Choosing the cladding for your garden room can be a tough choice so here I break down how to go about deciding. Obviously I can only really show the cladding choices I made in any detail so this felt like a good way to address the topic more broadly.
In summary, think about:
-Vertical or horizontal
-Aesthetics
-Cost
-Durability
-Maintenance/Upkeep
-Style/Profile
-Finish (oil etc)

website is not working at the moment, such a shame was looking for this exact information...
Hey @AliDymock , just to say all of these vids are amazing! thanks for putting them out there and I hope you're still getting lots of joy from your garden room. Seems like the website is down though these days. Would love to see it back up, was a great resource!
Built my 6mx5m garden room after watching all your videos about 10 times. Thank you for all the advice I couldn’t be happier with the finished product. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Well done! What was your materials cost please as I’m planning a similar size project?
Thanks
@@Jack-nl7hz Hi mate, it was about £4500 in total. That includes electrics, plaster and doors. Definitely cost effective if you can do it yourself. I’m certainly not a builders but it definitely achievable. Good luck 👍🏻
Thank you so much for all your super videos. Wish I'd found you ages ago! However, I'm closer to the end of current projects but a new outside room I'm planning I can take all your most helpful points and considerations forward with me! My 'garden room/shed' is built on 2 levels and almost all wood and supplies are all from freecycle..some wood is over 100yrs old and much was twisted making things doubly complex. However ... I'm now sorting the floor and inner walls. As close to a neighbours wall I needed the outside vertical cladding to be removable from the inside! 😂 I could chat with you for ages about all the many complexities if the build inc building around a cherry tree!. And I've still a way to go yet! I need to complete the lean to that's next to it too.
So thank you! As I do the inside walls and floor your videos have told me all that I needed to know. 👍😁 TY. 😇
Absolutely awesome videos. Just moved my shed and clearing the space to build my own room....
Well done, This series is incredibly well done. I will be referencing every step of the way for my two garden builds. Thankyou
Beautiful choices for your home! I love the durability, low maintenance, and fire protection from metal and fiber cement lap boards. But the aesthetics of your front facade with the cedar is something that is manageable and slightly protected with that nice overhang! I build all my properties with the largest overhang possible. Like an umbrella that will protect the building for decades.
Agreed on the overhangs, nice protection from the sun as well in summer when it's high in the sky. As for the cedar at today's prices it wouldn't be my choice, nice though it is.
Wow! Really humbled to see mine on the British western Red cedar section!
I've watched them all, thanks very much for this, it was very informative and clear. I will be doing my garden office with confidence.
You have done an incredible job, both in build, design, video and explanation...thank you.
Thanks Paul, glad you like them :D
thansk just gone straight to your website - nice one
Thanks for the insights - I am building my workshop backwards! Started with an electricity supply, Ethernet and phone connection to the end of the garden.
Have sorted out a retaining wall. Now beginning to think about an extended concrete slab and the workshop on top.
I will be back :-)
Thanks for this video and taking the time to collate all the info on your website.
This entire series has been fantastic to find! Just about to undertake my own garden room design and build. 👍
Random, but I used a load of pine doors and a liberal coating of Ronseal. Need to revisit it this year as I want to fill some of the holes, but it worked better than expected. Cheap, too!
Sounds like a good cost saving. I'm thinking pallet wood for the inside of my next one.
Also a good shout. Framing and OSB provides structure and sheer strength, everything else is merely decoration.
I’m not the first, and won’t be the last - thanks for the videos, Ali. A massive help on my project.
Thank you for your continued help, and for sharing all the painstakingly collected info ! Will visit your web page and bookmark it for future use 👍😊
This one is a group effort for sure. Hopefully it proves useful to those who come after.
@@AliDymock I've come across a couple of UA-cam videos where they have mentioned you and referred to your Channel.
And so the legend is born .... 😊
Excellent and so helpful. You sir, are a legend.
Appreciate the videos , I’m using some of your links to price up my project , it’s all valuable information. Nice work 👍
Thanks for the video, as well as, the very informative webpage.
In the planning permission video you were told by building regulation to avoid wood cladding to get class zero fire rating. How were you able to use wood for the front of the garden room? Thanks
Hi Ali, similarly to everyone else on your channel I wish to congratulate you on a super job in studying, designing and building your garden room as well creating as an engaging series for all to watch and learn. It's been very inspirational and given me the confidence to do it myself.
The website is a great addition too.
Is there a video covering how you did the cladding or does the series stop at episode 21?
Many thanks
Bum licker
Brilliant workmanship
Hi what class 0 cladding did you use for your boundary side of you outbuilding.
John
They say everyone gets their 5 minutes of fame at some point in their lives. I think I've just experienced mine :-) Another great and detailed vid Ali!
OMG it’s Chris Aylott form Oakwood Garden Rooms FB group! 😁 Loving your work!
@@TheLewlav 👍🤣 the one and only mate ;-)
I thought I recognised that name!
It never occurred to me to go for 2 different styles - thanks mate!
Don't be spending big on sides you don't see!
@@AliDymock Fantastic Advice!
Brilliant - this is the one I was waiting for ! Many thanks Ali ! One cladding option you haven't mentioned is to use Eternit Profile 3 or 6 fibre cement sheets, commonly used on agricultural buildings, but also starting to crop up domestically. If I end up using some of this on mine, I'll send you some pics !
Ah yes, thanks for mentioning! Forgot this one, I'll add it. Looks good in black on barns as you say. I'm praying this is the stuff on top of my old shed and not asbestos!
Thanks Geoff, that is what I was just beginning to look at for a cheaper option around the non visible back or sides of the garden office if within 1m of a boundary (0 rating). I'll look at them.
@@madmickmcmart2638 Fibre cement sheets are also supposed to be good for helping with the insulation and the sound proofing ... which is two advantages over metal at a similar price point. Also probably got to be more careful with the electrics if cladding with metal !
Firstly, thank you for going to so much trouble to detail your build. It really is the best guide and source of hints and tips I have found on the internet.
I'm interested to know where you got your rear metal cladding from, and whether you need the batons when fitting it to your membrane covered SIP panels?
Cladco are a good supplier. You don't *need* battens no.
@@AliDymock thanks for the reply. Shame you didn’t do an ‘episode’ for the rear cladding as there seems to be very little detailed videos on UA-cam.
great job well done, what did the project cost in the end Ali
Awesome work! I built my shed roughly around the time you were documenting it on UA-cam, I went for Cedar shingles (wanted cedar but money was an issue) so I went for a combination of shiplap on the side I would never look at. And western red shingles facing my house. I like the look of it (even though I still haven't finished the house). If you would like where I bought those and some photos of my humble shed / excess house stuff dump I'd happily send them to an email address?
Great videos, how do you feel about SIP panel builds?
Excellent - thanks for sharing 👍
Really interesting points and such a lovely array of garden rooms to get inspiration from! You've helped so many people with your videos - including me! Thanks again for a brilliant series. You asked me to remind you when my next video is out and I put it up last night. I would love you to hop over and take a look :) Karen
Exactly what I was looking for thank you
Hi Ali, Great videos. I have a question. I am building a garden workshop similar style to yours. Frame is done and I am looking at composite cladding for outside and T&G timber on inside of the 4x2 frame. What I am not clear about and hope you can clarify for me is - If using composite cladding, do I need to cover the frame with OSB sheets first? Some seem to say yes and others say no just put cladding straight on. Also, what is the difference between the Tyvek you put on outside and the polythene you put inside? Are both needed? I'm so confused and would appreciate your guidance. Cheers Si
Did you move out before you finished your build?
I was quoted 2grand for western red cedar, 1400 for siberian larch and 500 for Scottish larch. Crazy prices for 23m2. I'll enjoy watching this video to make a decision 🤓
And I will definitely check out your website cheers!!
Hi Ali. First, thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. They are seriously excellent.
I hope you don't mind me asking, but where did you get your cedar cladding from please? I'm currently looking at Siberian Larch, however I'm seeing you have two different size corner covers there, for the outside corners and the window corners, which I am struggling to find at the moment. Thanks very much in advance!
Not sure if this has been mentioned in any previous videos as I’m only part way through the playlist. Does anyone know much much this project cost in total ?
When this video shows the cladding web page, it shows Cost / Durability & Maintenance for each cladding material. Yet when I visit the page, this is not visible !!! Can you please help?
Hi Ali , maybe I missed it but did you use the OSMO 420 Clear Satin for your Cedar cladding which looks impressive .
Damn it ! Second again !!
Ali, please keep making more videos just so I can be first to comment some day !!
Ha will do. Next few should be quick to make so be on your marks!
just like your life , second class lol
Brilliant content as per usual Ali. Quick question, what did you use to fix your cedar? I know it must be stainless steel. But is a 2nd fix 16ga any good?
Great job!
Thanks for this video - great timing for me. Can anyone recommend where to but metal sheeting? I done some Google searching but I'm sure there are some good sellers out there I'm missing!
Hey, just to let you know, your website has been hacked I think? The cladding page takes me to loads of pop-ups on IOS! Fyi 😢
Quoted £1200+VAT for 40m2 of larch from Silva timber, which seems ok. But then another £1100+VAT for pre-coating with UV protection! Most of the cost is the oil itself (2x19 litres at £435+VAT a tin!). Then on top of that the advice is to recoat every 5 years. So question is: is it really a problem to leave it unprotected? Isn't the whole point of choosing these timbers that they are durable?
Great series thank you very much for all the information! Apologies if you've done it already but I was looking for information about the total cost of the build?
Probably out of date somewhat now but probably in the region of £18-£20k but you can build for much cheaper that this with a few changes
@@AliDymock Thanks Ali, I'll be starting my own similar build in a few months!
Cedar is like gold ..I can get upvc cheap but will it look to plastic 🤔
It's ridiculous now and too much to be worth it in my opinion. I like the featheredge or weatherboard pine/spruce stuff stained to your desired colour. Cheap but looks the works - esp in black but it's all a matter of taste.
Hi ali, I am looking for your corner trim you used on your metal sheets, can you tell me where I can buy it. thanks
Sure, look for 'barge boards'. All metal sheet suppliers will have them. usually 15 or 20cm each side of the corner.
@@AliDymock Thanks Ali. Were yours metal ?
When’s the next video out Ali?
Hi Ali,
I've got to the cladding stage after following your amazing tutorials! I've decided to go for the British Cedar but wanted your thoughts on the following: is it better to treat the cedar before I hang it up? I am looking at the Osmo uv oil but as the weather is a bit hit and miss now wanted to treat the cedar before taking it outside or do I hang it risking it greying until weather picks up and then treating it?
Happy for your thoughts on this.
Many thanks
Mohammad
It is better and technically best if you can do all sides rather than just the front. That's a lot of work though so I just oiled once attached.
Thanks Ali, I’m underway with my garden room but haven’t finalised the cladding. My design is an irregular pentagon shape, whereas 3 of the corners are 90 degrees, the other two are 45 internal / 135 external.
A lot of the off the shelf cladding choices only offer 90 degree external trims. Are there any good choices for 135 external joins?
Good question. Had someone else email me that he had a problem with roof trims too as the angles are usually 90 degrees. As for cladding though, I believe there are some for composite and some timber cladding suppliers will do 135 degree corners but they're rarer. If however you go with something like metal sheeting, you can bend the corner barge boards to the shape you like. Defo have a good look around. Your corners don't necessarily have to match your cladding, they can sort of stand out like trimming
Top Work!!!
very clear
I am this stage now Ali and Cedar is £100 to £160 per sqm ex vat!!!
Nice.
Has your website been hacked?? I tried to get on to it and theres all kindsa sh*t coming up.....
Yes seen that too been like that for a while it seems
Does anyone know what's happened to Ali? He seems to have disappeared. Hope all is ok.
👍🏽
Shame you never did a proper cladding video.
