I just love growing potatoes in pots. It's so fun when you dump them out and see all those potatoes. I'm impatient this year, though. I've been digging my hands down into my pots of purple potatoes and have pulled up a few of them. They are so yummy and purple through and through!

Hello my friend, thankyou for sharing and it's great to start eating our new potatoes. I believe that you left me a comment on my potato reveal which must require authorisation which I can't do on my Tablet, thankyou for watching and commenting on my channel. Happy growing, Terry.
How do you get your ph low enough to avoid scab. From what I read you aren't supposed to use the same dirt every year and it takes at least two yrs to get the ph lowered and must lay fallow. I grow in containers also but the ph is still at 7. Supposedly potatoes are supposed to be at 5.5-6.
Hello Catherine. You are correct in that potatoes prefer a slightly acidic soil. My soil tends to be too acidic so I lime it at the back end most years to make it less acidic. There are products on the market that will make your soil more acidic but I have never used them so can't recommend any of them. With respect to growing potatoes in the same soil year on year, it's something I have done over the years and have so far not had any problems. It is fair to say though, I do add lots of organic matter and recycled compost at the back end to overwinter a sort of semi soil change. As far as I'm aware potatoes that are scabbed don't look that good but taste fine and are safe to eat. Good luck with your potatoes. HGV.
Hi there!! I'm growing potatoes in three pots about the same size as yours!! It seems to be taking a lot longer for the leaves to poke through than the bigger pots...is that cause the pots are smaller?? It's been three weeks now and no sign of leaves!!
Hello Adam If your potatoes were chitted before they went into the pots they shouldn't be far away now. When I use these small pots, 3 weeks of warm weather is usually enough for them to poke through so not long now. Typing this listening to your national anthem. Australia / England rugby league just about to kick off. Over and out. HGV
Hello Shahrukh. The pot I grow in are small no bigger than a domestic water bucket. Put 2" of compost in the pot, sit just 1 potato on the compost then fill the pot with compost. Start to water when the shoots appear and don't let the pot dry out. Hope this helps. HGV
Eyup Jim. New taters for tea again. I'm trying my best not to be jealous but honestly..... By the way I think you'll find that the bird on the chimbley pot was a blackbird-impersonating sooty fell-throstle. Very rare bird that so well done there.
Hello Maricela. The early varieties or determinate potatoes are quickest to harvest at about 14 weeks weather dependant ie too hot too cold could make it shorter or longer. The late varieties or indeterminate potatoes take a few week longer to be ready to harvest. If you have some on your veg rack that you like set a few aside to see if they produce chits. If they do, plant those and at least you will know that if you get a crop at the end you know you will like them. HGV.
Another great video,my brother grows potatoes in pots very similar,he swears by removing all but one cheet and to be fair gets some great results ,hope this little tip helps it may just be the way he does things who knows , worth a try?
Thanks for shared knowledge,I find your videos very helpful "I also like meg!"just starting out to grow my own veg unfortunately my two dogs "help" me by digging up everything I just planted, so now rather than spending time in the polytunnel I'm building a fence! They should take a leaf out of megs book
How long it would take time to grow and when it will mature to harvest. my potatoes plant are not flowering but now started to die now its 45days from seedlings
Hello Karthik. If your potatoes are dying at 45 days something has gone wrong as potatoes can take upwards of 80 days to maturity depending on what variety you are growing. I would lift your potatoes now and if there is at least 3 more warm months ahead of you, plant some more. Don't use the potatoes you lift to grow more potatoes as potatoes need a period of dormancy before they are 'good to go' again. Any one or more of the following could cause potatoes to die early. Too cold, too wet, too hot, too dry. Give it another go and good luck. HGV
Hello Paula. I can't recall, but my early potatoes in pots this year have been in about 90 days and they need a little longer. Pots stood in a Polytunnel would be ready on 90 days but outdoors it takes a little longer. HGV
LOL. 5Lbs Bag at the Store is = $5.00 (January 2018 Prices). So you got like $2.25 worth of Potatoes for 2.25Lbs. How much Time + Effort did you put in? LOL
+Home Grown Veg - Thank you!!! Although you did a nice Video and nice Job on the Potatoes. I was here to see if I can learn / grow my own Potatoes etc.... But when I calculate the Time + Effort. I have better luck working for the Money and then buy the Potatoes myself, LOL. I know you do it as a Hobby thing, and I understand that totally. But for me, I was trying to save my Money so I was here and there watching Videos on how to grow my own Food, etc... But to my surprised, I have better luck working for the Money and then Buy the Food. Please don't take anything as " Negative " .... I could learn a lot from you I am sure... @@HomeGrownVeg No its not an urban myth. At least not in Australia. I planted a whole garden of potatoes that were store bought. About 30 potatoes. None grew. They all rotted.

To do it again would not prove much. I have grown potatoes that have been store bought before with 100% germination. I have even had potatoes grown from potato peels. The time of planting was abolutely accurate. The temperature was cool. I kept the soil moist. Not wet. They were in a good sunny position. The soil had been recently dug so there were no weeds in the garden bed.
After waiting for a month l was puzzled that not one plant had sprouted. I decided to investigate and found that all the potatoes had simply rotted. All the potatoes had come from the one source ie supermarket bought. All looked healthy.
There was only one real clue. None of them had properly developed chits. In the normal course of events this should not matter. The potatoes should simply take more time to sprout. They should not just rot.
The only conclusion l can come to is that for all of the potatoes to fail in this manner is that the grower had treated them with sprout inhibitor. I grew a raspberry in their place after this and it has grown beautifully filling the entire space so there is nothing wrong with the soil. I even have a couple of volunteer potatoes growing there at the moment adjacent to the raspberry. They could not be from that failed crop because they were planted 3 years ago.
My current crop of Royal Blue potatoes in another spot are doing very well even though l planted them a month late. (I have pulled a couple of plants to check the yield.) Ideal temperature for potato growing is 16-21 degrees Celsius. Today it is forecast to be 39 degrees.

Hello uppandadam. Are you growing in the UK? HGV
I'm in Australia!! Different seasons!! LOL!!
HGV
Cheers!! and yes go us Aussies!! :-P!!
how much did u plant in a single pot
Hello Shahrukh. The pot I grow in are small no bigger than a domestic water bucket. Put 2" of compost in the pot, sit just 1 potato on the compost then fill the pot with compost. Start to water when the shoots appear and don't let the pot dry out. Hope this helps. HGV
Shahrukh Munawer soil for potatoes
Eyup Jim. New taters for tea again. I'm trying my best not to be jealous but honestly..... By the way I think you'll find that the bird on the chimbley pot was a blackbird-impersonating sooty fell-throstle. Very rare bird that so well done there.
What lovely background music. How long do potatoes usually take to mature? I'm trying to decide what types of potatoes to try out for the first time.
Hello Kevin. As a rule, the more chits that more potatoes but small. The fewer chits, fewer potatoes but bigger. HGV
Cheers mate once again thanks for sharing your knowledge
Molly not meg sorry my keyboard does a weird spell check thing sometimes
how do you know theyre charlotte when you get them from the store?
Hello Bowler. It said so on the packet. HGV
I thought you meant they were ones that you bought to eat, not seed potatoes
The potatoes were sold to be eaten. I eat some and some I 'set aside' to grow as plants. All my Charlotte potatoes were 'set aside'' potatoes. HGV
thank you for the entertainment i like watching your videos keep up the good work
How long it would take time to grow and when it will mature to harvest. my potatoes plant are not flowering but now started to die now its 45days from seedlings
HGV
How long were they in the pots?
Hello Paula. I can't recall, but my early potatoes in pots this year have been in about 90 days and they need a little longer. Pots stood in a Polytunnel would be ready on 90 days but outdoors it takes a little longer. HGV
LOL. 5Lbs Bag at the Store is = $5.00 (January 2018 Prices). So you got like $2.25 worth of Potatoes for 2.25Lbs. How much Time + Effort did you put in? LOL
Hello Jordan. Growing veg is a hobby and hobbies usually cost you money. What's your hobby? HGV
+Home Grown Veg - Well, I am trying to make a new Hobby... Making Money will be my new Hobby, LOL.
Hello Jordan. I have been over to have a look at your site. It looks like your on your way. Wishing you well. HGV.
But as far as I see, Potatoes will NOT be on the List of growing, LOL.
Nice reveal. Hope the rest go well.
how often are you Watering your potato plants
Hello David. Its weather dependant but these small pots dry out quickly so as a rule of thumb, every other day they get a drink. HGV
