blog.e3diagnostics.com/loudest-live-events-ever-recorded Thanks Bart.. 210!?!? Way off but here’s a list of the loudest live events ever recorded. Turns out NFL fans are the loudest thing around! Ted Nugent, Kiss, and AC/DC come close though.
I saw Van Halen at the United Center in 2007? And the day after I remember thinking to myself how bad my ears were still ringing! The cumulative damage from years spent playing next to the drummer and across from a Super Reverb in a tiny rented practice space paled in comparison. Keep on rockin' Brother!
This is a helpful demo. Just read that the SPL (sound pressure level in dB) increases by +3db for each doubling of power. Likewise, reduces by -3db for each halving. Your results support that: 20w/5w = 4 = doubles twice = +6db difference between the 20w and 5w amp. We can probably estimate the 0.5w sound levels from the 5w amp, 0.5w/5w = 0.1 = halves about 3.5 times, maybe 10db lower, so around 95db. That is more than loud enough for home use, and will be less with the volume not cranked.
Dude, nice extrapolation!! I’d say your spot on as I was just reading the other day that a 1W amp will produce 94-100 dB “cranked” which correlates to what my Randall RD1 produces... I kept wondering if the little demon shouldn’t be just a tad bit louder but it’s right in there. Thanks for watching.
Great video - I frequently use a dB meter to check my "bedroom playing" levels. Healthy habit! The DSL20 at low power cranked in a medium-sized room is plenty for my middle-aged ears. I think The Who's record was in the range of 120-130dB, over 200 dB would open up the earth, that's close to atomic bomb levels of sound pressure.
Thanks for the correction... would’ve been smart to check before spouting off :) blog.e3diagnostics.com/loudest-live-events-ever-recorded Loud concerts hover around 130 but turns out NFL fans get even louder :)
I think what might be happening with the 2x12 is that with two speaker cones, you have a greater surface area moving the air in front of the amp. Generally, if you increase the volume of the air being moved, the lows and mids tend to become more prominent relative to the top end. Because our ears are more sensitive to the middle of the frequency range, we perceive those sounds as being "louder" (hence a mid boost from a tube screamer can make your signal "pop out" from a mix). However, the speakers themselves are only operating at 2.5W each, rather than one speaker at 5 W. As a result, the actual *pressure* of the air being moved is not really all that different from the 1x12 and thus the decibel reading is basically the same. In essence, although you've increased the volume of the air being moved, you're not hitting it as hard as you would with the 20 W 1x12.
Hello, how are you? First, your videos are amazing. Can you ask me a question? I have a doubt about the DSL5CR and DSL20CR. I play in my home studio 85% of time (more or less) and a little with my friends on a gig. My questions are; 1. Is the DSL20CR to much for a home studio, or its possible to play with low volume and good quality? 2. Is the DSL5CR is enough to play with a band on a GIG? Thank you so much.
Really great videos! Thanks for making them. I am considering the Engl Ironball E600 Combo. Or a Dsl20. Is the attenuation the same on both amps in terms of quality?
that’s cool, the Ironball is the better amp but is also tighter and more brittle sounding than the Marshall, not in a bad way though, just different. What style of music do you play 80% of the time? Chunky, tight metal (Engl) or hard rock, classic and blues (Marshall).
Does the marshall dsl have a real attenuator built in? I want a combo. I like a organic tone and play mostly rock, heavy rock and some metal. A british sound open and organic. My bridge pickup is a very strong Gibson ceramic 500T. I am thinking Laney Irt30, dsl20 or engle e600 or even the dsl5 but I want the presence and fancy a V30 speaker. I really need to find a store that has all 4 amps and try all. Love the content you do, its helping alot to get my first valve combo!!
@@RA-ot6yr - no, the DSL only has High/Low power and there is little difference, some but not much. I haven’t looked at the back panel of the Engl Combo but the Fireball / Ironball heads both of a real attenuator built in that works very well. For around home use, I don’t think you can beat the DSL5 combo. I easily modded mine to take a 12” Greenback and love it. Of course it won’t compete with a drummer but it gets plenty loud for around home.
Thank you very much~!! Awesome video. 5db is not only... this is A LOT. But I know what you had in mind 5W vs 20W. + the amp is only a part of the whole equation. If you use 1x12 you can get -6db which is A LOT with just a speaker change. I am waiting for my custom made cab with jensen mod/chicago 12-15 16ohm which is 93.5db @1w. Btw, ohms also reduce loudness. But I don't have much knowledge in that department. But 4ohm is much louder than 16ohm/ Oh and 2x12 is louder than 1x12. Approximately ~3db if you are using 2x same speakers. But again... power delivered to each is halved so... yea/// If someone wants pure valve amp goodness and play relatively quiet without any tone damaging degrading attenuators . 1x12 jensens speaker ad 1W amp/ I don't think you can do any better than this/ It's gonna be still loud but @1W it should be ~93.5db with jensen 12-50 at max. I haven't found any less efficient/sensitive/quiter speakers (12").
Sounds like you know your stuff! I have noticed an appreciable difference in 8 ohm vs 16 ohm speakers, not only in volume but tone. I used to really be partial to 16s but anymore (for whatever reason) I’m liking 8s. Thanks for watching - I wished more people used sound level meters in their videos.
For me personnaly...playing at 105 db with the DSL5 with my wife in the house....let just say the DB meter won't have time To measure the sound pressure...uhhggg😖😖
Good question, I would say if you tend towards hard rock and metal, go with the DSL. If you play mostly clean, blues and ‘some’ rock go with the Monoprice. Reverb is lacking with the dsl5 but you can always add a pedal. Conversely, they both take pedals well so if you just ‘occasionally’ play metal... like with a pedal... you could always pull that off with the Monoprice as well.
Thanks, another viewer wondered ‘how loud these would be attenuated’ so I did that as well. The Dsl20 is a pretty remarkable amp and covers a lot of territory; takes pedals like a champ.
This was great. We have bothered the neighbors once and couldn't figure it out because the decibels were at only 83 (we live on a 1/2 acre but only 100 feet between houses. But it was the frequencies of the bass that was doing it. Doesn't have to be loud for bass as those sub frequencies travel in a different way.
We have a pretty chill neighborhood, only 7 people on our lane. Everyone makes some noise from time to time but everyone’s respectful of the common quiet hours, lol. It’s a nice mix, the buff dude’s house jams across the street, my hard rock riffin’ or the German couple above us yelling! Last year the wife was outside yelling “I’ll never give you a divorce, I’m going to stay married to you and make you’re life a living hell!” She brings little German cookies over at Christmas, lol. And then there’s Dennis the biker down at the end of the road... take care dude!

I know that more speakers always ‘sound’ louder :-) but you’re right.
love the intro😂

Great video wish you had of done the 40w also
haha, well... the 40, while not twice as loud as the 20 was way frickin' louder. It's really a "play out" amp meant for the stage, not home use.
Do you know much about the volume comparison from the 20 to the 40

Which one is a better amp, old DSL5c or Monoprice 15 ?

Clean Headroom?....Isn't metal like Rap? lol
I thought the 20 sound better
Ya me too, that little BH7 tube in the DSL5 doesn’t like going All Out.
Yea, the 20 surprised me, nice full tone
