- Great source copy I had to work with here, which made for a stellar enhancement. Topaz removed compression artifacts, sharpened the picture, and upscaled it. I then used Resolve to brighten and add color saturation to a semi-drab presentation to VERY nice effect. I also removed some annoying hiss from the audio. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files used for this project
I love that the commercials are included. For football games of current times I'd rather get shocked with a cattle prod than watch the commercials. But commercials from 45 years ago when I was 8? Magnificent!
Director Stanley Kubrick loved watching tv commercials and he loved football so I'm sure he was watching this game
@@michaelskurski912 Kubrick lived in London, so he had the NFL games sent to him every week.
Punt pass & kick!!!
Yeah, cattle prods are preferable 😅
Talk about flashbacks....I was 13 during this game and what I remember most besides commercials is the broadcasters comments...lol
Wow those uniforms. Golden era for the NFL. Loved listening to Summerall and Tom Brookshier.
Have you noticed how the helmet logos covered the whole side of the helmet compared to how small they are on today's helmets? Look how big the star is on the Cowboys' helmets and how much smaller they are on today's helmets
Absolutely @@timfremstad3434
Those Rams uniforms were great.
EXACTLY! I keep telling people 70s and early 80s unis were the best. Now they do all this "flow" stuff. I hate the Patriots and Broncos unis for instance. Bring back the creamsicles!
@@bobbobertson7568 That's original unis, Buccaneers which club wore from 1976-1977 thru 1996-1997 seasons
Watched this game live. 13 years old. Great time to be a kid and a Cowboys fan. 😎
You must be a 1965 born kid because I was 13 when this was in, and I'm a lifelong Cowboy's fan, too. And I'll even say that when they blacked out the games back then, we would travel to my G-parents lake cabin in Oklahoma on the Red River and make a weekend out of it just to watch the game. And when I sat we, I mean G-parents, Mom, dad, me and my Aunt and Uncle and cousins. It was fun times back then. Barbecue and fishing, and skiing on the lake and football.
There are now 3 of us here who watched this live at age 13. 🙂
@@hiker996507 good times!
Tom Brady is NOT the Goat.
Roger is.
Oh those blue Dallas uniforms are so sweet. Great job on the video.
Agreed - those blue unis were way better than the dark blue and silver ones they wear today.
@@Seattle-2017 100% Too many teams have Navy Blue
The royal-blue unis were one of the best in the NFL - even if they were "cursed." (The Cowboys avoided the "curse" this game, but it is a historical fact that they have a losing record while wearing the dark jerseys.)
THOSE UNIFORMS ARE HORRIBLE!! THE MODERN VERSION IS VASTLY BETTER!!
@@hollytrinity8012 No way. The modern uniforms might as well be black, the blue is so dark.
The old NFL TODAY Intros were tje Best..Damn,it's bringin back Nice Memories of my innocent childhood...Thx Dave..!!
I don't think I even dropped a nut at this time of my fabulous and privileged life yet.
George Allen. Shouldve been. Coaching this game Rams Wouldve Won
Lord this NFL Today theme STILL gives me chills and gets me as hyper now as it did back in the 1970s YES YES YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
I'm enjoying the old commercials as much as the games. Love your content
Cig commercials! And spark plugs!
seeing OJ was chilling.
@@daveburns3886 The Lowenbrau commercial was weird. Bald actor as the salesman? And at the end, "We were worried about you, Bob." Bob replies "I know." How does that sell beer? I guess it doesn't because no one drinks Lowenbrau anymore.
Lowenbrau!! That was a good beer, never see it anymore .
@@michaelmohrle1773 IKR! Maybe because the ads were weird?
Golden age of CBS NFL . Loved seeing the pregame and Pat and Tom in the booth with Jack and Frank on the field.
And don't forget Jayne.
Even the Muriel Cigars commercial spot featuring Susan Anton was something to behold.
Danny White punting reminded me of his double duty . Time machine I’m 21 watching with my Dad . We were season TZ holders for 50 years . Jets 😢 I always wished for that Home championship game . Never got it but loved all the football with Dad . Thanks Dave
My FAVORITE championship game! Love the Cowboys old dark blue Jerseys! Staubach was awesome!!!
Go back to the Royal Blue…
Absolutely!!!!!
OH BOY!.....I was so excited for this one back then in 1978, and obviously now to see what our host has been able to enhance with his magic touch!
I like how players made a tackle on both sides and didnt jump around like they won the Super Bowl on every play.
There were far fewer egomaniacs back then.
I could easily break down why but I bet you already know. 😉
I was 15 years old and a huge Cowboys fan in 1978. Thank you for posting this and allowing me to relive the "good old days".
I love this!! The game, the coaches, hall of fame players, The NFL Today pregame which always gives me goose bumps.

Thanks so muhc for this! Your work is high appreciated!
Thank you!
Thank You!
Thanks so much for this! You know the Rams would have gone to more Super Bowls had it not been for the Cowboys and the Vikings. Great times!
Thanks Dave! You the man!
I remember this day like yesterday, 8 years old, stuck visiting an aunt who had no kids but did have a rabbit (who just hid). TV was on so sat back, intrigued by the team with the star.....and lifelong NFL fan since then.
Your aunt's pet and TV set both had rabbit ears it sounds like!
It's when Football Was Football. Now you can't touch the QB. It's flag football.
But I still enjoy watching the NFL .
The same with me plus 😊when I watch the cowboys I saw a team that hated losing that’s what liked bout them cause that’s how I played always to win ,plus they were very exciting to watch ✌️👍
Thank God for UA-cam, and for Dave. You are actually able to watch the Cowboys play with heart in the playoffs!
I am pleased fans of the site are loving this more complete version of the game enhanced by Mr. Volsky. Not an easy task with the LA Coliseums lighting challenges. I love the recollections shared here in the comments .Bless the RCA Selectavision 400, other home taping machines and those with the foresight that allowed us to view games from the bygone era. The Anticipation for Super Bowl XIII...I could go one forever with recollections...
Whatever preconceived notions you have about this game, forget them. This is a great defensive struggle between 2 of the best 3 NFL Teams of the great 1978 season. Perhaps the all-time best season. Even though I have seen this game many times, we have never seen it come to life, in full potential, like this since it's original airing. I watched the enhancement immediately. As Tom Brookshier exclaims to Pat Summerall in the wrap up, "Let's Go get a Cola, alright.." This was a day and broadcast to celebrate.
Now, who has the CBS Sports Spectacular "NFL Cheerleading Classic" reels/tape in their closet? send them Mr. Volsky's way, pronto!
I was at this game. As a Steelers and Dolphins fan I didn't care which team won and I was 7 at the time. This was the year after we moved to L.A. from NY. The theme song takes me right back to this era. And it's great to be reminded of how incredibly beautiful Jayne Kennedy was. Such good broadcast quality too.
Really nice enhancement! One of those games where its awesome if you're a Cowboys fan, but if you were a Rams fan...the only silver lining is you were spared having to agonize over whether "if only this play or that play had gone our way."
Of note: the Rams had beaten Dallas 27-14 earlier that season, with Staubach throwing 4 INTs. Obviously was a different story this day.
I distinctly recall the 1970s being like that in the NFL. Where a team looked _on-top-of-the-world_ in regular season, then get clobbered in the playoffs.
One glaring example was with the Raiders in 1974. They shutout the Steelers in regular season, only for the Silver-and-Black to get beaten in the conference championship game that same season.
2 years later the Falcons would host the Cowboys in a playoff game in Atlanta as the #1 seed, and had I believe a 13 point lead at one point in the game and still lost to Dallas in a 4th quarter comeback led by QB Danny White. Atlanta heartbreak in 1978 and 1980. Then blowing a 28-3 lead in a Super Bowl over NE. That Muriel cigar commercial with model/actress Susan Anton was a memory. I remember as a kid having a huge crush on her.
Don't feel so bad. Danny White was a great athlete. He became the starting QB in 1980, and still was the team's punter. You will never see that again. Took the Cowboys to 3 straight NFC Championships, but just couldn't get to the big dance. He did get a ring for Superbowl XII as the teams punter.
@@Christopher-jk9bjThe Cowboys were the winningest regular season team over 1980-1983 but unfortunately couldn’t win it all.
Then they started to decline more I would argue.
And that began the streak of 3 straight championship losses for Danny White
Yup Montana and The Catch sent Danny and Big D home in 1981. Watched it. Go Niners.
for us Rams fans, it looked like this was finally going to be there year. Got Minn at home, no rain and won easy. And then getting Dal at home. But, Dal totally shutdown the run game and Rams proved you need a good QB because you have to pass sometimes. All the Haden criticism was legit. Rams should have kept Jaws and given him a real shot at starting QB.
They shoulda stuck with James Harris….
I think if Haden and Capeletty hadn't gotten hurt it might have been more interesting
I was 17 years old when this game was played. I was emotionally crushed by this game. I'm a huge USC fan and Pat Haden was very good at SC, but he was absolutely horrendous with the Rams. Almost ANY quarterback would've been better than Haden. If the Rams had drafted a star QB or even traded for one, they would've won a Super Bowl or two in the 70's. They had ALL of the parts, except for a QB who was better than Pat "The Weak Link" Haden.
bill robertson (who al davis did not like at all) saying that the VIKINGS are an option to fill the void at the coliseum after the rams leave must have sent long-time rams fans off to the kitchen looking for sharp objects. the 14-7 game with minnesota had to be the all-time killer for the team's fans, all things considered.
What have I stumbled onto ??
Wow !!!
A treasure trove of pure diamonds !!!
You just filled up my TV time for the next few years !!
Thank so much for uploading these videos !!!
This being a wholly nostalgic blast from a cherished era, I was reminded of the Sunoco NFL Collector Stamps. Great memories. I think they came out in '72.
I still have my completed book stashed away somewhere. And they actually still make those sticker books! The 1972 version was produced under license by Panini, which also makes similar albums for various soccer leagues and cups. You can find the 2023 Panini NFL stickers and book for sale online.
It took them 11min to let the BEAUTIFUL Jayne Kennedy talk...She was my 1st magazine pin-up as a kid..😂
Jayne Kennedy was a very beautiful lady
She was my childhood crush ❤
She weighs about 200 pounds today...
@@dennisg6599she’s still beautiful… yes she’s heavier but still fine
Thanks for keeping the old commercials too.
Love the shade that Summerall throws at Howard Cosell, "WHO??" at 41:09 😂😂
After this game the Dallas Cowboys were the designated home team for the super bowl, but did not wear "the home dark jerseys" (superbowl 13) I was hoping they would. The uniform colors for this game are remarkable!
The Cowboys (unfortuntely) almost never wore those blue jersey uniforms. They wore the white at home, and on the road most of their opponents wore the dark home jerseys. I think a few years later (1980) the opponents considered the Dallas blue as bad luck (for the Cowboys) and switched to their home whites to make Dallas wear the blue. Not sure how effective that was.
@@Seattle-2017After 60 years since they first wore that royal blue jersey in 1964 this blue jersey jinx thing is getting worn out
Beautiful, better than any of the other YT versions. This is more complete.
Fantastic video. I love those years. I was 9 years old and enjoyed that season too much.
I wish it was 1978, those were some incredible years. I was 18yrs old at the time.
What's so bad about 2024? another football season is just beginning 🎉
Thank You Dave for putting this game out
Love this I'm a vikes fan born April 1978 so it's brilliant to see what the game was like back then. Love the adds too ❤
Keep 'em coming, Dave... You're the best! 👍
All of us SUPER huge old school NFL Fans want to THANK YOU DAVE for keeping those years alive and relevant.
Preserving these games in its highest quality certainly gives it a feeling that it's the happening right at this minute, and that's so important in triggering the emotion that had faded over time.
No one, could ever put a price on that.
Once again, Dave's channel is the real NFL Channel.
Thank you, Dave! Appreciate it so much! Wonderful upload!
Great season....great games. Thanks!
I was 8 years old...thank you Dave. The 70s nostalgia is something that never gets old.
Man, this was the days when football was real and dangerous. I loved those days. They'd actually try to hurt you back then. It was so much fun to watch back then.
Ah! But we also got to see respect and sportsmanship when opposing players would extend a hand to help-up each other after the play.
Wow....Thanks for posting this!! I remember watching this one live as a kid....What a classic!😀
I always hated it when the Cowboys had to wear the blue jerseys. Especially in the playoffs. But thankfully they put up a win in this one. Unlike vs. Philly in '80 and Washington in '82.
I completely understand.........But they look so good!
Don't forget the Dark-Blue Jersey Curse of Super Bowl V .. against the Colts [the 1st All-Old-NFL-Teams Super Bowl].
Well, in early-1970s Cowboys wore their seldomly-used Royal Blue top jerseys in pair, road games against Eagles
@@ChristopherHageeBecause they lost that game, a color change was coming to navy blue
Thank you again Dave…beautiful job…greatly appreciated!
Why won’t the Cowboys bring back these uniforms for a game?
Jerry Jones doesn't want to bring anything back from the Cowboys before 1989
Perfect, absolutely enjoy this.. thanks
I love the commercials!!!!!
great upload! I watched all the lead-up and pre-game just to see the images of the Coliseum (the tunnel, the field, the stand, the lights, where they put the CBS NFL Today booth, etc) I went to Raider games in the Coliseum with my father from 82-89, when I was very young so it was cool to see what the Coliseum was like a few years before I got there. The video even has a Gypsy Boots sighting !!!! 38:34
After going 12-4 in 1978 Haden would go 10-12 the next 3 seasons and be out of football. Guess he was too short...LOL Of course Vince Ferragamo caught fire and took the Rams to a Super Bowl in 1979, but Haden basically fizzled by age 28.
And In 3 years the 49 ers would start becoming the team of the 80s
This is amazing! Thanks for uploading.
You gotta be kidding me!!!! This awesome!!!!! How is this possible???!!!
Larry Cole had quite a first half. Just coming out of halftime now. Fun to watch. The ball security issues are glaring compared to the current version of both NCAA and NFL football.
OJ sure "took off with that Ford Bronco" , a man who stands behind his commercials
Miss Pat and Tom they were the best
NFL today love it
cowboys and rams had a weird playoff rivalry in the 70's . they met 5 times and the road team won 4 of the games
My God! I still remember this intro! That's how you know I'm on my 2nd colonoscopy appt.
Look mom, real football! Love the NFL Today!
Thanks for this. I used to run into Ed too tall Jones and Tony Dorsett in a couple of the more popular Dallas bars in the late 70s and early 80s. It was amazing how truly big Ed Jones was in person. On the other hand Tony was just average a size guy but with muscles. Both were great dudes to talk to. I loved the way they used to broadcast the NFL on CBS and NBC. Football was better back then and it was the main theme. Not the added controversy that seems to be a part of the NFL and broadcasting teams today. People were more humble back then. Plus the commercials were simple and down to earth. Not like the commercials today. Again, thank you for posting these games.
How the Cowboys organization can justify not having Charlie Waters in the Ring of Honor is beyond me!!!
Great teams, great game, great times. 👍
Man, Jayne Kennedy was gorgeous.
Thank you for this Dave!
Crazy to think at one point in 1978 that Dallas was 6-4
A tale of two seasons in one for the cowboys that year. As defending champs they went from terribly under-preforming to playing like world champions down the stretch. From mid November on they looked practically unbeatable. They wheeled off 8 in a row going into the SB.
Got off to a slow start, but carved out a very good regular season.
Couldn’t follow it up with a Super Bowl title though unfortunately.
They always had a mid season slump back then.
As a Cowboys fan, I remember this one very clearly, the Cowboys just totally taking over the game after a 0-0 first half, and despite having to wear their blue jerseys. And Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson walking the talk. Also in watching this game again, it's hard to believe Roger Staubach only played one more season.
the big blue star will never be my team, but these blue jerseys are friggin' gorgeous.
In week 3 of the NFL season the Cowboys went out to L.A. and got rolled by the Rams. The Rams' defense harried Roger Staubach all day, sacking him 3 times and forcing him into 4 INTs. Late in the game he was sacked and angrily responded to the Rams' celebration by saying, "We'll see you f***ing chokers in the playoffs". Yep, St. Roger actually used the f-word.
Super Clean Copy. Well Done.
I'm looking forward to catching an episode of The White Shadow later this week. I've heard good things about it. 1:01:30
Was hoping the Rams wouldn't choke this game but they always succeeded to disappoint their fans.
This was showdown, pair, 2 former Heisman Trophy winners from cross-state Eastern independent arch-r'vls in 1970s:John Cappelletti (Penn State pr'dct who won that award in 1973 season)/Tony Dorsett (Univ., Pgh. product winning that same award 3 seasons later, 1976)
Ram RB/1974 Penn State graduate 🎓 John Cappelletti virtually missed entire 1979-1980 season for Rams 🐏, season that club w'ld reach S'pr Bowl, XIV only to lose to Steelers, 31-19 as Steelers themselves earned their IVth Lombardi trophy in 6 seasons (dating back to 1974-1975 season)
Damn. Al Davis was interested in moving in 1978.
I heard from a little birdie that Al wanted to leave for LA as early as '75.
1978!!!! Great memories!!!
🙏
the previous versions of this game on here are pretty lousy looking
Lord this game still haunts me
That was real football back then ! ....not like the bullshit of today folks!
I don't care it's still the same game 11 men on both sides of the ball
This is like watching all my childhood football cards come to life.
Back when football Was football and men were men who played for the love of the game i miss those days
Back in the day Sports were Hard now more load management😂
I still like the way the game is played in 2024
All seemed right with the world in those days.
the coliseum is sooooooo pretty when it's full. then and now.
If u can Dave, please try to get all the NFC Championships w/commercials! Great job with these, great memories
Tonight..tonight…let it be lowenbrau
Love the opening theme song. NBC had a good one too that was kind of disco.
i like the Rams (even back then), but the Cowboys were my first (and always) team. The Cowboys and Rams played against each other in some of the biggest games of the 70s. The outcome of this game came as a complete shocker.
And the season didn't end the way us Cowboys fans wanted it to, but this was another top win in the category of "Top Cowboys Victories".
I liked playoff football in the 70s. For most of the decade you knew which teams would be in. Rams, Vikings, and Cowboys in the NFC. Raiders, Steelers, and Dolphins in the AFC. Yeah, every so often you had a fly in the ointment, the Redskins or the Colts would get in and spoil the perfection, but it was always those six teams getting to the conference championship games and the Super Bowl.
1. Charlie Waters was a baller
2. The capalletti injury seemed to really affect the rams
3. Volsky you are the 👑..
Charlie Waters was a bad-ass in the defensive backfield
And yes, Jayne Kennedy…….smoke show
The good old days when the Cowboys always sealed the deal.
Love the smog-filled opening! 0:01.
This just showed up randomly and I'm glad it did.
It's crazy seeing the commercials, but the craziest thing was how blasé they were about Staubach's concussion. Like it was a muscle strain or jammed finger...wtf 😮
Bad Memories!!! My Rams lost to dang plow boys
The L.A. Rams were the heartbreak kids of the mid 70's. They were in 6 out of 7 straight NFC Chapionship games, winning 1, only to lose to Steelers, the Dynasty that almost was.
Great Steve Mizerak pool shooting at about 2:40:45 - Light Beer from Miller commercial.
omg the commercials
Jayne Kennedy sure was purty.....and much better than Phyllis George, whom I never cared for or could understand why she was on TV so long.
I was never a fan of Phyllis George, so with that said . . .
George had the prominence of being a Miss America, 1971, and then married Kentucky Governor, John Brown; and she possibly had a very savvy agent, too, that kept her on CBS for a length of time.
It was suggested that Jayne Kennedy lost her role with CBS Sports due to George's marriage to Brown; as CBS wanted a way to bring George back into network TV.
Whereas George's missteps at CBS were fuel for critics about her, I never heard a word of criticism about Jayne.
1:53:12 The ill-fated show, Co-Ed Fever, which only aired one episode.
@3:57:15 Tom Brookshire said to Pat Summerall; "Lets go get a cold one huh??' Summerall replies, "That sounds like a good idea".... Ahh the good ol days of NFL broadcasting.
Pat Summerall dismissing Cosell!!!! This is GOLD!!!!!!!!
1:38:12, Singer, actor Mac Davis at a Cowboys game. The movie "North Dallas Forty" would be released in 1979. He was with a good looking woman.
Nostalgic commercials!
I was 6 years old…this was the day I became a Cowboys fan
Awesome. Thanx for sharing.
Randy White absolutely dominated this game
He was great; was a shame losing the SB. As I recall, he had to wear a cast that next game, tried to field a kickoff, and mishandled it, that was costly; had some bad breaks, especially Jackie Smiths drop in the end zone ; really felt bad for him
