having black accesories, but in my bathroom. For the kitchen I will have no handles. I also am doing in my kitchen big tiles instead of small tiles simply because of ease of clean…I just prefer to have less grout in my kitchen…I think having big tiles will make for a faster cleaning. I’m doing my kitchen in modern style…I don’t care, but with matte finishes (not glossy). Let’s see how it will go…hopefully not too many finger prints all the time. I’m doing fake wood for the counters because wood is just so sensitive…

white kitchens are like white walls...a totally safe colour that will never go out of style, and reflects the most light which is good for mood. You cannot say the same for any other colour or wood tone. Open kitchens are like open shelves...you have to keep them super clean to keep the living room looking serene...kitchens are for work...living rooms are for relaxing. Matt black is going out because it is overused and is faux wrought iron. Rubbed bronze or wrought iron, natural metal is timeless because it is real not faux.

I ultimately might very well ignore my blind corner ( cabinet) .Hmmm, I found a bundt pan, an electric skillet, a few baking pans, pushed them further into the corner, no seriously, I took the flashlight into the dark hole and it deserves a burial. Maybe a blanket. I actually put the stuff from the fridge & freezer in a crisper drawer for 24 hrs in that cubby, until the new fridge was delivered. Saved $300.00 on gaining space. Buh byebye bundt pan.
Our current kitchen is an 8'x10' gally with an attached dining that is 11'x12'. That's just to small for our family of 7. We are constantly bumping into eachother. We are currently looking at a 4500sq ft hall that has a 13'x29' kitchen. Looking to see if it's in our budget to make it a house. Can't wait to have space where we aren't constantly in someone's way.
