Someone who was literally on for a few seconds and yet in that time through his aka Dame Edna's mannerisms had the audience with Camilla and Charles in hysterics finishing off with the final punchline. Mark of a true genius of which we will never see again. Barry Humphries, much missed!
He first appeared as Edna in the film "Bunyip" (1970), and since that year, up until now, there is still nobody has come close to that brilliance. The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972) - is perhaps most famous for one of its final scenes where then Australian Prime Minister 'Gough Whitlam' makes a cameo appearance and makes Edna Everage a Dame, so from then on ', A Dame is Born, Dame Edna.
It was very true, it was in the news here in Australia when Barry was in hospital towards the end. I believe the Royals were fans of Dame Edna, after all, didn't the Dame have a shelf in the Queens fridge all to herself?
Few performers could get away with this. Dame Edna is an icon. And yes I know it's a man in a dress but the character was just incredible. A truly unique creation that made a mark upon the world. God bless Dame Edna.
@@Haharino I know it's hard to believe but Dame Edna was a man playing a wonderful character. It took me some time to appreciate that fact. I imagine you will also need some time to adjust to the reality.

I read this week, in a new book about the king, that when he heard Barry Humphries was ill, the king called him, having checked time differences. Humphries died two days later. Reading this choked me, maybe I remembered this clip. Either way RIP Bazza
Only Dame Edna could have pulled that off & she did wonderfully! Rip Barry Humphries & I feel so privileged that I met you. Thank you for so much joy Love & best wishes Faith ⭐️♥️⭐️🎶
Hear, hear. The dame makes her grand entrance, gets pulled back down to earth and then spins it as she departs. Only Edna and only Sir Barry Humphries.
One of the great comedic minds of all time. Dame Edna is the diva of all divas. What’s great about this moment? Charles is laughing so hard, that Edna almost cracks up. “I’m so sorry. They’ve found me a better seat.” And she just leaves. I can’t. I wish Barry Humphries could have lived forever. This comedy moment, will live in my head for all time.
This Dame is genuinely a master of comedy! She made it seem so effortless, but I know it's not easy to make an entire crowd burst with laughter just by using mannerisms and not even saying a word. Her unexpected final line was the cherry on top! Even the royals couldn't contain themselves and were laughing out loud. The King has such a great sense of humour, it's nice to see it come out occasionally. Being in such a high-status position, he probably can't let it shine as often as he would like. And it's heartwarming to see that the Queen is such a good sport too. They both clearly had a great time!

@@tulinfirenze1990 I've read that they were very good friends, and if I've got it right, The King was actually on the phone to BH a day or so before he passed away. His Majesty has immaculate taste both in his friends and in his comedy!
@@iwasglad122 This is what the media was reporting - I have no reason to doubt it. Dame Edna and the loathsome Sir Les aside, Humphries was an erudite and highly intelligent man who was well-read and knew how to comport himself at all levels of society. I'm sure he and then Prince Charles would have spent lots of time talking about all manner of interesting topics.
The brilliant part of this moment is that Dame sits and settles in on the chair as if she is staying and looks towards the stage as if saying go on, carry on, don't mind me. 😉 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂
Over they years I have watched so many female impersonators, but I have to say there are many differences in the quality of entertainment value and like or appreciation of the audience. Dame Edna was brilliant, razor sharp sarcasm-whit but never ever the mean or cruel vitriol of some present day drag queens. The icons like Dame Edna, Danny La Rue, Craig Russel, Charles Pierce will live on in our memories for the joy they brought to us. There are others who are waiting in the wings, but the real icons are the ones of class not the ones who are crass and crude or cruel by finding a victim in their audience to belittle or humiliate to get laughs.
The King is incredibly jolly in private and occasionally in public but, as you said, restrained for apparent reasons - his other admirable trait is that he doesn't follow the current trend or movement but instead creates a direction or motion by sharing his real true interests. He has been a stalwart defender of classical architecture and the conservation of London's traditional built environment, dwarfed in the post-World War Two skyscraper building boom. He did all this back when it wasn't popular, or people didn't care too much that he was ridiculed - Now it's the modern way of life to conserve your history and grow your own food, which he has done for decades... A futuristic visionary he is.
@@Neo.Altair So true. I recalled the time the media were giving him a hard time due to the story that went around that he conversed with his plants. He gave a speech some time later where he sent himself up by saying that he asked his Roses their opinion :)
