      I still wish they just recreated it as a netflix series with multiple seasons so that a different audience could see what's so good about it.

      Because this you say the people are talking about death note again in wich world do you live they never stopped talking about it the ammount has increased again sure but the talking about death note never stopped.
      And if i look at the Reviews there comes for each person who like´s the Netflix Death Note 5-6 people who hate it and why because it is statet that the movie is based on the Manga so yes people wantet the movie like the Manga.
      But if there were statet the movie would play in the world of the Manga with a new L and a new Light the hate would be less because then the Manga only had given ideas and it were never said it is based on the Manga.

    • @IdiotKat

      Genya2008 I hated it because I was expecting a cat and mouse mystery but L finds out who Kira is way to quick. The original series was more dramatic, every shot had purpose. Like the hand shots of Light scribbling a name like a madman to show his unstable mindset. Or the scenes with the Blue and Red characters which shows Light as red since that color is supposed to represent evil, while L is blue to show he is a good guy and the antagonists (Lights) rival. A lot of the subtle details that made the original stand out from a lot of anime were not applied to this movie which really disappointed me. I think this would have been much better as a film noir styled netflix tv series, it seems appropriate since the Death Note universe is actually supposed to be very dark and sinister. The movie was just another shot in the dark when it comes to anime adaptions.

    "The movie take a much more serious tone than the original"?
    Guess my definition of serious differs here.

    • @lordshardik
      @lordshardik 7 років тому +21

      Maybe they were referring to the fact that the jokes were a lot more subdued in this one, where in the anime, L was more of a goof, Misa was ridiculously ditzy, and then also you had Matsuda being Matsuda.

    • @ThrottleKitty
      @ThrottleKitty 7 років тому +8

      It's a lot more gorey and grounded than the anime.
      As serious as the anime is compared to others, it's still a cartoon.

    • @k1tdragon5
      @k1tdragon5 7 років тому +22

      Throttle Kitty
      So what if it is a cartoon? Just because it is animated doesn't take away the merits of the show. On the opposite side, just because a show like "lazy town" is live action doesn't add merit of meaning to that show. Death note does have plenty of goofy aspect and is a cartoon, but it doesn't take away from the various over arching philosophy the show presents and the movie did a terrible job at conveying those philosophies one of which is the definition of justice that Light and L was fighting over.

    • @k1tdragon5
      @k1tdragon5 7 років тому +10

      lordshardik
      I can understand that.
      I guess my definition for a serious tone is how well a piece of media makes us think/feel and/or how well it can question our morals and philosophy if we decide to dig deeper into the Media.

    • @lordshardik
      @lordshardik 7 років тому +15

      I personally kind of think the gore in the movie was over-the-top, which actually for me, made the movie less serious and less grounded. It actually made me laugh sometimes. It was kind of like watching a Quentin Tarantino film XD

  • @efestus5

    My biggest problem is that the movie takes all the names and image from the original story, I would prefer if the characters were new with different names making it something as a story on the same universe

      Lol if they even changed the name of the characters, they would be getting double the hate they are getting now

    • @kohaiame2691
      @kohaiame2691 5 років тому +6

      @@skcy4441 No if they kept it in the same universe but changed the characters to be new characters it would be much better and they would have gotten less backlash. The characters here are incredibly different from their anime counterparts and *THAT* is what caused a lot of fans to be upset. If these were new characters they would have been able to make them however they want, and change the story to have different events. Anyway here's what should have happened.
      The way they should have done it is make it some years after the events of Deathnote where Ryuk is bored again and wants to see if he can recreate what happened with Light. He drops a notebook again this time in America. It's possible that maybe this person was a Kira follower and tries to take up the mantle or something. We could have had scenes where Ryuk talked about Light, or even just mentioned him in passing as an easter egg. Later on an older Near could have showed up to stop him.
      Another interesting thing would be if they used the unnamed shinigami from the death note animated movie as there could have been the possibility of him being Light. It might have been interesting if he mentioned Ryuk and the story he heard while keeping things vague enough for new fans to check out the series as well as leave room for speculation. Is the unnamed shinigami Light?

    While overall Mia's charactet was better than Misa's, I can't bring myself to like her as much as Misa. It's probably because Mia is more like Light than Light himself. And that makes the movie version of Light even more of a dumbass.

    I absolutely hated this as I didn't find a single character likeable. Mia was a crazy bitch, Light didn't care about cleansing the world before he got the chance, L was crazy at the end which I hated as he shouldn't have been made into a violent character, and I hate how Ryuk influenced Light. I was disappointed that they changed a rule (in the original no death can be prevented, even by burning) and I wish we got to see Light's intelligence, especially by using tests to better use the deathnote. What I despised most however was how it never made me think or even choose a side. Overall it was terrible in my opinion which is disappointing considering the anime is my all time favourite TV show and I adore it along with the manga. My metaphor for this film thought up while watching with my boyfriend who also hated it was taking a s*it on the anime and then wiping their a*s with the manga.

  • @carissacarlson1418
    @carissacarlson1418 7 років тому +28

    I agree with all of this. Ryuk is excellent in this; L is good; Mia is different, but is a lot better then her origanal counterpart; Light just flat out sucked; the pacing sucked and the gore came off as trying to be edgy, but in a way to hide it's flaws (it kinda reminded me of Go Lion in that regard...if you ever watched that anime).
    Also, another face palming moment in this is when Light says, "Kira means Light in Russian and Celtic." First all, Celtic is not a language, it's a group of people in the same way Chinese or Indian is (which are Cantonese/Meridian and Hindi respectively) . The language is Gaelic. Second, no it isn't. Kira means throne in Russian and "little dark one" in Gaelic. That was a just a really stupid moment that made Light seem like an even bigger dumbass.
    Light, in this movie, is a textbook definition of a passive character. A passive character is a character who has no goal in mind, seeming to be pushed around by people around them. The best example of this is Bella Swan from Twilight, since she is a waif, who never makes any decisions of her own. Here, Light is pushed around by Mia and Ryuk, never making any choices of his own and always needs an outside force to do something. That is just flat out bad writing since you never, never want a passive character, especially as your lead.
    Although, I admit, I was actually bored at points in this. I remember live streaming this with a group of friends and we were just waiting for it to end at points. Either way, it was a blast to riff at times.

    This movie was a mixed bag for me, Ryuk really stood out most of everything gotta give that to Willem Dafoe. Ryuk's lines sometimes were really good, hes joke about what is physically possible with the death note cracked me up. Light was really annoying til the end which i have to agree on. L's performance was good til Watari went missing, then he just lost hes composure which i was expecting from L. The movie also skipped too much character development during the montage as well, so much stuff that would have been valuable on screen. This also applies to this movie especially for people who have not seen the anime, that development is important for a movie which should be stand alone as an adaptation. Even tho i liked seeing the shadow of the original Light in the end of the movie i just couldnt bring myself to believe that he is that smart becouse of how dumb he was acting through the entire movie. Mia tho, maybe a bit of a interesting take on her. The romance scenes tho and the music for the death scenes ruined a lot for me. That music might be hip right now but in the long run it's not gonna stand out. I miss the tense music we had in the anime, wish they attempted to give us some actual movie scores in this film that would make sense. Tbh i wanted this movie to be a good add for the death note franchise. Sadly tho i did not really enjoy it and i think i stick to the japanese live action movies. Death Note: Light up the new world, it was a lot better than anything that this movie did. Even tho i did not like this film im still gonna watch the sequel they talked about and hope they might step up their game. No expectations tho.

    I agree with your last point - after seeing this movie I got so engaged to Death Note again that I watched the frekin musical, read a bunch of fanart, and am still hungry for more Death Note content! And idk, I hear many people say the ending is great and all, but I honestly couldn't believe that the Light of the movie planned the whole thing in the super small amount of time he was in one of the classrooms during the prom-party thing. I would believe it more if the anime Light pulled through with that whole plan, because they showed him to be very smart from the start. Movie Light (American Light?) was book smart with homework, yes, but crazy under pressure genius smart? Nu-uh, can't believe that. I feel like the movie just pulled a 180 on his character, but that's just my two cents. Glad I saw your review, and I await more of your content! Like, *cough cough* Near theme? *cough cough*

    I've been thinking about the movie more and more and a thought occurs. What if this was meant to be just an origin. By the end of the narrative, light finally learns a bit of ruthlessness from Mia and gets rid of her when she oversteps her bounds. At the end he's the light that fans gravitated to from the original. Given the slightly ambiguous ending there is a slight chance of followup movies. The dynamic between a typical light and this new L could be something truly interesting.

    Just as I watched it I thought this was a pretty ok movie but it's veri forgetable. To someone who has not seen the anime it might be more impressive however it was not interesting enough so they'd watch it again. Also the Mia character was terrible, they tried too hard to make her cool. She's a cheerleader, a smoker, I think she is supposed to be popular in her school, she's beautiful, she likes gore and murder... All in all i sae it as a try hard attempt to make sure everyone liked her so that they would be affected by her death at the end but for me... I hated her from the start, terrible character.

      @Wlof25 7 років тому +1

      Mia is improvement, if we compare her with Misa.
      Misa was completely forgettable and non character, what is no strange for anime to have one dimensional characters.

    • @xXxNaDiCaxXx
      @xXxNaDiCaxXx 7 років тому +1

      Wlof25 honestly appart from being the girl Mia and Misa have nothing in common so i was judging her as a separate character. Mia had the characteristics many 'cool' females have in movies nowadays and it seemed overused also i think she was given too big of a role in the intire plot, it's not supposed to be about a girl it's supposed to be about using and abusing a power given to one person. dunno why they made her be the reason why light used the note (she pushed him also at the start he was trying to impress her) and she was able to use it at all... It was in my opinion a wrong choice. but yes if you compare her to Misa she is maybe more memorable but that is probably because she had a bigger role in this story.

    • @Wlof25
      @Wlof25 7 років тому

      "it's not supposed to be about a girl it's supposed to be about using and abusing a power given to one person"
      That above is false. That might be for the anime, but obviously not for the movie and because anime and movie are not the same, you cant use anime to judge the movie, thus the quote cant work.
      "but yes if you compare her to Misa she is maybe more memorable but that
      is probably because she had a bigger role in this story."
      And if Mia is a terrible character and she is more developed, then what does that says about 2 dimensional Misa in anime? Nothing good, it seems.

    • @xXxNaDiCaxXx
      @xXxNaDiCaxXx 7 років тому

      Wlof25 hey i never said Misa was the best developed character but she never needed to be anything more than she was where as Mia is pretty much a main character and a genuine love interest and i would have liked her to be more likeable and relateable having such a big role. The way that she was presented was not really what I personally would have done with such an important character. I never cared for her there for her death or actions angainst lighs plans didn't stuck me, it didn't get the effect that i think they were going for. had she been the socially awkward sweet one that flips the script in light but ends up loosing i might have been more sympathetic to her, this way i didn't care. that's what i'm trying to say, having had such a big role she should have been more likeable and i didn't finnd her to be that way at all.

    • @Wlof25
      @Wlof25 7 років тому

      Mia had more of the character and her being unlikable was part of her character. You are not supposed to like all characters (and considering that Light in anime is a bad guy, you are not supposed to like him. At best to empathize with him, but not to like him, because he is a bad guy there) and Mia is the bad guy here.
      Misa was just a 2 dimensional character to be manipulated by Light. And if shallow character like that is "never needed to be anything more than she was ", then Mia also never needed to be anything more than she was.
      it seems to me that you have some preconceived idea what Mia is supposed to be, while ignoring the movie and what she is actually supposed to be in the movie.

    Spoilers: The main problem I had with the ending was that it just seemed like it came out of nowhere. Not ONCE did we see such meticulous planning from Light until that point in the movie which made it feel like it was just thrown in for the "Ooh! What a twist!" factor. What makes it worse is that Light shouldn't have been able to influence those two people for *days* before their deaths, and he shouldn't have been able to state where he landed after falling from the Ferris wheel (or even make himself fall into a coma for that matter).

    • @martinkolakowski2888

      Remember the train scene with Raye Penber. He wrote in the death note probably days in advance and the bus scene? Again, Light Yagami wrote in the death note the night before or the night before that. You can write days in advance. You can control a person for up to 23 days with the death note. Read the rules in manga 13 how to read. The rules are right there and instead of creating rules, Adam Wingard should have just made do with what was there.

    Finally, someone who didn't totally trash this movie. I personally liked the movie and agree with most of your points. I haven't heard any other review saying anything about how good the movie looked other than yours, and I agree. There were corny parts and they honestly made me laugh, mostly with how over the top Watari and L were portrayed, as well as some of the deaths. This film was entertaining, no doubt, and of course didn't live up to the anime. But the way I see it, since the anime was nearly perfect, this movie is at least good IMO. It just gripes me to hear people shit on this movie, as if it was a huge production and they like went to a theater to see it. I think people's expectations were too high for a Netflix original film, but, like you said, more people are talking about the anime now and hopefully they give it a watch as a result of this movie.

    I really liked Watari. He was funny to me but in a subtle way. I also really liked the relationship between L and Watari. Something I always thought in the anime was even though L didn't show it he really loved Watari. I also really liked going back to where L grew up and the complex way that was needed to get L's name.

    • @martinkolakowski2888
      @martinkolakowski2888 6 років тому

      He had a relationship with Watari in the Japanese live action version too, he just had trouble showing it and I like that version better because it's more accurate. L has Aspergers and has a hard time conveying his emotions so he doesn't break down and cry like he would in the American adaptation. So when Watari died at the end of Death note the last name, I thought L's reaction to Watari's death was accurate too because again, he has a hard time conveying emotions. Then again in L change the world, it shows him in scenes looking at Watari's picture on occasion and imagining him standing there. He doesn't cry over him though. He wouldn't.

    It feels like the writers were afraid to do Light as he was, so they had to a whole character arc just to get him to the same heartless mind set Light had at the start of the series.
    Even that line from Ryuk
    "You humans are interesting"
    Is taken from the start of the series. It's ryuk confirming to the audience that Light has become the one we know from the anime. It's different...but interesting

    I didn't mind it, but I didn't love it either. The gore completely through me off and by the second death I was like, "these deaths are all going to be gory." The things I did like was the character Mia, and how crazy she was at times. She wanted the book for herself, and was willing to put Light's name in it, which made her really interesting and unpredictable as a character.The plot twist with the Ferris wheel was brilliant.Another thing that I liked about this movie was the topic, "How did Kira kill?" It's been awhile sense I've seen the anime, but I liked how they question how Kira killed and the possibility of Kira being a psychic or dissecting him to find out was really cool. The thing I really enjoyed and felt satisfied was Light's dad, James. His quote, "Sometimes you have to choose the lesser of the evils" made his character as a police officer more real. But what I really loved was that he discovered that Light was Kira at the end.

    This should've been a series, as planned. The pacing is too fast. I liked L in the first part as he resembled a lot the original, but there wasn't enough time for anyone to get to know him and he ends up kinda flat. My problem with light was he isn;t that smart, with the exception of the ending. I did like that he wasn't killing innocent people like Light in the anime, though. And finally Mia. Thank god, she isn't like Misa, but I did feel like she stole some of Light's light (yay puns) as she was more...logical... than him. What sucks is her motives were never explained. He legit told some chick he did not know about committing a murder on the basis of her being hot, which I think hurt his character the most as it is an extremely stupid move. Had this been series, he'd have time to know her and all that. It should've been a series. It was an acceptable movie regardless Ryuk was fucking great.

    I just wanted it to involve the complex plans and strategies deathnote was famous for. The anime made me pay attention, it made me look for small mistakes in the character's plans because I knew they would be important later. I noticed tons of huge oversights that made Light Turner look like an idiot in comparison. I think it was okay, but I was disappointed that the movie wasn't nearly as cerebral as I had hoped.

    I actually kind of enjoyed Netflix deathnote.. I just kinda tried to watch it as a film on its own as opposed to watching it as a recreation of the anime and constantly finding faults and it really wasn't bad. I really liked the idea of misa (or Mia) being the actual bad guy here, loving the need for power and control over light. She really seemed like the one caught up in a god complex as opposed to just being a lovesick character that light used in the anime. Of course it could have been paced better, everything just felt like a bit of a rush near the beginning (also light managed to kill watari with just s first name..) but other than that a few other flaws, as a film it wasn't terrible.

    The reason you state for liking the ending is the exact problem I have with it. Yes the ending is good and Light in the ending is closer to his anime counterpart but the Light we've seen the entire movie has never been shown to be that methodical or smart enough to come up with a plan like that hell he couldn't even tell that Mia was the one who killed the FBI agents even though it was really clear. Also if Light wrote that Mia would take the notebook as part of his plan does that really mean she was willing to sacrifice him? I mean she was going to burn his page to make sure he didn't die and even prevented him from saving Watari so she must have actually been in love with him. But hey that's just my opinion.

    Hey I want to ask you something on a personal level with the ending because you and I seem to have the same conclusion on the movie. With how it's left off and how smart "Netlfix" Light actually can be, does that not, the ending, make you want to see another Movie? It does for me, because now we can understand the extent of his creativity, we get to know his dad knows he's the killer, Mia, is out of the picture. We get to understand in the right moments, Light, can not only stick with his moral code and kill those that still do wrong and keep his moral code, but still within that right do and what shocked me when I watched the ending. I think it's worth seeing another movie regardless of what some many people say. Your review was harsh but in a good way.
    I really liked this Light's Netflix character, aside from his highschool side of things, he's morally broken, he's not some harsh stone killer with zero emotions and a pretty boy, and he's way more real then Light. Anime/Manga like was a mastermind. L was Detective Wizard.
    In this movie? Light has only begun his path of insanity, and he's well off more creative then Light in the Anime will ever be. His descriptions on his first kill shows that. L is a mastermind but very much broken as a human because HE IS a human, and man does L in the movie make it all worth the while to watch. he's not some loser sitting in jeans an a White face, he's a assassin. He was even trained to be this. He shows that he is a killer and has killed because when he is sitting with Light in the coffee shop he tells Light that he does not carry a gun, it's distracting. That he is in fact out to make Checkmate not Check. He's adapted this through loss and MORE loss. Which is why he's as good as he is, until that happens and his darker side comes out. EVEN the ending my GOD is it good to see L act like that. So as a movie stand alone I really enjoyed it. Mia was a surprising enjoyable brat to watch even with what comes her way.

    Tbh, I have pretty much zero respect for the Netflix adaptation. Race issues aside (since that could merit a whole essay on its own and I don’t feel like bringing that sort of sensitive topic into this), it just... is kind of laughable. I get the appeal behind taking the concept of the original manga and running in a totally different way with it (hell, even the original manga was completely different than the pilot chapter), but keeping characters like Light Yagami - I mean, Turner - and L just seems like a contradiction in itself; a desperate attempt to hold up something recognizable for fans to latch onto while totally ignoring canon. If you’re going to go in such a different direction, at least go all out and make your own original characters instead of using cheap knock-offs from the original. Even as a separate movie, though, I just... can’t take it seriously. The acting is laughable (except Ryuk, who was pretty neat, to give credit where credit is due), the characters are often poorly written and do horribly stupid things; the entire movie is just trying to be edgy, but the way it comes off is terribly cheap, cliché, and lacking in creativity. The director has also been a total asshole about a lot of criticism, so I frankly don’t have much respect for him as a person or a creator (maybe his other movies are okay - good, even - but judging based off this alone...) Basically, I pretty much agree with everything Adam from YourMovieSucks had to say concerning the film itself, and I’d highly suggest checking out that video - which totally focuses on the movie on its own merit, not as an adaptation, from what I remember.
    Basically: if you’re looking for a Death Note live action adaptation, I’d suggest trying the Japanese films (which have so much fucking extra content it’s unreal), the 2015 TV drama, or the musical. They have their flaws, but they’re a lot more interesting as adaptations imo. If you’re looking for a movie like the Netflix Death Note adaptation without any regard for whether it’s actually DN-related or not, there are hundreds of movies that do everything it tries to do better that frankly aren’t hard to find. I can see why people would want to watch this and obviously I can’t tell you what to do, but I can’t see it as anything more than mediocre at best and an atrocity at worst. Definitely undeserving of the attention it’s getting (which is probably ironic seeing as I’m the one writing paragraphs about it, but hey, it’s not like anyone here wasn’t already giving it attention).

    The only thing I really liked from the American Death Note was the screaming part when Light met Ryuk. Well I'll give them props for making Misa more conniving and psychotic then Light, it really did give a nice twist and more interesting perspective on how she played him. It was more like she was in love with the Death Note and not Light himself, which would make sense, since her desire is to hurt people she doesn't consider worth living whilest killing them in the cruelest ways. But yeah I agree that it wasn't that bad, but it's still not something I'd rewatch though. However, I wouldn't mind rewatching that part where Light screams like a girl. That was hilarious.

    This is basically what i said about death note in my review, but I went on the based on the story kind of stand point. The relationship between Light Turner and Mia Sutton was the main focus in the film and it was decent (besides all of the cringey kissing scenes). Like i said in my review, comparing it to death note you will be disappointed, but just watching it as a different entity of its own, its kind of decent. I feel as it people wouldn't hate it as much if they called it something different and just said the movie was influenced or inspired by death note. Nice review btw 😁

    I kind of feel like, with that ending, the whole movie was a set up, showing us Light Turner becoming Light Yagami, if that makes sense. And the next movie will show the real Kira in action.

    Shouldn't Light get killed during midnight since Mia wrote his name in the torn page of death note and didn't burn it?

    I thought it was OK as its own thing. Not as Death Note. I have a crappy video about it 😂

    theres also the massive plot hole that at 6:30 the rule is there that states the victim will have a heart attack, Light didn't add a cause of death for Watari but he was shot rather than had a heart attack. its seems the book had no actual power, the deaths were all caused by ryuk.

    I do agree with you that the ending is better than the rest of the series, finally he's actually acting smart. I have a TON of problems with the movie and unfortunately, the ending also had 2 major problems in my opinion.
    1. Light: His character was extremely inconsistent to me. At first, they tell us that he is smart. Then, while having the DN, he does several mistakes that Light from the anime would have never done. Fine by me, that only means he's more human than Light, because human make mistakes, and Light from the anime does make barely any. But then at the end he makes an incredible smart move under tons of stress. That just doesn't make sense to me. To me it looks like he's dumb when the plot requires a dumb MC and then smart when the plot demands it.
    2. Plot holes: The ending just didn't make sense. Like the whole movie, which was full of moments where I thought: "Just do that!", or "Why did you just do that?" the ending pulled off quite the deus ex machina. With the DN you're able to control how the human, whose name you wrote in it, shall behave before his death. But in the ending, for some reason he's able to command the page of the DN to fall into the fire, which doesn't make any sense. I mean WTF, since when are you able to control objects with the DN? That just doesnt make sense.
    But besides those two things, the ending was really the best part of the movie. The movie as a whole, meh, not the worst thing ever, but far from being good, for a plethora of reasons, I'd give it like a 4.5/10. I tried my best to not think of the anime while watching, but in the first half especially it just betrayed the source material in so many ways I was not able to overlook it. But yea, great vid, always nice to hear different opinions.

    I like to think there's a Death Note multiverse and the movie is set in it's own separate universe and not in the anime or manga universe this concept allows the movie to do a alternate story and be it's own concept rather than a copy of the manga or anime. But i'm not gonna lie the anime was still better than the movie. I need to get around to reading the manga.

    If you want a really good death note thing, try reading L change the World. Really good book that deserves a look

    I agree with what’s said here 100%... I felt like it was left open ended to make a far better sequal then the original. If they do that, I swear they better build off the light the first ended on. He was very Yagami esk...

    Shouldn't Ryuk be dead? I'm mean Ryuk says the most letters some has gotten in the note was 2 what about in the rules it says don't trust Ryuk? Wouldn't that count?

      If the rules are the same as the anime, only the "note pages" have that effect. The bookcover and "rule pages" won't kill someone if their names are written on them.

    I think the movie slammed a wrecking ball into the whole premise of the anime. The most entertaining thing about Death Note is the intellectual warfare between Light and L which are non-existent in the movie version. Plus, the movie is clearly trying to push the idiotic Hollywood and media theme that being a pussified, punk-ass, whiny, beta male is cool. Emo Light and emo L are cringetastic. Willem Dafoe's Ryuk, to me, is the ONLY reason to watch this at all.

    The ending is highly flawed. Idk why you say it's a rout anime light would take. the rules of the death note are all scattered in this movie. First rewatch his explanation. He put variables in the death note. What I mean by that is he put if mia took the book she would die, meaning if she didnt she be fine. Plus when could the death note control inanimate objects. He says the paper falls into fire. NO, the rules get broken at times to. Plus when you know what he writes when he is getting ready to control watari, just watari. Does he not have a last name like wtf is the bullshit. Ok even if you look pass that, watari was told to go and get L's name. So he shouldn't of stopped reading the sentence before he died. He turned his head and broke the rule he was givin in the death note. Its fucking shit
