33:54 “These fossil fuel companies have five times more carbon in their
proven reserves than is compatible with a 2 degree (Celsius) temperature target. If we burn it all we get to ten degrees. We need to leave a lot of it in the ground.
Don’t take it from me: Just this past week Total, the French oil company, very active in Alberta, made an historic announcement. They said they were remaking their business strategy to bring it in line with the 2 degree temperature target that was agreed to in Paris, and that meant they would not be drilling in the Arctic, and that meant that they were going to ‘reduce their exposure in Canada’s [tar] sands.’
    * It’s the first time an oil major has acknowledged the need to leave
carbon in the ground.” - Naomi Klein, 29 May, 2016 University of Calgary

Seriously? This woman expects the majority of citizens to believe that she is promoting her views in order to address climate change. How cynical. We are not that stupid. The reality is that she is hoping to dismantle capitalist society and replace it with a socialist utopia. Never mind that social re-engineering has always worked out (i.e.never - see eastern Europe, Asia and South America as reference), the facts are that the western world is more stable, people live longer, have more food, have a better quality of life and are better able to adapt to adverse circumstances as a result of capitalism. I don't expect that Naomi gets that - she does not strike me as a particularly intelligent person.
I would suggest that Naomi move to the socialist utopia of Venezuela to experience first hand the joys of what she is proposing: running gun battles, drug lords controlling vast swaths of society and people eating dogs simply to survive.

Justin Craig, I've read most of Naomi's books and she is one bright cookie and one of the most thorough researchers on the face of the earth, I'd listen more carefully if I were you.

Why should the people who have polluted the least have to pay the biggest price for heavy pollution that facilitated the growth that developed countries enjoy through unbridled dogmatic commitment to capitalism whatever the cost ? It is not developing countries fault - yet they will be the ones to suffer most. Is that okay with you? Condemning billions of people to suffering- so you can afford your fourth car, swimming pool, air con and steak every night?
