For me personally 6051's P5 takes the cake. I'd take an old cast over a new cast anyway as I like the A Major 7th chord as opposed to the notes used on the new cast which have either been raised or lowered a half step. 3194's horn isn't far behind 6051 but it seems a little bit "flat"
TFN5459 I think the difference in sound between 3194's and 6051's is that 6051's P5 was recorded with all bells forward, while 3194's was recorded with an R24 reversal. That may be responsible for the difference, but I'm not sure. I'm hoping the CSRM brings 6051 out again soon so I can get better recordings. As for the horns themselves, I like all of them. Thanks for viewing!
+Pilotguy251 Thanks! The old cast P5 was meant to be a low-maintenance alternative to the M5. It was designed to sound exactly like the M5, while requiring half the maintenance. The most notable difference is that the P5 has more of a trumpet sound. I have some other recordings of M5s. They're available on my channel if you would like to see them. Thanks for viewing!
+AlwaysTrainsHD Ah ok, that's one of the differences I pointed out, just didn't think to call it more of a trumpet sound, but it sure is amazing. I'll take a look at the others.
I love seeing 6051 out and about; a beautiful unit that sounds as good as it looks. I can only wish 6051 made it out on the main once again. Oh well, Sac Southern will have to do. Hopefully the CSRM finds an excuse to run it again soon.
Yep, also, I am awesomeness awaits, I've been through too many accounts, sorry! By the way, I agree, I would love to see 6051 again, by the way, I do like old cast more, sience to me the new cast sounds too much like a P3/K5LLA, it's weird if you ask me, I love old cast, because they have the right tone, also, I LOVE chirps on locomotive horns, they say something about the horn to me, it's wierd, but it is like that, I love 6051, my favorite locomotives of all time, behind that is ANY so tunnel motor
Hmmm I like the New cast P5 for their sounds on the Illinois Central but, I also like the Old cast because they where on most of the Southerns Locomotives
Im gonna have to go with the old cast P5 for sure. My favorite horn ever is likely the Nathan P01235 and the old cast sounds similar along with the M5. I do love the new cast as well but the old cast imo you just cant beet.
I personally prefer the old cast especially 3194 rather than 6051, I don't know why, maybe the echo make it seems to be better sound, especially the recording of the 6051 aren't clear because of the background noises and the pneumatic bell it self.
Can anyone help me with the musical tuning set of the Old Cast P5 horn in this video? I would like to attempt to duplicate its distinct sound and tone...
The Old Cast is definitely better. But if you remove the #3 bell on the New cast it sounds quiet nice actually, and it was actually an offered horn from Nathan and mainly ended up on Alaska railroad locos.
@@AlwaystrainsEJ&E I guess acquired some engines from DM&IR, because I used to see them with the exact same paint scheme, except they would say EJ&E instead. And those old DM&IR engines had the old cast p5s. Otherwise, you’re right about the S3Ls
Some time ago a locomotive arrived in Chile that has a nathan p5 new cast horn, but I'm not sure if it is, that is where I leave the video ua-cam.com/video/MIAI0d_IL2U/v-deo.html
I honestly love P5’s, it’s like one of my top favorite horns. Especially the old cast. The new cast however, is really good as well, gtw 5857 and ic 3138 OLS both have amazing P5’s. Both of which have ran on the new London sub behind my house. Here’s the link to the video ua-cam.com/video/nlkUCHQwDcw/v-deo.html also, just type in gtw 5857 and you’ll find good vids of it, same with ic 3138
I love the little fight between the pedestrian and the driver at 3:20 lol.
Both great horns, thank you!
Interesting, more is revealed by that shot than I had previously thought. That shot also shows the switch points changing after the train passes.
AlwaysTrainsHD York Durham Heritage Railway ALCO RS11’s Horn is a Nathan AirChime P5 Old Cast
Yeah the fight lol!
Sounds wonderful on a cab-car. Refreshing change.
+Milepost_246.5 I agree. It's nice to have something like that to mix things up. Thanks for viewing!
The P5 new casts, especially on metra, Are my personal favorite. While I do love the old cast, I find that the new one is really nice.
Jetix Railfanner I would agree. I like both, but Metra's horns always seem to be just a little bit nicer. Especially their P5A's. Thanks for viewing!
AlwaysTrainsHD Yeah! P5A's are the bomb!
No problem!
F40PHR 281 Amtrak used P5A's on some of their electrics
F40PHR 281 Yeah, I eventually figured that out, Lol
AlwaysTrainsHD York Durham Heritage Railway ALCO RS11 Horn is a Nathan AirChime P5 Old Cast
I like both! The old cast definitely sounds the meanest with it being a little higher pitched, while the new cast squawks a bit more, love both!
Agreed, both have their own unique character.
I like the new casts, but personally the old casts are better because they play such a happy and musical sound. Definitely one of my favorite horns.

Can a new cast P5 quill like 6051? I now the tones are different, but mechanically is it possible to 3 stage feather/quill a new cast P5?
@@mr.wallace4193 It could be possible is it was on an older Locomotive like SP 3194.
The P3's older cousin.
They both even have the chirp as the pressure reaches the horn.
Pretty much.
I like the old and the new cast p5 because those notes sound pretty good. 1:00 and 3:46.
The horn on the 8306 sounds somewhat similar to the Metra F40s. The two others remind me of the Rio Grande for some reason.
Metra uses primarily new cast P5As, which are similar to 8306's straight P5. As for the old casts, I wouldn't be surprised if the DRGW had a couple
6:00 LETS GO SPITFIRES!
Ohh the sound of a lever activated horn is soo much better than solinoid
There is a locomotive at a plant up in Salinas, CA that has an sweet sounding old cast p5!
Do you have any info on this engine? What plant is it at?
Old cast P5 all the way!!
Man the first one sounds beautiful
Yup, it's a good one for sure.
0:55 sounds like Amtrak K5la
Sure, does
both sound good old cast and new cast ,the old cast with the gradual changing tones and new cast with a harmonious , blowing at the same time tone
Well said. I find both to be a nice change over the monotonous landscape of K horns.
I love P5's!!!
Captain Justice So do I! It's hard to pick between them
No prob! I know right!??
I have an old cast on my pick up truck as my primary horn lol.
How and can you get a mellow three stage quill out of a new cast p5?
OMG have you seen Izzwardo's old cast p5-3l video? The black horn showing the backcaps thumbnail one. It's so nice!
I heard that Nathan P5 horns can be on Norfolk Southern trains.
I like both the old cast and the new cast P5s.
Awesome vid! Trying to memorize the sound difference between the M5 and an old cast P5. So very little it seems like!

The first M5s I heard were softer then the P5. With less of the chirp, and more of the horn, but less pitch. I love how it sounds.
So did sou's first batch of sd40's have the old cast p5s
6051 for the win

Interesting, a vote for new cast. Seems like neither one is generally more preferred over the other.

My local railroad and locomotive D&H 5017 has an old cast p5 but it’s tuned to play a A#
Got any recordings of that? I can imagine that'd be an interesting combo, to say the least...

C#, E, G, A, C# (1 octave above the last)
Old Cast, the new cast sounds sick. lol
***** I wouldn't call it "sick," though it doesn't play the factory intended notes like the old cast. But to each their own. Thanks for viewing!
I couldn't think of a better word to describe it and that was the first to my mind.

Interesting, I didn't know airchime offered a 4 chime variant of the P horns. I'll have to look that up.
New cast all the way!
I like old cast P5,P3 exd
Sounds a little like the Winnipeg Jets goalhorn lol
The New Cast sounds Realest to a Steam whistle
Old cast lol!
Staying true to the classics.
some of the old EJ&E had them
I'm assuming the old cast right? All the SD38s I've ever heard have S3Ls
yes

How new are new casts?
Nathan/Airchime changed the casting some time in the mid-70's. Old cast P-horns are marked "Pat Pending" while new casts are marked "Pat Pend."
nice A7th :D
my favorite blast was at :52
Just so I know what are the notes being sounded by the newcast? Awesome video too love P5s :)
i am sorry but 6051 has an m5
I definitely like new cast more but that’s just my opinion
6051 Gotta be the best even at 1:51-1:55 best honk ever
I'd like to get out and record it again, if 6051 would only make some more public runs.
New cast sounds better in my opinion
Nice. I grew up hearing the new cast on #8306. Excellent horn.
Looks like Niles Canyon Railroad
And you'd be correct. The first scene honking the OC P5 was taken in the Brightside yard.

yep and 6051 has an m5
It literally shows in photos a p5
It’s the G# that ruins the New Cast P5s.
The 3 bell right? All the others are on tune except for the 5 bell I think.
