Kroket is fried gravy? Nehhh 🙃 It is a ragout from flour, butter, bouillon, meat and vegetables, when cooled down rolled through flour, egg and breadcrumb. The Meat can be pork, beef or chicken, shrimps. The fillings can also differ from the standard potatokroket which is mostly eaten as a side, we know satekroket with chicken and satesauce filling, there is also a goulashkroket which tastes indeed like the goulash from Hungary. So no lol its not fried gravy 😘
I do think most Americans use the word 'gravy' when talking about a ragout. Denny didn't even know what ragout was, haha! Just a difference in language I guess! Thanks for your comment though! :)
Well, we all make mistakes. Americans call something gravy which actually isn't gravy and the Italians don't know what we call Bolognaise sauce, because they call it ragu. What's in a kroket is more like a bechamel with beef or veal, which the Dutch call ragout, from the French, allthough the French themselves call it a salpicon or a blanc de veau.
Tip: when you get snacks out of a wall, always take the one at the bottom, because that is the most fresh and hot. The snacks on eye-sight have been in the wall for a longer time…

Enjoyed this video SO much! You are such kind and fun people. Loved to see Dutch houses and streets. Glad your husband dared to eat the raw Herring and found it Sushi like. Guess it is. As a Dutch person living abroad, I'm longing to eat some real Dutch foods again! Miss the Kibbeling with the white sauce so much. Have a craving for it now :( A kroket is a ragout in a crispy coat. Not gravy! And now I also really long for that one. But... still have one in the freezer. So that craving can be helped ;) The Dutch pastries are unequaled on the planet.
I can relate so much. I usually miss friet met mayo the most! The simple Dutch foods are the best and all you need sometimes! Enjoy eating your kroket :)
I lived my early childhood in Apeldoorn! I make stamppot often, usually with a mix of veggies. It may include: spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts.... and always onions.
I only buy the sausage (rookworst) at the butcher, not at the supermarket or HEMA. And for the dish endive with mashed potatoes (andijviestamppot), I bake bacon strips (magere spekreepjes) cut the endive and bake it shortly in the bacon fat and add the bacon and endive to the mashed potatoes. Bake the endive very shortly because it must stay crunchy. Add some mustard, pepper and salt if necessary, like you did. Because of the bacon, adding salt is hardly necessary.
Nice video! I am from Scheveningen, we know our ‘haring’ here, but eating it in just one bite? Why? Nope. In Amsterdam you get the herring served, cut in pieces with onions and pickles. In the ‘randstad’ you eat it with onions, holding it by its tail, in bites.
Lol the fish snack that taste like “salted sushi” looks interesting. Wish I could try that here in Hawaii. If I ever visit Netherlands I’ll definitely search for it.
It's an interesting take on it as usually a herring will be quite "fishy" due to the special way they gut it before salting it. It's partially digested bu it's own digestive juices. But if you can handle the fishy taste it's not bad. It's softer than regular raw fish. My mom loved it but I'm not a fan but i also don't think it's horrible. You can also take more bites than just one big one, haha Maybe due to people loving sushi more people will come round to herring.
You won't have to search for it, it's everywhere. Just look for a fish vendor on the streets or an open-airmarket. Hope you find a way to come here one day. Good luck and greetings from Nijmegen, Netherlands.
if you can get fish and chips from an English style pub there, it's similar but cut into bite sized pieces and typically eaten with french fries or on bread rather than with baked potatoes.
As a Dutchman i can agree with the syrup with the “poffertjes”, it’s just better, if you ever have a visit again don’t forget the “oliebollen” and “stroopwafels”
Kroket should come fresh from the Febo and isn’t unhealthy @all, and we always have ‘jus’ (kind a butter/meat sauce) in a hole on top of the Stampot Andijvie..
I always use Unox rookworst and I think that tastes like they put bacon in it. Also if you use kale with your stampot, you have to boil it along with the potatoes as it needs a whole to soften and bring out the nice flavor. Though overcooking it is also not good,. I put fried lardons and it's fat in with the stampot. And poffertjes are traditionally made with some buckwheat flour, which you do not always find in modern ones, but that's what makes the flavor , buckwheat is a nutty sort of flour with lots of flavor. That's why it's good with just salted butter and sugar.
But put the potatoes underneath the kale after bringing it to boil or the kale will get chewy. Also, mix in something sour at the end for the same reason, like mustard, picalilly or just a little bit of vinegar.
@@grammatikaat4329 I often cook the kale separately too if I want to take the effort to get that exactly right as potatoes can cook at a different time depending on the type available. I never add anything sour but my mom would add a bit of vinigar at the table if she was in the mood. At least they change the oil (or frituur vet) in which they fry often. I've lived in the UK and they use the oil way too long so the food gets very greasy. But apparently the British like it like that.
This is funny dutch eat herring in one go😂😂😂 now i know , otherwise if i happened to see this in holland i would giggle really...danish, latvians, russians love such herring, but they cut it into pieces
@@DennyandNikki Actually that depends on the size of the fish. It's perfectly okay to bite off smaller chunks and in fact in Amsterdam they have a habit of cutting the fish in squares and sticking skewers in them. That kind of already tells that it is not the best herring around and adding onion will help mask the bitterness f this old or not properly handled herring. The good `maatjes-haring` should preferably be eaten without onions and I guess you were lucky to find a proper fishmonger that had the real deal.
Fituur is niet slecht hoor, Want je eet de snack en niet de fituurvet... Vis zit ook vol met vet, Maar is gewoon gezond. Denk dat een tompoes nog slechter is dan een frikandel en kroket.
