God she's so tiny yet she can basically jump her height lol. And her double-triples are just so effortless looking. Obviously she was the pioneer for the likes of Tonya, Tara, and Mao.
The announcer said she didn't deserve her high marks. He must be looking at another skater or something because in my opinion she deserved those technical and artistic marks.
+Sergio Flores - Yeah, I thought the marks were fine. Rewarded for her technical expertise and a few tenths drop for artistic. Yes, it was not the best tango in the history of skating but she captured the theme and executed decent choreography and very good steps and the jumps were great, of course.
What kind of idiot announcer refers to a tango and having "disco sounds"? Midori's artistry was so underrated. No, she was never a ballet dancer but she was always compelling and exciting and musical. You can't be everything. IMO, the greatest female skater who ever lived. She could have beaten the men of her day.
Jonathan Wallach - your last sentence "she could have beaten the men of her day", if you watch the Canadian version of her 1990 Halifax LP, Tracy Wilson in the beginning of her skate says that at the 1989 NHK Midori skated so well, a lot of people thought she should have won the men's event.
what annoys me is how midori's purposeful change in regards to music from the 1988 olympics to this was to fit with the status quo "artistry" of the time, the type that gets the marks, and she was still criticized. i am glad i have the ability to appreciate both sides of midori. i thought the music was charming for her, especially the straight line step sequence section.
Totally agree! The music and the choreography were superb this time and she portrayed the character beautifully. It’s as though the judges refused to finally give her credit.
@waddleduckie1 she's a woman with man's leg. and when people mentioned midori was 'jumping', they meant 'flying'. No wonder people called her 'tsunami girl'.
Because she did not have to do a difficult combo. Don't forget --- she was the last skater of the evening. In the old system, the later you skated, the better you scored. Moreover, she already had a great reputation. The safety was more important for her. And this easy combo was harder than 3t-2t by Trenary and Leistner. Yamaguchi did 3lz-2t much earlier of the evening, but she was not a contender yet.
Actually she tried to go in the wrong direction after her spin combo. Consequently her foot work got a bit short. She mentioned it after this performance. Watch her coach tapped on her head after the performance.
I think Nicky meant that normally she skated to disco sounds and he was surprised that she was skating to a tango. Normally he talks total poop anyway... so I agree with you.
Not only her jumps are so high. her spins are also soooo fast, too!
I love how she skates.
oh thank you for posting1! I really wanted to see it!!
Fantastic! oh remarkable score,too!
this is so cool, ito was so fun to watch with her spirit
Very nice!

the last move, from 2:30 is very cool.

i agree…i think they beat her down…look at the flow out of the jumps…her speed…it is a sport for gosh sakes...
I agree! Playful even.

She did a double toe triple toe because no one else could even touch her. Crazy.

That's worlds with all those empty seats
she was such a nervous jumper.
This is a joke?
nervous? So odd comment!
Good program but the music is wrong for her.
Disagree! Music was fantastic for her and gave her a character to play.
