I've always liked the look of the massive positive camber on the rear of the 4wd kdfs. I guess it's so you could wedge two really fat German generals in back including their multitude of sausages. lol. (As a kid, my grandma's German sausage was always what I wanted most at dinner time).

surely the idea of 1940s VWs with 4WD is a fantasy? an RWD vehicle with high ground clearance, knobby tires, and 2/3rds rear weight balance could do darn well in traction, at a tiny fraction of the added cost. VW didn't actually do any rear-engined AWD vehicles until the Transporter Synchro 40 years later, that I can recall. Even the Porsche Carrera 4 (another rear engine vehicle with a driveshaft to the front) didn't come out until about then. And driven front wheels need expensive parts like CV joints.
VW made over 15,000 4 wheel drive, rear engine cars during the war. Most were Schwimmwagens where you need fwd to pull you out of the water while the rear tires are still floating. 4whl drive Beetles are an extreme rarity, only 4 wartime examples exist today, plus one post war car.

Those are the straight cut gears in the gearboxes.
