Sometimes people focus so much on the technical details that they forget to make music that express what they feel.
Just remember JDilla, he turn off the quantize and made what he felt was good.

Digging The Greats released a video about how Dilla not using TC was largely a myth. He did turn off TC for a handful of songs but his approach to timefeel was a lot more calculated and nuanced than just playing in by hand. When you use an MPC you have control over every single variable for time correction and that's exactly what Dilla did
Well… kind of. Dilla would use different time feels. Sometimes that means unquantizing things. Other times it means quantizing to different places

One of the best takes I got from you was: Don't complicate. Do your thing, put the music out. Once I started doing that, I threw most preconceptions I had through the window. It's very easy to fall into the X does it this way, Y dois it that way SO THOSE MUST BE the right ways. Chop some shit over some drums and that's it. Keep doing it, don't spend much time in the same beat. Feed the brain and the ears. It will add up. Grande abraço Marco!

That’s the best way. Numbers and keys can be useful if you’re lost, but always trust your ears in the end.

@@captainmordrum I'd say it is ones musical and rhythmical awareness in the mind, which obviously involves the ears as the interface! AKA having "good ears", and involves more than the term may imply.
‘Small chops’ is the way I used to approach sampling when I first started sampling because I owned an S950. The sample time was hella short. I also had no idea what I was really doing yet. Experimenting was EVERYTHING. As time progressed, I got into loops and chopping larger sections. I miss those days of minimalism and not having so much info under my belt. I enjoyed knowing LESS!!! 😂💯‼️🔥
I have the same issue but vice versa. I started out taking large loops and just chopping bars of samples. Now I can’t just loop stuff, I have to chop stuff up like a puzzle for no damn reason. 🤦🏾♂️. Life was so much simpler when I didn’t have all these complicated self inflicted rules.

Best MPC channel and I’ve viewed and I seen a lot of them. I hope Akai supports this channel in some way because Marlo’s help keeps people from selling or returning their MPC out of frustration. The manual can be confusing for some people and also some people learn better visually. Marlo is definitely helping us getting the most out of our MPC to do new things creatively and making it more enjoyable.

Infinite ways to create. I just let things flow and rarely consider bpm bc it depends on how you chop and flip the sample at the end of the day. Every video you do Marlo is insightful. Thx and keep it up!!

This is really helpful. I desire to make jazzy deep house music with hip hop style samples. I love how Moodyman builds collages of different textures. An issue ive had is expecting to be able to rip straight loops that work with a beat. Im using Ableton so just need to work out how to apply the tail technique now. Thanks dude.

If it sounds good it is good. Trust your ears. The other stuff are just tools, of various worth subjective by user needs. Nice video. Good on the eyes and sounding nice. I like the way you keep it simple to get great results.
Thank you for this video. If you notice, the MPC is in controller mode in this video and this really helps when you warping samples, because it defaults to the Elastic Pro Engine which is far better than the Pro Ten algorithm, which is found in stand alone mode. If you doing long samples you might wants to be connected to the computer.

thank you this was dope. ive come to the point where i am breaking out of the "rules" bpm etc. i play bass so i know music theory but trying to translate to the MPC sometime dont work out. being a huge dilla fan it makes total sense. if it sounds good it belongs. your tips are def useful in actaually creating music that sounds like.....music . thanks sir
I think what people are asking for is what you have mentioned at the beginning : longer loops to match with drumbreak not a tiny drum or sample chops but how to manipulate time strech so both fit in together....There is many great loops like 5-10sec long and finding good drum break without chopping it to adjust tempo correct f.e drum break is 100bpm and loop is 75bpm and the beat new tempo is 90bpm - how to blend it all without having artifacts :) ....Great video Bro as usual you explained everything clear!

or just stretch it in ableton. this is just basics man. one of the first things i did making beats as a little teenager. eventually gotta advance from using a full 15 seconds from someone elses song without chopping. thats straight up stealing haha oh wait but its okay because you put another 15 sec sample of james brown drums on top. boom new song!

Great upload Marlow...sometimes i use timestretch in real-time warp to align small cuts to the rhythm .rarely look at the bpm unless it's off by miles . Just like you did ..I wonder how many uses of warp will crash the system?

Marlow! Your approach in how BPMs and rhythm all eventually end up in phase is a central theme in a lot of Steve Reich's work. Love it - I can see it breaking me out of the habit of trying to control too much of the creative process. Have you messed around with the Subharmonicon much lately? Maybe having all of that clock control would be fun with the MPC CV control.
stop "trying to control too much of the creative process" - that's it, hear what the sample is saying instead of you speaking over it with effects and tricks.

Ive never really cared a bout BPM or the key, I've always used my ears, even though I no longer sample, but I get you what you mean %100
A lot of people ask how people came up with those off-kilter chops in the 90s are because of this. I've heard samples that sound completely different than the beat that samples it because as long as notes hit and it feels good. All that matching BPM's, chopping on the "ones," goes out the window when creating.

I agree that caring about match bpm’s is often overrated. I am much more interested in making sure the same is stretched to the closest “useful place” such as a bar or a beat. That is much more useful for my workflow.
Although I guess that can be considered caring about bpm but only in the most… incidental of ways
If I can get the key, I consider that as a bonus

If The Chopped Vocal Cuts For Example Has A Low End Like A Kick Within Its Own Segment, Then It Is Best To Add A Low Pass Filter to Basically Mix The Merge To One Range Of Frequencies In Most Cases Or Vice Versa With A High Pass Filter and Tone Out Which Ever You Want Less Of, And Let The Sample Chop Be The Sample Chop... Its Supposed The Be Rugged In A Sense Just Like Scratching... Just Do it with Some Style either within The Measures of A Bar Or Two, Or Use It To Communicate Back To The Characters of Other Notes, Vocals, Or Effects , I.E. Rhythm. 😁
Great breakdown and points… it’s interesting what’s easier for sample timing and song structure for sure, I like slicing, chopping and placing in grid edit… I keep getting a bug where my sample chops want to start on pad 2 not 1 also? Anyone else had this?
Weird, never had that
This is for anybody who uses MPC or any type of hardware to make beats. For about the past 3 months or so I’ve been getting these popping noises at the beginning and end of my chops. Whether it’s my drums or the sample itself. I know about making it mono and I make sure all the chops are properly cut so nothing is interfering with the other. The pops are never consistent either. It’ll pop on bar 1 and 3 and then turn around and pop on 2 and 3. It's been pretty frustrating so if anybody has had that problem and can help, let me know.
Johnny hey-fello MPC user:
Try using envelopes: if those pops are on the beginning of a sample, use the attack envelope. If it’s on the back, use the decay envelope. The envelope will automate those pops away without comprising the position of your chop. If the pops are in the middle of your sample, try lowering its volume, filters, or sampling it in again. I hope this helps!
I have the same philosophy, on the bpm sample,, head And tap tempo
I got a question fam, you know when creating a new drum program on the legacy MPC (5000) there's a screen where you can layer up to 4 sample / level, tune, range. My question is what is range, and can you explain it to me. Searched the manual and it only explain level and tune.

BPM is to be considered into bar / measure ; if what you sample is shorter than a bar, you don't have to care about it . BPM occurs while you have a sequence playing repeatedly ; single or isolated shots are not about BPM
1/8th quantizing and swing at 120 bpms is exactly the same as 1/16th with swing at 60bpms. 1/8th at 240 bpm is same as 1/16th at 120bpms.
Never care about the bpm of the samples
Even sometimes when I mike my drumloops at 90bpm
Then I slowed them down at the 80s
Because I like how sounds after that

I think it's kinda ridiculous when I see people clamoring for "key detection" in various products like the MPC. There's so many cases where you're guaranteed to get the key "wrong" in a random sample, so it seems pointless.
How do you get your samples cleared to release your music?
Its funny, i always matched bpm with Ableton and the Mpc in the past, even when using chops, but since i got the SP 404 i just dont care and use the awesome Vinyl Pitch..

Yo, see, I also generally don’t care about key either. More often than not I usually just care whether it’s major or minor, up tempo or down tempo. That’s it. My loops are also just so small that bpm doesn’t matter either - also because I generally look for clean cuts without much if any percussion in them

Yes the sequencer always has a bpm. You can work with tc or without. I do give online lessons, email is in the description.

Locks the warp to the sequence bpm.
Some samples don't even go together even if the BPM matches I don't know what's the big deal if it's not drums

Do you care about BPM?
You should alway know the bpm of your sample, no exception, especially if you're sampling a full song instead of an individual instrument.
It takes no time at all to use tap tempo, whether you ignore it or not is up to you
The BPM of the beat you do matters. But the BPM from the sample you are using is not going to help you at all. Disregard it and focus on what it could be, not on what it is.
