  • Pat Sajak, best known as host of the American game show, Wheel of Fortune, was the afternoon air personality on WSM radio in Nashville in the early-mid 70s, where he also did weather on sister television station, Channel 4. Here's a fine snippet of his afternoon radio show on the big 50,000 watt WSM radio 650 from 1975. Note: WSM's format was full-service adult contemporary during the day and only country at night until 1980, when it went full-time country.

Al Voecks was a Nashville legend as well. This reminds me of being a kid in Nashville area.

Thank you for a long-forgotten broadcast (which I would have had difficulty picking up with an AM radio about 40 years ago) with Pat Sajak on the program! Maybe I did hear it in 1976 when I traveled with my parents all over the United States!

Pat Sajak was a D.J and weatherman in Nashville before Wheel Of Fortune.

It's weird hearing that type of music coming from WSM. I know it wasn't always an all country station, but it just seems weird.

Back in the day, there were what we called "full service stations", which played various music formats and carried news, sports and weather. Yes, WSM played some Top-40, and Country, and carried the Braves (WLW has always had the Reds) and, always, the Opry. "We Shield Millions" was National Life and Accident's motto when it signed WSM on in 1925. The station moved frequencies a couple of times, settling at 650, putting up that huge Blaw-Knox antenna off what's now I-65 south of town and cranking up the 50kw transmitter in 1932. An NBC Red affiliate, the network carried the Opry for years on Saturday nights and WSM was an affiliate until GE shut down the network in the 80's.

WSM also carried the Falcons for the first decade of their existence as well as Vanderbilt football and basketball (they still do).
When I was growing up, there were no local Braves radio affiliates that could be picked up where I lived. so I would have to tune between WSB and WSM whenever one would fade out to pick up the other.

Too many people forget (or never knew that) WSM was not "always" playing country music. When I went to the Opry in 1975, I was surprised to hear pop music on WSM.

At the end, it said "The 50,000-watt voice of The National Life and Accident Insurance Company". I don't know if that was the original owner, but when WSM signed on in 1925, it was owned by an insurance company, whose slogan was "We Shield Millions", hence the call letters.

Yes, WSM was originally owned by National Life.

Another thing WLAC's (1510) call letters stood for Life And Casualty, another insurance company. I believe they were country once upon a time.

WSM playing Van McCoy's "The Hustle"? At 6:33, sho 'nuff. Also, at 7:00, Sajak mentioned an MLB game upcoming on WSM, namely, Braves vs. Reds. I'd guess being closer to Atlanta than Cincinnati, they did Braves' games.

Actually, it's "Do The Hustle," and yeah, odd to hear it on the country music mecca of the universe, WSM.

WSM-AM didn't become country full-time till 1980. Nowadays, it's just about the only AM station that still plays music. Posting July 4, 2021. Happy birthday, America!
