Filosofem Tone (Remaking)

- The main part in "emulating" this sound is the Match EQ. I took a sample from the "Dunkelheit" track where there's only guitar. I recorded two guitar tracks playing the exact same, panned them and put the match eq on them.
The metal-zone's eq is boosting the low and the highs. The mid is turned completely down.
The match-eq almost acts like an impulse response, so I would like to redo this without it.

Update 2 (iguess lol): As stated, I'm not that into Black Metal anymore and will probably just focus on work, my own music and life lol. I will however make some different tone videos though, but most likely it'll be more in vain with 90's brutal death metal.
As for the HILARIOUS joke that really hasn't gotten stale, "haha black metal guitar sound shit", yeah it's raw lol. In my honest opinion; Filosofem's guitar tone is the only tone that would fit the atmosphere. It's like an ever rushing river in the mix, it really suits the album. To me, this tone sounds nothing like plugging a distortion pedal direct into your computer, I wanted the exact tone, not the thing that sorta maybe sounds like it. Please do continue with "insert practice amp and turn the bass all the way down and treble up", it's funny..
I think the Black Metal community is also just very stale, boring and literally all the same to me. It's been done (well you could say that about everything lol). I still enjoy the classics by Bathory, Burzum, Darkthrone or even Grausumkeit lol.
Anyways, have a great day!
Thanks man, it's the closest I got then@b.schmidt3701
While DM has gone back to the roots lately, just maybe better, which has been great. There are still some innovators in BM. Mgla, Batushka, Aara. Also some Black Gaze, like Der Weg einer Freiheit.
Don't get me wrong, there's a bunch of newer BM artists that are really pushing the genre to new strengths, but in my POV they are a dime a dozen. @@MMasterDE
I think the newer DM artists are really carving out something unique from the ashes of Old School Death and Brutal Death.@@MMasterDE
Подскажите, как вы добились такого звука???
For a second I thought it was the original track. It sounds exactly the same.
Me too hahaha
Burzum: Vampetas Song 💀
@@alexa.a6127 Engraçadão vc é um papagaio muito esperto
Ok, you are the only one that have been able to re create the same tone guitar from this album, for me it sounds perfectly the same, i`ll be waiting another video from this one a lot more deep. Great work. Please try Emperor: In The Nightside Eclipse or Darkthrone: A Blaze In The Northern Sky. Hails...!!!!
Baby, it’s cold outside
I think it's a massive coincidence that I have literally a quarter of this setup without even watching this video
Just letting people know: Varg isn't the most trustworthy person out there. I can absolutely be the case where he just plugged a distortion pedal into his brothers stereo. Plugging your distortion direct into a signal though makes a terrible sound, not like good terrible. He most likely used a tiny combo amp with distortion pedals like a RAT like how Darkthrone used on A Blaze In The Northern Sky. Part 2 will also have to be postponed due to me not owning Logic Pro or a Mac anymore, so the match eq plugin which did most of the work isn't available. I am trying to come up with a easier solution to get this tone though, so there is hope.
More recently though I've gotten more into Brutal Death Metal and I'll likely make a video some time showing some sick tones I've gotten, stay tuned!
Merry Xmas!
Nope, had the same technics stereo amp back in the day and i could get exactly the same sound as he did.
I haven't found any sources that say he used a Technics set, I've only heard he used his brother's Tandberg (most likely) Sølvsuper set.@@Davidbrompton58
@@Davidbrompton58 what amp/stereo did you use?
@@AgemIronncan’t remember the model number but it was a technics pre/power combo from early 90s. You just plugged straight into the headphone jack and used the three tone controls, the sound was identical.
@@Davidbrompton58 I can attest to this somewhat, I grew up without enough money for an amp and had to try methods like old computer speakers with a guitar cable converter. These things were damaged pretty severely, and the sound that came through them almost sounded like the classic distortion you'd hear in old amps. A distortion pedal on top of that would have been overkill, but I can imagine it sounding a lot like this.
Dude you totally nailed it!
Hehe thanks, but it was mostly the Match EQ who did the heavy lifting. Though I'd like to try to chase the tone, but fully analogue.
Great job mate! Hard to tell it apart from the original.
I did a full cover of Jesu Død a couple of years ago on my channel and I used my Metal Zone pedal as well to get the Filosofem sound, it's a great pedal for extreme metal. I didn't come as close as you did though, I didn't have a matching EQ so I had to work my way around it.
No that's the thing. I've of course tried to just plug my MT-2 in a stereo or straight into a direct input, but it didn't give me the texture like on Filosofem. The tone was comparably brittle and lack that thick low end and that fizzing atmospheric high treble end.
I used to have my mum and dad’s old Sony stereo system from the 70’s….maybe 80’s (I’ll have to ask him) when they upgraded and gave it to me around 2000. Can’t remember model name, but it had the 6mm jack into the aux, I could plug straight into it, no pedals, and had THE Filosefem guitar tone. Unfortunately the stereo died one day, and me being young and dumb, put it on the rubbish heap, without seeing if it could be saved 😵
I want to try this with a Tandberg reciever, due to that's the brand of stereo Varg claimed to use.
damn that sounds so good, i also just ordered myself a boss metal zone pedal and i will try this out, cool tone!!
Best attempt I've heard from anyone including me with my lil uber metal pedal
beautiful
That literally gave me goosebumps
This is absurdly close to the original.
Great work dude🤘🏻
Thanks man!
You fucking killed it! Great tone!
Holy that’s perfect
THIS WOULD BE KILLERPLAYED LIVE !!!!
oh its you playing.... had me fooled :) awesome
Pretty accurate good job
Varg used a Danelectro Fab Tone. Any setting instantly gives this ear piercing highs. Nice secret weapon pedal
That could be, but the Fab Tone seems to have been released around 95 (or mid 90's) and Filosofem was recorded around March of 1993.
Good work
Nailed it!
Congratulations, you did it! Now play the first four songs and upload the video. 🔥✌🏻
Very good🤘🔥
Nice, big ups
Yes. This is it.
perfect
using an ibanez gio, thats crazyyyyy
The GIO line is very good. I've had it serviced once and it still shreds, it's a great guitar.
Very interesting!
i feel like varg used metal zone straight to the head amp -> pc in the studio . no micing , no amps. just try plug in the metal zone straight to the interface or something that can handle guitars and distortion and see for yourrself.
He most likely used a RAT or HM-2 into a home stereo set. It was most definitely miced up though. Just plugging the metal zone into an interface will get you a raw buzzy tone, but not a good one as on Filosofem.
He used what can be assumed to be a Boss HM-2 into a stereo and double tracked the guitars. We just know he used an old distortion pedal and since he was friends with Euronymous at the time and that was the pedal Euronymous was using, it's fairly safe to assume he borrowed it. Especially when hearing others use that pedal in covers of Burzum songs.
That said, the Metal Zone sounds fantastic here too.
@@winterhisagi2921 Yes I would assume he used a HM-2. Euronymous famously used one with a Boss OD on Deathcrush.
@@rdmoonie I definitely agree. Given how close they were (at the time) and that they were working with each other, I'd say it's safe to assume he borrowed from Euronymous.
@@winterhisagi2921 Filosofem was also recorded awhile before Varg’s imprisonment so it would make perfect sense.
yeah, metal zone sounds like burzum
That's really, really close. I think the final step would be the final mix. Also Dunkelheit heavily relies on stereo, which might be all you need to make it perfect.
Thanks man, a full mix would be really cool to do.
I saw where Cary said he used a micro Marshall, like one of those little travel Marshall’s on one of his albums
Equipment used: Crate practice amp
Can you believe that the cheapest of equipment contributed to the birth of genres? 90's death metal had the budget Crates, Ampeg, Marshall Valvestate amps for example. Black Metal has the Peavey Bandit and other combo offerings.
Hell yeah
Caveman discovers recording for first time. Plug guitar into amp, record with the first mic you see. Done. No mixing, no mastering, no eqs. Just raw crappy audio.
That's probably what they did, but that makes the tone even more special.
Total cost: $207.36
It sounds like shit I love it
Just took the words right out of my mouth
welcome to black metal
Fucking great job !
🔥🔥🔥
WHERE IS PART 2 ?!
Good job man. Its the same
Part 2 with aske?
The Marshall MS-2 would definitely get you there, but this is much better
The thing is, I dont want to just get there, the tone needs to be IT.
What settings on the pedal?
Can get it with zoom 606 and line6 15w
Can you recreate Satyricon tone? :*
❤
MT-2 settings? (although mostly its done by the eq software)
It's been a while now, but I would assume that I scooped abit of mids and bass out, and adjusted treble and mid frequency to taste so it didn't sound like cliche MT-2 garbage
the mid settings play a big role even the slightest change differs it entirely@@rdmoonie
I would imagine the sound to have abit more high mids than my demo though.@@nightmare5163
All writes reserved to Kristian Vikernes would have been funny
He'd be fuming, I should've done that lowkey
do you know how he made the bell sound??
I've made the bell noise with Xfer Serum, but he used a Casio CZ-101
I just have a regular cheap Ibanez amp and turn my bass all the way down and treble all the way up and put max distortion and it sounds just as awful
EU gostei, mas originalmente o efeito utilizado neste álbum foi um Fuzz, e não Distortion.
do you know how he made the bell sound???
synthesizer
Casio CZ-101, preset Fairy Tale. You could also reproduce that sound with Xfer Serum for example!@@noisematt
And the presets and modulation of pedal knobs?
Ahh yes, I will come out with another video explaining that, but my mac is under repair at the moment. As I said though, the "match eq" is doing much of the heavy-lifting. "Match EQ" is where you "teach" your eq to match a reference audio-clip's tone or eq. I used a second of a sample of only the guitars from Dunkelheit. I also tried to match the tone as good as I could without the Match-EQ. I had my Metal Zone knobs set to full gain, low at almost half way, mid to null, mid-freq to a bit over half way and the treble at almost full. As I said, I'll do a more in-depth video later.
@@rdmoonie Oh yes man, can you reproduce the Det Som Engang Vår Album too??
@@gabrielvillanova5408 Yeah sure, I'll make an attempt.
@@rdmoonie- Aight mate, it's been a year or so, let's hear those settings!
Sorry my bad, so I originally made the demo on my school macbook (which I do not longer own). Having a job and a newfound interest in brutal death metal has taken my time away. I'll try to replicate the tone as good as I can with more avaliable components.@@sercastamere9853
Didn’t varg have a video explaining how he recorded it? That may have been for the prison albums though
Not very in depth with the guitar work though and Varg is a FREQUENT liar, but yeah I didn't record FIlosofem, he did. As I've said, I tried to contact Pytten (the producer of FIlosofem), but it seems like he's a private person just trying to live his life, so that has to be respected.
you can basically obtain a very similar sound using only the amp and no cab. raw, disgusting tone
Burzum: Vampetas Song 💀
I can do this in FLStudio?
yes, on amplitube or another simulator
I will actually try to make a video with VSTs
Vikernes said in an interview that he used his brother's hifi as an amp for this album. could be true. he's a great artist, but he talks a lotta shite though.
That's the thing, it could very well be that, but it's Varg.
finally: non racist burzum
Good job. He just plugged his guitar through his brothers cheap computer speakers to achieve this, though.
I really wish that's the exact thing Varg did, but he's not the MOST trustworthy man on the planet. The story is his brothers old home stereo set for his guitars and a helicopter headset microphone for his vocals. I've tried to come in touch with Pytten (Filosofem's producer), but he seems to be a private person.
If you just were to plug your guitar into cheap computer speakers, you'd hear pretty much nothing since speakers are not amplifiers. It is speculated that he used a old Tandberg stereo set.
such an awful tone, which makes it absolutely amazing
Øбрубки
Ah yes, but when do we get Filosomasc? I'll see myself out...
хы, ну и шляпа от мастодонтов... хотите хардкор и нойз? послушайте 93 от химеры
Basically, is this even a genre? Sounds like the cheapest distortion pedal from Wish combined with TV-static.
ARGH! I hate it whenever my music isn't plastic overly produced toilet whining.
Ibanez Gio is a piece of 💩. I should know, I owned one.
I should know aswell, I still own one, after countless guitars. I love it, it's my goto shredder and it never goes out of tune. Sounds great aswell
metal zone is the worst distortion pedal ever produced
It is very much not. It's a incredibly versatile pedal and that's the double-edged sword with it. Some people know how to balance it, some people do not.
Dont use it in front of the amp. Just plug it into the fx return, guitar straight into the pedal (so you just use the powerstage of the amp). The MT-1 is an awesome pedal when used right (but dont try this with a HM-2, that thing must go in front of the amp)
You can definitely get a kickass tone in front of the amp aswell. I'm currently using the MT-2 as a boost for the MXR Fullbore Metal all going in front. I've used this aswell going directly into the effect loop aswell.@@Lesca6
one of the worst tones ever

Far far away.
