I love Panaro's interpretation of Erik because he plays the character the same as the book.I wish people would see there was so much more wrong with Erik than his face.He was a psychopath not a helpless romantic.
Not sure whether to laugh or cower in fear. Hugh's interpretation of the Phantom is so unapologetically insane and his mannerisms and delivery so borderline funny that it's actually kind of scary. It's like he channeling the Joker or something!
A lot of people think that the phantom is more psychopathic then a hopeless romantic, but psychopaths are people who can't feel emotion and to me, the phantom just has so much of it bottled up, but I did enjoy how Hugh added more of a joker childish like tone to him.
Hugh is one of the only Phantoms who i feel really captures the “ Man-Child.” Aspect of the character. Sure, The Phantom is sophisticated and highly intelligent, but emotionally, probably never aged far beyond like 13, or even younger ( Thanks to the childhood he had). When he doesn’t get what he wants, he throws a toddler-like temper tantrum. “ You aren’t doing what I want! I’m mad! Now I’m going to yell!” The scary part of that mentality though, is that he’s _not_ a toddler, and _is_ capable of being a real threat. Young children are at their core selfish beings, they only can think of what _they_ want and need, and to them it doesn’t matter if getting what they want hurts anyone else, because they haven’t reached the level of maturity or empathy that requires. Erik never really grew up, and you could describe The Phantom of the Opera as *his* own coming of age just as much as Christine’s. “ The world showed no compassion to me!” Is a great example of this behaviour. ‘ I’m justified because this is what *I* want, and *I* need her more than you do anyway!’ Idk, I just love how Hugh plays up those elements, it makes him so unpredictable and really quite terrifying.
Lewis Russell Can people not like another Phantom without Ramin being brought into the equation? Just because you think he's the best doesn't mean he needs to be shoved into everyone else's faces.
^as much as I like Ramin, I have to agree with you. Some people only put Ramin or Gerard or sometimes Michael as their favorite and doing that just makes you a copout because they're the most famous. Here I am, though Ramin is my top favorite, Hugh's my second favorite, Gary Mauer my third, and I have a very very very long list of favorites (Gerard Butler is not on that list) that includes least favorites and foreign favorites. Then there's those people "oh Ramin's my favorite" "oh Gerry's my favorite".
I have found that each actor brings out a part of the Phantom In his own unique way. They are all fantastic. My overall favorite is John Owen Jones because of his perfectly beautiful voice.
I enjoyed Hugh's phantom, it's amazingly terrifying.. When Ramin plays phantom= Christine wtf u should marry Erik!! Hugh plays phantom= Christine ruuuuun!!!
"Hugh plays phantom= Christine ruuuuun!!!" Which is exactly how it should be. We shouldn't really be rooting for a 50 year old psychopath who kills people and wants to get with an 18 year old. XD Erik should be pitied and shown what love is, but only through years and years and years of intensive therapy. He's unstable, short tempered, and abusive. Not quite the guy any woman should wanna be with, unless they're 100% sure they'll put in the effort to change. Even then, it's like walking on eggshells. Been there, done that. It's one reason why I love High's Phantom. He's staying true to the book by making Erik unstable and crazy. :) With his Erik, I feel scared, uncertain, and pity all at the same time. I absolutely adore Crawford's Erik, as well, but for different reasons. Both men are amazing tenors, though.
This performance really surprised me. I am such a JOJ POTO fan that I compare everything with him but Hugh's performance showed a more sinister side to the Phantom in that it really brought out the Svengali in him. Truly a commanding performance.
I don’t care if these comments are two years old, I shall add to them with my hopeless fangirling. 1) the cute little dance at the very beginning like “I have the veil! It’s gonna happen!” 2) the lovely dynamic contrast between “Poisons/ our love...” 3) the playful tone at “wallow”, “pity comes too late”, “before your eyes”! 4) the little duck face as he’s arranging Christine’s veil 5) the “Wait, I’m going to get something” gesture with his fingers as he gets the bouquet 6) the airy, uncaring “we have a guest”, the laugh in “unPARalleled de-LIGHT!” and the sarcasm 7) Hugh’s feral, wild “come!” 8) of course the dummy flip! 9) “You have truly maade myyy Night!” I love his sarcasm! 10) the duck face again as though he’s considered freeing Christine but won’t bother 11) that Jack-Sparrow-worthy little shake of the shoulders at “passionate plea” 12) that damn little wave and the utterly childish reaction! So cute and devious! 13) that little wave at Raoul’s second plea like “Alright, I’ll let you in” 14)That “sssiirrrrrrr”, OMGOSH Hugh is so delightfully spooky! 15) that “I bid you Welcome” while gesturing to the audience as though saying “we all do!” 16) “YOURS” As in YOUR FAULT! 17) “Raise up your hand at the level of your eyes!” Such a childish, funny tone! 18) the way he forces Christine to slide down his body on “love”, cause emphasis on what he’s always wanted 19) that little finger pointing at Raoul like “No, no interaction, you’re supposed to be dying!” 20) that gradual plugging of the ears like “Agh! Lovers’ last goodbyes, so annoying.” 21) That “graaave”, like he’s experiencing perhaps a bit of empathy for Raoul, also it’s not overemphasized like other Phantoms 22) that full-arm Point like “I will not listen!” 23) that kiddish “prize!” 24) that nonchalant look as he sits back down, like “I SHALL ignore her!” 25) “You, try my patience”, the tilting of the head as though waiting for pleas or something, then “Make ....your....CHOICE!!” So creepy and great at the same time!! 26) the way he’s so unsure of what to do with his hands during the two kisses! 27) that confused look as he looks back at Christine like “what do I do now?” 28) the way he grabs the candle and brings it around, then stares at Christine as she’s frightened of what he might do to Raoul with it. Yes! 29) from “take her . . . GO NOW AND LEAVE ME!!!” Sounds like he’s trying to convince Christine and Raoul that he’s sane, so great! Lol! Also that bewildered look at “GO NOW” and the emphatic hand gestures! Points for ferocity at ME!!! 30) the whole Masquerade reprise, so adorable! 31) the “I love you” singing, as he sounds choked up on the last note 32) the whispered “I love you”s, which are SUCH a contrast from other Phantoms, it’s almost like that depth of feeling is deeper when Hugh’s whispering it 33) that gaze up and that smile when he heard Christine sing for the last time, so romantic! 34) that little reach out to the audience, full of longing and passion 35) that AWESOME vibrato and holding out between “the night”! Bravo! 36) Finally, before covering himself with the sheet, that face while it’s being pulled up like “I’m going to disappear now. Do not follow.” XD and that looking around at the audience like “Oh, they might actually like me” before disappearing. I have no words for how much I love this clip, and for how much I wish I could’ve been in the Theater that time and seen Hugh! Are there any other parts from this performance, OperaGhost, because I’d love to see them!! (Sorry for the longest comment ever, s’why they’re called comments, not rants.) No words for how much I love Hugh, though! He truly is a god amongst all other Phantoms, and among men!
Did anyone notice Christine, played by Sandra Joseph, kisses the ring before she gives it to the Phantom? I love this. She's the only actress I've seen to do this. If this was her own added touch, she's just brilliant. She's my favorite Christine by far!
Fantastic Hugh Panaro is most definitely my absolute all time favorite modern Phantom. Although I did see Norm Lewis on Broadway in mid September, 2014 and I though he did an amazing job as well. However for me personally Hugh embodies what I feel The Phantom the best in my humble opinion. Still having said that Micheal Crawford was, is, and forever be the true Angle of Music so to speak. I don't how anyone could not cry while watching him poor out his heart to his Christine, then be rejected and cry into here wedding vale, tears. I was born September, 5, 1986, a month and a three days before Phantom opened in London's West End, so I was too young to ever get to see MC work his magic. Still I'm hopeful that some day I'll see MC in a musical, and HP as The Phantom one day.
Where to begin, oh my godness. I've always loved The Phantom Of The Opera, it's been a part of my life since my early childhood. My first Phantom was Gerard Butler. Say what you'd like, I love his performance. Then, when I was older I saw the 25th anniversary with Sierra and Ramin. Since then, Ramin has been my favourite Phantom. But Oh. MY. GOD. Hugh Panaro. Holy shit. I mean, I've been at home for 3 weeks because of this fucking coronavirus, and TPOTO is my saviour. For days I've been listening to the soundtrack, and audios of different shows with different actors. And my God, I've never seen the Final Lair performed like this. Hugh is a genius. His Phantom is so different from the others I've already seen. Ramin will always have a special place in my heart as the Phantom, but Hugh is an other level.
@Cameron Ellis yes. This is so very emotional! Last year, I had the good fortune to see Hugh Panaro live! I cried like a baby! I was a total emotional train wreck. Christine was Samantha Hill, who was amazing, and Raoul was Kyle Barisch.
Well my favourite Phantom is Ramin THAT'S FOR SURE but I like Hugh he has his way of acting the Phantom very different from Ramin :) that's what I like about him he's creepy and interesting :D
I seen comments here on why was there crying. I believe this was Hugh’s last performance as the Phantom, before he did the Lestat musical. Eventually he had come back again to reprise the role.
Is it just me but did anyone notice as Christine was singing “this haunted face “ Hugh Panero he made a smooch face at Christine. What an amazing actor.
Wow I can almost believe that he is truly psychotic! This version seems so much darker and almost more evil than the 25th Anniversary. I love just about every Phantom but I have not seen him this dark! Wow
Hugh seems to be a favorite among phantoms but think he make it in a kind of silly way... I like Ramin's way much better... Even if it's interesting to play it in a different way then Crawford :/ Btw, wonderful hearing you cry behind the camera ^^
hunterdude113 Yes! Actually though, I far prefer Erik (the Phantom's name in the Leroux novel) to Raoul. I love Erik so much it hurts! Society warped and twisted this sensitive, passionate person into something he never wanted to be! He was never like that to start! Believe me, I want to be with Erik!
Christine Daaé then why Christine (I was phantom for my high school) why didn't you choose me? was it because of my horrid ugliness? my mask, when I wore my mask you sang for me, but when you saw my face, your song ended... why?
Of course not! How could I possibly do that to you? When I came back briefly that last time to give you your ring…..and you told me you loved me…..I have never, ever forgiven myself. I hope you can forgive me now, Erik. I am truly sorry. No person should ever have to go through what you did. I feel horrible, and I don't deserve you. All I am asking now is your forgiveness. (I certainly hope that my response is in character. I want to play Christine SOOOO bad but my high school's director refuses to do it! I can sing it well and everything….urgh! We should do one of the Phantom duets, I should love to hear you again, my Angel of Music)
Christine Daaé Christine, are you saying you will sing for me once more? please Christine, my heart burns until I hear your angelic voice grace my ears once more, sing for me, and our spirits shall soar as never before! (let's do that duet!, it'll be like song around the world or something :D )
Hugh's got the crazy part down but I like to think he may just be too good of a person to be violent, or maybe Susan Kay's phantom isn't violent since that's where Hugh's interpretation comes from. (I haven't read Susan Kay's phantom so I don't know)
The chair had a false back so Hugh hung the cloak or whatever that was and he fell through the back of the chair, leaving nothing except for the mask. simplytrueinandout
If, by "sucks", you mean "Oh, the poor Phantom, his heart is breaking and he's in so much pain", then yes, it does. Erik's life does really suck sometimes.
Christine Daaé ak12montvale I disagree and agree with both of you. I, personally, believe Ramin's Phantom is much better. I can get emotionally connected with him and feel with him. That is not to say that Hugh's Phantom is not good in its own way. For me Hugh's Phantom is to "crazy" to truly get emotionally connected with and therefore I feel nothing towards him. I think seeing either of these men perform live would be an incredible experience and you are lucky to have that!
I have to say that I saw this video before seeing him in New York, and I was not pleased. I thought his voice was too thin and his acting a little stilted. However, I then saw the performance with Samantha Hill as his Christine on Broadway and I was blown away. His voice is so rich and full and his emotions so real! Not to mention the chemistry between him and Christine was really strong. I fell even more in love with Erik (the Phantom) than I was before. That experience just confirmed and strengthened my belief that seeing things live changes everything.
I love Panaro's interpretation of Erik because he plays the character the same as the book.I wish people would see there was so much more wrong with Erik than his face.He was a psychopath not a helpless romantic.
This is the most psychotic distorted and disturbing version of this scene and it's amazing.
He really do act like the Phantom in the book. This childlike crazy personality is Really Good.
And this is why Hugh is the best.
I love Hugh❤️❤️
Haha, he looks exasperated at 7:51. "Didn't I just tell you to go? Why aren't you going?!"
Hugh is one of the only Phantoms who i feel really captures the “ Man-Child.” Aspect of the character. That dummy flip gets a 10.
An Di I'm fucking dying 😂😂
Hugh is gorgeous I love the little detail he puts to it like the little wave when he sits in his chair
THIS IS PROBABLY THE CREEPIEST AND FUNNIEST FINAL LAIR I'VE EVER SEEN!!!
I just now noticed a little dance that Hugh does at 0:03. It adds a lot to his interpretation I think
I saw it XD
Hugh takes such a creative spin on the phantom- he's my favorite phantom by far!
Watch Ramin as the phantom, your opinion will change. I guarantee it.
Lewis Russell I have watched him, actually, many times.
Lewis Russell

omg the end where he says "paper faces on parade" is so adorable lol like a little kid
Of all of Hugh's final lair clips that I've seen, this is by far my favorite
This performance really surprised me. I am such a JOJ POTO fan that I compare everything with him but Hugh's performance showed a more sinister side to the Phantom in that it really brought out the Svengali in him. Truly a commanding performance.

U have broken this down beautifully..... Bravo to you and your acute sense of details! U r almost as amazing as him
@@clickonmikey01 Thank you! I’m just a fan girl/writer, I notice fun things like that.
and when that choice echoed 5:36 chills.
Oh my gawd. How Joker-esque. VERY different from Ramin's interpretation. Like you can't even group them together.
That's the cool thing about this show! I love seeing all the different interpretations. It's pretty cool.
Hugh's Phantom is so delightfully creepy!
the little dance he does in the beginning really brightens my day cx

That was the best final line "you alone can...." Ever
I will say, although Ramin is my fave phantom, I love Hugh's take on him. Truly showed him as crazy.
I saw what seemed to be one of Hugh's first performance and he has really gotten better, and the audience clapped for him
That ending gave me chills. High Panaro is something else
Where to begin, oh my godness.

My most favourite phantom :)
I love that "Make. Your. CHOICE!" part. This guy's good :)
Thanks for this. Have seen Phantom 4 times. Twice with Hugh he is amazing and his voice is extraordinary.
@Cameron Ellis yes. This is so very emotional! Last year, I had the good fortune to see Hugh Panaro live! I cried like a baby! I was a total emotional train wreck. Christine was Samantha Hill, who was amazing, and Raoul was Kyle Barisch.
I've never cried more in my life. Thank you so much for this video.
9:23 he has so much sadness in his voice, makes me tear up every time.
aw the sniffs from the recording towards the end. me too people who took this vid me too
I love how insane his Phantom is
someone just let out a sob at 10:07 , god this final lair makes my heart break 😭.
Well my favourite Phantom is Ramin THAT'S FOR SURE but I like Hugh he has his way of acting the Phantom very different from Ramin :) that's what I like about him he's creepy and interesting :D

Gosh I love the way he says keep your hand at the level of you eyes,
1:19 Oh, sh*t! Phantom's gone nutzo!
No matter how many different versions I have heard of this song, the part at 9:24 always makes me cry!!!!
So emotional. Very very emotional
If I could make an animation on the book, I would most definitely cast him as the phantom
Is it just me but did anyone notice as Christine was singing “this haunted face “ Hugh Panero he made a smooch face at Christine. What an amazing actor.
2:19 how he just act like a Child😂
Omg! I'm so happy I found this!
The Phantom of the Opera Broadway October 1, 2005 Full Show
Wow I can almost believe that he is truly psychotic! This version seems so much darker and almost more evil than the 25th Anniversary. I love just about every Phantom but I have not seen him this dark! Wow
he really got down the creepy part of the phantom;)
Is it just me or do I hear people crying?
0:57 THAT FACE THO LOL
Phantom looks like the terminator with a Mohawk.
Hugh seems to be a favorite among phantoms but think he make it in a kind of silly way... I like Ramin's way much better... Even if it's interesting to play it in a different way then Crawford :/
Btw, wonderful hearing you cry behind the camera ^^
Yup. Never failed to cry for any final lair. I am such a softie. :)
is it because you know you're choosing prosperity over true love!?!?
hunterdude113 Yes! Actually though, I far prefer Erik (the Phantom's name in the Leroux novel) to Raoul. I love Erik so much it hurts! Society warped and twisted this sensitive, passionate person into something he never wanted to be! He was never like that to start! Believe me, I want to be with Erik!
Christine Daaé then why Christine (I was phantom for my high school) why didn't you choose me? was it because of my horrid ugliness? my mask, when I wore my mask you sang for me, but when you saw my face, your song ended... why?

Christine Daaé Christine, are you saying you will sing for me once more? please Christine, my heart burns until I hear your angelic voice grace my ears once more, sing for me, and our spirits shall soar as never before! (let's do that duet!, it'll be like song around the world or something :D )
9:25 you could literally hear people crying omg lol
Why dose he sound like the joker? That's awesome. He is awesome.
At least he is gentle with her some phantoms push them!
Hugh's got the crazy part down but I like to think he may just be too good of a person to be violent, or maybe Susan Kay's phantom isn't violent since that's where Hugh's interpretation comes from. (I haven't read Susan Kay's phantom so I don't know)
I see he is an amazing phantom
Hugh's the best❤️ he's my bae😅😍😍
are theses girls crying
Wow, I usually want Christine to Chios the phantom, but now, I don't want that at all. He is too much of a maniac...
oo yes now i found it
how did they do that chair trick?
The chair had a false back so Hugh hung the cloak or whatever that was and he fell through the back of the chair, leaving nothing except for the mask. simplytrueinandout
i cant find it
do u have his reprise?
Good as antony hopkins Tony time ?
whats vt?
Sandra stole the show.
Is it me or the make up has changed since 2005?
Ramin's 25th anniversary makeup was the "Mark 4". So yes it's changed at least 4 or 5 times over the past 28 years
This Christine is absolutely terrible.
this sucks
If, by "sucks", you mean "Oh, the poor Phantom, his heart is breaking and he's in so much pain", then yes, it does. Erik's life does really suck sometimes.
Christine Daaé I mean hugh panaro sucks. Ramin in 100 times better
I disagree. I saw Hugh Panaro live and I was in the front row, and it was the most incredible thing I have ever experienced.
