You CAN wash cast iron. You just need to dry and coat with a generous layer of cooking oil afterwards.
👆
I do love my little cast iron skillet. You can make a really good steak on the stove top and in the oven with a cast iron skillet.
I use Dawn soap on it all the time, and then coat it with canola or olive oil after I wash and dry it. *Drying is the important part I think.* It can rust if I don’t dry it and use the oil on after, but you can scrape that bit of rust off with a bit of steel wool.
I do the same thing. Dry it and put oil on it. Sometimes I heat the pan in oven. I dont use it much because I have glass top stove. I use it camping. ;)
?
@@lil_Marie_Red that's what I do as well, put a little heat on it after oiling... well I used to. Now I just boil water in it with a lid on it then scrub with this cool stainless steel scrubber I have.
And you need to heat the oil to it's smoking point in order to break it down and make a sort of natural "polymer" coating. I toss mine in the oven at 400° for about 45 minutes every two or three uses. Make sure you are adding a thin layer of oil each use to prevent rust.
I wash my cast iron after every use with dawn dish soap. I dry them and spray with Pam. I have been doing this for over 20yrs and my cast iron is beautiful 😍
Great list! I'd add:
1. Manuals, reference books, etc., both hard copies and/or digital. For instance, how to tie knots in those ropes, how to fix that car or use that generator, how to do first aid, and so many other things. Having a reference will be a sanity saver and possibly a life saver.
2. Cables, cables, and extra cables for your devices AND any devices you may come across in your adventure.
3. Of course, but I still have to mention it, FIRST AID including supplies AND TRAINING!
:)
Good ideas!
Working on it with my meager funds. Started a year ago, so at least I’m ahead of many who will be caught unawares.
cheap solar walkway lights work great inside at night and charge during daytime, turn upside down, 2 will light up a room...
"If you've gained 50 pounds since you packed your bug out bag."
Savage, but accurate 😭😂
Coffee!! lol... every list should include this..it can be a hot beverage, breakfast, a soul booster, medicine and a crime stopper all in one cup :)
Coffee can help if someone is asthmatic. Was that what you meant?
I stock about a year's worth of coffee. Instant, ground, beans, etc. It will be worth its weight in barter. I have also stocked lots of ammo and other things in case someone thinks they can come and take my hard earned preps!
Too hard to smoke !!
@@ConfederateInfidel get some ZYN pouches or another brand for back up nicotine. Some Black and milds, rolling papers will also be good for Bartering for things.
Thank you for the smile 😊 I totally get it for sure!!!
I would add fire blankets on the list
I got a side-cut can opener that removes the top of the can, so the top can be reattached. You can save the can for storage, or make hidden stash containers
(I scored a 49 out of 50 here. Need an eggbeater drill)
I'll never be prepared enough! The things needed are endless!
Start with food, water, and a cheap way to cook.
@@diypreppertv I have, but the worry is how long will this depression/famine last? I just keep stocking beans and rice and things to go on rice to not get so burned out on rice, beans. I am low income on disability. I have had bad homeless people rob me of my camping equipment and food! I live in my van. It's getting apocalyptic already!
@@wolfsong3958 I have stockpiled seeds of all kinds. The problem is I live in my van and with this heatwave, I don't know if they survived. It's extremely difficult to prep when u don't have a cool dry place. I have a book on learning edible plants to eat, although I put it in storage, cause these bad, criminal minded homeless keep stealing stuff out of my van. I had to put most of my stuff in storage. It's apocalyptic where I am at right now!
@@charlottewest342 have you ever tried reading a Bible you would be surprised at what you can learn about what's coming
@@curtisbacon7856 I know what's coming!
Condoms . bullets . tylenol. Cotex . long shelflife food . silver . water .
So far I have about 90% of the gear I will need. Thanks.
Awesome list - I have found great training videos online too so while there is time I recommend people learn simple things like how to darn fabric (sewing technique to cover small holes or reinforce thinning areas), sew on buttons, etc. I had absolutely NO sewing skills, canning skills, etc and have learned so much from You Tube already. But grab some books/manuals too in case you need them for reference and we no longer have the luxury of UA-cam!
I liked this list. It came fast and furious with no excessive explanation.
Thank you!
Instead of stocking up on dishwasher soap, shampoos, cleaning chemicals, just grab some good old fashioned alkaline (lye) soap which can be used for all these purposes. A lot of stores sell big bags of Amish-style soap which is super budget friendly and has so many uses. Especially good if you have a good water supply nearby. For feminine hygiene products, it's super easy to make reusable sanitary pads from up cycled clothing, and an old towel, and these can be made with just a needle and thread, no need for a sewing machine that needs electricity.
Been a prepper for over ten years. This is a great list. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
550 cord also has loose string inside for emergency purposes. Having a survival bracelet made from 550 cord is a good idea as well.
Greetings from upstate South Carolina. That’s a very good list and I’m happy to say I have everything on that list and I am fortunate to have much more. Stay strong patriots and preppers.
✝️🇺🇸🙏🏻 ULTRAMAGA👍🏻
Thanks Ronald!
Dammit...I need paper plates and more shampoo. Good on you.
Hi Ronald. I from the Greenville area of SC. Glad to know you’re out there. Hit me up if you want. Keep safe my friend. Happy Prepping to you. Only we can take care of ourselves and our own.
"If you have gained 50lbs..." most likely adipose tissue, so if you are obese, perhaps pre-diabetic, hypertensive, etc., your best prep would then be to get your body composition back into something that is fit for a combat zone or pre-electricity agrarian society; it does help to have some stored energy as fat, but not if it's largely hampering your health and fitness.
Cheap things with multi uses in the house, garden, and person: Baking soda, white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and peroxide. Check out your dollars stores.
..and paper towels, sponges, small plastic bags (walmart bags), and tons of ivory soap.
I would like to add bug zappers to the list. I have a few that are rechargeable and they work fairly well and I can recharge them with solar system
Thanks bud, good stuff. These are most helpful for prep ideas
For lighting, I have about 20 small solar garden lights, plus 4 large units (about 1/2 an A4 piece of paper size) on my house. They all have an on/off switch, but will still charge even when switched off. Just put them outside in the daylight, and collect and switch them off at dusk to use through the night. Will easily light your house until dawn, especially if not all used at the same time.
A good video dude. Practical, sensible, and affordable.
Making sure that we did not forget anything. Thanks for sharing 👌👍
A big list of considerations for sure JR. Thanks for sharing as we constantly need to re-evaluate our preps....never just as simple as a bugout bag and relaxing...lol. Cheers and have a great weekend.
Thank you Brad!
Good list - It has made me realise that I am missing a few things. Time for a trip to the shops!
Thanks for watching Gavin!
Thank you for a great list. Very thorough and complete. Much needed as resources and a checklist. 👍
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Love your common sense approach to things . Thank you so much for the links & all your work to help people .
Thank you David!
Wow that's quite the comprehensive list, and all in under 12 minutes, noice!
Thank you!
Holy crap this is a lot of good information. Thank you
Stylish hats! LOL!! Thank you for a great video and a good laugh.
Nice job. We all got to stay up to date on what we need. Everyone has some sort of advice to share and it all helps everyone
Thanks for watching!
Excellent presentation!! Thanks :)
Thank you Ali!
Great videos!!! I can say I'm covered in all areas except wood and tools, but they are on the To Do list. Only one area I would suggest most don't think about. Raw sewage backing up through your pipes. Another video suggested stuffing Nerf balls into sink, toilet, and tub drains. Thanks for sharing!!!
Gosh, that was like drinking from a fire hose! But excellent! You covered so much in a minimal of time. Great content especially if you can pause to write it all down. Thanks brother!
Thank you Angela!
Awesome video, thank you for sharing your advice and knowledge 👍👍blessings to you and your family 🙏🙏
Thank you Kathleen!
THKS
Solar cookers are silent, smoke and odor free, dont need fuel, and have no risk of fire or fumes.
Going to need my own store.
Just a little added note after seeing the footage of your roly-poly’s… I recently found out that these little guys can take metals out of the soil! Amazing huh? So don’t kill them! Sorry just had to tell somebody about these because I was so delighted! Good video! I really appreciate your no-nonsense way of laying it out for us!
Thanks for all the great information
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching the videos!
You missed oil and sparkplugs for your generator if you have one. Screw the lights the neighbors will hear the genset far away. Your generator kit should also include a startup and load management checklist on waterproof paper. Remember, the power goes out only at 3am after you haven't slept for 3 days (that's because you don't remember when it goes out at other times).
Good point. In fact, most generators don't like to start after people leave them sit ignored for months. Then they need it and,..nope. Also, most gas doesn't keep very well. Back in the day, we'd keep hundreds of gallons for tractors and it didn't varnish up like now with the ethanol in it.
@@kevindouglas8768 Yeah, but it's not just the ethanol. There are other chemical factors as well. There are reasons GM and other owner kept Leaded gas until the patent ran out in the 90's. Tetraethyl Lead is toxic in the extreme, but they fought it because it made them money and saved the gasoline. The oil refiners still don't want to make the gas any better and last longer. That very expensive canned gas lasts for years....
Great list! love that you include the photos of items typically found in the stores.
Thank you Brenda!
Hi, Brenda!! Let's Get Together next Thursday evening!!!! 😄😎😉😉😋😋
Great video... the only thing about reseratores without the vent is they use up twice as fast because they are filtering the are twice every breath
Yes, I’m so happy about the decrease in the inflation. I just love going to the grocery stores and seeing the price is going down every week!
Most important thing we need is a string mind. It's possible you could lose all you bought. Your knowledge and stability of mind is most important. Stay strong.
When stockpiling clothing remember you will likely lose weight during emergencies. Ensure you have additional belts, needle and thread to take in clothing as needed. BTW - great, practical content in your video.
Why not have a sewing maching, decent ones cost twenty bucks at the th*ift sto*e. I p*efe* vintage ones and have seve*al fo* diffe*ent pu*poses. Pls.. excuse, wate* spilt on compute*. Sewing sund*ies and many othe* items a*e cheap at th*ift sto*es o* ya*d sales. Instead of *at poison, use potatoe flakes, so you don't kill othe* animals/pets.
Great video i love it, keep on keeping on!
Thank you!
This is a great video! Thanks a lot!

Popcorn! It last a long time and you can make cornmeal with it. 3 Tbls is one serving and it makes 5 cups popped. I also have several ways to season it.
I love popcorn too- so many people are staying away from
It though because there is a good chance for a cracked tooth- if all goes to crap and dentists are closed this would be bad. Just food for thought
@@laurennicolejones so pick through and get the old maids out? People have been eating popcorn for ever. But each to there own.
Popcorn is a staple in my family. We have grown somewhat lazy with microwave popcorn but I believe we should all be familiar with the stovetop method and even have a popper for a campfire. I'M glad for the reminder, I think our campfire pan has been loaned out and not returned, I need to fix that!😂😂😂😂
VERY helpful and detailed list
Thank you Tanya!
Ora gel too. It will numb an area if yiu need to stitch it up. Or liquid stitch to close wounds
This is a great video thank you

Emergency dedicated solar lamps (outdoor lighting) - I have used my set of lamps 2x this year and they are wonderful. Set them in the yard to charge and light your home at night. We had a week long power outage in July and a 1 day power outage Last week. In July I unpacked the solar lamps so the 1st night we used our candles which the extra heat was not needed in July. This is an overlooked resource that has double duty lighting my backyard at night and in an emergency lighting my home.
Re-Mind... (To put in mind again). Love the video JR...
Thank you Tao!
Bleach has a short shelf life. If you use and rotate through your stash no problem. If not, look into Calcium Hypochlorite (pool shock). Store it carefully and print out some dilution ratios.
What is the water to pool shock ratio? Please Texas
@@danaodom1010 1/4 teaspoon to sanitize a 55 gallon drum of water. To make a stock solution to use like bleach, 8 tablespoons per gallon of water. Just like bleach the stock solution only lasts 6 months after being made.
Great advice!
Thank you!
Much better than bleach (which has a short shelf life) are bleach tablets, bleach powder, and even pool shock (be sure to look up how to safely use it while there is still access to the internet).
Solar lights. Any lights that charge with solar.
Awesome video thank you 🙂
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Regarding flashlights, one of the best options are old school incandescent bulb types that won't be affected by those pesky emp's.
I'd say sleeping bags and blankets if you end up with no heat source at any given moment.
Informative! Thank you!
Thank you Arlene!
@@diypreppertv You’re welcome! Just made a to buy list while watching one of your videos. Your information is so helpful! Appreciate you!
An excellent video. Started prepping 15yrs ago and was pretty smug when p@ndemic hit. However, as recently as 4 months ago I realised I wasn't as well prepped as I thought. Spent a week checking out as many videos as possible on UA-cam and writing up many, many lists. I can safely say that your vid is about as comprehensive as it gets. Certainly an excellent starting point. Well done. 👍
Thank you Elizabeth!
Also like that you particularly referenced feminine hygiene items and dental hygiene. Too many lists don't.
I have a box of toiletries in my closet, when I open a pack, I buy a new one. I'm never smug, I know I'm always forgetting something that I'll be sad about, like extra Berkey filters
Great list! Thanks.
Cool video thanks.

Charcoal can absorb moisture in damp areas
The idea about the bleach is an old prepper trick and I suppose it has its place. I would much prefer using something like life straw because you have to remember the bleach made in fact kill off any bacteria but it’s not gonna get rid of chemicals and things to that effect. I think sometimes as preppers to we buy a lot of gear but I think we have to be honest with ourselves. How long can a person really last out in the middle of nowhere? If you’re young and strong, if you resourceful and brave you might last for A decent amount of time. I’m 58 and in pretty decent shape for my age however, we still need to be able to be kept warm in the winter I am speaking for myself to be truthful I’m a little bit air condition spoiled. I do like your videos as I stated I think they’re very practical and useful want to say thank you for making them. My final thought, when you’re doing your prepping stuff be honest with yourself. For example, people can have all this wonderful gear but if they’re in such bad shape that they need a nitroglycerin going up the stairs I doubt if he will last too long. Best regards from the state of Kentucky.
@@CloudWatcher500 In simpler terms, you have survived in this predatory Phil world for 73 years which in my opinion shows one of a couple of things. You’re smart, resourceful, and your common sense person. Also, I personally believe this sounds to me like God has your back!
stockup like your going on a 10 year camping trip..then you might have enough for 3 weeks
What is the best container for long term storage for the oregon coast for water and food
Just helping the algorithm.
Thank you Pete!
Doing pretty well based on that list. My idiot sister calls it hoarding, but I have a mental checkliit I've been working on. She's just too shortsughted to see the benefits of what I'm (trying to) get/do. I want to make old fashioned oilcloth & newer (fashioned?) silicon-infused sheets, two kinds of multipurpose waterproofed fabrics.
Supplies + skills make one valuable. In One Second After, those w/ knowledge or skills got to stay if they asked, while others had to keep walking. It's a good strategy. I also loved how the characters learned from old magazines in the college archives how to work steam-powered equipment. Ye Old Yankee Workshop tools & skills will be priceless, as will Lehman's & other type stores.
Backups to backups, & spares to barter with should be the goal.
Sounds like your sister should definitely be on your not allowed in when SHTF
yes sir...
Thanks for watching Kevin!
always a great video
Thank you!
Candles can add some heat in winter. Thanks for reminding i need some berkey filters!!! Everybody has generaters in my neighborhood. Elec kicks off 5min and everybody fires them up. Annoying!!!- crap load of noise. And in daylight with warm weather!!!-!
There are tons of manual screwdriving devices mre efficient than the 'regular screwdriver' you mentioned, ad being able to use a brace and bit opens up options that are frustrating with electric tools.
Be warned, the world of vintage hand tools is a rabbits hole almost as deep and fascinating as prepping.
Hand sanitizer works great for fire starter
So much to prep in what seems like SO little time right now
Stylish hat 😂 from aluminum 😂 brilliant I don’t know about you guys but I’m hoarding some coffee…life is not worth living without some…yes it’s that serious.
Substitute, for toilet paper is wipes, like Wet wipes. That was one thing that when people were hoarding toilet paper, there was plenty of wipes good idea. These suggestions were great. I think you hit everything even a few I didn't think of, like the dental stuff. Big help thank you
Love the ideas from Random Baggins Thank you your suggestions were great.
Haaaaaa, stylish hats!!!
In conclusion; stockpile absolutely everything.
I wash my cast iron and dry it thoroughly over a flame followed by a generous coat of oil
Just found this channel loving it so far
Thank you!
Everyone say to stock pile but never say how for a months time or 6 months a year. Supply what you need or want. Not what you don't need. Emergency kit a plus and batteries.
Where can you find plain old bleach? I haven't seen any for ages!
Tin foil can be washed and used again. Waste not, want not.
Motor oil
Aluminum Foil, "You are making your own hat, Amazing!!!!"
Luckily, a lot of these items are really cheap and usually found at Dollar Tree.
❤️
👍
7:10 they sell those USA made duraflame brand logs over here in the UK for about $3-$4 each, there are other brands for about $1.50 as well.
The gas canisters and bottles are all different here apart from the small camping stoves and lamps where the small gas canisters are pretty much the same worldwide such as the little camping gas brand and Coleman (and about 30 other brands) of pierceable and screw on canisters used for backpacking stoves and camping lamps..
European bottles of stove gas are all different again for the likes of caravans/trailers/boats , the ones in France , Germany and Greece as well as Spain all differ from eachother in size and also valves and regulators and sometimes even the specific blends of gas used, so people arriving in boats , yachts , Camper vans/recreational vehicles from Europe with one bottle of gas end up unable to buy a bottle in the UK to fit their stoves and heaters and regularly dump empty non (UK) refillable bottles in Britain...
One time when I was a kid about 300 large gas bottles washed up near my late grandfather's house that were abandoned overboard by a cargo ship in the Atlantic after they used them to cook on board and piled them up on board hoping to swap them out for refills, they couldn't get them so they threw the empties overboard...
A thing to note is that gas cylinders/bottles outside camper vans and caravans/trailers are stolen, it used to be occasional but now I'm fairly sure it will get more and more common ..there's not a lot to do to prevent that and additionally storing has bottles indoors is dangerous and sometimes even illegal depending where in the world you live...
Maybe a good idea to have a hidden in plain sight place for spare bottles ..
Good to know! Thanks for watching and commenting Grant!
Lots of different types of sanitizer?.. washing-up liquid and bleach that's all I use for everything even cleaning my engine and My loo and my kitchen....
It looks like another tropical storm is headed our way, so I thought it might be a good time to get an emergency radio. The one you recommended is sold out, JR. Do you have a second choice?
The Kaito may be okay.
Check the expire date on your bleach. It does become less effective over time.
Other than that, outstanding list... all in one 12 min. vid.
Thx, JR Cheers.
Thanks HozelRocket! Bleach is definitely something you need to rotate.
The prices on those wipes have gone up to almost $5 each.
Happy wife happy life. Don’t forget to stockpile those feminine hygiene products.
@@woodspirit98 tampons take very little space and are inexpensive. 120 would cover one female for a year. $10 for store brands. Pads take up more space but can also be used to cover a wound instead of using a lot of gauze pads. $10 for 120 store brand.
If there is water scarcity it is much more sanitary to use the disposables because they can be burned. Cloths have to be washed and boiled. If you have females of childbearing age they will be healthier and happier with disposables.
Motor oil…antifreeze/coolant…I guess that goes along with your equipment spare parts 🤷🏻♂️
