- Is this the most hated Mazda RX8 on the internet? Craig Taylor from Dyno Torque talks us around his infamous Mazda RX8 which he removed the weedy Renesis rotary engine and replaced with a 600hp GM 7.4ltr 454 LSX V8.

This has to be one of the most meticulously done LS swap into an RX8 out there. Can't hate something that makes good power and just works.

Sad apart. If Mazda would of or more correct could of. The renesis would of came from the floor with 300hp maybe even more. That's pretty huge from a n/a 1.3 rotary. But, I agree. This is a Huge upgrade

I don't have a vast amount of knowledge re car parts yet I have to say I was very surprised to hear your experience regarding after market engine fans especially given the amount and quality of fan upgrades available for PC cases. I'm sure you know what you're talking about though, so great work! I love it.
For those who are crying about ditching the rotary, the renesis is SHOCKING! Think of it as an apple pie, but instead of apple it was cooked with pebbles and toilet water.
Haha Word! :D Like we always say, we love a proper rotary, but a Renesis is just simply a massive pile of crap that sealed the fate of Rotary power in new cars for the rest of time.
@@driftworks I'm seeing people achieve 540whp with a boosted 13b msp. It has pros and cons. It is what it is. :)
@@sofakingdom3076 achieve is one thing, but for how long before it blows a side seal due to egt's. Also running boost with 10:1 isnt ideal in a rotary

I love the Renesis in the RX8, but after seeing this install I can totally see why an engine swap makes sense over an engine rebuild.

@Iron Scotsman Wankels use oil by design... They have to burn oil, otherwise they will seize... Like 2 strokes.
You get around 18mpg on a dorito, with a ls1 you can see 24st to 30highway mpg so yea you would when you think combined its about 27mpg

So are there any legal issues (emissions/inspections) with building a car like that in the UK? In the states, California is a nightmare, but here in Michigan we can do pretty much whatever we want...
Not really an issue here, we're very lucky. It's extremely difficult in a lot of European countries.

Mazda RX8 was on sale 2-3 years before the E90 plus it was first unveiled in 2000/01 so probably a coincidence.
I've always thought that these RX8s should have had a V6 option....now I gotta search for Mazda V6 swaps in these.

We don't I'm afraid. It requires a lot of custom fabrication.
Im really interested in hearing how this compares to the k swap one you are doing once the engine is finished in that car.
I have a built turbo k24 in my rx8 but still wish i went 6.0L ls with single turbo.
Craig will always love his V8's more I think.
I can't wrap my head round anyone hating on this... As said in the video the RX-8 is a lovely chassis hampered by frankly a crap engine (and I bloody love rotary engines). Just out of interest how much would a conversion like this cost if I provided the car? 🤔
The Fabrication would generally be upwards of around £6k, and you'd need to source your own complete engine and gearbox.
Driftworks ahhh, if only I was more mechanically minded. Still the 2JZ is quite a bit cheaper that the LSX....
The thing is that this is the only car with a rotary engine, and these idiots are taking RX8's, taking out the rotatires and effectively leaving less and less real rotary engined RX8 on the market. Get another car if you want pistons, this one should remain a rotary. It's like killing pandas.

I'm OK with a rx8 cause it has a poop engine and would prefer a ls rx8 but not a rx7

My question is why not take it out for a spin, BO BO BO BO BO BORING.
I'm not doing this swap but I am doing a 5.3ls swap with a t56 transmission. Definitely not using a Ford diff or axles because I had snapped way to many already on other vehicles. I'm going to rebuild the ls, upgrade internals, injectors. I'm either going to supercharge the engine or I will turbo. I'm hoping once I'm done which will take a little but once I'm done to be making around 800-1000hp

I LOVE that car. I can confirm from unfortunate experience RX8s with the factory engine are full-blown AIDS. Ignoring reliability, they're ridiculously gutless, even when rinsing them to 9k+.

It'd be a bit of a waste in an RX8, but yeah it'd sound cool.
do dyno torque sell a fitting kit? Did they have to move/ change the steering rack.
They don't. Each one is a custom fabrication job. This car had an RX7 rack fitted.
I thought it was a pz model for a sec, love Wankel engines but it’s so true what Craig says about them, my dads old rx8 was forever having issues starting
What ECU is being used in this build?
How did you get the engine to fit over the standard steering rack? Looking at putting an mx5 engine in my rx8 and it seems the rack will cause some issues with the big electric motors in the way

Swaps for these are great. Yeah the rotory is cool and all but if you want it for the long run its a lot of maintenance and 4k to get it rebuilt by a rotor specialist nah. Maybe like the first 80k cool I'd get it rebuilt but after that I'd through a ls or a 1/2j in there and call it a day

Driftworks RX8 is from 2002 onwards and E90 from 2004 onwards...

Yep! I'd still kill for a quad rotor in an old Porsche though. I just wouldn't trust it to always get me where I need to go :D.

i wanna do an engine swap with my rx8, i mean i haven't had anything go wrong with the rotory engine but i want something with a little more power, was it easy to put this engine in? or did you have to do modification to the frame?
It's not the most difficult swap, but it needs a lot of custom fabrication, FD Steering rack etc.

About £20,000 & a lot of patience 😄. Aside from the obvious engine & gearbox, ecu & the ability to do all the custom fabrication, I think this is converted to use an RX7 rack. There's loads.

As an RX7 guy this doesn't bother me, The renisis was a stillbirth and had too many design flaws in the S1 that I honestly don't really care. It would be cooler if they did an REW swap but meh.

May I ask what's the offset on those wheels? they fits absolutly perfect!!
I can't remember exactly, but the rear is a BMW M3 axle which is a different width, so it's not relevant to normal RX8's. We offer a load of wheels for standard RX8s that we can provide with this sort of fitment. Drop the guys in the office a message if you're interested 👍

I think its an great conversion, im a Rotary guy but in this Case i think ill let it pass. The Rx8 has an shitty Rotary if you compare it to the rx7 Rotary. He has reliability and a big Market of parts for the v8. It is his car so it's also his decision.

The only upside to the 13B REW is the turbo. Without turbo it is more shit than the 13B MSP.
Would love to see how that BMW diff conversion was done.
Basically the E92 M3 complete rear axle was swapped in. The two front subframe to chassis mounts had to be changed to suit the RX-8 Chassis if I remember correctly.

Interesting you don’t like aftermarket electric fans. My car has a stock viscous fan, what’s a good oem electric fan that’s available in the uk that I could use?
Almost anything that will fit. We use a huge diesel Jag fan on our S15 and we had massive issues with it overcooling the car initially. We now control it through the ECU and it's great, however it pulls ALOT of amps.

When I watched this video now, I regret that I haven't bought a English RX8 with a broken engine for 500 EUR in Belgium where I live. It feels sad when I did listen too much to swaphaters on school but whatever. If you got the chance to buy some car for a very low price like I almost did this then buy it!

Are there many companies in the UK that offer LS Swaps for the RX8 and if so how much would the full build cost, fabrication, engine and gearbox and all needed components?
Hi, you're looking at £12k+ for parts and labour. This ones more like £18k.
Driftworks tragically that's a little out of my price range.
Will have to wait until I've won the lottery.
Is there no way to bring the price down at all? Reconditioned engine and gearbox perhaps?
