Coach McKie How do you teach the zone side of your half slide to pick up their defenders? What are your rules, buzzwords, etc? IIRC yall vertical set, which allows the linemen to be patient and see what kind of stunts develop in front of them, so how do you incorporate that into the teaching? For example, say 1 tech works across your guard's face to hit the outside edge of the b gap hard, the end loops behind the 1 tech, and the backer scrapes to the c gap behind the end. How would your guys sort that out? Note: I know folks treat their pass pro as if it's a matter of national security...So if you can't divulge, don't sweat it #johnjenkins...

For example... vs. a 5 & 3 on the slide side and a 1 & 5 on the man side... if they slant to the man-side (in order to bring the edge rush) and send the BS ILB thru the man-side A gap there's no one for him since the guard is locked onto a DT. It's just a catch and throw. But you have to think...that linebacker is AT LEAST 5 yards away from the QB. So if he is able to hit the QB then two things happened: 1)QB held on to the ball way to long and it is his fault or 2)That LB is a STUD and we will be watching him on Saturdays and Sundays.
Appreciate the reply, coach. I came up in my playing career in predominantly B.O.B. protection, but am going to a half-slide/combo pro this season. I'm fine with it becoming catch-and-throw for my Q, but I'm thinking of having my centre look away from the zone-side if a backer shows EARLY in the man-side A-gap. We're gonna make a line-call that then tells the 'back to now look zone-side B-gap since they're now without the centre. Just don't always want our offence to be dictated by the blitz. @@CoachMcKie

Coach Marin, We don't change anything. The quarterback knows that he needs to get the ball out fast because they are bringing 7 and we only have 5 to block. I don't change it because I don't want my guys to think too much.
agreed, see to many patty cake blocking in high school. Pancake...not patty cake. If you can't block, then you can't throw. Also, hot shot screens will kill a defense when they blitz off the edge against 4 receiver sets. Oh, did you get the play diagrams I mailed to you with my variations of mesh and shallow?
Dana Holgerson uses a zone blocking, from tape the best I could come up with is the center needs to be open, he is responsible for the A Gap rusher, if a defender is lined up in the A or straight on he is to hand off that block to one of the guards then be responsible for the A gaps, the tail back which lines up behind the QB is responsible for the opposite A gap. The other TBs are responsible for the B gaps and outside blitzes, the rest of the line is responsible for the B gaps and the C gaps. The idea is that everyone is responsible for a spot and not an individual, We want to establish an inside presence and send all rushers around the outside. In order to do this a very strong running back is needed, a guy with vision. I will be interested to see how this changes with Jake Spavital at the helm calling the offense this year.
Yeah he still does that, he's never gonna get out of it either. Besides Hal Mumme Dana is the only one I study out of the college game for passing attack. It's real simple, what Dana is doing, they call plays with one hand single, first the formation is called then they look and see what the defense does then a play is called based off the defense. As best as I can tell, only one player is given a route and all other routes go off of that player. It's interesting. Now, of course, this year Jake Spavital is calling the shots I know nothing about him other than Jake coached Jonny Manzeil
I always have my zone side to the QB's blindside. If we are keeping the RB in, he is always responsible for the furthest linebacker to that side, and the linebacker that the 3 man zone is responsible for shifts 1 over. That makes sure anyone the QB is reading for a hot throw is coming from his open side, and he should see it in time.

Build in TB hot 🔥 . We had that in hs. 2. But I couldn't help but think if defense picked up on that and corner jumps the throw to TB ??
