@@princefancybum4605 That one is really good off-road. But doesn't quite cut it power wise in European/Western countries where you're sometimes forced to do extended road stretches
tolga1cool everything is a compromise in adv riding. A wr will do highways, but it’s more comfortable off road. Likewise an r1200gs will do off-roading, but it’s really best on sealed roads. The 690 is a compromise just the same, it’s better than the wr on the streets but worse off road, and lacks the reliability of the Yamaha. It really comes down to what’s best for you. There is no prefect adventure bike for every person
I sat on the 790 ADV R and the 2019 690 SMC last weekend at the London Motorcycle Show and my thoughts were exactly what you’ve said in this video. The 790 is very attractively narrow and ergonomically pleasing compared to the 1090 & 1290 ADVs. It really seems like an exciting, true dual sport proposition that could be useful in the dirt for average riders (below average in my case!). The 690 is a reality check - it’s tiny by comparison- as you say much closer to the EXC bikes. With the low centre of gravity it’s going to be really interesting to see what the 790 is like to ride in the dirt. More like a GS or more like my WR? 😉
When I sat on the 790 ADV I immediately felt that the bike feels very similar to the 800/850 GS to be honest. It doesn't feel light and flickable at all imho.
I went to the dealer to have a look at the new 790 and I wouldn't buy it. I own a 1190R currently and quality difference is huge. If I would buy a smaller bike it would be a 690 Enduro or 300 TPI. The construction of the new 790R looks really fragile and cheap for it's weight. ( the way the cockpit is reinforced with some weird bars welded to the frame ) ( the very thin bash plate, it's like 3-4 mm thick ) ( the steering lock welding ) ( the new low plastic tank covers ) ... if you fall over with an 1190r you hit the metal crash bars mostly, you cratch it and continue, but on the 790r, it looks with every drop you would need to change those plastic covers. Hmmm ... a lot of practical questions...
When I watched the video pulling pieces off the 790r I too was struck by the amount of (brittle?) plastic everything seems made out of! So much PLASTIC! Certaintly the entire bike can be wrapped in steel tubing aftermarket cage but THEN what does the Bible weigh?? Damn I want someone I TRUST to fill this bike with Gas and pop it on a calibrated scale! I SO want to know that and REFUSE to even go look at one until then ...I trust not one word from ANYONE making money off the sale of this model...about to just pop for the Africa Twin ...at least I know what I am getting! And they are dealing on em!
Thanks for the Video! I hope you are going to make a Custom Fairing for the new 690!? Something that looks as good as on the 701! That would be great! 😃
Sure, new fairing for new 690 and also new tank are the first on the list for us. In meanwhile we will ride the 790 and try to understand what make sense to improve.

Riding position on tiger 800 is completely different, like you're sitting in an armchair. 790 is a way-way more closer to enduro bikes. Standing position is more comfortable on 790 too. I will definitely choose 790
I saw the 790R yesterday at the Montreal Moto Show and the tire was mounted the same way, so I stand corrected. The bike feels surprisingly small, comparable in the saddle to my 650GS. Impressive. Too bad there are only 100 offered in Canada apparently.

I have the new model, and you can do easily 280 kilometer with 13.5lts , fuel capacity has increased 1.5 ltr and the consumption is lower than previous model. Officially 3.9 ltr/100kms, but real 4.8 ltr/100km. Tested 2 times. I will expect a reduction on the future when the bike has more kilometer ridden.

Hallo Jungs :-) Ich fahre im Juli mit einer 790 R von Zürich Schweiz über Iran, Pamir Highway usw. nach Bischkek. Eine bessere Frontmaske wäre natürlich der Hammer !!! Mache auch gerne das Versuchskaninchen :-). OHH SORRY WRONG VIDEO :-(
Sad to hear that the 790 and 1090 feel the same as far as weight. I was really hoping it'd be halfway between the weight of a 690 and a 1090 to make it easier for a smaller guy to pick it up off the ground. :-(
Jamby7 using KTM USA website dry weight and adding in petrol weight of 6.3 pounds per gallon, I calculate 790 as 450 pounds wet and 1090 as 496 pounds wet.
A most guarded secret (WHY is that?) the TRUE honest weight of the 790R WITH a full tank of fuel and all the coolant and oil and battery/ brake fluid etc installed in the bike... waiting for some honest MC publication to actually weigh one and tell us (And NOT just quote the retarded factory "dry weight" figure) ....Screw you KTM for not just being forthcoming! WTF????
My thinking was that the 790 was a bigger 690, but it sounds like more of a 1090's little brother. I does have the twin cylinder which would put it into the 1090, 1190 and 1290 family.

Exactly. Just put on a rally screen and be happy

Are you making a rally front fairing for the SMCR?
How full was the tank on the 790 and 1090 when you moved them from the sidestand?
Seat height it seemed the 790 and 1090 were about exactly the same.
My feeling was the 790R is 1-2cm lower. The 790 petrol was close to nothing. In the end we put it on the industrial weight and 790R had 197Kg.

Adventure Moto Enduro - You can take a fuel bladder when going to the outback. So a large tank isn’t in way when riding on-road or serious off-road.

My 690 came with Sahara which also sucks offroad.
