When my brother left for Nam, this song was out. We never saw him again. Remember our MIA brothers & sisters.
Sorry for your loss.
Speak his name for a blessing
I'm so sorry! I had many friends in Viet Nam, but they came home, scarred but home. Bless them for their service!
The real beauty here is, there were no soundtracks or autotune, just four true musicians on a stage making incredible music. Oh, and John Denver wrote the song.
Indeed, those were the days when musicians and singers were entertainers with pure talent.
And then (much later) he died in an airplane.
@@Calmontheoutside Yeah…bring that up to ruin the mood. Thanks
@@stellarhyme3 Since none of the other comments mention that it’s poignant, that both Cass and Denver were gone too soon, or how the song reminds them of family members who’ve passed or, ya know, other sad stuff, hopefully you’ll get back on track.
@@Calmontheoutside your riposte at the end there seems a little snarky, I'm doubting your sincerity here. If you don't like John Denver just say you don't like him. It's OK.
This song came out in 1967....right before my boyfriend, at the time, had to ship out for Viet Nam. He was 19 and I was 17...can you imagine the amount of tears I shed listening to this song?? Although me, and that guy, haven't seen each other in 45 years, this song still brings tears to my eyes! Thank you for the memories...love you two!
you should try and find him, just to say hello
soooo, don't leave us hanging, what happened? he came back - I was a little afraid of where this was heading - life just moves on I guess?
We should make a movie about this comment 😊
That's what you do for older people. We appreciate it.thanks😊
I hope 🙏 he came home for you
Cass is a freedom and civil rights icon. John Denver was a God sent talent.
DEFINITELY not "two random names" lol
She'd be labelled a Far right wing conspiracy theorist by today's gutter media.
Check out the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary "Leaving on a jet plane", "Blowin'in the wind", "Puff the magic dragon", "I dig rock and roll music", "500 miles" their harmonies will amaze you.
Excellent suggestions. I've suggested they do a reaction to "Light One Candle". Peter wrote it as a Hanukkah Song, but the message transcends the religious and touches the humanity of us all.
I was going to suggest the same thing. Peter, Paul & Mary are great!
John Denver wrote “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. Puff the Magic Dragon would be good for the girls. I loved that song as a kid,
Puff the magic dragon is a timeless classic
Loved all these when I was young!
As a guitar player, I can tell you one of the most amazing things going on here is how effortless his playing is. Nothing he does on guitar is "easy" but he makes it look simple. Cap it off with is effortless vocals (which are pitch perfect and effortless) and it is simply IMPOSIBLE not to watch and be riveted
agree 100%. I saw him live at a state fair. Best performance I ever saw in my life so far
Fingerprinting a 12 string? Simple......😂😂😂😂😂
His guitar playing was very clean, would have to have seen him on an electric guitar.
Two singers who grabbed our hearts and who died so much earlier than we ever could accept. I count myself blessed to have been part of their generation!
So pleased to see this generation fall in love with music we grew up with.
John Denver was something special. I especially love everything he did with Jim Henson, he was one of those guests who treated the Muppets like living people and it made for great shows. John Denver and the Muppets Christmas special is unironically my favorite Christmas album
It is one of my favorite Christmas albums as well.
Aw his 'Grandma's feather bed' with the Muppets still sticks in my mind 💖 loved it so much
Kind of like the Mister Rogers of music... ❤
Oh I forgot about that!!!!!! Wonderful....And Grandmas's feather bed!!!1
I listen to The muppet Christmas album every year. Recently saw the actual special on UA-cam it’s so good.
Tell me the world wouldn't be better if had more time with these 2
I am an old man and this song still brings tears to my eyes. You two are amazing. Thank you
They clapped so soon because they knew the song just from the intro.
Knowing that John Denver died while flying makes this song even more poignant. This song has so much depth.
If you don't love Mama Cass you have no heart. She had such a beautiful heart. awesome reaction.
I can’t tell you what happiness I feel knowing that a new generation can appreciate the artistry of this man and the beauty of his music, his crystal guitar.
Cass had an amazing ability to weave a harmony, effortlessly, to any melody.
So glad you guys got to check this out! Cass was being funny saying she wrote this song, it was actually written by John Denver but the best known version is by the folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary. You should definitely check out their version for comparison. PP&M is another rabbit hole for you. Also check out their songs Blowing I the Wind, 500 Miles, If I Had a Hammer and of course…Puff the Magic Dragon.
Gotta say that Denver's studio recording of this song was much better than this live version. PP&M also have a beautiful version.
Yes.... Peter, Paul and Mary.... awesome folk era group!
This was a huge song huge song that’s why they all clapped as soon as he started singing it. I also want to say it makes me so happy to see people discovering songs that I’ve heard hundreds of times easily hundreds of times and love it just as much so long after it was a hit on the charts.
Bingo! John wrote the song, but Peter, Paul and Mary had the bigger hit with it, I think. But his version sold a lot too. So Cass is making a little joke.
When I was locked down on the table receiving radiation treatments for cancer, I would close my eyes and sing this song in my head to calm myself down. It was about the only thing that mentally got me through the treatments.
Me too. CML leukemia 20 years ago. His music was fresh air and light.
Way to go. Good luck on your treatment and soon clear.
Wow, Cass was a prophetic voice for this very day!
When she said "I'll just wait over her 'til you need me", I would not have let her go anywhere! Stay right here, sing it all with me. Even give her a verse alone.
"Leaving On a Jet Plane" written by John Denver (Cass was joking, she did not write the song) was a number one hit for Peter Paul and Mary in 1969. John Denver also did a duet with Olivia Newton-John, "Fly Away" in 1975. There's a video on UA-cam with John and Olivia together singing "The Flower That Shattered the Stone" that is beautiful.
I still think "Fly Away" is one of the most beautiful songs he ever did.
It's great that Cass took credit for writing this song! But John Denver wrote it and he went along with the gag!
Is it about going off to Vietnam?
Sad fact about John Denver he wrote the end route insane so many songs about airplanes and yet he died in a plane crash. So sad.
The sound of fingerpicking a good 12-string acoustic guitar is a beautiful thing as John demonstrates wonderfully here. Younger people today may not realize just how good acoustic guitars actually sound because these days everybody plays one through a pickup which frankly makes them sound like crap compared to one you hear through a microphone. It's a world of difference and you can tell how good it really is just by listening to this.
It looks as though John Denver is playing his custom *Guild F-612* 12-string guitar, which had a beautiful tone.
Holy crap! I didn’t realize he was picking a damn 12 string! That is not easy to do well!
Just some background for you-the Viet Nam war ( 1965-1973) became a highly contested involvement as the goals were obscure, the "acts" of war including the coffins returning with the bodies of the killed military, were on the TV news every night. You should lookup the Viet Nam War in protests in America. Over 58,000 were killed in that war of 8 years. FIFTY- EIGHT + THOUSAND. When young men turned 18 years old, it was mandated that they sign up with The Draft Board ( military), and many of those 58,000 killed came from being drafted into the services. While "Leaving in a Jet Plane" was not written about the young men leaving for war, it became the anthem for it. Despite all the violent protest against the war,it did not look like much would change with the same politicians in office. So a very vigorous "get out the vote" effort began among those wanting the war to end in an attempt to vote out those politicians who supported the war, and Cass Elliot was part of that effort. THAT is what they are diplomatically talking about here.
Try listening to the song again , but this time from the perspective that it is a young man leaving to go to war ( Viet Nam) and I suspect you will cry a bit as we Boomers do...
PS Many groups/singers/folk singers incorporated anti- war sentiment in their music
Mama Cass could harmonize with almost anyone. I love listening to her. And John Denver was a amazing guitar player and had one of the greatest voices. Not to mention his song writing talent.
This is Cass' best scenario- singing harmony to someone else's lead. Her voice is so huge, so atmospheric, that it elevates everyone else's voice. She can sing really loud without drowning anyone out. They are both equally sweet sounding, too. Magic. Oh wait. You just said that. :)
I also want to point out that behind that freewheeling hippie vibe, she is an absolute pro. Her pitch is so accurate. And look how she chooses her distance from the mic every second, to get the mix right. She knows how to steal the stage with a glance, and she knows how to support the lead like a warm fire. Don't you wish she would look at you like that? She has her game DOWN!
And she carefully shapes her tone for amazing blend, watching John's face intently to ensure consonants are in perfect time and vowel swells move hand-in-hand.
@@erickent3557 They were both watching each other's faces intently, this is just great craft on both their parts.
So sad we lost them both at such a young age. A lot of musical magic gone forever.
Their harmonized chorus - GOOSEBUMPS
My feeling EXACTLY!
@@nkcjulie Warm molasses poured over butter brickle ice cream.
I love how Cass sang bottom harmony the first half of the chorus and to harmony the second half. That was stunning to me!!
You said what I felt.
Cass Elliot and John Denver were two of America's music icons. Tremendious talents individually and an incredible duo.
SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDERS and THANK GOD, I'M A COUNTRY BOY are two songs from John Denver that will leave you with both sides of your warm toast buttered. John always had a good attitude and warm feeling for his audience and gave them the best that he had. A genuine talent of warmth that is sorely missed today.
John wrote the song, Peter, Paul and Mary made it famous.
Peter Paul & Mary songs: "If I Had A Hammer", "Puff The Magic Dragon"
Yes to Peter, Paul and Mary! The best folk group ever!
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone"
"500 Miles"
"If I Had a Hammer"
"Stewball"
First time I heard Jet Plane was John Denver.
They clapped so quickly because its one of his most recognisable songs !
My aunt who I loved dearly and rarely got to see, when ever she would come visit, she would take me by the hand, lead my to my bedroom, pick up my guitar and sing this song to me, she knew I loved this song so much as a child (pre-teen) She died only a few years later from lung cancer, and so this song has always stuck with me! This song will FOREVER be in my heart and always make me think of my beloved aunt!!! She was such a kind and pure soul!!!
The joke Cass says about "letting" Denver sing "her" song is that he is the actual author. This song is famously covered by Peter, Paul, and Mary. You should check that version. They change a couple lines as Mary is the lead singer of their amazing cover.
+1 for the comments below about how the song makes us cry. Both of these artists were taken from us to soon. I still remember hearing on that day that John died flying his experimental plane (he was alone).
Cass Elliot passed away in her sleep in 1974 from a heart attack. The night before she passed she called Michelle Philips (of the Mommas and Poppas) to tell her that she had just sold out two shows in London performing as Cass Elliot and got standing ovations both nights. Michelle is quoted as saying that Elliot "... died a very happy woman".
I used to live in Denver Colorado and went to Aspen for the weekend back in 1996 and went to a little bar and John Denver was there, few people in the bar so I went up to him thinking he would just blow me off, he smiled asked my name, then introduced himself and said it's a pleasure to meet you, we talked for about an hour and he is just as down to earth and as kind as you might think of him being, he thanked me and said goodbye and left.. the bartender told me he came there all the time and at that point in his life he had a drinking problem, but who hasn't had some very low points in their lives so I definitely didn't judge him, it was about a year later he died while piloting his airplane... what a blessing it was to have meet him...RIP John Denver...
I find the voice of John Denver to be almost mystical. To me, He is the only artist that make me feel like that. When I hear his voice, instantly I have strong aerial feelings of peace, comforting light and positivity.
Such clear voices! Zero vocal fry. They don’t have to glide their way up to the notes. Each is separate and distinct. Love it!
I love this too. Olivia Newton John was the same
Cass did lots of duets thanks to all the singers with variety shows and tv specials back in the late 60s/early 70s. My personal favorites are ones she did with Julie Andrews (famous for Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music fyi)
There's one medley they do of Simon and Garfunkel songs and another of Cass's solo hits.
She also sang with Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Broadway star Joel Grey, Ray Charles.
I LOVE the Simon & Garfunkel medley sung by Mama Cass and Julie Andrews!
Cass Eliott had that quality that emphasized the song above all. If it called for you to be a soloist you give it your all. If it called for you to blend harmonies you ramp it down and blend. Having sung some a capella Bach chorales I know how hard that can be and what a skill it is. Cass and John seem to do it effortlessly. From experience I know that ease comes from tons of practise. Two masters of their craft!
I was going to point this out. Not nearly as well as you have here, but she was a consummate professional performer and mastered her incredible voice as her instrument. I have always adored her.
@@inspirationworks8357 I agree with you about all of this! Oh, and the original commenter as well!
John wrote this before he started singing publicly, PPM had a huge hit with it. It's about a musician going on tour, but because of the times really resonated with men leaving for Vietnam, trying to say goodbye to the women they loved, knowing they may not come back.
Producers spend time adding harmonies like this to songs, and Cass and John do it perfectly live, every time!! Just magical. Everytime I hear this I get goosebumps!
Two things: 1) this song was written by John Deutschendorf Jr. , AKA: John Denver. 2) When "J" said, "1972. This song was recorded before my mama was born" I nearly fell off the sofa. I was in high school when this was recorded. I feel so old! LOL Thank you J and Amber for this channel! I truly love it and love you! Merry Christmas!
HENRY John Deutschendorf.
I think Jay's comment hit a lot of us Baby Boomers hard, too, but old age is a blessing that is denied to many.
I was a few months away from finishing high school, had just signed up to join the Army and go fight in Vietnam. (The Australian Army stopped sending troops to Vietnam before I finished my training, so I didn't end up going). I'm typing this on my 65th birthday.
Ironic lyrics,I believe john,'s dad was a navy pilot.and of course John tragically also died as a pilot on a solo flight.
Me too, Eva. I was 16. I don't feel old, but Jay's comment did hit!
John Denver wrote this and was originally recorded by folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary They also recorded Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind and Don’t Think Twice. Love the blend of Cass’s and John’s voices here.
They clapped 4 notes in because this was a huge hit for Peter, Paul & Mary. John Denver was known as much for being a songwriter as a singer so most people there probably knew he wrote it. Cass Elliot solos: "New World Coming"; "Dream a Little Dream of Me"; "Make Your Own Kind of Music".
Went to a John Denver concert back in the late 70s. What an awesome performer that dude was. The voice of an Angel in every song, and funnier that shot too. R.I.P John, you are still missed.
I wish I could have seen John Denver live. I remember John Denver being criticized by some ignorant people because he didn't fit into any particular music genre. John Denver didn't need to fit into any particular genre. People loved John Denver for just being himself.
@@tammyclay62John Denver was indeed his own music genre. ❤
John Denver is a must in any library. Every car trip should have at least one Denver song to sing loudly as you drive.
John wrote this song in 1966. I just love this genre of music. I am so glad you guys appreciate it so much.
I was born in 1966. Love this song.
Earlier this year, I spent 4 months working 1000 miles from home. As I headed to the gate to fly out, I looked back at my wife and this song hit me like a ton of bricks. Thank you for this amazing song, John Dutchendorf (AKA John Denver)
They harmonize beautifully it gives me chills
One thing to note here is how well John plays the guitar live. This picking pattern while singing is nearly flawless. He was very accomplished. Mama Cass sang with a lot of people and had a couple wonderful hits on her own.
Mama Cass had a few solo hits...
'Make Your Own Kind Of Music'
'New World Coming'
'Dream A Little Dream Of Me'
What always makes me smile about these live performances that were from back in that era it really shows the talent. Its done on the best equipment of the day but they were songs that were written by great writers and there is no autotune used during these live performances its their voices you hear.
Losing him feels like losing a great big hug that voice was something else
I like how they sing in unison during the pre-chorus, then harmonize the chorus.
I can barely hear her.
A 65 yr old kid from Canada...sittin here with tears filled with memories of these two delightful people...and a time when youth really thought they could change the world for the better.
Their harmony is amazing! John has always been my favorite for 50 years. Saw him in concert just months before he died.
The 70s produced so many amazingly talented singers, bands and song writers. Glad to see you reacting to many of them.
So sad how many legends that have passed way too soon. So many great collaborations like this. Just think what might have been if these artists that have passed were still alive today. I know our world would be a better place...
Yes! These two souls would have shared so much light with the world.
Cass sang with everyone from Tom Jones to Sammy Davis Jr, Lulu to Julie Andrews, Johnny Cash to Andy Williams, Mary Travers and Joni Mitchell to Dave Mason. Let's just say she could sing with everyone and anyone and she did.
From what I remember Mama Cass was funny she had a good sense of humor even about herself and her own weight. Two legends gone but not forgotten
John Denver’s song, "Annie's Song” was my grandson's favorite song when was a baby. If he started to cry, all we had to do is play that song
and he would stop crying. Even if he was in full scream, hold the breathe cry.
Did you know John Denver is not his birth name and he wasn't born in the U.S.A.?
John ( Henry John Deutschendorf) was born in Roswell, New Mexico on 12/31/43. Definitely in the USA.
Two vocalists who can sing, not lip sync. Beautiful performance.
One of the best songs ever.. John Denver was such a wonderful singer/songwriter.. just amazing. Love this video, lost them both too soon 😢 Do listen to Peter, Paul and Mary sing this.. they recorded it first before John Denver was famous though he wrote it. Talk about butter.. you'll sink into them singing. Your kids would love Puff The Magic Dragon by them also!
Cass's remarks on voter registration and voting still apply today. Thank you for including that. love john denver all his music is magical please do more smiles and love
We don’t realize how lucky we were to have them.
Interesting fact about this song is that although John Denver wrote the song it was originally performed by Peter, Paul & Mary
The joke was that John Denver actually wrote the song.
Cass Elliot came from the folk singer tradition and excelled at harmonizing.
The audience did not know what he was going to sing! He wrote this song, and it was a well known hit sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary, hence, the surprising applause.
For real, John Denver did in fact write this song and Mama Cass was kidding. He wrote an amazing number of songs. All of them beautiful.
Back in the 70's, when I was a teen listening to Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and a myriad of bands in the vicinity of those genres, I had no time for the "folksy" John Denver. I realized some years later that I had pigeonholed myself into missing some really good vibes. Like you guys, I've been on a musical journey. Perhaps for a while longer, but still.. watching your own journey refuels my passion for music. Not to mention refueling my desire to "Make someone smile". Keep those positive vibes coming!
This makes me want to cry, knowing these two beautiful voices are no longer with us. 😢😢
Ugh, yes. At least we still have their beautiful music!!
One of the most favorite songs played in Vietnam on Armed Forces Radio. John's brother was in Vietnam while John was in D.C. protesting it.
Your take on Mama Cass adding superior quality to the vocals of others is spot on.
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" is one of my five or so favorite pop songs. And the lyrics are so poignant when you consider the Vietnam War was raging when Cass and John Denver performed this version. I love this duet, but my favorite version is that by Peter, Paul & Mary.
Yes; despite the song not being about the war, it culturally resonated at the time as being about soldiers heading to Vietnam. Similarly "Mother and Child Reunion" by Paul Simon and even "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash took on the zeitgeist of the Vietnam Era.
I love these vids it literally makes my day so much better 🦕
I think these guys have one of the most wholesome channels on UA-cam. For reasons i don't understand, it makes me happy to see them happy.
I’m blue I wish this channels will die ba da bo dee dab o dah
This song written by John himself was the one that put him on the music map, later he wrote a song with close to same theme called Goodbye Again.
This is hands-down my favorite version of this masterpiece... Both gone too soon..🙏
Peter, Paul and Mary's version is the most popular and best sound for that song. If you go down the PPM rabbit hole, Puff the Magic Dragon is a must.
Got Puff on my Music! It still brings a tear when Jackie Paper stops coming and Puff goes and hides in his cave. Did you know, there is a Children's book called Puff the Magic Dragon, but in the end Jackie grew up had kids of his own and brought them to meet Puff. Ive given it as a gift whenever there is a child born in my family.
I was 1 year old when this aired. I grew up listening to John Denver.
I was 7 years old when this aired. No.. I didnt watch it, as I was probably in bed. But when I discovered it, it honestly touched my soul. I had always loved Cass. I vividly remember her singing on a show that was filmed outside, singing "Make Your Own Kinda Music". I immediately fell in love with her, as deeply as any small child could. When this song started, the room darkened around me, and I was pulled in to mesmerized distraction. Playing it over and over again until I began to sing along. Nobody will EVER sing like Cass Elliot. Nobody will ever sing like John Denver.
My mommy died when i was 12 in 75. Early 70s every Sunday before sunday school she would play John Denver. Brings me back to a great part of my life
I had just turned six years old when this came out. Loved the Midnight Special. Two years later, Cass was gone. For her solo work, check out "Make Your Own Kind of Music", or "Dream a Little Dream of Me". For duets, she did a good one with John Davidson, can't remember it off the top of my head, but it's on youtube.
Was it I Dig Rock and Roll Music?
Check out Cass, Joni, and Mary singing "I shall be released"
Make Your Own Kind of Music and Dream a Little Dream of Me were from her album “Mama’s Big Ones”. Great songs!
Folk singers, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Simon & Garfunkel, Art Garfunkel, Paul Simon. So many.
John Denver had a beautiful voice. ❤️🇨🇦🎅🏻🎄🎅🏻🎄
John Denver has so much great music. A true legend.
Emmylou Harris is another great singer whose voice can blend with and compliment anyone. You will find her on countless country records.
She sang a duet with John on a song called Wild Montana Skies. About my home state.
Cass had a great talent of singing harmonic lines that complimented the lead. David Crosby is similarly gifted. The Eagles harmonies were so rich that they must've had two or three such members.
Cass and John were such incredible talents. John Denver was such a beautiful, spiritual soul with such an open heart and gentle spirit. I cried when he died. I still miss him. He has such a vast and deep catalogue of fantastic music with so, so many big, huge hits you need to dive deep into it.
I cried to he was such a meaningful voice and he's not such a gentle person he had a rough life but there's a lot of redemption in his story amen
Both the room and Amber got a make over.... and both look incredible.
Absolutely one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It launched John Denver's career as a songwriter and it wasn't long before his voice was the one everyone wanted to hear.
This still brings tears to my eyes. This was playing on the radio as we drove my new husband to the airport to fly away to boot camp. This was while the next flight for him could be Vietnam😥
This is my wife's all time favorite singer, any John Denver song and she stops whatever she is doing just to listen.
Truly a magical pairing for a timeless song.
I remember when they did this performance on the Midnight Special. Both sing beautifully. John Denver was an American treasure.
Always one of my favorites of Cass Elliot is 1968's "Dream a little dream of me". Cass really gets to exercise her spectacular chops. Perfect for "Female Friday". I really love what you bring to the world. You are blessed, and you bless. Thank you.
one thing the music field lacks today is - PASSION which oozes big time in this performance
Awwww. John, the man, Denver. This song still brings tears to my eyes even today. I remember seeing this on TV in 1972. I was 13 yrs old. Momma Cass was amazing! She was so talented and wonderful in her own right. But John, wow. Everything he ever wrote & recorded is magic. This is such a beautiful song, and so sad. Thank you for reacting to so many wonderful gems from my Era of music as a kid in growing up in the 60s & 70s. You two are wonderful. Luv u both! 🤗❤🤗❤
John Denver was one of the biggest stars in the 70's. I remember in elementary school during music class we sat outside on the lawn under the trees while our music teacher played this song on her acoustic guitar and we all sang along with her.
The John Denver Wildlife concert is really fantastic as well.
I've been a fan of John Denver since I was a small boy in the early 70's. But I could never admit it openly. I was sad to hear he died. His songs were campfire songs for me.
