Sad apart. If Mazda would of or more correct could of. The renesis would of came from the floor with 300hp maybe even more. That's pretty huge from a n/a 1.3 rotary. But, I agree. This is a Huge upgrade
For those who are crying about ditching the rotary, the renesis is SHOCKING! Think of it as an apple pie, but instead of apple it was cooked with pebbles and toilet water.
Haha Word! :D Like we always say, we love a proper rotary, but a Renesis is just simply a massive pile of crap that sealed the fate of Rotary power in new cars for the rest of time.
In my research I hve found out, there are several popular engine swaps enthusiasts choose, replacing the rotary engine (13B-MSP Renesis) with conventional piston engines for better reliability, more torque, and often more horsepower. Below are some common engine swap options for the Mazda RX-8: 1. LS V8 Engine Swap (Chevrolet) - Engines: LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, LS7, LSX (Various displacements) - Power Potential: 350-700+ HP - Why It's Popular: The LS engine family is one of the most common swaps for the RX-8 due to its compact size, availability, reliability, and massive aftermarket support. It provides a significant power boost and torque improvement over the rotary engine. 2. 2JZ-GTE (Toyota Supra Engine) - Engine: 3.0L Twin-Turbo Inline-6 - Power Potential: 300-1000+ HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The 2JZ engine is known for its incredible strength and ability to handle high horsepower builds. This engine can produce massive amounts of power, and the aftermarket support is extensive, making it a strong choice for an RX-8 swap. 3. K20/K24 (Honda) - Engines: K20A, K20Z, K24A (from Honda Civic Type R, Acura TSX, etc.) - Power Potential: 200-600+ HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The K-series engines are highly tunable, reliable, and can rev high like the rotary while offering much more torque. They are also lighter than the rotary, improving handling in the RX-8. 4. SR20DET (Nissan) - Engine: 2.0L Turbo Inline-4 - Power Potential: 250-500+ HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The SR20DET is a popular turbocharged four-cylinder engine known for its reliability and tunability. It’s smaller and lighter than some other options, making it a good fit for an RX-8. 5. RB26DETT (Nissan Skyline GT-R Engine) - Engine: 2.6L Twin-Turbo Inline-6 - Power Potential: 300-600+ HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The RB26 is a legendary engine from the Nissan GT-R line, known for high-revving capability and strong performance potential. It’s a rarer swap but offers great power with potential for more. 6. 1UZ-FE / 3UZ-FE (Toyota V8) - Engine: 4.0L/4.3L DOHC V8 - Power Potential: 250-500 HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The 1UZ-FE is a strong and reliable V8 from Toyota’s luxury line (used in cars like the Lexus LS400). It provides smooth power delivery, good reliability, and plenty of aftermarket support for turbocharging or supercharging. 7. BMW S54 (BMW M3 Engine) - Engine: 3.2L Inline-6 (from E46 M3) - Power Potential: 330-600+ HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The S54 is known for its high-revving nature, making it a natural fit for drivers who love the rotary's high-RPM characteristics. It’s also a robust engine with lots of aftermarket potential. 8. EJ25 (Subaru WRX/STI Engine) - Engine: 2.5L Turbocharged Boxer-4 - Power Potential: 300-500+ HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The EJ25 engine, particularly from the WRX STI, offers a unique driving experience due to its turbocharged boxer configuration. It’s lighter than most other swaps and can be tuned for strong performance. 9. 1JZ-GTE (Toyota) - Engine: 2.5L Twin-Turbo Inline-6 - Power Potential: 280-600+ HP (with mods) - Why It's Popular: The 1JZ-GTE is a smaller and slightly more affordable cousin to the 2JZ, still offering plenty of tuning potential while being a bit more compact, making it easier to fit in the RX-8. 10. Ford Coyote V8 - Engine: 5.0L V8 (from Ford Mustang) - Power Potential: 400-800+ HP - Why It's Popular: The Ford Coyote is a modern V8 that produces excellent power right out of the box. It’s reliable, has a high rev range, and offers plenty of tuning potential for even more power. Considerations for an Engine Swap: - Mounting and Fabrication: Different engine mounts, transmission adapters, and custom driveshafts may be required for non-rotary engines. - Transmission Compatibility: You'll need to ensure the transmission fits the new engine or swap in a new transmission. - ECU and Wiring: A new engine control unit (ECU) or a custom wiring harness may be necessary. - Cooling and Fuel Systems: Higher horsepower engines may require upgraded cooling and fuel delivery systems. - Weight Distribution: Larger or heavier engines like V8s may affect the handling and balance of the RX-8. Swapping a different engine into the RX-8 can completely transform the car’s performance, but it often requires substantial work and expertise. Depending on the goals (track, street, or show), one of these engine swaps could make the RX-8 faster, more reliable, or unique.

I'm not doing this swap but I am doing a 5.3ls swap with a t56 transmission. Definitely not using a Ford diff or axles because I had snapped way to many already on other vehicles. I'm going to rebuild the ls, upgrade internals, injectors. I'm either going to supercharge the engine or I will turbo. I'm hoping once I'm done which will take a little but once I'm done to be making around 800-1000hp
Basically the E92 M3 complete rear axle was swapped in. The two front subframe to chassis mounts had to be changed to suit the RX-8 Chassis if I remember correctly.
How did you get the engine to fit over the standard steering rack? Looking at putting an mx5 engine in my rx8 and it seems the rack will cause some issues with the big electric motors in the way
Im really interested in hearing how this compares to the k swap one you are doing once the engine is finished in that car. I have a built turbo k24 in my rx8 but still wish i went 6.0L ls with single turbo.

This car as a total cost around £25,000 to build If I remember correctly. You can do it cheaper with a lesser LS though. Our first LS3 RX8 was more like £18k I think.

Interesting you don’t like aftermarket electric fans. My car has a stock viscous fan, what’s a good oem electric fan that’s available in the uk that I could use?
Almost anything that will fit. We use a huge diesel Jag fan on our S15 and we had massive issues with it overcooling the car initially. We now control it through the ECU and it's great, however it pulls ALOT of amps.
I don't understand why people would hate on this car. I love rx8 and almost no one builds them because of the rotary so doing a LS swap is rad for this car and the performance is able to back up the radical exterior of the car.
So are there any legal issues (emissions/inspections) with building a car like that in the UK? In the states, California is a nightmare, but here in Michigan we can do pretty much whatever we want...
I can't remember exactly, but the rear is a BMW M3 axle which is a different width, so it's not relevant to normal RX8's. We offer a load of wheels for standard RX8s that we can provide with this sort of fitment. Drop the guys in the office a message if you're interested 👍
Its funny how every country has their own slang. I had no idea if describing something as "Pants" meant if something was good or bad until I watched this clip.
Haha. Just to add some context: Pants over here are underwear. Or have been for ever. You do occasionally hear people in the UK calling trousers/jeans pants nowadays.
I thought it was a pz model for a sec, love Wankel engines but it’s so true what Craig says about them, my dads old rx8 was forever having issues starting
You could put a dodge neon engine in one and make it better over the wankle. A guy has a clean rx8 in my area for cheap but i cant get past it being an automatic
I've spent over $250K aud on my RX8 ..trying to turbo it:) Just an fyi.. I have successfully swapped the R3 diff internals from 4.777 to an auto RX7 (93-95) 3.909 ratio It's much better for big Renesis Turbo power/Torque.................
@@driftworks ...Yep.. It all adds up over 9 years. But mostly because three different shops kept taking my money and never got it to run right. I gave up on shops and redesigned everything myself. I had it running great until last week. I will rebuild it one more time:)
Is this an explosive, difficult swap? Don’t need anything extreme. 3-400 hp would be fine. Just looking at how cheap you can get rx8’s and I don’t want to deal with the stock motor.
people who complain about changing the rotary what's it matter how it sounds if it can't run? Rather a running car with power and a good chassis than a glorified paperweight with headache after headache.
Serious question, Does anyone actually have a problem with how that lsx sounds? Sounds bloody marvellous and satisfys this Aussie
Horsepower Mad love it, not obnoxiously loud or lumpy
Can't see why any petrol head would, it sounds fantastic, and is much better than the rotary engine too. 👌
The problem is it cost 12k to buy
No, LS engines are great. But they're not great in rx7s or rx8s IMO.
heck yea, many legs ago a family member owned one with the 5.7 and it sounded mean
I'd say on an RX-8, a piston engine is an improvement over stock.
In an RX-7 It's sacrilege.

Now his RX-8 has 3 times the power and it needs half the fuel and a fraction of the oil needed
yeah unlike a rotary

@Iron Scotsman Wankels use oil by design... They have to burn oil, otherwise they will seize... Like 2 strokes.
You get around 18mpg on a dorito, with a ls1 you can see 24st to 30highway mpg so yea you would when you think combined its about 27mpg
Bit late to comment, I would love an RS swapped RX8. The ride height, and wheel and tyre package of that one is perfect!

Love it iv got another rx8 coming I need engine ideas 1uz,1jz,2jz ect
All of the above!
really want to know more about the M3 rear end swap.....
Epic! Is the new daily the supercharged white one?
Yeah, Craigs current car is a supercharged E92M3. He's getting an itch to do 'stuff' to it now though.
if id buy a car from him and i live in dubai how can i contact the guy
Interesting you don’t like aftermarket electric fans. My car has a stock viscous fan, what’s a good oem electric fan that’s available in the uk that I could use?
Almost anything that will fit. We use a huge diesel Jag fan on our S15 and we had massive issues with it overcooling the car initially. We now control it through the ECU and it's great, however it pulls ALOT of amps.
I'm currently building my rxv8 with a 5.3 lm7. I was wondering what mount kit did you use, or did you do custom?
It was all custom.
Hi a current rx8 owner here, Interested in a ls swap, do you know how much costs would be included labour :)
You'd need to budget about £20k
I would love to see a little more video on the underside of the car and exhaust.
I don't understand why people would hate on this car. I love rx8 and almost no one builds them because of the rotary so doing a LS swap is rad for this car and the performance is able to back up the radical exterior of the car.
Can it turn?
So are there any legal issues (emissions/inspections) with building a car like that in the UK? In the states, California is a nightmare, but here in Michigan we can do pretty much whatever we want...
Not really an issue here, we're very lucky. It's extremely difficult in a lot of European countries.
Does anyone know what kind of cold air intake that is?
It's a Fast intake with a custom K&N filter.
May I ask what's the offset on those wheels? they fits absolutly perfect!!
I can't remember exactly, but the rear is a BMW M3 axle which is a different width, so it's not relevant to normal RX8's. We offer a load of wheels for standard RX8s that we can provide with this sort of fitment. Drop the guys in the office a message if you're interested 👍
Lol I don’t know why anyone would hate. Anything is an improvement over the Renesis.
🤘
Quick question. What makes rotary so special anyway?
The rpm and the sound
Where did he mount the coils?
On the lower part of the block by the engine mounts.
sometimes i cant use audio so i just want to see the car in action and see why it is hated
I want to see you guys swap in a Ford Ecoboost 3.5L V6 into something.
No chance. Hate V6's.
does driftworks convert these to order?
No, Dynotorque next door do these conversions a lot though.
Hate all you want, but what makes a car fast is LIGHT WEIGHT, I like this build.
so they replaced a 250lb engine tucked into the back, with a 400lb lump sitting at the front wheels. brilliant.
I don't understand why this is hated! You've turned a car that doesn't work into a car that does
I know right! Honestly we've had people practically threaten to kill us over putting an LS in place of a Rotary though. The mind boggles!
I will take "cheap as chips" and say it to my kids randomly for the rest of time. Thank you.
You're welcome! 😄
Mazda RX8 was on sale 2-3 years before the E90 plus it was first unveiled in 2000/01 so probably a coincidence.
You could put a dodge neon engine in one and make it better over the wankle. A guy has a clean rx8 in my area for cheap but i cant get past it being an automatic
Dang I want one.
I don't even need the 454, a normal 5.7 would suit me.
But if you insist I wouldn't refuse.
If I done a swap I'd want an LS7 for it
What paint is that
The standard Mazda paint.
Also is that beast road legal? what about emissions tax.
I don't think the e90 was out in 2003 when this car was released.
Another project car added to the list
how much did it cost to do that swap?
It's about £18,000 for the conversion as a start point with an LSX.
I've spent over $250K aud on my RX8 ..trying to turbo it:)
Just an fyi.. I have successfully swapped the R3 diff internals from 4.777 to an auto RX7 (93-95) 3.909 ratio
It's much better for big Renesis Turbo power/Torque.................
You've spent quarter of a million dollars on an RX8 trying to turbo it?
@@driftworks ...Yep.. It all adds up over 9 years.
But mostly because three different shops kept taking my money and never got it to run right.
I gave up on shops and redesigned everything myself. I had it running great until last week.
I will rebuild it one more time:)
I would love to see if up on the ramp
It's gone to it's new owner now I'm afraid, but I think it will be visiting Craigs workshop in the future, so we'll see what we can do.
Is this an explosive, difficult swap? Don’t need anything extreme. 3-400 hp would be fine. Just looking at how cheap you can get rx8’s and I don’t want to deal with the stock motor.
people who complain about changing the rotary what's it matter how it sounds if it can't run? Rather a running car with power and a good chassis than a glorified paperweight with headache after headache.
very nice car like the improvement.
Thanks
