  • Following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many nations are ramping up their defense spendings. But who is most equipped to handle the risk of war and foreign aggressions?
In 2021, the United States was followed by China, India, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Japan in defense spendings. But when calculating per capita nations like Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Norway, Singapore and Qatar stand out.

Another important metric I think you should've covered is spending compared to GDP, as nations with bigger economies can spend more on military.

I would very much like it, if you could do a ranking of the countries that export and import the most of weapons😊

I love your channel. Glad you have a new studio. However, if you can please set up an above-head camera, it would make seeing the small circles easier.

Thank you for watching! I am afraid that it would make it more difficult to see the hight of stacks.. But I agree that for some with just one single marker per nation it would make it easier.

The US defense budget is insane

As a citizen of a NATO country, I find it absolutely insane to commit to spending 2% of GDP on defense, when the current 1,3-1,5% on average is more than sufficient.
Example: Russia spends 65-70 billion USD. Even assuming 0% corruption and generously compensating for purchase power parity and labour costs, Russia is still outspent by NATO seven or eight times their defense budget.
That difference in GDP could be spent on other "national security" issues ie flood prevention, energy renovation and research and proofing against a new global pandemic.

America doesn't want to be the protector of Europe anymore. They are encouraging European countries to become militarily independent so that the USA can focus on other parts of the world (mainly china and the South china sea).
The nato budget would be much lower if you exclude america. This means that the nato dominance would be much lower in practice because america doesn't want to participate.
Furthermore most nato countries below the 2% are really small and not really that important. Montenegro increasing it's military budget would change basically nothing for example. And big countries like the UK and France are already around the 2% so they don't have to increase anything.

The only 2 powerful militaries in the european parts of NATO are Britain and France so I'd see why they can stay at their current levels but the rest of the NATO members are jokes compared to their wealth. If Russia were to launch an invasion into Europe there would be some resistance in eastern europe as they have a higher emphasis on their militaries but the moment Russia reaches Germany (NATOs second richest member) they would easily steamroll the token force they field. This would obviously not be possible in reality as the French and British militariies would reinforce but it's still worrying how weak Germany and other EU economic powers are.

Damn. I had no idea that the Dutch military was so big compared to most other countries in the world. (19th place) We often complain that our government is underfunding the military, but we are actually a really big spender. Especially compared to our size.
It is also interesting that a lot of really small armies can be a massive problem for their country. Many African countries like Guinea or Sudan have a neglectible budget for their military, but they cause a lot of problems for the country by organising coups and taking over the government and stuff like that.

The dutch militairy is not big. Its just expensive. We are a high income place. We have less soldiers than several places with more soldiers. Poland and Romania for example.we dont even have tanks.
1 area our goverment does not underfund in is our high quality airforce. And for the rest all branches are underfunded.
