First off let me say I have so much love & respect for both of you.. . I was once an ignorant person on these things. I went to jail for a night, the next day while I was waiting to get out a movie was playing & all the black girls were watching w their mats on the floor. I said whats this? They all turned & looked at me, one said get your mat & lay right here, this is the color purple. ... when that scene of Oprah getting ganged up on bc a white woman screamed, bout had me in tears. But I was in jail, so I couldn't cry. . Sitting on that dirty jail floor w these women watching this movie had me moved & it clicked for me. I didn't get to finish the movie as my name was called. I finished the movie when I got home & could cry. . Its a beautiful movie that tells a story of human resilence & spirit. All yall mfs need to watch that movie! ❤❤

Here in Brazil we have the Black Awareness Day, on November 20th, in order to remember the fight of enslaved black people and black leaders that fought for their freedom. It is a headache every year, because it is not a holiday, certain states and public facilities can choose if they are going to adhere to it or not. You basically have to say to your boss: I am not going to come tomorrow, it is Black Awareness Day and you can give me an absence, I do not care (of course I am privileged to have such a job, I don't recommend doing it if you can be fired!).

Facts! But if im not mistaken it will be considered a national holiday starting this year due to an presidential approval (don't know the term in English) signed on December 22nd.

    • @shiningdahlia
      @shiningdahlia 3 місяці тому

@@marcobenevi I hope so! It is a day to celebrate black people, mourn and also fight for a better treatment of the ones that are always marginalized. It simply cannot go on like it is not real or important.

I have freckles (meaning parts of my skin have more melanin than others). I remember learning in science that my freckles are related to melanin, but no one had anything to say about the fact that Black and Brown people have melanin in their skin. I think it was my first remembered experience of actively being white woman protected. I’m grateful for the discussion in school of something I couldn’t control (freckles) but it would have been awesome to have that scientific fact extended to everyone’s skin color.

I think Juneteenth is a good thing. History cannot be forgotten. But we learn from it.
    And we grow as people.
In 2015, I was homeless in Wichita, KS. It was winter and about 13 degrees out. I was lying on a sidewalk by the library about to freeze to death. A police officer picked me up off the ground and gave me a blanket. He took me to the hospital where I was diagnosed with serious hypothermia. I was close to death. But he got me there just in time.
The policeman was a black man, and he saved my life.
So how can I judge another person by their ethnicity?
    Juneteenth is beautiful.
    Keep it strong -- amen

Juneteenth is a vibrant and wonderful holiday. If we’re going to celebrate lukewarm politics (a president who became president because he was a decent war-time strategist or a president who “granted freedom” to people who never should have been enslaved anyways) then we’re happily going to celebrate Juneteenth. And we’re not going to tell a person who they are just because we have a terrible memory.

So, as a white guy, how do i say, "Happy Juneteenth!"
I'd like to. I agree that we're not free till were all free.
But... the word "Juneteenth" is a very specific and cultural word and...I worry that it sounds... if i say it... appropriated? Not... typical? Trying?
I think we need more Black people agreeing that everyone should celebrate this and say it outloud, before anyone outside the Black community feels comfortable celebrating it, much less, saying it outloud.
I guess i need "permission" to say it without sounding... like a jerk.

Straight, white and 67 in Oregon. I celebrate with you. Proud to do so. I have a little rainbow ALLY pin on my bag. I fly my equality flag. I've waited for someone to say something so I can educate. Nothing but discrete positivity. I might be the youngest person in the over 55 neighborhood. I KNOW I'm the youngest minded. I happily label myself woke.
