My current APRS setup is a Mobilinkd TNC hooked up to a Kenwood TM-281 and an old smartphone (no service) running APRSDroid. I'm waiting for a manufacturer to combine all of this into one package. This radio's form factor and touch screen had me hoping that someone had finally put the maps and visuals into the base unit.
all you'll need to do the above is to hook the FTM 350 or FTM400 to a Garmin NUVI GPS, using a special cable, and you'll be set: www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=158
I appreciate your demonstration. I think it's the best video on youtube for introducing APRS function on FTM-400 to my local club members (Although I need to translate your words). Hope your admission. 73!
Good video. Thanks. I am wondering. If this radio was set up permanently at home and sending out and receiving APRS, can you observe “Tropo” Dx conditions on 2 meters? For example, instead of packets of data from 50 miles out, to Tropo conditions 200 plus miles out? Thanks.
So sorry for the delay, that will be a function of the Digipeater system in place. If such a system exists, than it would be possible to do tropo conditions 200 miles & beyond.
This is a great help, I bought my FTM400, in part because of this. One problem, my setup buries the built-in GPS antenna well into my truck cab, resulting in poor reception. I can't find an external GPS antenna that plugs in...do you have any suggestion. I asked Yaesu, and they hadn't a clue. Thanks!
Hi there, that's unfortunate that you have poor reception, get the head unit as exposed as possible to the windows/windshield, that's gonna be your best bet without an external GPS! And I don't know of any external GPS that will connect to the head unit. Good luck, and thanks for the feedback.
Thinking about purchasing this radio. Sure hope it allows turning off the notification beeping. Annoying. Nice video. We'll minus the constant beeping. Thanks
I'm very much a novice with APRS. I like the idea of being able to check distances and direction with a radio and not need a computer or separate GPS unit in the car. Is there a way to receive only one station rather than get dinged every 2 seconds with every packet around? It'd be nice just to track one station. Thanks!
chadlpnemt Yes, you can filter what type of APRS packet you want to receive, for example; you can receive only weather stations, or mobile stations within a certain distance... so yep, it's really neat what you can do with APRS.
Great video. I'm currently trying to decide between this radio and the Kenwood tm-d710g for aprs. I really want the Yaesu, but I've heard there's no way to scan small banks of memories. For instance, on the Kenwood v-71a, you can scan sets of 100 memories which is great for travel. I group repeaters by location into their own group of 100 along my route and switch the scan from bank to bank as I move out of range. Is there any way you know of to do something similar with this radio? It looks like it can only scan all 500 channels.
Hi, I can see your point and I really don't have a lot of channels in mine. There might be a firmware upgrade that may address that issue, other than that, I really love the radio and Yaesu C4FM digital mode. I use aprs on occasions as N1CY-9 and N1CY-7 with the FT1DR handheld. Good luck and 73's
Hello - I'm contemplating either the FTM-400DR or the FTM-100DR. Of course, the 100 is not a dual-receive radio while the 400 is. But can the 400 operate via repeater on the primary band while simultaneously sending/receiving APRS on the sub-band? Or is the sub-band receive-only? Thanks!
+Captain Overpacker YES! You can be sending APRS on A/B Band, while at the same time transmit and receive on the other band. Actually, your Sub band can be the same as the APRS band (VHF), and you can still transmit. It will pause you when its ready to Beacon TX in APRS mode, or if you have a long key down time, it will Beacon TX after you unkey. You can also do cross band repeat and enjoy a live color band scope.... the 400 is so much more radio IMHO!
+N1CY - Thanks for the swift reply! Your report gives me more to consider. I like the smaller dash footprint of the FTM-100. But the 400 seems to offer far more. Thanks again.
Hi Hassan (Hope I spell your name right). When 400DR receives a beacon, the screen always shows the end of the popped-up massages at first. If I want to read from the top, I have to press the "TOP" button. Is there by any means to configure it so that it shows the top at first?
Hi, it doesn't. If you have a smart phone, you can access the web and go to aprs.fi then input the other station call to view on a map. If the other station is mobile; you should see a route trace. However, it is not quite a live route trace ...there is a bit of delay. My station call is N1CY-9 (when mobile) and (N1CY-7) when portable with FT1DR.
hmmm looks great. But i can't find anything in there website that say it has a built-in TNC but it is APRS ready, here .." 1200/9600bps APRS® (Automatic Packet Reporting System) Data communication capability included." I'm not fun of UI design of the Display but rather the functionality of the unit. Like it can do digipeating during emergencies, winlink for email, aprs and igate. Anyway, i will do research more on ftm400. Thanks
N1CY ok awesome I just got the radio two weeks ago and I absolutely love the rig I am using a comet CSB750A uhf mount antenna with trunklip mount and it works great. 73's.
It's an amateur (ham) radio, a rather capable unit at that, made by Yaesu that supports both FM analog and digital modes. APRS is an added data service that runs on amateur radio bands to transmit and share information such as text, images, GPS location info, etc.
Thanks this video helped me make up my mind to buy at FTM400DR. Excellent demonstration of the screens. TNX
Congrats on your decision, I love mine, great transmit audio with several level of mic gain/deviation adjustment. Thanks again for the feedback.

Thanks, it's my pleasure and thanks for the kind comments, 73's
starts nicely with displaying satelites in range, i thought you will demonstrate how to work satelites with that radio.
BTW, the APRS Channel is 144.390, so I was off by 5KHz. Not much of a big deal, but I did make the correction in the memory bank.

loup407 I understand that someone makes a GPS repeater- I saw it on one of these youtube videos.

Which button do u use to change compass secreen?

Thanks N1CY. I am considering this radio and you gave a very informative presentation. de W5XY.
+Arthur Condra Thank you for the kind comment... 73 DE N1CY
+Arthur Condra Don't consider it! Just get it! Mine came a couple of days ago: UNBELIEVABLE rig! I guarantee it's unlike anything else you've owned.

Very nice!
Thanks for the video is that a alinco microphone ?
Yes! Good observation, it's a 220Mhz Alinco.
Nice screen!!!!!!
Did you like the elevation screen in particular Dave?! .... LOL
You. Have to fix that. Not good.
You have not been on the air this week
***** yeah dude, been busy at work and stuff ... gonna be off tomorrow, I will call you on 449.700 & 224.620 ...
Ok
Okay, I'm sure I sound like an idiot, but what is the beeping at the very beginning of the video? Assuming it's some sort of digital transmission?
Sorry for the delay in responding, that was my callsign in Morse code, I have a key paddle and I did Morse code in audio only.
I want a radio to operate C4FM fusion am I in doubt between YAESU FTM 100D or FTM 400 DR? What is the best option ??
Without any hesitation the Yaesu FTM 400DR! It's a full duplex, dual color display with a touch screen. Plus many more advantages over the 100DR.
Thanks for the video! I think you just convinced me to order one! 73
+Pete Matejcik you're welcome, and enjoy the radio, full of features and quite a joy to learn.
+N1CY. LOL! JUST ORDERED IT!!! 73!
Would be nice if u could get a map. Similar to the APRS.fi or on a avmap display.
+jpintek great idea, I'm just running out of room to put stuff lol... thanks for the comment.
great vids thanks. Can you talk to those stations on your aprs?

Looks like Yaesu needs to have a plug in antenna so that mounting is easier.
Can FTM-400XDR communicate with specific power saving?
Hi Hassan (Hope I spell your name right). When 400DR receives a beacon, the screen always shows the end of the popped-up massages at first. If I want to read from the top, I have to press the "TOP" button. Is there by any means to configure it so that it shows the top at first?
Fu Zhixiang hello Fu, not that I'm aware of! I would closely look at the APRS menu.
N1CY thanks
Does this radio have a way to show you the APRS stations on a map?
Hi, it doesn't. If you have a smart phone, you can access the web and go to aprs.fi then input the other station call to view on a map. If the other station is mobile; you should see a route trace. You keep changing screens but don't tell us or show us how you are doing it.
If you press the D key on the Microphone, it will take you to a different screen every time you press it.
Does this unit have built in TNC?
Yes, it's APRS capable.
built -n TNC ax.25? or just APRS?
+revo adan both
hmmm looks great. Great video. What kind of antenna are you using for the radio?
73's.
Real sorry for the delay, the mobile antenna is a Comet SBB-94 triband with N type connector and low loss coax .
N1CY ok awesome I just got the radio two weeks ago and I absolutely love the rig I am using a comet CSB750A uhf mount antenna with trunklip mount and it works great. 73's.
Aprs 144.390 or 144.395
German Lopez 144,390 is the proper frequency
Ok 73 from TG5ALY
What is the actual POURPOSE of this gadget???
